The Smartest Thermostat on the Market

I've slowly been making my house smarter, and had been eying a smart thermostat as a key upgrade for the past few months. I had heard a lot about Nest thermostats from tech blogs and such, but after doing some more research, learned about the ecobee3 and decided it had more features that would be helpful to me than the Nest, so I went with the ecobee3. The non-homekit unit went on sale, and I don't use any iDevices, so I picked up this unit for pretty cheap. Additionally, I was able to get a $100 rebate from my energy company in massachusetts, which was great. Be sure to look for rebates in your area.
The thermostat arrived quickly, and was very well packaged. Installation was not difficult, although it was a little trickier than I expected. I did not realize I would need to install the C-wire adapter inside my thermostat as well, which worried me a little, but it turned out to be just a matter of unscrewing a couple of wires and sticking a box down there. Now everything is working great! It came with two wall plates to cover up the unpainted area underneath my old thermostat just fine.
It was pretty easy to set up a basic schedule, like a regular old programmable thermostat, but this thermostat has the added benefit of handling schedule exceptions without any user input. That means if I decide to stay home for the day, or don't come home one night, the house will auto-magically sense my absence or presence and either keep me comfortable or save me money, which is great.
The ecobee3 also comes with a remote sensor, which is one of the major differentiating features from the Nest. My small house HVAC only has one zone for five rooms, the thermostat is in the living room, which is the largest part of the house, and is very open. Before the ecobee3, I always had problems with my room being significantly cooler or warmer than the rest of the house at night, probably because it was a small room with an oversize vent, and better insulation than other parts of the house. The old way to fix this would be to try and overcompensate on the thermostat, which is tricky and doesn't always work, but with the ecobee3, I just put a remote sensor in my room, told the system to only use that sensor at night, and now, suddenly, I am always comfortable at night. It really is amazingly effective. I will soon buy some additional sensors to make the system even smarter. FYI the sensors have not been tripped by my cat, which is good.
The other key feature for me is the rich API that ecobee makes available. I use it to integrate the thermostat with my SmartThings home automation hub. The thermostat appears in the interface like any other smart device, and can now be included in all sorts of home automation programs. The thermostat is already pretty smart, but when you combine it with other systems you can do even more. I now have it set so that if anyone opens a window or door in the house for more than 10 minutes, the heating and cooling systems will shut down and instead only ventilate, automatically.
Overall, the interface and control systems for the thermostat are excellent. The web interface has been a little buggy recently, but the company assures me they are working things out. I haven't been able to access the HomeIQ reports yet, but hopefully they will be ready soon. I am very happy with my purchase and have been thinking about upgrading my parents home with an ecobee as well. It would be easy enough for them to use, and could really save them some money as well.
PROS
-------------
increased comfort and money savings with AutoAway and occupancy detection
excellent UI and beautiful hardware
rich API, compatible with smartthings and logitech harmony, IFTTT
remote sensors are the biggest innovation in thermostats since programming
much more powerful than the nest thermostats
logs temperature, humidity, occupancy, and HVAC usage constantly and historically, great for people who love data
it displays the weather and indoor humidity on the screen
CONS
--------------
still a little bit buggy in the web app, but does not affect operations
was a little difficult to find energy rebates for it (they do exist!), nest makes it easier, with a rebate finder website

Best "Smart" Stat on the Market!

Much better than my old Nest or Lyric! The remote sensors are what sold me and let's be honest, it looks great! The remote sensors can be placed throughout the home and they can monitor temperature and occupancy in that room. The stat can them utilize them to average the temperature in the home according to occupancy and schedule. I.e. I have mine set to monitor just the downstairs during the day and only the upstairs at bed time. The stat also has humidifier control and comes with a cool kit to keep the stat powered even if you do not have the "C" wire which is great! My Lyric was always experiencing dead batteries but that is no longer an issue with the ecobee.
Now, why didn't I give it 5 stars? For the same reason I love it ... the remote sensors. We do not live in a big house but it is an old house with lathe and plaster walls. The remote sensors do not have a strong enough RF transceiver to reach the stat and randomly drop from time to time. This wouldn't be an issue except that every time one drops, the stat screen goes white with an alert and it can also send you an e-mail warning. The simple solution is to disable the alert and e-mail warning but that disables ALL alerts and warnings! They should have the ability to disable alerts & warnings on an individual basis. Oh yeah ... that and fix the remote sensors for better range!

This was just a hassle to install and a hassle to use. I replaced a Nest Gen1 with this unit, I had to pay a AC company to install due to no C wire. Then afterwards it kept running my unit on Emergency heat causing my elecyric bill to jump up. I switched back to Nest.

I own two of the non-Homekit enabled version of the Ecobee 3 for each of the zones in my home. A few things stand out about the Ecobee 3.
1. It is a breeze to set up on the device or on a computer. I used the computer for the bigger screen. Most programmable thermostats takes a while jumping in and out of menus.
2. Remote sensors, this makes the Ecobee 3 stand out against any other thermostat. This will work best for larger apartments and homes and those with rooms that have a larger temperature differential. We use this to make sure the kids rooms are cool/warm when they sleep.
3. This is really a beautiful device, always a conversation starter when people see it on the wall.
4. The community is great and Ecobee is very proactive in ensuring people know how to use their device and updates.
I don't think anyone would be unhappy owning this device.

In my previous home, I had a different Thermostat and the problem was as soon as that Thermostat would sense the desired temperature around it; it will cut off leaving other rooms, especially upper level with uneven temperature and was so uncomfortable. Ecobee3 came with an idea of wireless sensors which I find it as a perfect solution to maintain comfortable temperatures in every room. Sensors come with its dedicated number through which you can figure out which sensor is for which room. You can name it your own in Thermostat which is also a cool feature. Easily connects wirelessly with Thermostat. Comes with one sensor and planning to buy 4 more sensors for other rooms. It is a DIY product but if you need any help then their Technical support team is great. People are knowledgeable and always happy to help.
Pros - Clear Instructions, Compact stylish Thermostat and sensors, Easy Installation, Easy to Use, Eco-Friendly, Lots of Features, Great Dimming, Motion-Activated. No Hassle product.
Cons - hmmmmmm, let me think.

Thermostat for People with more than one room

After helping my son install a Nest I started looking into other similar products. One of the issues my son had was their thermostat was located in their dining room and they didn't enter that room very often. Because of that the Home/Away feature of the Nest wasn't very useful. Many times when they were home the thermostat would switch to the Away mode and the house would get colder.
I mentioned to him that it seemed the Nest was designed for apartments where there is only one room.
Low and behold I happened to see a YouTube video from the CES show that highlighted a product called EcoBee3, and their tag line was "for homes with more than one room". After additional research I decided to purchase the Ecobee3.
The feature that makes the Ecobee3 special is the inclusion of a separate remote sensor. The basic kit comes with one additional remote sensor. The sensor detects both temperature and motion. If your thermostat is in a room where you don't go very often you can place the remote sensor in a location of high traffic in your home. That way the Home/Away function always will work properly. But even better, you can add up to 32 total remote sensors #should you ever need that many# so you have complete control over every room in your house. The Ecobee3 can sense which rooms are occupied and adjust the temperature to make the occupied room the desired temperature.
The Ecobee3 has apps for both IOS and Android phones or tablets as well was a PC facility. You can control the Ecobee3 remotely and monitor temperature inside and out as well as humidity and the status of your heating/cooling system.
Installation was slightly more complicated that installing my son's Nest. The Ecobee3 requires a "C" wire be available. Not a big deal but it did require installing an included wiring adapter in the furnace before I could install the Ecobee3.
Once that was done, installation was very easy, especially if you have and IPhone or IPad.
We have been using the Ecobee3 for approx. 3 weeks and both my wife and I have noticed how much more even the home temperature seems to be. With our old thermostat the house would feel cold, then the furnace would come on and it would start feeling overly warm, etc.
But the big selling point for us was the automatic control of our AprilAire humidifier. Our old setup had a separate humidistat that we had to manually control, based on the outside temperature - which mean we usually didn't set it very often and our window would steam up or get iced up during extra cold days. The Ecobee replaced the manual humidistat and has been keeping the interior humidity at the proper level since it has access to the outside temperature via it's internet connection.
I really like being able to review the data charts it provides and am looking forward to even more detailed charts once we have a full month's usage.
All in all I would highly recommend the Ecobee3 if you are looking for a "smart" thermostat, especially if your home has more than one room.

I LOVE my ecobee3- I was able to save about $40 off my electric bill in the first month of use!
The remote sensors are one of the most unique features and really make this a worthwhile investment by reading not only the temperature of each room, but also determining whether or not a room is occupied and adjusting the temperature accordingly.
I also love the smartHome/Away feature that automatically switches to "away" mode during programmed home times if no motion is detected after a given amount of time (or "home" mode if motion is detected during an away time).
Vacation mode has come in handy a few times, as well. You can program in your vacations- or, use IFTT to automatically add them- and the ecobee3 will suspend your normal schedule until you return. (Of course, you'll want to resume your schedule a couple of hours before you return so your home will be nice and comfortable when you arrive...)
Installation was very easy in my case and only took about 20 minutes. I did have to call technical support because I apparently had a non-standard wiring setup, but they answered quickly and were able to resolve my issue within a minute or two. They were very helpful and as only a semi-handy person I wouldn't hesitate to attempt installing this on my own again.
The only con I could come up with if I had to is that the app (including widgets and Watch app) is sometimes buggy- but not to the point of being unusable. It has been recently updated and improved, but before this point it could be a bit slow. If that is the worst I can say about it, then I'm okay with that!
Overall, I would totally recommend this thermostat to anyone looking to jump into the "Smart Home" game and wanting to save a few bucks!

This is way better than Nest!

I previously owned a Nest thermostat at another property and was happy with it at the time I purchased. However, when I bought my new condo the Nest refused to work with my new system. It wouldn't recognize wires that were connected and it actually burned out the controller board in my HVAC requiring a service call for replacement. I ended up replacing the Nest with my old manual thermostat while patiently waiting for a new compatible smart thermostat to come to market. I have a Daikin-McQuay water sourced heat pump with Mark IV Control Board.
The ecobee3 Smarter Wi-Fi Thermostat with Remote Sensor, Black Apple HomeKit Enabled works without issue with my HVAC system. The install was very easy. Although not required, I did purchase new Southwire 64170422 18/7 Solid Copper Class 2 Power-Limited Thermostat Wire to replace the stranded thermostat wire attached to my previous thermostat. It was simple to attach the new wiring to my controller board and feed to my thermostat location. Since I was able to feed the C wire from my controller board directly to my new Ecobee3, it wasn't necessary to use the included power extender.
The setup of the Ecobee3 is very easy with the included touch screen based input. This is much easier than the twist/push method of input on the Nest. The setup screens stepped me through the initial setup. When I got to the screen showing the wires connected it was not seeing my G wire. I checked to make sure it was connected properly and it was. I was afraid I would be stuck like I was with the Nest issues I had in the past, however the Ecobee3 gave me the option to tell it which wire was connected that hadn't been recognized. Once this was selected, everything worked without issue.
The only mistake I made during setup was with the sensor. I got a little too eager and removed the tab before my Ecobee3 was powered up. This was preventing my sensor from going through the setup process. I made a quick call to Ecobee technical support and they gave me the easy solution. Simply remove the battery from the sensor and replace the battery BACKWARDS into the sensor for 30 seconds. This discharges the sensor. Then, simply replace the battery back into the sensor in the correct position while standing in front of your Ecobee3 thermostat. This will begin the sensor setup process.
Given all that, what do I think of the thermostat? I love it! I have been monitoring my energy usage since installing the thermostat. My daily usage has decreased by at least $1 per day over the past three weeks with temperatures in the 90s. Which is great considering I work from home and do not benefit as often from the auto-away features many others do. My thermostat is near my front door and the remote sensor is a great benefit of monitoring the temperature in other parts of my home. I currently have the main thermostat and bedroom remote sensor average the temperature in the home throughout the day. At night, I only use the bedroom sensor so that it keeps me comfortable while I sleep (ignoring the temperature near my front door).
The Ecobee3 has a great iOS app, web app, and Apple Watch app to control the features from anywhere you may be. Of course, with iOS and HomeKit, you can use Siri to control the thermostat with your voice. I also use personal recipes created on https://ifttt.com/ to change functions on my thermostat based on my location. For instance, when I leave a certain area it goes into Away mode.
The Ecobee3 also contains many of the features Nest users may have grown to appreciate. For instance, when your AC has reached the correct temperature the thermostat can keep running the fan for a period of time to push the last of that cold air out of your ductwork so that it isn't wasted. It can do the same in Heat mode. The thermostat also learns how long it takes to cool/heat your home so that it is the appropriate temperature at the time you want.
There are many more features others have listed in reviews that I have certainly missed. The Ecobee3 team is very responsive to customer input and have an online community of great users helping to shape future updates and features. I am happy to have purchased an extremely 'smart' thermostat that is helping to lower my utility bill immediately after install. My energy provider also offers a rebate on the purchase so it was a great win-win purchase!

The one feature that sold me is the remote sensor. Our master bedroom is almost never the same temperature as the main hallway where the thermostat is mounted. With my old thermostat I had to set the AC very low at night to make that room comfortable. With the remote sensor I now set the thermostat for the temperature I want in the bedroom for the night time program and it keeps it right there. The install and setup where very easy for our multi-stage HVAC system. The initial programming was quite intuitive and was as easy as answering a series of on-scrren questions. I am very happy with the ecobee3 and would highly recommend it to anyone.

I've had this for 6 months now, and it's much better than my old dumb thermostat. To be fair, it replaced a thermostat that could only set the temperature and didn't have any scheduling features, but the ecobee3 is so much better than most other thermostats.
As a Wifi-enabled thermostat, I can remotely set the temperature, add vacation schedules, and even integrate it using If This Then That (IFTTT).
It may be a bit pricey, but the ease of use is worth it. Most programmable thermostats have cumbersome instruction on changing schedules, and a lot only let you set schedules for 'weekday' and 'weekend'. The ecobee3 lets you define an unlimited number of profiles for each individual day.
Pros:
* Unlimited schedules, and individual day tracking (7 unique day schedules)
* Easy to use interface
* Remote viewing and updating
* Security code setting prevents kids/guests from modifying your schedules
Cons:
* It can only control one HVAC system. If you have a huge house or otherwise have multiple thermostats to control multiple heaters or air conditioners, you'll need multiple ecobees to replace them (or a more professional system).

I purchased 2 Ecobee Thermostats about a month ago. I was pretty torn between what brand to go with. After reading many reviews and talking with friends I went with this one. I was definitely surprised how easy it was to setup and get going. The remote sensors are great not only do they help you average out the temp in your house but it is a great way to see the differnt temperatures in each individual room. I have owned my Ecobee3 with HomeKit since the beginning of August 2015 when my family moved into a new home. It was very simple to install without any issues. I can't tell you about any energy cost savings since I have nothing to compare it to but I can tell you that this is a great thermostat with some amazing features. Having the ability to have remote sensors to place around your home to either make occupied rooms set to your desired temperature or to just balance out the overall temperature in your home is a great feature that no other thermostat on the market has. The sensors also let the thermostat know if the house is occupied or not, only running your HVAC system when you are home and turning it off when you are gone. You can also set a password that has to be entered to make any temperature or setting changes which is a great feature if you have kids that are constantly changing the temperature when your not around. Siri integration takes a little practice saying the correct command in order for it to do what you want but once you get used to it, it is great for quick temperature changes or readings without having to manually do it in the app or at the thermostat. Ecobees support has been top notch and has got back to me with any questions I might have fairly quick. I highly recommend this thermostat that is looking to upgrade from their dumb (or smart) thermostat.

I did some research on smart thermostats and found that the ecobee beat out the competition. I got mine from my energy company via a promotion and have had it installed for several months now. The install was easily completed with the instructions provided and took about 30 minutes to complete.
The best part of the ecobee system is its sensors and the way it uses them to monitor room activity and temperature. This allows the system to focus only on rooms that are occupied instead of where the thermostat is installed. The upstairs of my house would always be hotter in the summer and colder in the winter than the main level where the thermostat is located. Since we have had this installed both floors are pretty close to the same temperature when occupied. I also love that they detect when you leave and will automatically set the mode to be away to save energy/money.
The ecobee system also connects to your home wifi which provides added featured like weather reporting and remote access from anywhere. There is also an online portal that you can track stats like how the weather effected run times and keeps 18 months of data! It will also work with other smart hubs or apps to allow for even more control and customizing.

Brilliant thermostat for Heat Pump users

Ecobee3 is by far the most advanced smart thermostat for Heat Pump users. It is suited for the novice that wants a simple smart thermostat as well as the more "power user" who wants to tweak the settings or interface with things like IFTTT.
I have a pair of 2-ton Goodman heat pumps and started out with Nest thermostats. It was quickly apparent that the Nest's do not know how to efficiently utilize heat pumps. I returned my 2 nests and shelled out the extra $100 for the pair of Ecobee3's (Nest was running a special a the time in Dec '14). While there was a bit more setup for the Ecobee than the Nest (but no more than a typical programmable thermostat) but well justified in the benefits. The remote sensors help to overcome slightly cooler/warmer rooms or in my case where the thermostat itself is in a non-living room (a hallway to upstairs) allowing for the HVAC to heat/cool to a comfortable temperature in our living room and kitchen (done by turning off the thermostat sensor and only using the remote sensor temperature).
The interface is beautiful, intuitive, and responsive. All the menus are easy to navigate and allow for easy access to the simple settings as well as the more technical settings. The main screen gives a clear picture of the current status of the thermostat as well as quick access to current and forecast weather for your area.
The web portal is brilliant, fantastic graphs and assessment of your houses efficiency compared to houses in your area. For those that are data inclined, all the data from the thermostats can be exported into CSV format for additional analytics.
I have a Android phone so cannot comment on the iPhone app but the app I have is well designed, responsive and has all the features needed (including vacation settings, fan settings, schedule edits, sensor temps, sensor inclusion in comfort settings)
The feedback loop into the development community is good and you can see previous requests for enhancements/features being fulfilled. There is also a good community to ask questions and learn about your thermostat (https://ecobee.influitive.com/) as well as 3rd party communities (http://www.smarthomehub.net).
As far as support, Ecobee has a very intelligent and responsive set of technical resources to help with setup, settings, and any issue. I've contact support twice, both related to understanding how the E3 was working and not for poor performance. Both times my questions were answered and the support team knowledgeable and courteous.

The ecobee3 was my entry into the smart home. I was torn between the Nest and the ecobee3, but what finally made me decide to go for the ecobee3 was the fact that it has external sensors and an open API.
The external sensors allow the ecobee3 to not only be aware of the temperature in one room on one floor of my house, but also up to 32 additional rooms. This is important because usually I'm not in the location of my thermostat and when I set the temperature, I want it to be that temperature in the room I am in. A lot of times, this prevents overheating the room I'm in when I have vents closed in the room the thermostat is in.
Another feature that is used a ton in my house is the phone app. I rarely adjust anything directly at the thermostat, so when I want to
adjust the temperature of the room I’m in, I stay in that room, set the temp and ecobee3 knows which room I want heated or cooled.
With an open API, the information from the thermostat and it's sensors are available to things such as the SmartThings hub or Apple HomeKit.
What makes me ultimately glad I made the decision to go with ecobee3 is the fact that they put effort in communicating with me and making sure I have what I need. They actively ask for questions, feedback and suggestions. Knowing that the company cares to listen to their customers and continuously improve their product helps me know they care and I will always have a product that is best for me.

I bought two ecobee3 thermostats to replace existing digital thermostats for my upstairs and main floor. Specifically I was looking for a WiFi enabled thermostat with remote sensors that could help keep the house comfortable no matter which room you are in. I did a lot of research and had selected ecobee, Nest and Honeywell as my top 3. Ultimately what drove me to choose ecobee3 was the remote sensor capabilities and glowing user reviews from the ecobee community.
Installation: I actually had to use the PEK (Power Extender Kit) as the original installer of the HVAC system did not install the 5th wire to be used as common power. I'm familiar with wiring and HVAC systems so I had no issues opening up the furnaces and installing the PEK on both. Once I had the unit's up and running they were updated with the current stable firmware release (3.6.0.877 at the time) and I was off to the races.
User Interface: The great thing about the ecobee3 user interface is that it is virtually the same on any device (very well thought out). I have the app installed on iPhone, iPad and use the desktop version (in Chrome) and they are all identical to the interface on the thermostat itself. The interface is very intuitive and has lots of nice features such as individual sensor monitoring, vacation settings, remote control of the thermostats (i.e. controlling from work) etc...
Overall Impressions: I love the ecobee3 and would highly recommend to anyone looking to upgrade their thermostats a next generation WiFi model. My house is definitely more comfortable and the issues of being hot/cold in different rooms depending on the time of the day are a thing of the past. You can tell the team at ecobee has really put a lot of thought and effort into delivering a first class product and I'm sure that will continue to be the case with Apple's support.

I was looking for a smart thermostat. I wanted something that would allow me to control it remotely and also help conserve energy. I decided on the ecobee3 because i thought the remote sensors would be a big help. They do an excellent job of helping keep the occupied parts of the house comfortable without wasting energy heating or cooling the parts we are not using.
installation was a breeze. I had the old thermostat down and the new one installed in about 20 minutes.

When I moved into my home, the thermostats there were old, dissimilar, and inconvenient to set up.
So I replaced them with ecobee3's. Setup was a snap, they wired directly in place of my old ones, covering up the marks from the old thermostats too!. Using my iphone, I got them operational and programmed within moments!
The interface is great, being able to view both upstairs and downstairs at a glance, and has also tied into my Echo perfectly too!
These look great on the wall, and oftentimes people, when walking nearby and triggering wake-up on the display, ask me more about them. I know of 3 friends who have bought these just from seeing my happiness with these!
Another benefit is the alerts/reminders. I don't have to remember when to change filters anymore. I get an email and alert when its time :)
Summer bills have been way cheap too! My house is comfortable year round thanks to these thermostats!
