So far the printer has done very well, fairly easy setup. Not very noisy. Prints much quicker than my older Epson. Does well connected and wirelessly. Interested to see how long my ink lasts, but I’m sure will be much better than the small individual inks. Wasn’t thrilled with the price, think it is a bit high. Should have waited for a sale but when need you one? You buy. For the price, $500 + tax+warranty=$600 you would think it would also do 8.5x14, but does not. The screen is smaller and harder to use than my XP-7100. Have not tried to do a good quality color picture yet.

This is my second experience with a refillable “mega-tank” style printer. The last one from Canon was...pretty good. This is my first experience with an Epson EcoTank design, and I must say, I am quite impressed! It is maybe a bit pricey when you consider it’s an ink jet, but the value proposition for the price it commands comes from its all-in-one capabilities, generous paper capacity, some neat design tricks to keep the footprint down to a minimum, and the cavernous see-through refillable ink wells that can last, with reasonable use, maybe 2-3 years between fill-ups! Let’s start with the ET-4950's admirable hardware specs. Epson put some effort into designing a printer that could go further than just “good enough.” Print resolution maxes out at 4800 x 1200 dpi while hardware scanning resolution is a more than respectable 1200 x 2400 dpi--software interpolation pushes scanned images and media resolution all the way up to 9600 dpi for archival digitization or high-definition media capture. The paper tray holds a hearty 250 sheets, and 2-sided (!!!) printing AND scanning capabilities dramatically cut down on input time and paper consumption. The hinges of the flatbed scanner cover also extend upwards to accommodate thicker books and other irregular materials for scan and copy functions. Unlike most printers that unfold into a big spidery mess, the ET-4950 cleverly keeps everything pretty close to the vest. Instead of unfolding the ADF and paper feed tray out and further up, the scanner cover offers a “drop-down” access panel that keeps plastic bits and pieces extending beyond the edges of the printer to an absolute minimum. A front fold-up flap features a small but legible 2.4” color touchscreen which provides for easy access to all major functions and configuration settings without having to use the companion app. But the real “ooh” factor here comes from the auto extending/retracting paper output tray. When a print job is started, the paper tray automatically extends from the printer’s innards like an exit ladder extending from the front of a spaceship. And yes, when you want to power the printer down, the paper output tray can retract automatically as well. This keeps the whole printer as uncluttered, streamlined, and unobtrusive as possible until you NEED to use it—this helps consume a little less tabletop real estate than most larger home or small-office all-in-ones. The transparent ink wells are a BIG step up from the competition, at least in terms of what we saw in the last model we used. Ink bottles are HUGE with supplies estimated to be roughly equivalent to 80 cartridges. Each bottle has a unique set of shoulder cutouts and tabs that mate with the corresponding ink tank’s cut-outs near the filler cap. This is critical for helping ensure that you don’t accidentally mix colors with the wrong ink in the wrong color well. There also appears to be some sort of valve setup in the bottle and tank toppers because all you need to do is flip the ink bottle over, slide into place above the filler hole, and the ink simply drains into the tank until it’s full. At that point...it just stops filling--no mess, no drip, no need to squeeze the bottles or tap it on the table, the ink simply stops flowing when the tank is full. Each of the starter bottles came with enough ink to fill up the ink tank (which, BTW, has a clever LCD ring around the fold-down cover that changes colors in time with filling instructions or supplies status making ink operations even more idiot-proof than they already are) with a little left to spare. I figured great...I’ll have some extra ink to top off one of the colors I burn through quicker than the others, but the 11-minute initialization process sucked down a HUGE amount of ink from the initial fill-up across all four tanks...down to the next fill level marker below the top! Obviously, Epson was planning ahead as the excess ink left in each bottle was enough to top the tanks back up to 100%! Connectivity options are plentiful with USB, Ethernet, FAX, and WiFi connectivity. The wireless network card is supposedly dual-band (2.4/5Ghz), but I had trouble setting mine up on our 5Ghz whole-house mesh network, even just 10 feet away from our router with direct line of sight. I switched over to our 2.4Ghz network and everything came up on the network immediately. About 5 minutes later, the printer mysteriously switched back over to the 5Ghz network and stayed there. All in all, it took me a good 30 minutes to get the printer unboxed, un-taped, filled, initialized, configured on our network, and ready to print...probably the longest printer setup routine I’ve ever encountered. BUT, the trouble seems to be worth it because the performance since then has been rock-solid with zero network drop-offs or disconnects since we put it into service. Printing noise levels are surprisingly low...the ET-4950 can easily be used in a small office environment without greatly disturbing others around you. Printing speed is reasonably fast for an inkjet with text-based single-sided jobs completing in just under 4 seconds per page...color printing obviously takes a bit longer at about 7 seconds per page while VERY large color prints at max quality took about 40 seconds. Text quality is exceptional and color print quality, even on plain paper, is vibrant and deep. It doesn’t match the output quality of a dedicated high-quality photo printer, nor is it as fast as a laser (obviously), but the ET-4950's performance in both those capacities is very VERY competitive. The ability to COMPLETELY dispense with changing out ink cartridges, and the ability to do it totally mess and error-free, is also a shot in the arm to those of us who don’t want to leave our kids contending with a South-American-sized mass of discarded ink cartridges when they grow up and inherit the earth. Minor setup hiccups aside, the Epson ET-4950 turned out to be an exceptionally capable multi-function printer with a footprint that belies its more high-capacity capabilities. Definitely recommended if you have medium/moderate home office or small office printing/scanning needs.

If you are like me its really annoying to have to keep buying expensive small ink cartridges that run out at the worst possible time. That's why the idea of a "Supertank" printer is so interesting. I took a look at the Epson EcoTank ET-4950, and it truly does seem to live up to its claim of getting rid of the cartridge trap. The Epson ET-4950 is a modern-looking all-in-one printer that feels sturdy and is ideal for use in a home office or small business. One of the first things you'll notice is that instead of cartridges, you get bottles of ink. Filling the printer's built-in tanks is surprisingly quick and easy. The EcoFit bottles are specially designed so that you can't unintentionally pour the wrong color into the wrong tank. No mess, no stress. There are easy instructions for setting everything up, and after the drivers are installed, you're good to go. This printer isn't just about saving on ink it's a full-featured machine that can print, copy, scan, and even fax. Quality of the print: The quality is great Epson's PrecisionCore Heat Free technology makes printed documents look very sharp, and color photographs and graphics look great and bright, It can print on a lot of different types of media and has a high print quality of 4800 x 1200 which is perfect for anything from school projects to professional looking images. Speed: Its pretty fast for an inkjet printer in a home office It can print in black at a rate of 18 pages per minute (ppm) and in color at a rate of 9 ppm. This is a big step up from the ET-4850, which came before this. The 30-sheet Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) is a great productivity boost because it lets you scan both sides of a document at the same time. It also has automatic two-sided printing, which is a terrific way to save paper. Getting your documents to the printer is easy because of connectivity. It supports both Wi-Fi and Ethernet so you can connect to your network without any problems, The Epson Smart Panel app is another great feature that lets you print, scan, and manage the printer right from your phone or tablet. Let's talk about the ink, which is the major reason to buy this printer. The ET-4950 comes with enough ink to last for three years. That's enough to produce about 5,500 color pages and 6,600 black pages. In other words, a new set of ink bottles is about the same as 90 separate ink cartridges. The initial cost may seem more than that of a regular inkjet printer, but the savings over time are very large. If you do the math the cost per page is really minimal. You may make back the money you spent on the printer in as little as three reams of paper (approximately 1500 pages) compared to what you'd pay for cartridges for a less expensive printer. If you print a lot, it's a no-brainer. Also, you're making a lot less plastic waste, which is good for the environment. The Epson EcoTank ET-4950 is a great option for a home office, a small business, or a household with a lot of kids. If you print a few hundred pages a month for school, business, or family photos, this printer will probably save you a lot of money and trouble in the long run. If you made the move to this printer you will never go back to cartridges, It offers everything most people need, outstanding quality, good speed, and the all-in-one features to tackle any work. I will highly recommend for anyone who wants to make a wise long-term investment in their printing setup because it has a lot of great features and minimal running costs.

We have all had home printers and what everyone hates is how fast they run out of ink and it happens exactly the day that you need to print something. Worry no more as the Epson ET-4950 is the answer with ink that just doesn’t run out. The Epson ET-4950 is a cartridge-less printer that you refill the ink, Epson has made everything super simple. The app is wonderful and set up process was a breeze, it does take about 20-30 minutes to set up so be warned. The app for the printer is easy to navigate and lets you make any/all adjustments, you can even print remotely through the app itself or by emailing the documents to a designated email address. This worked wonderfully for the few pages I tried. The app is full featured and you can create collages/ creative templets and even share the printer with a guest without having to allow them on your WiFi. One thing I didn’t except was the integration with google classroom for the teachers out there.. As mentioned at the start the best thing about this printer is that the ink LAST, Epson has rated it at 5000+ pages for black/white and color prints. Now this number is unheard off and there is no way I am going to print that much stuff anytime soon, however I did print about 40 pages (all color) and the color ink did not budge even one bit. The ET-4950 allows you to connect via ethernet wire or WiFi with 2.4 or 5 ghz. Which is a must as the 2.4 ghz wireless gets clogged quick. I am so thankful that they Epson decided to go with ethernet ports instead of the old propriety cable like most printers. The Epson also allows you to use fax if needed. I connected through WiFi and had no issues with connecting, the remote prints took a little longer to come through but while at home everything was snappy. When printing color I was able to get about 14 prints per minute, now this is lower than advertised but keep in mind this isn’t a laser printer. Print quality was excellent but you must turn up the print quality, it is on low by default. When I originally printed I noticed a lot of jagged edges however this was fixed once the print quality was raised. I also noticed that adjusting the paper type makes a huge difference in quality, when using photo paper adjust accordingly. Now the only thing I didn’t like about the printer is the printing tray, it is motorized and you have to close it or else it just sticks out. I personally prefer is the printing try is tucked away since that reduces the changes of it being damaged by kids/animals and mostly adults. The Epson ET-4950 is a great printer with one small fault. The app is simple to set up and use and offers a ton of features that are ready to go out of the box. The touch screen is super responsive and bright enough for a well lite room. The printer tray issue is a small one but besides that this is a great printer for any home or small office.

I’ve been using the Epson ET-4950 for a while now, and overall, it’s a reliable all-in-one printer that fits well in my home workspace. The EcoTank feature is a game-changer—it’s convenient and saves money on ink. Setup was intuitive using the Epson Smart Panel mobile app and took about 15 minutes. Printing anything from my phone is super easy—documents, photos, whatever I need, it’s a few taps away. One thing I really like is the pull-out touchscreen. It’s responsive and makes navigating settings a breeze compared to button-only models. Printing and scanning quality are solid for everyday use, and it’s pretty fast too — up to 18 pages per minute (PPM) for black and 9 PPM for color. That speed helps a lot with routine tasks. I Installed the print drivers on both my wife's computer and mine. For some reason when I tried to initiate a scan, I only see her computer. Mine is no listed. However, I can initiate and produce a scan just fine if I open the software on my computer first. Hopefully just a software glitch. Photo printing is good, but not perfect at the default setting. I find the photo a little under saturated and perhaps a little more red than the original. You can make color changes with the Epson Photo+ app to get closer. I do wish it had a manual paper feed. With only one tray, switching between paper types isn’t as flexible as I’d like. Pros: • Cost-saving refillable EcoTank system • Intuitive setup via the Epson mobile app (about 15 min) • Easy wireless printing from my phone • Fast print speeds (18 PPM black / 9 PPM color) • User-friendly pull-out touchscreen • Clean and efficient printing and scanning Cons: • No manual feed tray for specialty paper • Photo prints are a bit off on color Overall - great daily printer for 1 and 2 sided printing, Scanning and copies. If you are into strictly photo printing, I would look for another option.

    Could Be Best In Class

Based on my use of the Epson Ink Tank model ET-4950 (4950) for a week, I think it could be the best home office “all in one” printer out right now, though not perfect. I’ll discuss my positive, and disappointing experiences with its major functions below, but, overall, its brightest star is its ink, which is lively without needing to use much per print vs cartridge-based printers. I’ve used other brands of ink tank printers and they are of similar construction and features, but to my eyes their inks pale in comparison to the vividness Epson inks offer. So that is the chief reason, though there are others, in my opinion, to buy an Epson printer over another brand. The 4950 is Epson’s top ink tank “all in one” model. Its features are similar to the model below it except for, in my mind, one major feature: touch screen control. If you’ve ever waded through a printer menu with only arrow button navigation you know what a miserable experience that is, especially when you are in a rush. The 4950’s screen being touch sensitive is directed with swipes and taps and is a hugely better user experience than hard buttons that require click side arrow button, click side arrow button, click down arrow button, click OK button. Jumping up to the ET-4950 from its lower sibling for this feature is totally worth it. The ET-4950 also is the only ink tank printer in this family to have a fax function and a phone jack. That may be of interest to some too. I don’t have a landline anymore and also don’t send enough faxes to justify an eFax subscription so I couldn’t test this feature. BUILD QUALITY Home/home office inkjet printers have never been known for their impressive construction. Nothing has changed here in that aspect. The case, lid hingers, drawers, etc., all feel like they were designed to be the minimum required to be stable. Like an econo-car, it will get usually you where you want to go, but don’t expect more. What you are paying for here, compared to cartridge-based all-in-ones, is the time and money savings that come with having an ink tank. While I didn’t expect a beefy build one notable disappointment is the screen quality, which is on the level of a 1994 laptop. Specifically, it looks faded and is hard to read from a side angle, for example if the printer was next to you. It’s fine when looking straight at it though, and the screen can be tilted up allowing it to be read either sitting or standing. A wider viewable screen that could be read while next to the printer would have been a monster feature, but also in 2025 I expect it. While more feature related, it’s big work quality deficit is there isn’t a one-off or envelop tray that even basic laser printers have. If you need to print one envelope or a sheet of paper sized different than in the paper bin, you must unload the entire bin to print that one item. That’s a major inconvenience and waste of time. SETUP Set up and initialization is a long, but simple, process for me. It includes a firmware upgrade and install and charging the ink. From out of the box to working printer took about 30 minutes. While setup isn’t hard it does require some concentration. For example, you don’t want to accidentally load the yellow tank with blue ink. Reading instructions isn’t popular, I know, I don’t either, but I highly recommend it here because there is a specific order things must be done. Annually, I set up dozens and dozens of devices, both for myself and my tech-phobic friends and family. A long round of applause for Epson here, not just because it offers multiple setup routes – either onscreen or via phone app, or because both are mostly intuitive, but also because no registration is required before getting started, something some other printer companies demand. Nothing irritates me more than having to login to an account to change a printer setting via app. I avoid adding device apps to my phone that won’t get much use, both for privacy and clutter control. So, I opted to set up using the printer’s touch screen. However, if you don’t have a Wi-Fi router with WPS, the app will be a better set up option unless you like tapping in your password. After a few taps I was ready to move on. A couple notes though: 1. One of the last onscreen set up messages has no instructions on how to proceed. That information is in the instructions – you must press the “?” button. 2. This setup process does not include Wi-Fi setup. That must be done separately, but if you have a router with WPS it’s easy. On the 4950’s screen, select your network name then push the WPS button on your router. You’ll be connected in a minute or so. SOFTWARE / COMPUTER CONNECTION I use a Mac so Windows setup might be different. After connecting my Wi-Fi network to the 4950 my Mac and iPhone automatically recognized the printer. At this point I could print from any application that offered printing and scan using MacOS’s native Image Capture app. USB and LAN are available for wired setup too. Epson offers free printing and scanning software too which can be downloaded from its support site. These enable additional features, especially in scanning and is worth trying out. The software will alert you when new software or firmware is out so you can always be up-to-date. PRINTING Historically, I think it’s fair to say all-in-one printers have a stigma of being “jack of all trades, master of none.” Their beauty is in their compactness for small spaces rather than its superb output. But I think the 4950 could shake this reputation. I’ll admit when it comes to black and white documents, I prefer laser printers for their crisp text and rapid speed. But I’m impressed with the 4950’s abilities here. I’ve attached a photo of a laser printer vs 4950 for you do see for yourself. Mind you this is a photo of a printout, so it’s not 100% what my eyes see, but hopefully close. Even in the smallest fonts the curves are smooth and sharp. A magnifying glass is needed to see the difference between laser and the 4950. Both were printed on standard 20 lb. paper without issue. The 4950 didn’t like some heavier weights though. Specifically, I loaded up Koala brand 48 lb. letter size inkjet paper and it jammed up every time I tried to print, even after shuffling and reloading. I then tried Canon 45 lb. paper and that worked fine. So, I can’t say if the problem here is the paper brand or weight, but I thought it was worth a mention. Except for the question of whether the 4950’s paper weight limitation is 45 lb., it’s acumen at printing business documents, black and white or color, is at a professional level suitable for presentation work. My next test was photos. Here too it’s excellent thanks to, yes, Epson’s ink. If you decide to go with generic ink later you are on your own. The 4950, for sure, is purpose built as a generic home/home office/small office device. It’s unreasonable to expect its photo printing capabilities to rival a dedicated photo printer which typically use six inks rather than four. But the 4950 is no slouch either. In fact, it’s the best I’ve seen so far out of its genre. For this assessment I printed both a color-corrected RAW and JPEG photo of a giant panda direct from Adobe Lightroom. I used Canon 45 lb. matte paper each time. Printing correctly from Lightroom requires installation of Epson’s printer software so you can access the printer’s ICC profile. Once done, the 4950 delivers a print that is reliable as a proof before sending out to be printed as a poster, part of a book, etc. The JPEG print was also streak-free, sharp, colorful, and frame worthy. Of course, the 4950 doesn’t use archival photo ink so photos will likely fade over time. COPYING In every inkjet all-in-one printer I’ve ever used copying is an afterthought – a kind of bonus feature that the manufacturer didn’t spend much time developing. That is the case here. This is easily the 4950’s weakest feature and is best viewed as having it is better than not. It lacks the quality and speed of a dedicated copier or even one found on a laser printer all-in-one. Functionally, it’s fine for small jobs, say a one-off copy of a document under 20 pages. But it is slow compared to modern fast copiers that can push out collated multi-page documents in the blink of an eye. Multiple and single page originals, up to legal-size, can be loaded into the document feeder and single pages, up to size A4, or odd shaped items can be placed on the scanner glass. Also, in my experience, the document feeder is only happy with paper no thicker than resume paper. Heavier paper tends to get jammed and the Koala 48 lb. was a no-go. The main weakness here though is the copy quality. To my eye the blacks are not as deep compared to when printing, and colors can shift. For example, some blues look purple-ish. I would say it’s fine for personal use, but not presentation quality. For that you’ll want to scan, color correct if needed, and then print the photo or document. SCANNING My scanning experience was great, no matter if I used Epson’s software or 3rd party, all of them discovered and connected to the 4950 without hassle. Of course, I can’t speak for every app or OS. Loading up items to scan is exactly like copying with the same media limitations. Scanning output is terrific even before applying any needed tweaks with software. Documents, graphics, photos, are all sharp. Scanning speed various depending on the quality required but even the highest resolutions are completed in a reasonable amount of time. CONCLUSION The 4950 is an impressive ink tank based all in one printer with one feature it’s price-level competitors don’t have – Epson’s ink. While the 4950 doesn’t excel in all areas it’s unbeatable for its core functionality printing and scanning business documents and casual photos. It’s easy no account registration required set up is a bonus.

With decades of experience investing in and working with home or office desktop printers, it was always frustrating when it came time to replace costly ink cartridges. I’m sure I’m not the only one that felt this way but I eventually convinced myself it was cheaper to just upgrade to a new printer with new technology that included the ink cartridges versus investing in cartridges for an old machine. Mind you, the last printer I was using also had extra-large ink cartridges and those lasted me nearly three years however I was still dealing with old, slow, tech that often needed to be troubleshot including rebooting, resyncing, etc. That’s when I decided it was time for an upgrade and landed on Epson’s latest EcoTank ET-4950 wireless all-in-one Supertank printer that is, I believe, their flagship model for the ET line. The ET-4950 promised high-yield ink performance, wireless capability, and true all-in-one versatility. The printer was surprisingly much smaller, measuring approximately 14.8” W x 13.7” D x 9.4” H, and lighter, about 17 pounds, than my last printer which was a beast. It has a modern design that seamlessly integrated into my home office and onto my desk taking up much less space considering the large ink tanks are located on the front of the machine. The 2.4 inch color touchscreen is relatively small compared to some printers I have used in the past, however still works great and responds quickly to touch. You can easily navigate through the print, scan and copy settings and is easy to understand without having to rely on instructions. It features a 250-sheet front-loading paper tray and a rear specialty feed, supporting various media sizes and types, from envelopes to glossy photo paper. Perhaps its defining feature which, in my opinion set it aside from the competition, is its EcoTank system which is four separate refillable, extra-large ink tanks that eliminate the need for cartridges. The included ink bottles provide enough ink for thousands of print jobs which not only reduces the frequency and cost of refills, it reduces plastic waste. Initial setup was a breeze as the smart phone application walked me through the process with step-by-step easy to understand instructions and took about 15-30 minutes to finish including the time it took to automatically adjust the print settings after filling the tanks. After the initial set up and printing a test page, I jumped straight into printing a colorful photo onto glossy printer paper and I was amazed at the color, brightness and sharpness of the photo as if I paid to have it printed somewhere. Speaking of performance-related specs, the ET-4950 can print at a rate of up to 18 pages per minute (ppm) for black and 9.0 ppm for color. It has a maximum print resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi and you can really see the clarity of any colorful documents you print; text is sharp, graphics are smooth, and photos are detailed and richly colored. It is able to print double-sided reducing paper consumption. The copy and scanner is very efficient and fast with a maximum resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi. The 35-page automatic document feeder can handle legal size (8.5” x 14”) documents. It supports Wi-Fi 5 with mesh connectivity, Wi-Fi Direct, Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print Mopria Print Service and Epson’s Smart Panel app which you’ll have to download for remote management and I feel works better than some of the other print services. If you’re “old-school”, It also has an ethernet connection if you prefer that. I haven’t tried it yet or would know what it would work to print but it also has Voice-Activated Printing that is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for hands-free operation. You are reminded of maintenance, which is basically ensuring the ink cartridges are filled, print heads are cleaned and aligned, etc. (stuff you get used to after dealing with printers for so long) through the software you can download through Epson’s support website, via the smart phone application or on the color touchscreen. Overall, the Epson EcoTank ET-4950 has plenty of bells and whistles to cover all the bases of an at-home or office printer, is compact and light considering the tech packed inside it, steps up on the innovative front and should not be overwhelming for even beginner users. I would recommend it to anyone in the market for a great printer investment with peace of mind that you won’t be paying up the Waa zoo for replacement cartridges eventually.

ECONOMIC OPERATION WITH LARGE INK SUPPLY

I have liked Epson inkjet printers for a number of years based on their excellent print quality, good functionality and scan and fax software that work well. Based on my prior experience, I have shared my opinion and recommendations that Epson produces the best inkjet printers. Since 2020 I have owned an outstanding Epson WF-7840, large format inkjet printer (visible in one photo). The WF-7840 does everything I need an inkjet MFP to be capable of. However, its sole “shortcoming” is related to the ink supply. The cartridge-based Epson DURABrite Ink is superb, but it can become expensive for “everyday” printing, and the page yield can be less than hoped for. Ink-tank printers can potentially mitigate the ink anxiety associated with cartridge-based printing. The new ET-4950 is Epson’s latest EcoTank printer. It is a slightly improved version of the ET-4850. Specifically, the ET-4950 implements Duplex (2-Sided) Scanning, and modestly improved print speeds. Duplex scanning is very important to me, and I believe that it is illogical to support duplex printing without also supporting duplex scanning. Epson EcoTank Supertank printers have a large ink capacity. Epson claims a page yield of 8,500 pages for Black ink and 6,500 pages for Color inks (6,600 pages / 5,500 pages for the ink supplied with the printer). Epson advertises that a set of Epson 502 ink refills will support up to three years of printing needs (based on an average monthly print volume of about 150 pages). Epson claims that each set of 502 replacement ink bottles is equivalent to about 80 - 90 cartridges. The page yield for the initial supply of ink is reduced by the ink consumed by the printhead charging (priming) process. The general consensus is that ink tank printers have the lowest cost per printed page among the alternative printing technologies. However, the initial investment for an EcoTank printer will be higher than a cartridge printer with comparable features or performance since printer manufacturers rely on the profitability of expensive ink cartridges to substantially subsidize the selling price of printer hardware. The ET-4950 is compact and lightweight. It measures 14.8” Wide x 13.7” Deep (19.9” with the paper output tray extended) x 9.4” Tall (10.6” with the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) paper input tray extended). It weighs only 16.1 lbs. For comparison, my WF-7840 is much larger and weighs 45.4 lbs. The light weight may be at least partially attributable to the cabinet/case, paper input tray and output tray all appearing to be thin plastic, some of which flex easily. The hinges of the ADF and scanning unit do not appear to be robust and they appear vulnerable to lateral stresses when opening/closing those components. The ADF and scanning unit easily twist on their respective hinges. Overall, the physical construction of the ET-4950 feels delicate, including the paper input and output trays. The input paper tray and its hinged front closure have to be pulled open and pushed closed in order to load paper into the printer, and they should be sturdy. Setting up the ET-4950 was easy. Epson recommends using the Epson Smart Panel smartphone app for set up (the option remains to use a PC). The Smart Panel app accomplished the setup easily and without any issues. All instructions were clear and concise accompanied by illustrations or animations. Printer features and settings are accessible using the small, 2.4” Color Touchscreen LCD Front Display panel. The touchscreen is a lower cost resistive screen rather than a capacitive screen more typically found on devices including printers. Resultantly, the screen is low resolution and can be difficult to read. Additionally, the small size dictates small touch targets, which sometimes makes touch selections more challenging. The control panel can be rotated upwards for improved access and screen visibility. Filling the ink tanks with the supplied Epson 502 ink was quick, easy and mess-free. Each bottle has a dispenser which is uniquely keyed to the appropriate tank filling valve for that color. The process of “charging” / priming the printhead required about 11 minutes and consumed about 25% of the black ink and slightly less than 25% of the color inks. There was a small quantity of ink remaining in each bottle, which can be added to the partially depleted tanks at any time. Tanks do not need to be near empty in order to refill them. To print, scan and fax using a computer, Epson software is downloadable from Epson’s Support site. For Windows 11, the “Drivers and Utilities Combo Package Installer” installs the following: • Printer Driver v3.02 • Scanner Driver and Scan 2 Utility v6.7.81 • Fax Utility • Photo+ • Scan OCR Component • ScanSmart • Software Updater The Epson software is very good. Epson Scan 2 is easy to use, flexible and full featured. The Epson Fax Utility is also excellent. Many people regard faxing as being archaic, but for certain purposes it is essential. One notable attribute of Epson Fax is the ability to direct incoming faxes to a PC folder, where they are saved as PDF files, saving paper and ink vs. automatically printing all faxes immediately upon receipt. The ET-4950 is a Multi-Function Printer (MFP), which includes printing, copying, scanning and faxing functionality in a single device. The specifications are decent. The ET-4950 has a single, non-removable input paper tray with a capacity of 250 sheets in sizes ranging from 3.5”x5” through 8.5”x14”. This paper tray is the only paper path for the printer. Scanning and copying are possible from either the 8.5”x11.7” flatbed or the 30-sheet capacity, full-duplex (2-sided) auto-document feeder (ADF) which will accommodate scanning of up to 8.5”x14” paper. The ET-4950 supports 4800x1200 DPI maximum print resolution. The scanner optical / hardware resolution is 1200 x 2400 DPI, with a maximum interpolated resolution of 9600 DPI. Input color depth is 48 bit, and output color depth is 24 bit. Epson lists a print speed of 18 Pages Per Minute (PPM) for single-sided black, and 9 PPM for single-sided color. Double-sided printing is 7 PPM for black, and 5 PPM for color. Epson does not list the First Page Out Time, but I found that it requires about 20 seconds for the paper output tray to be extended before printing even begins. Photocopying speed is listed as 11.5 Copies Per Minute (CPM) for black, and 5.7 CPM for color. Advertised printing speeds are based on ISO/IEC Standard 24734 and copy speeds are based on ISO/IEC 29183 which specifies detailed parameters for testing the performance of copiers and multifunction devices. Actual printing speeds are dependent upon what is printed. More complex content results in a longer print time. In use, the ET-4950 printing speeds were decent for both single and double-sided sheets. Time for first sheet out, for a very complex color graphic page, was 38 seconds from a sleeping printer and only 21 seconds when the output tray was already open. Two-sided black & white or mixed text sheets required 40 seconds from a sleeping printer. Scanning speed was fair. Scanning an 8.5” x 11” page to PDF from the flatbed at 400 DPI took 1:37, however at 300 DPI it only required 21 seconds. Scanning 10 single-sided pages from the ADF consumed 2:02, while 10 double-sided pages required 4:50. There was some problematic skewing, but no misfeeds. Both Epson Scan 2 and Epson SmartScan are excellent, easy and functional. The ET-4950 is not the slowest printer, nor is it particularly fast. The greatest attribute of ink tank printers is the low cost per printed page which is the result of the relatively low cost of “bulk” ink, vs. the high cost of cartridge ink. The cost of a full set of Epson 502 Claria (Black-Pigment, Colors-Dye) refill ink bottles for the ET-4950 is within just a few dollars of a set of Epson 812 DURABrite (Black & Color-Pigment) cartridges that are required by my WF-7840. The significant difference however is that the 502 ink should yield an estimated 6,000 – 8,000 pages, while the same cost should yield approximately 300 pages (and I have never even come close to 300 pages per cartridge) with my WF-7840. The 502 ink dried reasonably rapidly and did not become smeared with the drying time setting on “Standard”. The print quality of the ET-4950 is good! Close inspection, including under magnification, of Epson Test & Sign-Off Print Samples confirmed the good print quality. I also printed and compared sheets from my WF-7840. Color saturation and color and grayscale gradation were good. Lines were sharp and definition was very good. There was no color bleeding or banding. There were no printing defects observable, even under magnification. Text was also very good with high sharpness and clarity. The output tray is power extendable/retractable and automatically extends when a print-job is initiated. However, the tray only power retracts when manually powering down the ET-4950, or with the use of the very small soft-button (icon) on the touchscreen. Several characteristics including physical construction give me the impression that the ET-4950 was designed for manufacturing economy. Of course, without disassembly there is no means to assess the internal components. The potential reliability and durability of the printer is as yet unknown. The product Warranty is 1 Year. Download and carefully read and understand the Warranty Policy. Check out the display model in the store. I have mixed impressions of the ET-4950 so far. Print quality is good, but I have concerns about the potential of value engineered design and construction rather than performance based design, which can only be resolved after a longer period of ownership and use.

I have been using the Epson EcoTank ET-4950 an AIO printer for a little over a week and I must say this is a must-have tool to meet your productivity needs for your home or small office. The EcoTank is a fax, scan, print and a copier all in one. The setup process does take a little bit of time but it’s not complicated. You will need to download an app if you are setting this up using your phone. Once the app is downloaded, the app will find the printer and start the setup process which takes about 10 minutes to complete. The printer can be used with either a wired connection via an ethernet port, or a USB port option or wireless if you prefer and I have tested both configurations and worked great without any issues. The printer has a color printing speed of about 9 ppm and 18ppm for black and has a 4800x 1200 dpi printing resolution, which is considered really good, and the print quality is crisp and vibrant. You have two options for scanning, you can either use the flatbed or the automatic document feeder scanner up top with the scanning resolution of 1200 x 2400, which is also considered a good resolution for capturing fine details. The automatic document feeder is a huge time-saver for scanning multi-page documents, and the duplex printing feature helps save paper and is environmentally friendly. The copier function on this AIO in one is also a great option to have for home and office needs. The best feature of this AIO besides the multifunctionality is the EcoTank system. The EcoTanks are large refillable tanks, that are easy to fill, have a greater printing capacity and the ink is much more economical than your traditional printer cartridges and on top of that don’t have to worry about your printer telling you that it’s a genuine toner cartridge. Overall, the ET-4950 checks all the boxes—easy to use, high-quality prints, low cost of operation, and great features for everyday use. If you’re tired of dealing with cartridge printers and want something reliable and efficient then look no further. I would definitely recommend this to anyone in the market.

The EcoTank ET-4950 is a great small printer for home or office. Especially for those who hate to spend so much on ink cartridges. This machine comes with ink bottles that are supposed to last 3 years - which they say is the equivalent to 80/90 ink cartridges. It is supposed to be enough ink to print 6,600 black pages and 5,500 color pages. Not only is that a cost savings- but great for the environment if you are not using that many ink cartridges. During the set-up process, you are prompted to download the Epson Smart Panel app. It walks you through the process of setting up the printer step-by-step. It was very easy and and easier than trying to read some paper that folds out six times. You just unscrew the bottles and fill the tank. There was no mess. Some of the highlights of this Wireless Print, Copy, Scan & Fax machine are: prints 18 black pages per minute and 9 color pages per minute, auto 2-sided prrinting and scanning, 2.4" color touchscreen display, and smart mobile printing. It has automatic two side printing, automatic reduction/enlargement. I have priced the bottles to refill the ink and it looks like it is $50-$60 for all four bottles. Not bad for three years worth of ink.

    Tiny Printer

This is the first Epson printer I have used. This model is very small and light weight (9.4-inch h 14.8-inch w x 13.7-inch d and 16 lbs.). Prints quickly and not having to deal with the ink cartridges is a BIG plus (goodbye monthly ink subscription). Also scans/copies very accurately. Having only one paper tray is limiting and as such printer is probably best for students or home use. I did not try the fax option. Easily unpacked but a lot of tape so make sure you find it all. I set it up using my desktop computer and software downloaded from printers site. I found the software not very intuitive, and I had to manually select wifi and enter info using the tiny 2-inch color screen on printer. It would not register printer at end of setup either. Filling the onboard ink “wells” was easy using the provided 4 color bottles. The front of the printer has scales showing ink levels. Multiple windows apps were installed that made it a tad confusing as to which to use for printing/scanning/etc. I did wind up figuring it out and it printed fast. I could not find any “picture” settings – only documents – but could be operator error. Several color “test” pictures did look nice using document and picture paper. Even in draft mode the pages were easily read. To collect printed pages the paper tray “opens” and a tray slides – which sticks out an additional 6 inches from front of printer. Tried scanning a colorful birthday card & received an error message that selected area was too large using 9600 dpi resolution - same at 6400 dpi. 200 dpi scanned but took over 3 minutes. 600 dpi – 2 minutes and 300 - 20 seconds. It scanned the entire tray area, not just the card. So had to edit the scan – but I may have missed a setting. It was very accurate. 1-year limited warranty. I worry that the ink in bottles or printer may dry out – only time will tell. The opening/closing printed tray seems overly engineered and worry it could a “break” point. Overall, a nice compact printer that is somewhat let down by software and having only 1 paper tray. Not having to deal with replacement ink cartridges is great though. Would recommend to anyone looking for a small all in one.

    BLOWN AWAY BY THIS PRINTER

This EcoTank 4950 is by far one of thee best inkjet printers i have used in a long time. Being in the I.T. world for over 30 years, i have used alot of different printers over this time, and I understand there are other versions (models) of Epson's EcoTank series or line, but this is the first time i have ever used an Epson Inkjet like this; so i was pretty surprised by how great this thing is compared to all the other competing brands out there (HP/Brother/Canon etc). The one thing I dislike most about using inkjet printers is replacing the cartridges, i feel like you get 100, maybe full color prints from those other models before you find yourself needing to replace black or colored cartridges. This printer for me, breaks that mold. I setup the printer, filled up the inkwells with the 'full' sized included cmyk colors and started immediatly printing 100 full colored photo paper 5x7 photos, and the ink wells barely broke 1/4 of the full tanks, leaving 3/4 more to go. For me that was the win me over point. Pros: HiRes Autofeed Scanner (or scanner bed) Fax Touchscreen Easy keyed-notched ink fills for no error fills Fast printing (18 ppm- black / 9ppm color) Easy to Print from phone or tablet Two side printing Cons i really thought i would have things to put here that i didnt like about this printer, but i really cant think of anything i disliked. The printing was quick, the photos looks outstanding, the ink was barely touched for how much i printed at first. The setup was very easy, between my windows 11 machines, or my iphone or android devices it was as simple as selecting 'print'. Setup of the paper(s) and sizes etc was pretty straight forward, any issues were presented on the clear little touch screen, so very easy to manuver. I would really recommend this printer for anyone looking for an all in one for their office or home. you really can't go wrong here for the value of these features and whats included.

This Epson printer is the best printer I've bought. So much better than the HP ones we've had in the last few years. Faster, quieter, so easy to use. The display screen so easy to view and bigger than the other Epson printers and much better than the HP ones. The ink is much better than the cartridges. I love it,

I was an HP printer guy for at least two decades. However, repeatedly jamming ink nozzles and the high cost of ink cartridges (including HP's instant ink program) finally got me to try an ink tank printer. We got this about six weeks ago. Here are the results so far: - Setup was painless using the app. - Apparently print head clogging can actually be MORE of an issue with tank printers than cartridge printers. So far, we have not seen this, however, due to the ink averaging 1/10th the price of cartridge printers, I print a colorful page at least every two weeks to mitigate this. - Changing your wifi router/cable modem after installing this will likely confuse this printer. It took me an hour to finally decide uninstalling and reinstalling all the printer software was the only way to acclimate the printer to a new router with a new IP address. After doing this, worked flawlessly again. - Print quality is at least as good as our prior $500 HP printer. - Scanning software works well. I miss having a flash drive port to scan docs to but having a document go directly to a PC or phone has been problem free so far. - Footprint is actually fairly moderate. The output tray can be pushed inside when not in use and opens and extends automatically when you print something. - Not silent but is at least a little quieter than our HP printers. Certainly not noisy. Will update this review if issues develop in the coming months but so far very happy with the switch.
