Your experience is not common; however, past observations of known cases indicate that the cookware might be adjusting to the heat being applied to it. Similar to what you have experienced, some consumers have reported a smell coming from the cookware, but without realizing that the open flame might be making contact with the handles and causing them to burn (if using a gas stove).
