Excellent Show for Fans of Suspense and Dark Humor

Fargo is loosely based on the 1996 Coen brothers film of the same name and is actually shown to be linked to the film through an event shown early in the season. However, the film is not required viewing for the series (though I'd definitely recommend seeing the film, anyway, because it's fantastic).
The show does a great job of capturing the tone of the movie, which is a mix between intricately-plotted suspense and (often absurd) gallows humor. Billy Bob Thornton is menacing and unsettling as Lorne Malvo, a chameleonic agent of chaos who does wretched things seemingly just to see what will happen. Martin Freeman strikes a perfect balance as Lester Nygaard, in that you'll catch yourself grudgingly rooting for him one instant and then hoping that he'll get his comeuppance the next. Relative newcomer Allison Tolman shines as Deputy Molly Solverson, a competent investigator harried by nitwits in her department's upper echelon. The supporting cast--featuring such names as Colin Hanks, Oliver Platt, Key & Peele, and Bob Odenkirk--all turn in equally wonderful performances.
The narrative is a twisting labyrinth of situations and relationships that go from bad to worse, usually at the behest of Thornton's character. The show manages to inject its quirky sense of humor into tense scenes, providing moments of levity before ratcheting up the suspense further or flooring the audience with shocking brutality (and the violence on this show is brutal in some instances).
In all, this series is a must-own for Coen fans (who probably already bought it or watched it on FX) and fans of suspenseful stories where events spiral out of control for everyone involved. If you're into dark, dramatic stories with a side of well-written humor (this show could easily be compared to Breaking Bad), you'll probably find a lot to like here, too.

Excellent series (mini-series really)

Excellent mini-series (which is what season 1 really is). Ties in at one point with the movie (which makes it qualify as a sort of sequel to the film). Remember the money buried in the snow by one of the kidnappers in the original film (and how he couldn't find it again later)? Well, now we know what happened to all that cash.
Tommy Lee Jones is absolutely mesmerizing as the hired assassin passing through town who becomes embroiled in the life of (and a murder committed by) a local. What a dangerously scary guy Jones plays. Deserving of the Emmy he received.
The other leads are also absolutely superb. What a truly fine production this program is.
It is a series I will watch again many times. Simply had to own it!

First of all, I really like the Fargo stocking hat included in the "Collector's Edition." I wear it all the time. I really hate spoilers so all I'll say about it is that I grew up in Upper Great Plains and during this time, there were all sorts of peculiar events happening including what the locals later called the Ollie North Express (a DC-3 landed south of Selby, South Dakota, loaded with tons of pot, the police arrested the pilot, the plane disappeared). Oh yeah, the rumors of Satanic Worship by community and political leaders south of Bismarck, ND including virgin sacrifice...

A Perfect Season of Television

When I first heard of this show, I wasn't really excited about it at all. The film is what I consider one of the greatest movies of all time, and I thought a remake of it in a different medium would be extremely unlikely to work for me. But Noah Hawley captured the brilliance of the Coen's perfectly, creating an epic masterpiece equal to the film. Every actor is brilliant in their role, every story is fascinating, and every moment is filled with incredible comedy, tragedy, introspection, tension, or violence. As per Hawley's and the Coen's style, sometimes all of these things occur at once.

When I watched this show during it's original broadcast on FX I liked it a lot, but I didn't love it. Now that I can watch three episodes in a single sitting, and don't have to wait a week between episodes, I have come to appreciate the show even more. Some of the episodes are a bit slower than others and I think that killed some of the shows momentum in the original broadcast. But now that I can watch it at my own pace I can appreciate the slower episodes for what they are.
The series is incredibly well acted and written, and I don't feel like there is a single line of dialogue wasted.
Even better than the movie.

Given the expectations that come along with trying to equal or surpass a Coen Brothers classic, Noah Hawley had a lot to live up to. I'm glad to say that this show absolutely nails the look, sound, and feel of the Fargo film and gives us an entirely new story set in the same world. The acting from Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Colin Hanks, and newcomer Allison Tolman is all top notch, and the story that plays out over the 10 episodes of season 1 never has a dull moment or wastes your time with anything less than excellence. Highly recommend this instant classic of television.

The television equivalent of a page-turner. Settle in for a weekend and watch it end to end! I look forward to the next chance I have to revisit it. This was a blind buy - purchased based on reputation. I was more than impressed. At first I was drawing comparisons to the original film, and connections are certainly there, but before long I was immersed in the series and realized this story holds its own independently and is perhaps even more enjoyable to me than the excellent film was. This is a fine blu-ray release. Highly recommended!

When I first heard of a Fargo series, I expected a made-for-TV remake of the Coen Bros. film. Boy, was I delightfully wrong! The series is done anthology style, so every season tells a self-contained storyline, with minor connections to the 1996 film, as well as to other seasons of the show. The series also jumps in time, with this season taking place in 2006. The acting, story, direction-- everything was pulled off extremely well. Fans of top-notch crime drama like Breaking Bad will most likely love this show.

I was hesitant when I heard they would be turning a 98 minute film into a television series, but I decided to check it out after a friend recommended it. Honestly, if I had known about the stellar cast list (Colin Hanks! Martin Freeman! Billy Bob Thornton!), I would have watched it long ago. The acting, especially Mr. Freeman and Mr. Thornton, is top-notch. The script and story are on-point, too.
If you're a fan of suspense, dark comedy, or especially the original film, you should check this out. It is worth your time.

If all shows were this well written and acted, we'd all be constantly glued to our TVs. The producers have painstakingly made sure this has all the nuance and flavor of the movie, though it's an original. It's as if the Cohen brothers have inhabited the writers and directors. It's quirky and oh so clever and all the seemingly unrelated threads come together in the end. Just like a Cohen brothers film. Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman are at the top of their game. Get this one!

Anyone who liked the movie Fargo from the Coen Brothers will be delighted to watch the TV adaptation of the film. The Tv show of Fargo is loaded with stars such as Billy Bob Thornton, Colin Hanks, Martin Freeman, Bob Odenkirk, and Oliver Platt. The movie and Tv show of Fargo are considered dark comedy. Some people don't really like dark comedy, some people love it. It all depends on your sense of humour. To me, dark comedy is like wine, you usually got to acquire a taste for it. Most of the time, you're either gonna love dark comedy or you're gonna hate it, there's no in-between. I highly recommend this to anyone that liked the movie Fargo or for anyone who likes dark comedy. Also, I read they renewed this show for an additional season, which'll be sort of a prequel season. There's not many TV shows that feel like a whole movie by the time you reach the end of the season, this is one of them. The Coen brothers successfully brought their movie Fargo to TV and it's really good.

Passed up on watching this TV Series when it first came out. Boy do I regret that. Now I am playing catch-up! Fortunately, I was able to pick up season #1 on a Black Friday Sale at Best Buy. I have seen all 10 episodes twice already. I put Season #2 on my Christmas list, but I don't know if I can wait that long. Definitely a great DVD series to watch over and over.

For those thinking that this show can't live up to the film, I assure you, it does, and in spades! The plot is as captivating, and has the same middle of nowhere niceness mixed with dark things in the background like the film. Every actor is magnificent, especially Billy Bob Thorton, who delivers such a funny, yet menacing man, who brings chaos wherever he goes. The show's also very funny, and has the same complex and interesting themes of the film. I can't wait for season 2!

First off, this special edition came with a beanie! I love beanies!
This series is so incredibly well done its no surprise the Coen brothers gave their blessing to it.
It is not a retelling of the original film. It's a new story (stories) that is presented in the same fashion as the film. Billy Bob Thorton and Martin Freeman are spectacular. All around a great cast. Well written and acted. Funny, suspenseful, dark, and sometimes brutal... This is amazing television.

I was not too confident in this show concept when it was announced, so I skipped it on TV. After the season ended, I beard amazing reviews of season 1. So, I decided to blind buy this product. I am glad that I did; this show is excellent. Billy Bob Thornton was great, Martin Freeman was phenominal, and the main star was a revelation.
The disc itself is great, some decent special features, and it comes with a Fargo beanie.
Definitely recommended

This first season was very well done! The cinematography is beautiful, and the character progression is awesome. The storytelling is a little bit of a slow burn, but then so was Breaking Bad. Similar to BB, the main character goes from pansy to hardened criminal. And Billy Bob Thornton is absolutely fantastic as the main antagonist!

I had only caught a few episodes of season two of Fargo when I saw this at Best Buy. I couldn't pass it up for the price, and whoa I got my money's worth. Billy Bob Thorton plays one heck of a maniacal character and Better Call Saul's Bob Odenkirk plays a local sheriff. The casting, except for the reject with the horrible Austrailian accent, is outstanding and much of the goings on are far fetched but still possible.
