I was surprised by the movie. I have to say that I thought it would be long and tiresome to watch like a lot of Asian movies because it goes on and on. But it took me by surprise, the movie was well made from the editing to the cinematography, from the acting to the costumes and settings of the era the film was supposed to be based on. The movie left me wanting to visit China because of the various lush and beautiful locations the picture was filmed on from the Great Wall to the city streets. The acting was superb, especially from the three leads, and the leading lady (Rene Yui) reminded me of Audrey Tatou from Amelie and Da Vinci Code and they even have the same bob haircut in the movie. Some parts where funny as well, especially when Wei Ying'er's prim and proper mother was around played by the same actress, who played the conservative mother of Wei Tung in Ang Lee's Wedding Banquet. And the unrequitted love between the two main actors in the movie was done achingly sublime. The only problem that I had, which is very slight, was following up with the subtitles while trying to watch the movie, but I guess that goes for every foreign flicks. So if you love an unconventional bittersweet love story filled with emotions, humor and drama in the backdrop of the China as it goes through its own changes as well when WWII had an impact in the entire world, then this movie is for you.
