Flir vs. Dropcam
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m not a newcomer to IP cameras and I can say with confidence that FLIR is better suited for my needs. I own a few Dropcams. Dropcam is ok but I’m not entirely pleased. The cameras’ performance has come a long way since I bought them, but as it turns out it wasn’t the right choice for me. I wanted to have a system that I can use both inside and outside my office. I tried getting outdoor footage with Dropcam by placing the it facing out on my window, but the IR light reflected off the glass and all I got was a mirror image of the camera itself - not very helpful. When I saw that FLIR is both for indoor and outdoor use I decided to try it out (with additional, separately sold casing of course). I bought one camera and I have to say, it’s a whole different ball game. I don’t have to scan through my timeline. Why do I need hours of usless footage, even if important events are marked? FLIR creates short videos which summarizes all movements around the camera. Even more than that FLIR combines all those movements into one video by superimposing the videos one atop of the other. In terms of connectivity I’ve been having some issues with Dropcam. The cameras keep disconnecting and I lose footage. I can see that the folks at FLIR worked their way around it by adding a memory card. I also experienced less network glitches. Reading the reviews on Amazon I can see that subscription is a sore point for IP Camera users. I’m a heavy user myself and am willing to pay the price. I have the Dropcam Clouds subscription and the FLIR Cloud subscription. For lighter users who aren’t interested in paying it’s nice to know that with FLIR you get two free days of recording. Without a subscription on Dropcam you can only view live feed, which I guess why Dropcam is better suited as a baby monitor than a security camera. All in all, unless something changes over the next couple of days (if so I’ll update), I’m going to start switching out the Dropcams for FLIRs.

Fantastic Security Camera - FLIR FX
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Interested in home monitoring I decided to try the FLIR FX camera and was quite pleasantly surprised. Setup was as easy as registering through the iphone app for a cloud account, scanning the QR code on the bottom of the camera and typing in my home wifi password... setup complete. -One of the normal issues I have with a camera like this is the image warp associated with the wide-angle lens but FLIR has taken care of this with "Angle Correction" which smartly de-warps the image on the fly. -Shortly after installation the iOS app informed me there was a firmware upgrade available for the camera. I am used to having to plug in the camera into a usb port on a computer, download the firmware and re-flash but FLIR has made this process much easier. Click the button on the app and the firmware upgrade is done wireless from remote. -At first I was streaming the video in HD but the Standard definition video is so good I switched to SD. Infrared mode works as well as advertised... I ended up turning off night lights as the IR mode works better in complete darkness. The IR images show very distinguishable features even if streaming in SD mode. The microphone sounds stream through the app in perfect clarity (this can be muted), as does the intercom which allows you to talk through the phone back to the camera. You can even set the app to send you notifications by app alert on your phone when the camera detects motion (this can be disabled as well if you are tired of watching your cats fight or you know someone is at home). -RapidRecap and Snapshot are the reasons I will buy more FLIR FX cameras and add them to my home monitoring plan. The phone app makes creating a recap video as easy as moving a slider through a "history" wheel to select an 8-hour time period. I was a little shocked when I saw the recap video. The video compresses time by showing and tagging moving objects or people with timestamps. So what you end up with is a video that quickly shows moments in time but these moments overlap to make viewing faster. Let me explain... If I am moving through the coverage area and perhaps I move through the camera coverage area 15 times in the span of an hour or so the recap video will show 3 or 4 versions of me at the same time on screen all with timestamps floating above my head. That hour of movement may be covered in 10-15 seconds of recap time but all of my movements are clearly labeled by a time-label that floats above my head in the recap video as I move around. "Creepily awesome" is the best way to describe the incredible manner that FLIR FX recaps moments in time. -As for my own personal recap... I need more of these cameras to cover the outside and inside of my home. The FLIR FX experience is fantastic.

Great resolution; laggy software
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The FLIR FX camera has a great field of view and can see more area than the other cameras that BB offered in their store. Setup was fairly easy with the iOS app and QR code scanning function. My biggest complaint would be the software. It lags in it's notifications significantly and the feature that allows you to ignore certain parts of the image does not work at all for me.

Piece of junk
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought two directly from Flir. I have connection problems frequently. No problem with my Samsung wireless camera. Latest software update in the last week is causing even more problems. They now offer web access via a PC. It doesn't work, they are having issues. The camera, the design, the functionality is great, but the execution is still far from prime time. Rapid Recap is cool, but I have problems with it also, had to ask for a refund for the yearly subscription because it didn't work correctly. Too much frustration. Steer clear of this product. Yes its similar to the Nest Cam, but not even close.

Excellent Performer and Very Useful Features
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased the FlirFX version with the all-weather outdoor housing accessory... I did a ton of research before ultimately purchasing the Arlo unit by Netgear initially, based on a Best Buy associate's recommendation. The Arlo is a great unit, especially being completely wireless, but it's effective motion detection distance was insufficient for my purposes (roughly 15 feet). So, more research, and... more research. I was nearly convinced that I needed to consider a much more expensive system to suit my needs. I liked the features of the FlirFX and figured I would try it as the last chance of having an acceptable system at the $200 to $300 price point. I was slightly discouraged by some of the negative reviews related to false positives in motion detection and difficulty of setup... I experienced neither of those problems. If your home wifi network is even moderately suitable, you have enough bandwidth to reliably stream video (Netflix, Hulu, iTunes) and you understand how it works, how you access it, etc., I can't see many people having issues setting up this camera. You download the app, scan a QR code for pairing, enter your wifi password and you're done. Unless the camera is defective, I don't think Flir could have made setup much easier. Motion detection has been excellent. I purchased the camera primarily to keep watch over our vehicles, which sit in a parking lot in a condominium setting. My truck is approx. 80 feet from the camera, and the FlirFX has had no issues picking up movement around it. Since cars are always moving around, the motion capture did begin to get out of hand, but one of the excellent features of the FlirFX camera solved that in a heartbeat; "Smart Zone" technology. With Smart Zone, the app places a grid over your viewing area, and you can tell the camera to detect movement only in the areas you want it, while all other areas are ignored. Superb. Finally, the biggest selling point of the FlirFX for me so far, is the "Rapid Recap" feature. Truly fantastic, unbelievably helpful, and something that introduces an entirely different use for a camera. This feature will create up to an 8-hour window of footage captured by the camera (12 hours with a premium subscription) and create custom video clips allowing you to review everything in minutes. So far, it seems to be a one-hour to one minute ratio, i.e. I can review 8 hours of video footage in about 8 minutes; and my camera is setup to record almost every few minutes. With less motion and sound sensitivity and more Smart Zone restrictions, reviewing an 8 hour window would likely take only a few minutes. The way Rapid Recap works, is that it superimposes all the captured elements and displays them over the same camera view/shot, with time stamp indicators, so you can easily locate and review the individual related video for anything you see that warrants a closer look. My intention was to basically let the camera do its thing, and review footage only if something happened to the vehicles or the property. With the quick review capabilities of Rapid Recap, there's a clear benefit to reviewing all of the day's footage to possibly detect suspicious behavior before something bad happens, i.e. someone scoping out your home, doing some pre-burglary research, etc. Flir is currently having some issues with the IOS version of the app, which can affect notifications, but I gave this product the full 5 stars because I'm confident they will resolve those issues, and the camera is just packed with excellent features for an extremely affordable and easy to use platform.

Good camera
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a solid camera with good support. It does everything it's designed to do and does it perfectly. I only wish the bezel was black. I don't want attention drawn to it by its design characteristics. I used a black sharpie to black out the standout design.

Worth it but hoping it gets better
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have been debating whether or not to give this 4 or 5 stars. I ultimately settled on giving it 4. I am hoping it eventually deserves 5, I just bought my third one because I see the potential and think all it will take is some firmware and cloud service upgrades to get it there. It is a pretty good unit but could still use a little work... The Hardware The overall look and feel is nothing special, I could take it or leave it. The camera is heavier than I expected (which is good) and it still worked after it slipped out of my hands and fell 4 feet to my hardwood floor (that's good too). The internal battery and SD card is nice - that right there is why I am buying more of these and not more Dropcams.

Worst Purchase Decision I Ever Made
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I would like to start off by saying that this is the first negative review I have ever written in my lifetime. I bought this camera for my business, set it up and everything worked. As with cameras, you never know when you'll use them. I found a need to use mine today and learned that it had not been recording the past ten days. Tech support said they didn't know what was wrong and so I had to reset it. It is no-longer eligible for return with bestbuy (I had it more that 14 days), and so I asked the manufacturer for a refund because the product cost me over $100 and I needed it to catch a thief and now that thief has gotten away as a DIRECT result of this product. They said they cannot do that.

Horrible connection and setup issues
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After having terrible troubles getting my first Flir FX connected to my wifi, I called their tech support. They tried everything to get it to connect, but after about 45 minutes on the phone with them, they deemed the camera to be defective and advised that I return it. Did that, and got the second camera to connect fairly easily to my wifi. It went offline after just a few minutes and would not reconnect. Tried everything to get reconnected. Never did reconnect. I read elsewhere that you should not update the firmware wirelessly from your phone or you will brick the camera. Apparently this is true. This is easily one of, if not THE worst piece of electronic equipment I have ever purchased. Buy anything else, but avoid this at all costs. Believe the negative reviews from around the web.

Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.camera works great, recording works great, sound in record is great....but DOES NOT HAVE 2 way audio!!! just purchased last week and called them to see why I couldn't get it to work they said it's a firmware issue and they don't know when it will be fixed.

Never got it working
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I brought this camera home after reading the reviews. Plugged it in and saw some light flashing on the top. A couple of hours later I downloaded the app and attempted to connect up the camera and that's where I came to a dead stop. I couldn't get the camera to turn on. There was no longer any lights coming from the unit and I couldn't go any further in the installation of the camera. So I tried calling this company's customer service number and After 30 minutes on hold...30 MINUTES!!!...I hung up, packed up the camera and returned it to Best Buy. If I can't reach their tech department to ask a question or get some support then I don't want their product. I actually tried calling the customer service department twice. The first time I hung up after 5 minutes. But the 2nd time I let it go for a full 30 minutes and never got to talk to a soul.

Camera is good but
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The camera quality is good and has good footage but I've had to exchange 2 cameras already. One did not work from the start. The second one worked for about 3 months and then I went to move it and now it doesn't turn on.
