The product literature and salesman led me to believe this drive would rival the iMac's internal drive. Not so. I run an older WD 3Tb USB3.0 alongside the G drive with better results. Except for speed, the G drive works perfectly and the cost per Tb is competitive.

G-Technology makes great hard drives, and this one is no different. I almost exclusively use G-Drives for professional video work, they almost always use Hitachi HGST hard drives, which are the best made, and most reliable. Couple that with the fact that they simply use the BEST chipsets for their external drive enclosures, and you have the best externals money can buy. However, they are VERY expensive. I only use these drives for critical professional work.

I am not saying H.G.S.T. drives are worthless, I am saying the housing/enclosure IS.
I had just consolidated all my last decade of pics, vids, taxes, docs, poems, everything, etc, and formatted my old drives looking to start fresh, with a clean OS install in the morning.
i go to bed....
The power connector failed and fried the H.D.D. with 1.2 TB of info OR a midnight monster (still under investigation by the ghostbusters)
In the morning I flip on the H.D.D. switch, nothing. I opened up the case to see what had happened and i saw evidence of electrical discharge on the printed circuit board.
I hooked up my drive to a data recovery software, nothing. I contacted the manufacture (g-drive), they offered to send me a new drive and referred me to a data recovery company that was very happy to charge me $500-$1500 based on the amount of data restored. They were fairly confident they would be able to recover all my data.
I decided to cut my losses and cry a few moments, then do a deep scan for deleted and formatted information on the original back up drives. Best Buy was also helpful in refunding my money but they too could only refer me to their black tie service for data recovery.
I just want to be clear, Hard Drive Manufacturers make drives, they do not help you recover what is on them!!!!
After a little research "hard drive disk failure rate 2015" i found H.G.S.T. to be one of the best drive to use and followed in last past is seagate.
I hope this review helps?
Back up your backups people.... It is a lesson i learned.

This drive is most certainly a bear and cooks transfers as you would expect. My only comment would be that it's a little loud. You can hear this thing spinning even if it's not completely quiet in the room.
Other than than, it's solid, no issues and I'm keeping it.

Used this external hard drive as a time machine back up on my mac mini 2015. I plugged in the g tech hard drive using the thunderbolt connection and the hard drive showed up immediately on my desk top. Very quick in backing up all my files. Looks very nice and has a white light on the front that illuminates. Runs fairly quiet. A little noise but nothing that is too crazy. I would recommend this product if you are looking to expand your mac's storage capabilities.
