To start, I am basing this review off first owning a Microsoft Band, then an Apple Watch with a brief trial with Microsoft Band 2, which I returned and continued to use until I got the Fenix 3. So with that in mind, the immediate thing you will notice is the battery life. Again, battery life. I could wear the Fenix 3 for a 7-10 days easy without having to charge it-and thats with using it with GPS, and getting notifications. With the Apple watch I couldn't make it a day with notifications and forget trying to monitor sleep. You would have to pick strategic times throughout the day if I wanted to monitor sleep. The fenix is just like a watch in that it's always on, no flick of the wrist-always on. which I still value. they call the devices smartWATCHES for a reason. So I know most people will probably state "But the apps on the Apple watch" and yes it does have a ton, but in reality 95% percent of them are not applicable on a daily basis once the cool factor wears off. Notifications are simple: click to read, click to delete. with the Apple watch its swipe, click trashcan, then reconfirm that you want to delete-oy vey. Now I love my Apple products, and I've been using them since the blue G3 tower-so no us against them type mentality its just that the Apple watch wants to be so much and doesn't really accomplish most at more than 75%. TL;DR. Pros: Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, Always on, looks great in direct sunlight (buy the screen protector-but then who doesn't?), GPS is great, battery life is awesome. Has controls (I just realized today how nice it is t click a button when you have gloves -it was 30s out-to control music or change screen for a run i.e. cadence, pace, heart rate. BTW I have a heart monitor (non gamin-still works) and shoe cadence thing which is cool to link up with. Also, for the guy who never likes to ask for directions it has a track back feature from where you started which is cool, so you don't get lost and you know become an extra is some horror film about lost on a trail and it gets dark and cue eerie music and crazy guy. #Aintnobodygottimetogetlost Cons: Apps are not bad but scarce, don't expect to play a miniature version of whats popular on the Apple app store. or do Mobile banking. Last thought: If you use popular apps like Strava, or others, the information can be shared on from the Garmin connect to those apps on your mobile device. So you still get the info.

I read several reviews on countless tracking watches and nothing can compare to this one. I honestly can't tell you one flaw about this watch. It tracks, swimming, hiking, running (indoor and outdoor), skiing, cycling, & etc. WORTH EVERY PENNY! Buy this one & never buy another watch.

I looked at a lot of reviews before deciding on what to get. I talked to a lot of people who had Garmin and TomTom sports watches. Garmin won out on every aspect in that area. I am still learning to use all of the bells and whistles on my watch. But, 1 of the Awesome things is that it gives me my Recovery time after a workout based on the intensity and my HR during it. Now I am a Fitness Coach and I run Spartan Races (Soon to be a Spartan SGX Coach) and I wanted it for the trail running and navigation that is in this watch. I havent been able to take it on a trail run yet but everything else is Awesome! I have only had to charge it 2x in a month (which was 1 of my concerns after some of the reviews) which definitely puts this watch over the top. Took me a minute to get used to having a Big Face watch (since I am a girl) but hey it works for me. After I do a Trail run or two and a Spartan Race (coming up in August) I will update my review to include those functions as well. I highly recommend this watch to anyone who wants or needs more data for their training to improve! (even has skiing, jumping out of planes and golf as activities to track...which I do none of those but nice to know if I change my mind they are there lol)

This is one in a long line of data and sport watches all the way back to the Timex databank, through Nike products and 2 Garmin. Running and exercise this is the best that I have found for reliability and functions. It covers a wide array of exercises and tracking. The band is long and that works well for me personally (some bands were always on the second or third last notch. This is probably due to it being designed for triathletes fitting it over a wetsuit. Take a look at the functions on Garmin from changing watch faces to compass and celestial displays. But most of all the exercise tracking with heart rate tracks (well enough for me) VO2 Max which is awesome in giving me a guideline to current level of fitness.

Gripe to Cost Ratio too High

Pros: * A ton of features * Race yourself with virtual partner * Looks nice * Appears to be accurate * Can add a chest monitor for heart rate and cadence Cons: * No touchscreen (might be a pro, depends on taste) * Buttons are stiff, repeatedly pulled my hair trying to press them. * Cost way too high to justify my issues * Only sync'd over wifi * No feedback when syncing to let me know that it was doing anything * Heavy * Can only select wifi networks by connecting it to a computer, for some reason can't select the wifi by the watch or mobile app. * Had to force it to sync to get it to sync at all. * Can be a steep learning curve with so many features. * Took longer to set up a run than to run. * No heart rate monitor included (chest add-on is $100, or Fenix 3 HR is $599) These might be minor gripes, but for a device that costs at least $499, these design issues shouldn't exist. I should have been extremely happy with my purchase, and I wasn't. I should have been able to start a run on the watch, do the run, and then when it was finished it should have sync'd automatically with the mobile app. It didn't do this. After fiddling with it, I found out I had to tell the phone to connect to wifi (it didn't do it automatically, even though I already set up the network) and then it sync'd with my mobile app. That doesn't even make sense. I ended up returning the Fenix 3 and got a VivoActive HR. I am so much happier with it and it's $250 less. tl;dr: I was extremely disappointed. The watch acted more like a $200 device, not a $500.

    Fenix 3 and nothing else

I had a Fenix 3, Sapphire edition, and returned it thinking, "man, I paid too much for this watch". Having been a user for some time of Android Wear devices I thought it a good idea to just go back to one. Purchased an Asus smartwatch. It is going back tomorrow. I ended up going back to Fenix 3. The face is always on, battery feels as if to last forever, it is rugged yet beautiful and comfortable on the wrist, it provides exceptional connections to texts, emails, and calls, and it is second to none with regard to the activity features the unit monitors - calories, steps, sleep, and when connected to a heart rate monitor it is magnificent to work with while simultaneously exercising and keeping pace with your heart rate and calories burned. The Garmin Connect app on both your phone and on your computer is beautiful and full of information to help keep you motivated and in great shape. Android Wear and an accompanying smartwatch looks pretty and it too has lots of information to offer but it is nowhere near the battery life the Fenix offers. It is still a long way off from a day when you can mentally be in peace knowing that you don't have to rush to plug it in by the end of the day. And the touch screen to me is ridiculous. If you cross your arms, your forearm will activate the screen and who knows what else. It is still impossible to see outdoors. The Fenix 3 is beautiful indoors and outdoors. And this watch is built to last, always being updated and the updates improve it each time, and I can't see myself replacing it for several years to come.
