After 1 year working fine, the first scale show the wrench icon.Bought ANT stick, tried everything, did not work. Replaced under warranty, , after 10 months working fine: wrench symbol. Warranty replaced, (third scale) arrived, tried every single tip and tricks from google, youtube etc,,, NOTHING. Returned!! wrote to Garmin support. Answer: ridiculous: see my lat e-mail and Garmin's answer and evaluate yourself the : ATTITUDE copy from last e-mail: Hello Jay and Product Support - Fitness Team from Garmin International Thanks for the answer. I was wondering: why is taking so long for an answer... I hope you solve this issue soon Returning to the Garmin products. If you check my profile, you will see how many products from garmin I have already bought all over the last 10 years, beginning with Zumo 550 in 2008. The Index scale, was a add to my wife's and my garmin sport watches, first forerunner 225 now 235. Answering your questions; 1 - I have returned the last index scale as soon as i confirm it was not working, i got it about a week . 2 - When my second index scale presented problem, i bought at Best buy an ANT stick, It did not work also. I have returned both, scale and stick. Anyway, as i "already" thrust Garmin products I bought the third index scale: Bottom line: I am disappointed.(but with some hope garmin will fix this) If you go on the forum, you will see the large amount of users with similar problems. It could not be a product with a Garmin quality I still have a gift card from Best buy, but do not intend to buy another scale, without a final and definitive solution. If you want, you can send me home the scale and the ANT stick, but I do not want to waste any time going to Best Buy to buy and return the product. It is time consuming and frustrating. If you have any other suggestion, please let me know BesT Regards Paulo GARMIN ANSWER On Jan 25, 2018, at 8:11 AM, wrote: Hello Paulo, Sorry to hear of all the trouble. I picked this scale up the day it was released. Price-wise, a little steep for what you get, I'd wait until the price drops. As far as set-up goes, if you have a Garmin ant+ USB/stick, I'd go the over the computer route rather than through the Garmin Connect app for iPhone. I did it both ways (I actually factory reset it) and found that Garmin Connect over my browser was easier and less buggy than the app (it seems like the app has been buggy since it's recent overhaul). When I setup over the app, the app wouldn't immediately sync the weight info., when I did it over my browser, it seemed to sync to the app almost immediately. Maybe Garmin's servers were slow and the app was actually fine, maybe the factory reset had something to do with it. Regardless, it worked. Just an FYI, if you want to add additional users, the must have a Garmin Connect account. Adding my wife was easy, I sent her an invite to use the scale over Garmin Connect, she accepted and had to go through the setup process which was very simple. As far as it functions, all the metrics are consistent, no wild swings in their values. I still question how it can accurately measure some of the things that they claim the scale can measure, other than weight. A good product particularly if you live in the Garmin world (activity trackers, fitness watches, cycling computers), in which I do, which was a major motivator to get it.

Expensive scale that is good only for total weight

I have been using this scale from more than 3 months now. The scale is not behaving properly for these reasons:  1. it's giving two different weights just 10 seconds apart under the same exact conditions.  It's valid to know the scale is on a leveled tile floor.  2. I bought it for to track weight and FAT% while at home on a daily basis, since I am on a doctor controlled weight loss program. I have found that I have had important changes in the FAT% and Water % measured at the doctor's office using the same impedance method (electric current through feet) but the Garmin Scale keeps those 2 percentages about 10% off not showing neither correct values or the trend my % are behaving. 3. There are variations up to 2 lbs (+10% of the total bone mass) on the Bone Mass in weeks while I lose weight. I understand it should be more steady. 4. Occasionally, it has hiccups of 10 pounds in total weight which ended up being not really and fix the next day. Please considere that I have also added to try to weight me several time with seconds apart and moving the scale of the position in the floor to make sure there is nothing that affect the reading. Please note all measurements are taken at the same time (waking up), same conditions about no food or water, before exercise, etc.  These situation made me feel I cannot trust in the indicators the scale offers by the price I am paying ($150+TAX), so I am basically wasting time and money with that info (Total Weight), since it can be provided by a way less expensive scale.

Thank you for taking time to review your Index Smart Scale. We are sorry to see that you are experiencing some inconsistencies with the data. We would recommend that you ensure that your scale software is up to date. The scale is designed to download any updates through your home's WIFI network. The device page in Garmin Connect would let you know if there are any software updates available. There can also be some differences in how two scales, using similar analysis methods, will display physiological metrics. For more information on why this may occur please use the following FAQ link: http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={b3d7c340-c5e6-11e5-e505-000000000000}&kbName=garmin. JAN 2018 review - DO NOT BUY - Scale will not work

Plagued by consistent issues with Garmin Connect. Does not work with Myfitnesspal (actually requires you to disconnect from Garmin Connect if you are currently using it) if you want advanced metrics to show. Inconsistently weighed me and was unable to know who I was even when I weigh about 100lbs more than my SO (who was unable to get more than weight/BMI to sync every day). Garmin support took up hours of my time and was no help except to blame issues with MFP or user settings. BMI was off from day to day. It was using a shorter height than my own to calculate my BMI. I could lose weight and it would say my BMI was higher than the day before. Took it back today after Garmin Connect lost my data for yesterday then the scale said I gained 10 lbs, then lost 20, then gained 10, then lost 5 all within the same few minutes stepping on and off the scale. I had to pick the scale up, move it around, then set it back down for it to show maybe a proper weight (.1 off from yesterdays weight). Check the Garmin support forums for the known issues before buying this scale and know that when calling them they told me several issues that I had and saw forum posts dating back to 2015 for were NOT "known issues". I do not believe this scale will ever be fixed.

I've been meaning to get a new scale for a while now, but I was never sure which to get. I moved to the Garmin fitness ecosystem about a year ago with a Forerunner 230 to track my runs. When I ended up with a bunch of Best Buy Rewards, I figured I finally needed a new scale, so I gave this one a shot. I've been really, really happy with this scale. It works quickly and uploads data automatically, which means I'm a lot more likely to get on the scale. I usually end up forgetting the weight I measured before I got this scale, so putting it into Garmin Connect was a pain. This scale usually has the value uploaded before I even have seen all of the measurements it took! Boy, what a lotta measurements this scale takes, too! Weight, Body Fat %, Lean Mass, Bone Mass...I'm missing a couple. It's a lot of stuff. Now, the galvanic body fat % measurements are not as accurate as professional sports labs will get. If you care that much, go to a sports lab. For me, this is good enough. My only gripe about this scale is that it shows that I put on 7 pounds when I was recovering from an injury during the holidays. Darn accuracy...

One of the requirements of a smart scale I had was WiFi. I tried to purchase a Withing/Nokia scale but it would not work as intended and wouldn't even recognize me without constantly setting it up again (and I hadn't even setup another user yet). The Garmin scale has been flawless upon setup and has never once incorrectly identified myself or my wife. I knew going in that this scale is was more limited on apps that it will interact with. I try to have Apple Health as my primary application that all apps funnel information to. It doesn't send all information over (some of that is Apple Health limitations) but it also doesn't receive information from Apple Health. Garmin wants you to live within their eco system, just like Fitbit. The Garmin Connect app works well and I haven't had any sync issues with the scale.

I had purchased this scale to get more complete information to use in conjunction with the MyFitnessPal calorie counter app. The product descriptions that I read, from both the vendor and multiple retailers, stated that the Garmin Connect app/website for this device synced with the MFP app/website. The scale works fine, and uploads to the GC site. However, even though my food/calorie intake syncs from MFP to GC, I have been unable to get the weight to sync back to MFP. I had been considering purchasing one of the Garmin activity trackers, as a companion to both the scale and MFP. Although, since MFP is my primary fitness aide, I think that will wait until they have the syncing issue figured out. For now, I will continue to use my Moto360 to track steps. It may be less accurate, but at least I already own it. If you are looking for a scale to track stats like BMI, body fat/water %, bone mass, and skeletal muscle mass, then this will deliver. And, if you are content using Garmin products exclusively, then you are probably fine. However, if you are looking to use it in conjunction with devices/software from other vendors, then you might run into issues, and should consider looking into other options.

We used a Fitbit Aria for a couple of years, but it died unexpectedly. We set out on a search for a new scale and looked at the Garmin one closely. Like many Garmin products, the firmware is a little glitchy when new hardware is released, so many of the initial reviews cited problems that have been since resolved. One of the things I like about the scale is its size. I have US 12 feet so many scales do not fit my feet. This one is perfectly sized for larger feet. Weight (and other body composition metrics) is quickly calculated and uploaded to Garmin. If you are a Garmin fitness user, you'll love that the weight is synced to watched via a smartphone. I haven't found much utility in some of the extra measurements the scale makes, but I did enjoy looking at them the first time. Perhaps these can be used for longterm trends, but time will tell on that.

The primary challenge to this device is setting the scale up for multiple users. In my experience, using the Garmin Connect App, setting up the initial user wasn't bad. I ran into issues when attempting to setup the scale for more than one user. I used the Garmin Connect App on my wife's iPhone to initially setup the scale. The process then requires that new users be "invited" by the original user to set themselves up on the scale. It took me long time to figure out how to invite new users. That's more of knock on the Garmin Connect App than the scale itself though. Once I had that figured out the process was simple. I ran into another snag when we went to add our 9 year old son however. He doesn't have a Garmin Connect account, or a phone to install the app on for that matter, therefore he can't be "invited" to add himself. In all fairness, I could probably create an account for him and just log out and back into the app as him on one of the existing phones but I haven't taken the time to mess with that. Once setup though, the scale works well, the display is bright, easy to read and gives you the information you want.

Scale woudn’t connect to the Internet

I like Garmin, so expected this to be up to their usual standard of excellence. First, it requires an ‘ANT Stick’ that must be bought separately. (BestBuy doesn’t sell these, so I bought two from GPS4US, each for half the Garmin price.) The scale talked to my computer (through the ANT Stick) but could not connect to my WLAN and connect to the Internet. (I carefully checked the password several times, uninstalled and reinstalled the relevant app, rebooted my computer, and the scale still never worked.) I returned it, and for a bit more money, bought a Withings (Nokia) scale that worked perfectly and required no additional components. I still like Garmin products. Either Garmin QC/QA needs to improve, or the scales and their packaging need to be more robust to shipping and handling problems. I assume that this failure is a one-off, but I cannot recommend it from my experience with it. I do not understand the reason a scale has to connect to the Internet anyway, but all the current ones apparently do.

Hi ThaneOfSkyrim, Thank you for taking time to review the Index Smart Scale. While the scale can be set up using an ANT stick, this is not required in order to set up this product. The Index Smart Scale could be set up using the Garmin Connect Mobile app on a smartphone. For more information and instructions for all the ways the scale can be set up please visit https://connect.garmin.com/en-US/start/index-scale/. There you will find steps for using the app, an ANT Stick, or WPS to complete the set up. There is also a lot of helpful information at www.garmin.com/support. This Garmin Index Scale is amaizing. I know I probably have a bit of body fat to get rid of, so being able to see what my body fat index actually is, is quite awesome. Not only does it show body fat, but it also shows bone mass, muscle mass, and body water. All this and I only have to stand on it for a few seconds. Setting it up was so easy, just pull it out of the box, put batteries in it, and click through the Garmin app. It initially connects through Bluetooth, but will connect through wi-fi so one doesn’t have to have their phone nearby each time it’s used. My only drawback was that it too me so long to decide to buy this scale, I should have bought it years ago. After pulling it out of the box and setting it up to find all these awesome metrics, the first thing I did was jump back online and order another one for a friend. This scale is absolutely awesome!

The scale works great. I don't know how accurate the reading are, but it is easy to read, gives additional information about body composition and was easy to set up. It works well with my Garmin APP and watch. I haven't gone online to check out any features, but wish I could put more than one name on the scale. My wife stands on the scale, and it shows up on my app. I'm sure if we bought another watch, we could separate the two, but with only one watch, I get a congratulatory message every morning at work for losing 30 pounds from the night before. The scale allows settings for up to 5 people. I just have to see how to add some without the data flowing to my phone.

My wife and I really like this scale. Having our information automatically uploaded into the Garmin Connect system is a nice feature to help with our goals. It takes the tediousness of data entry out of the equation for your app of choice (assuming it can sync with Garmin's service). I use different fitness gear and apps that synchronize with Garmin connect. Having my weight updated daily allows them to give more accurate calorie burn rates. It is a little expensive for what it does, but if you are bought-in to Garmin's suite of watches, apps, fitness gear, etc... then I think it is worth it so it get my conditional recommendation. As a standalone scale, I would probably go for something a little cheaper. The only reason it does not get 5 stars is because of the price of it, I feel like it should be more in the $90-120 range compared to other smart scales.

When my wife and I got serious about dieting and weight loss, we got a referral to a nutritionist so we could work according to her plan. The main thing about her plan was to record our weight and whatever else we could so that we could see progress. The Garmin scale does an excellent job of collecting 6-8 different measurements including weight, body fat, body mass index, etc. It then uses built-in Wi-Fi to store the info on the Garmin cloud online. The Garmin connect site and app integrate that info, for example, with my Garmin vivointeractive HR watch. So, I can track the bottom line from the scale, and integrate it with steps, heart-rate, sleep patterns and a great analysis of my sleep quality, etc. All-in-all, a great way tp track results1

I have been a Garmin fitness watch user for about 10 years, and I've always been happy with those products. I read the negative reviews for the Index, but thought I would take a chance on it based on my previous Garmin experience. The scale looks great out of the box. Set up was easy with an iPhone if you have previous experience with Garmin Connect. For three or four days, everything worked as advertised. Then, it wouldn't connect to the internet. I tried several hard resets, but was unable to get it functioning again. At the end, it became stuck in setup mode and wouldn't recover. It went back to the store less than a week after purchase.

I read plenty of reviews that sounded good about this product before purchase. I went to Best Buy and picked up the scale thinking it would be great to help track muscle mass and weight. The instructions for setup and lackluster (a single page of push here and then use the app). I could not get the scale fully logged in at all. It kept displaying the setup required screen. The system has issues transmitting to the server and it does not directly connect to your phone. This creates a serious lag out when tracking daily weights. Their support on the website was non-existent. Once I knew where to look, I found plenty of reviews stating the same types of problems. I ended up returning the scale as it would not do anywhere close to what I needed.

I have Garmin everything from Fenix 5, edge 1000 and use their app frequently. I decided to switch from Fitbit to this scale to measure my weight and various other factors. Setup was easy as long as you use the Garmin Connect app. Once you hop onto the scale it calculates your weight. BMI, bone mass and something else. I’m used to Fitbit scale telling me how much BF I have so this is new experience for me. One thing I don’t like about the scale are the plastic feet you attach to the bottom. I couldn’t get them in right and they wobble and fall off. The scale is well built and looks like it will last. If you use Garmin apps I recommend this scale.

I purchased this scale because it offered better integration in the Garmin ecosystem than similar models by other manufacturers. I have been very pleased overall with the accuracy, ease of setup and use. The only ding that I can make is on switching users. The manual says a foot tap should allow you to switch to a different user. But in practice the window that you can do this is fairly short, and if you don't tap it just right it misses the change. That said, a second or third attempt usually succeeds. In any case it is an excellent scale overall and the integration with other Garmin athletic products is a multiplier. Ditto for other third party apps such as My Fitness Pal.

I made this purchase given high reviews and most seeming please with the product. However, I was unable to connect the device to my wifi which is a must for it to function. That being said, I am not rating the functionality. Customer service was unable to devise a solution, so I began to consider returning the item. After expanding the search for a solution, I learned that this product has many issues and most without a work around. I guess those writing the reviews here were lucky enough to get one that worked. I believe Garmin makes high quality products, as i am very pleased with my fenix 3 and other garmin products. However, this scale is not among them.

I'm loving my Garmin Scale! I love that the data is transferred to my Garmin connect. It gives me the accountability and also lets me see a graph of my body weight, mass, ect. I also think it's really cool that you can add up to 15 users to use the scale. Which is pretty awesone especially if you have clients that you're helping. The only thing that took me forever to figure out is that there was no clear instructions on how to actually add different people, the instructions are vague and suprisingly there were no you tube videos either! I finally did figure it out, you have to go to your Garmin connect on your desktop to add different users.
