GPS got me lost
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The main screen of the map does not show distances. The estimated time arrival is worthless, it calculates it based on no traffic, even though there is a traffic feature. The routes calculated are sometimes different even for the same destination, and does not appear to be the fastest route. It takes you on city streets instead of freeways. It does not show street names of the upcoming streets. Garmin is not the best GPS around.

ok at first. then it was a paper weight
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.i had this barely over a year. of course out of warranty and the touch screen doesnt recognize it certain areas, so you can no longer type in an address. it is durable because it falls of the windshield all the time. so the suction cup isnt very good either. i will probably never buy a garmin again. honestly the iphone gps is easier to use then this, and would probably last longer.

Garmin charges for map updates
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My biggest gripe with this GPS is that Garmin charges $50.00 for a map update. They are very firm and adamant about that price. I think $10 would be more reasonably priced for a map update. You do get a free map update as long as you upddate it within 60 days; but future map updates will cost you at $50.00 Ridiculous. So I cannot recommend any Garmin products, especially when I have froends with GPS units from other manufacturers that offer free lifetime map updates.

Very disappointed
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have used Garmin in the past and haven't been disappointed..until I bought this one for myself. I checked reviews on this product, which were great, so I chose this one. First time I used it I took an 8 hr trip of which took me through St. Louis, Mo. As you come into St. Louis it is 6 lanes across, with 2 major exits on the rt side. It is a pretty dangerous area. I was quite sure that I was suppose to take a certain exit but the GPS told me that it was a different exit a mile up the road. Then as I passed the exit it told me to take it on the rt. Problem was I had just passed it. It did re-route me but added about 25 min to my trip, and a few more highways. Then I needed to go to a O'Reilleys to get my windshield wiper fixed, it "said" it was w/in 1 mile, so we picked it. It took up about 7 miles out of our way and NOT to a O'Reilleys it took us to some office building. On our return home we were looking for a specific big chain restraunt to go to, checked the GPS and it said there wasn't one. As we look up, there was a highway sign showing upcoming restraunts, it was on there and was only about 1-1/2 miles away. I would return this product in a heartbeat but I threw the box away because I was so sure I would love it. So to sum it up this product is worthless, and I may just buy a new one..a TomTom next time of which I was very much against when I started the process of looking for a GPS.

Fair.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this to replace my (stolen) 1.5 year old gps (not Garmin). I found out that Garmin (or atleast this 255WT model) didn't have (minor) features that my old gps has. Features like "least use of freeways" and be able to input new location/address while moving (passenger should be able to do it) without going to "safe mode(?)". It kept on freezing (when it recalculates)! That was it for me, after 2.5 days in my car, I returned it and went with the old brand.

Do not buy this product
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I drove to AZ from CA and mounted a Tom Tom 3rd edition and this Garmin. By a mile Tom Tom was faster at calculating the directions. Garmin keeps reminding you that it's calculating when you stray (annoying) and I could not turn this feature off. The settings in Garmin are very few compared to TomTom. To change the volume Garmin takes 3 steps in and 3 steps out, TomTom is 2. This is a big deal when you're 80mph. Customization of Start screen and shutdown screen, TomTom offered MANY options, Garmin has VERY few and NOT userfriendly at all. I wanted to put the BMW logo on Garmin and I couldn't and changing the GPS voice was HARD. Garmini is way behind on website and software development. I can control my TomTom using my PC, Garmin - NO! I also noticed that TomTom was more precise with the maps..ie..when there's a curve, Garmin does not show it precisely. The view of the horizon is also more 3D in TomTom, while Garmin is a little flatter. I can go on with how much I hate Garmin compared to TomTom. Finally, I dropped my brother off and on my drive 50 miles home Garmin dies! It could not resolve the satelite connection until 30 miles later. TomTom was working the whole time. Next morning, Garmin dies again on my way to the bookstore and I had to turn the thing on. As I said, I can go on....but no Garmin for me ever!
