The Nuvi 255wt is the unit I purchased. Some functions are a little hard to figure out but over time I'm sure I will. The manuel with the unit was for a 205. I called the Co. about this & was told all units in that series were alike. I don't believe this to be true as I have run up on things not covered. Also, some points & addresses, not new sts, do not appear. I don't know if the unit is an older model but, if so , I wasn't informed so at the time of purchase. Other than these drawbacks the unit seems to perform as presented.

This is a great buy and has many great features. It also locates a signal much faster than my old Garmin, which was my only complaint and reason for buying a new one. So far very pleased with its performance.

I absolutely love the garmin nuvi! It's easy to use and handle! It has a built in safety feature which recommends you to not use it while driving but will let you over-ride if you need to which is handy!

I've been using this GPS for a few weeks now and enjoy the bright display which adjusts to day/night automatically. It's easy to understand with just a few minutes of tinkering to learn all the features.

    Could Be Better

This is my first GPS and I liked it at first. I bought it at the Cyber Monday sale price which seemed like a really good deal at the time But, the more I use it, the less I like it. The one free map download and install process took hours, even with a high speed (12MB) connection. It is not easy to zoom in and out and see an overall view of the route it has calculated for you. Sometimes it shows sidestreet names and sometimes it doesn't. Searching for Points of Interest is very frustrating. It can be extremely slow and I have already found many examples of well-established locations that it can't find and are not in the list. When using it on routes I already know, it can make some strange decisions. One day, when I was within a quarter mile of my office, it routed me almost 2 miles out of the way, trying to have me turn right when my office was on the left. I live in a major city and I still haven't gotten any benefit from the traffic feature. I can't even tell whether it works or not. My one experience with customer service was good. The lady I spoke to was very nice and answered my questions. The unit is lightweight and starts up quickly. It occasionally has trouble locating satellites in cloudy weather. Bottom line, I still don't trust it and can't tell if it is going to prove to be helpful in the long run. I don't know whether that will change as I use it more on trips or in locations where I am not already familiar with the best routes. I know this for sure though, I would not buy this model again if I was buying for the first time.

We had thought about a GPS system before, but just didn't know. We love the unit. We can't beleive the exactness of it. not only knowing exact location but also, showing landmarks on the system as well.

Got it on the Black Friday sale -- great product! Got it set up after registering on the Garmin site. I haven't played around with all the features yet, but I hope to use this for travel in the future.

Old Old maps! come on, Garmin should allow at least one time upgrade when you buy the unit to current maps. Otherwise a great GPS!

I recently bought 255wt gps and used for my Boston to Toronto trip. This unit works very well in general . The only problem that was the traffic updates. The traffic symbol pops up wherever the FM transmitter available. According to the manual, the color of the symbol changes base on the traffic conditions, but this was not true. The symbol stayed green the whole time. It does not matter the traffic is heavy or no traffic at all. Any one who purchased this unit experience this problem please post your comment up!!

This is a great GPS for the price. With text to speech, widescreen, and lifetime traffic, this unit was a great value. I have been using it for a month and sofar I have not encountered any problems.

I received this as a birthday present to replace the one that was stolen out of my car. I think this is a great device and comes in handy when you are not sure what direction you should be going in.

    Good overall, but weak documentation

We had a nuvi 205 before, but it finally died so we upgraded to the 255WT. Very satisfied with the GPS function, however the FM "traffic alert" has never signalled us to watch for traffic (in Houston!). I don't see anyway to check that it is functioning. Disappointed in the documentation that came with it. It didn't explain the traffic alert feature at all, and there is an icon on the screen that I can't discover the significance of....not covered in the documentation and also can't find info on-line.

we live in a rural area and on our first time testing our garmin it wanted us to go 40 miles out of our way to use the freeway. reason- The device can only be set to use lowest mileage route or fastest time route. Though description of garmin nuvi255wt says that it displays speed limits for roads - we've found so far that it only has speed limits for freeways and about a third of highways. When their is no known speed limit for a road it wont consider it for a faster route - therefor only routing us to the freeway 40 miles away. Also, while looking for points interest(restaurants, stores etc) it did not have information or was not able to find many stores that we knew were there. I went to best buy to find out what to do and they said I needed to buy the maps download. The maps download to update information was $119.99. So basically you have to spend $150 + on the device, then before it can actually be used you have spend another $120... Not what i was planning on... The device will probably work fine if you only drive in older areas where theres been no recent construction and your not worried about finding specific stores or restaurants.... Not pleased!!!

    Great Unit

This is a great unit for the price, it has everything you really need without spending a fortune. One suggestion, before writing reviews, please update the OS sofware, voices and maps (you get 1 free map update within 60 days if you register) before you say silly things like you got an old unit when you ordered online. Just make sure you have a mini USB cable handy. Also make sure your area is covered by the traffic service. Only the largest 100 or so metro areas are covered. Here is the website for the FM service they use: http://totaltraffic.com/

    Disappointed

Traveled from AZ to LA. Didn't matter if in the desert or LA area, unit would freeze up. If I was driving alone, would have no direction at all, as you can't play w/it while driving. Partner was able to get it going, but this would happen over and over again. If you change your routing, it would come back with alternate directions quickly. BUT, many times it was cutting in/out, like a cell phone out of range. Yet this happened at any time...in deserted areas or the large city. No rhyme or reason to this. No buildings around, or w/buildings around. Sometimes it worked in tunnels, sometimes it didn't. Bad part was, when it did give directions, if cutting in/out, you'd only hear part of the directions. Good thing it repeats itself as you approach, but several times, even that cut in/out and again, not next to any bldgs. Was mostly in outskirts of LA area, like Anaheim or at beaches. I have friends/relatives w/older models that work fine...they just get to a clearer area and it reboots itself. This one didn't. Stayed frozen for well over 15 minutes (was testing it) and until you reset it yourself, wouldn't work. Once it was turned back on, it resumed same route vocally, even before you got back to the map page. The traffic feature was accurate only 1/2 the time..no voice to rely on, if you are solo in the car. You have to touch the red car screen area to find out...how do you play w/this while driving alone???? Only once did a voice come on as an alert for traffic up ahead, but then it was too late to do anything about it. If not for partner, would have been lost many times. Had to rely on paper maps as well, as the whole route would never display w/out playing with this...again, impossible to do while driving alone. Can't recommend this to friends, as they are single and this would not help them.

Worth Every Penny I Paid For It

We are directionally challenged. We recently went to the Navy Pier in Chicago. I programed in the address, sat back and enjoyed the trip. The "lady" led us directly to the entry to the pier. Later I typed in the address of the restaurant we were looking for. It took us right to the front door. No problems at all. This is not the first trip we've taken with her, but it is the first time for this particular spot. Other venues were repeat visits. The only thing I find difficult is the keyboard. Why oh why can't it be normal? Takes me f-o-r-e-v-e-r to type in an address. I am a grandmother. I bought the GPS for me for Father's Day (single parent). It is worth every penny I paid for it.
