    For the advanced user

I bought this because I advanced in my workouts and needed something that could track better. Although it does great tracking I returned it because I hated the screen indoors its very dark and the colors are not vibrant as advertised. I went with a fitbit and I prefer brightness over a dark display. The only time it will be bright it during sunlight outside as the screen is refelctive.

    The screen is horrible

For a $250 device, it's inexcusible to release a product with a screen that isn't even on par with a budget fitness tracker. The backlight doesn't work even on the brightest setting. When the backlight is on, the bleed on the screen is so bad it washes everything out. I am returning it to the store. Best Buy does not have a display so I couldn't try before I buy. Going back to my Polar M400.

I am a person that buys workout gear in order to motivate me to workout, and in almost all cases it does not work. The Garmin watch, however, has done just that!

This watch provides so much data that it helps keep me motivated to move around more. It offers quite a few options to customize the screens to fit your needs.

Good activity tracker, smartwatch, not so much.

I've been using this activity tracker primarily for triathlon training. The GPS for running and biking are pretty solid. The swim function is pretty inaccurate though. I often get so in the zone during my swim workouts that I lose track of how many laps I've done- I was hoping this would take care of that problem. It frequently adds or doesn't count laps. Its operating system is a little clunky too- the touch screen isn't super responsive.

    Great when it works

This is my second Vivoactive HR. The first one locked up on day one. Garmin couldn't figure out what was wrong so I brought it back. Exchange was easy peasy. The second one worked for a week and a half before the screen flashed and then died altogether. Thought perhaps the charge was out (I saw it was at 80% an hour earlier) so I hooked it up to the charging unit. Three hours later.... wait for it.... No change. Still dead. Have an email in to Garmin and can't wait to work this through. I am a soccer official and love this watch when it works. I find the GPS accuracy to be great and it picks up a satellite or two in a matter of seconds. I can see where I moved on the field and it helps me to correct my game and positioning. There are a couple of things that don't really work well on it like the sleep tracking feature. I have awaken several times during the night, took the dogs for a walk, went to the can etc... the watch lists it as a sound sleep with nothing but normal heart rates. I am fairly sure I was awake but perhaps it was a bad dream and the dogs walked themselves. Overall I love the watch when it works but with two problem watches right off the bat I am not sure about their quality assurance program. Maybe third time will be the charm.

This Item Is Not All It Is Cracked Up To Be

I was really looking forward to getting my Vivoactive HR. Unfortunately I have been very disappointed with it. The floor climbing feature does not work correctly. It rarely records when I climb from one floor to another in my house. I do this multiple times a day and the vivoactive usually states I have climbed 0 floors. The sleep monitor feature also does not work correctly. When I'm reading before falling asleep, it is recorded as light sleep. When I'm up in the middle of the night moving around with a migraine or reading, it is recorded as light sleep. It also doesn't record the number of times that I wake up correctly. I've been unable to take a walk outside to calibrate the step function but I'm not having high hopes for that to be correct either. It was advertised that the vivoactive would fit my wrist size and it doesn't. I'm very small boned and have thin wrists. The computer part of the item doesn't fit the curved part of my wrist and sticks out on the sides. I have to strap it on tight to make sure it doesn't shift and this is very uncomfortable.

Hello Gigi, Thank you for taking time to post a review of the vívoactive HR. We wanted to take an opportunity to address some to the concerns that you mention. The first is the floors climbed feature of the device. If you are not seeing accurate floors climbed reported on the device, please use the following FAQ link for more information and troubleshooting recommendations: https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-US/faq/content/LJ6vYF2phv7JUAOlsRRjC8. The vívoactive HR will use the Automatic Sleep Detection feature of Garmin Connect to display how much movement is detected by the device at night. The normal sleep times can be set in Garmin Connect, and if the incorrect sleep times are not automatically detected in Garmin Connect, users can edit the sleep times to reflect the correct sleep and wake times. Thanks again for your review. -JFH Garmin

    Step count off

Had this watch for a few days not imprressed at all. I'm only getting to read text messages that are 4 or more words. I'm not getting incoming call notifications which is upsetting. Step count is way off. It said that I took over 300 steps in the shower! I was expecting to be able to answer calls on the watch but I guess that's to much for a $250 watch.

    BUY THE PROTECTION PLAN

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've been through 3 of these in the past 10 months. Each time I have had to exchange the watch due to water damage (even though the thing is rated to a depth well below my usual 3 to 6 ft). If you choose to buy this product or any product claiming to be water proof then be sure to BUY THE PROTECTION PLAN because it has saved me over $500 so far. The watch itself is just that, a watch. It can track activities, the step counter picks up every bump and shake of the leg, and on my trip in Jamaica I was in a bumpy car ride in the mountains and it thought I was climbing stairs at an Olympic rate. I rely on it for nothing more than notifications from my phone, finding my phone, the silent alarm, and telling me the time.

Loved the watch when it worked. Great battery life. Unfortunately the screen cracked very easily and Garmin will not cover that under the warranty. Owned for 6 months. Back to fitbit I guess...

Good idea but not a good watch.

I had it for a week before it broke. I liked all the aspects of the watch, the heart rate monitor was fairly accurate, the everyday fitness tracker piece was handy, the band was a little large for my small wrist but I used it for 7 days and then it froze. At the end of my run (5th time using the exercise function) it stopped working. I let it sit overnight thinking it may have overheated (it was hot) and then did a hard reset in the morning. The screen went back online but was reading the wrong date and time so clearly it was a software issue. My suggestion would be to not buy this as it doesn't work.

A true water resistant watch!! My only complaint is there is not weight lifting app where it counts reps, rest between sets, and other weight lifting data on top of the GPS not working just after 2 weeks :(. When working solid lol.

solid performance tracking - NOT WATER RESISTANT

I bought this from BestBuy in Evanston Illinois a couple of months ago to track my swim activity especially that the device is rated for 50 meters. On a recent swim, it died and I'm in the process of getting it replaced with a refurbished unit from Garmin. On their website, they state that they follow some standard for water depth and that at the end of the day, 1 meter of depth is as far as this device can handle. Only children swim at that depth. My arm as I turn at the end of the pool will end up 1 meter deep. This device should not be listed as water resistant and should not be used for swimming. It's false advertising.

Hello ChiTriAthlete, Thank you for your review of the vivoactive HR. We are sorry to see that you experienced a water ingress issue. We would expect that your device would withstand being submerged in the pool at a depth greater than one meter. The 5ATM water rating indicated that the device is designed to withstand the water pressure at 50 meters below the surface. Since the device has this rating it is deisgned to be used to in the pool. We are glad to see that you are in the process of exchanging your device. Thank you again for your reivew. -JFH Garmin

    A plastic waste of time

I workout practically every day. I am not a runner. Many of these watches/sport activity trackers sadly place A LOT of emphasis on running. I primarily lift weights and do a lot of cardio on an upright bike. I have tried the Fenix 3, Fenix 3 HR, and now the Vivoactive HR. All are overly priced and often times inaccurate, and a ridiculous challenge to deal with. The first full day of having the Vivoactive HR I had to contact technical because I was getting 2 of every notification. They could not figure it out. Trying to use it without a separate heart rate monitor seemed somewhat accurate at first. Today, I had to use a heart rate monitor because the unit alone was nowhere near as accurate as it was the first time I used it. The back button does not always work. Both buttons at times seem slow to react. The touch screen does not always react to it being touched. The unit is lightweight, but feels terribly plastic. To the point where you feel as if you need to be super careful to not bump into anything. The screen is HIGHLY susceptible to scratches. Here is my bottom line take. I keep going back to my Pebble Time Steel. I have an account with an online activity tracking software company. I wear a MIO link heart rate monitor on my other wrist. I activate the online software program I have the subscription with, it comes up on the Pebbles screen (HR, calories burned, and time of workout), and it works EVERY time. I than finish my workout and I track all my data online. NEVER AN ISSUE. And the Pebble works FLAWLESSLY EVERY TIME!!! WAY less expensive and WAY less frustrating than what you will undoubtedly found yourself going through with the Vivoactive HR.
