Another grand slam release from Sony/ Columbia; the premiere studio in 4K mastering. As usual, I didn’t even have to read a review of this disc to know that it would be the best Gattaca has ever looked. A great, thought-provoking movie with rich, glossy cinematography looks as sharp as ever. The steelbook is well designed, with a really rich, bronze sheen that gives it good presence on one’s shelf. If you’re a fan of Andrew Niccol’s Gattaca, then this is must own.

A real sci-fi movie, which is rare. With a message about the capability of the human animal to adapt. A dystopian future where everything you are is summed up by your DNA. The human race is finally moving out into the solar system and you have to have perfect genes to go, which is a ridiculous standard. You want a real science fiction story, give this one a try

Gattaca was made using Super 35 mm film. So the 4K treatment here isn't as stunning as something that was recorded digitally or on 70 mm film. However, what they've done here is excellent and retains all the characteristics of film, boosting the contrast and colors, as well as being faithful to the director's vision.

A Genius Movie, Way Ahead Of It's Time

When I first watched this movie, a little over 23 years ago, I had sever misgivings to both the logic and philosophy behind it. Frankly, I was annoyed by it. Don't get me wrong... I liked the movie, enjoyed it immensely... it fascinated me in a hundred different ways, but it challenged my perception of the future as I imagined it. But, I just couldn't swallow the idea that natural born humans would be second class citizens, while genetically altered humans were spearheading humanity's future, it effected me profoundly. Like I said, it challenged my preferred perception of the future. And then... just a couple months after seeing Gattaca in theaters for the first time, I watched The Fifth Element, which also came out that year in December. Laden with a few book acquisitions from a neighboring used book store and sucking on Venti Coffee Frappuccino, I watched The Fifth Element with my friends at a cozy, somewhat classical and intimate movie theater. And... I had loved The Fifth Element, adored it, it fit perfectly with my vision of the future. I know! The Fifth Element was cheesy and corny, but it was also intense, stylized, and vibrant in its vision. This is where the debate began; the laying out of imaginative constructs, the petty arguing, the late night Denny's discussions, the ultra geeked-out dissections of every cinematic nuance that fired up our imaginations. The movies were very different from one another, true. The Fifth Element was a throbbing, cultural assault on a distant future that both comforted and entertained us, while Gattaca was an austere slap down for a socially sever and very near possible future. These movies to this very day still hold value, if you are willing to give them the time. I keep both The Fifth Element and Gattaca right next to each other on the shelf filled with future inspired Sci-Fi like Ready Player One, Demolition Man, and Elysium. Gattaca is worth every penny, especially for a 4K steelbook edition. It has become a cult favorite amongst geeks!

Great sci-fi film. Spoiler alert… it is a 25+ year old movie… as a bonus… Gore Vidal is the villain.

I have not seen Gattaca in over 20 years. It used to be shown on HBO or Showtime when it was new back in the late 1990s. Perhaps it has been forgotten. After seeing it, I forgot how good it was. Much better than I remember. The movie takes place in a future where your DNA determines where you are placed in society. The main character is a imposer, using another's DNA to avoid discrimination and live out their dream of going to outer space. As expected, the 4K transfer looks good.

Andrew Niccol's cautionary tale Gattaca imagines a bleak future where one's life is fated from birth, but the story never really puts the ethics of scientific progress to task or fully embraces the darkly bitter tragedy of its conceit. Nevertheless, thanks to the excellent performances, strong characters and gorgeous stage design, the sci-fi drama remains a beloved favorite after twenty years. Coming from a fresh remaster, the dystopian sci-fi vision worms its way to Ultra HD with a beautiful 4K HDR10 video and an excellent Dolby Atmos soundtrack, a genetically superior presentation over its HD brethren. Porting over the same set of supplements from its Blu-ray predecessor, the overall UHD package is recommended.

Only Way To Get Gattaca on 4K Is The Steel Way!

There’s only one way to get Gattaca on 4K disc and that’s with the inflated price of a steelbook, but it’s so worth it. The story still holds up and the 4K video is clean, pristine and the audio ain’t too shabby either. Just don’t expect an action blockbuster surround track, but Gattaca ain’t that...it’s a slow burn. The steelbook design is pretty, but mine did have a slight dent under the paper on the back.

‘Gattaca’ is futuristic but not too “SCI-FI”. It’s definitely different and the pacing is slow/steady. The Blu-ray already looked fantastic. Colors on HDR are supposed to be more accurate (and they are). But if you already own (and like) the Blu-ray, I would wait to upgrade at a low price or sale. Not because it isn’t worth it (that’s your call), but I somewhat frequently have seen this release on sale. Steelbook is also offered, but you’ll have to check it out to see if you like the artwork and color (brown-toned).

One of the Best Films of the 1990s

One of the absolute best, and inexplicably ignored, dramas of the 1990s. Its measured yet stylish direction and layered, grounded performances transcend its sci-fi premise to examine the moral and emotional dilemmas that go hand in hand with the unstoppable progress of technology. It’s not hard to imagine that, had Hitchcock written a script that was directed by Kubrick, this might have been the result.

Excellent transfer and very noticeable upgrade over the blu-ray. Lots of film grain, which is exactly as it should be. Sony continues to do justice to it's titles on this format. The movie's reputation itself precedes it: a smart, deliberate sci-fi noir. Can't go wrong on this one.

I have owned this movie on DVD since 2004. Classic movie, it was only right I made this purchase. Picture quality looks great on the 4K UHD television. Sound quality was equally impressive, so good in fact I was able to distinctively hear Mya Rudolph’s voice and I never knew she was in the movie. This movie was ahead of its time, because the tech is coming to fruition.

I was a so-so fan of this movie at first, but later understanding the movie in depth made me realize what an intriguing and important film this is, in it's social commentary and visual presentation. This movie literally makes you root for the underdog. The 4k transfer looks fabulous. It looks more natural and realistic. It is just pleasant movie to look at period.

This underrated, entertaining, and thought provoking film from the late 90s features strong performances by Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, and Jude Law. The troubling futuristic world is different than our own, but just close enough to be believable. The new 4K transfer is gorgeous—filmic and textured. The steel book packaging is handsome. Great purchase.

Gattaca is a highly perceptive, intelligent science fiction film that may be destined for cult classic status. Its themes and messages still speak to us almost 25 years later and deserves its reputation among the science fiction classics of the 90s such as The Matrix, Dark City, The Thirteenth Floor and others.

A gorgeous steelbook indeed for this great new 4K UHD release of a classic sci-if film. Don’t hesitate to add this one to your collection, especially if you’re a big fan of the film! The pq/aq is superb, it made me feel like I was watching the film for the first time after all these years, I highly recommend this new 4K UHD transfer.
