Number 6, out of 7 total, shade setting yields a light/medium color. I can use #3 and run it twice to achieve the same result. It is a handsome machine and very easy to use. Just seems silly to have that many settings with half of them not usable to me.

Single-piece brushed stainless steel around the sides (with a seam in the back). Shiny chrome-plated top surfaces. The push-lever handle and "Shade" knob are chromed plastic, but that's what you should expect at this price point. From experience with many other toasters, this one takes about as long as I would expect to toast a slice of bread. The result is a somewhat non-uniform shade, a little darker at the bottom, but not a deal-breaker. I'm pleased that the sides do not get finger-burning hot after having gone through a toasting cycle.
