During a recent heatwave, and prior to our large apartment complex switching on the buildings air conditioning, we got this bad boy. Living on the fourteenth floor during an out of nowhere 92 degree heatwave meant having to deal with apartment temps reaching over 90 degrees, it was unbearable. Enter this air conditioner. Now, we have a 1200 sq. Ft. Apartment, so it didn’t cool the whole place down, but it cooled whatever room it needed to be in. We were able to sleep and get the air temp down to 70. We could roll it in, because the easy maneuverability, and watch TV. It would cool the room off relatively quickly. Overall great purchase here!

This GE A/C works well. I haven't set up the Wifi yet but this portable A/C cools my 350 sq ft living room off the way it’s supposed to on a hot day. I don't have to empty a bucket of water each day which makes me happy. At the time of purchase, I didn't understand why the GE 11,000 BTU was almost $140 more than the GE 10,000 BTU which made no sense. To boot the BB workers couldn't explain it to me either... It was hot that day and I needed an A/C so I had to buy it. So far I'm happy with the purchase but not thrilled with paying $140 more for just 1000 BTUs more. Thanks.

Its a life saver that cools. It's easily set up and really cools the air. Our a/c has been out (issues with central air) and this little unit has been a life saver. It cools quickly and easily. There was supposed to be a remote (spouse think so, I didn't see it) but it doesn't matter. We use a window unit in the living room and this one in the dining area of an open space with high ceilings. You really notice the difference when its been turned off for cleaning (unfortunately I believe we have some mold). So it's very cost effective and much cheaper than the central a/c but we lose areas (plus I get very ill when the temperature fluctuates below or above 70° Fahrenheit. It has definitely saved my life not to mention tempermit. The credit was easy to use despite the annual charge. All in all it was a great buy. I love it. It's our second summer with it. Works great!

The unit is small an compact for a portable ac unit. It has great performance and cools my living room and kitcken in my condo. However i dingged it 1 point because its slightly loud. But it is on par with other units in terms of decible rating. I recommend this to anyone whos looking for a simple portable ac unit with wifi capability

Our main air conditioner stopped working in our fifth wheel during a heat wave. We purchased this air conditioner, vented it out a window and it has kept our 400 square foot rv cool! We are exceptionally pleased with our purchase and are so grateful for this little machine that has saved our summer. It is very quiet, which surprised us, as well.

This is the best console unit we’ve had in twelve years and it didn’t break the bank. We’re on our third brutal summer with this beast and she doesn’t disappoint. Quiet and great that we can position it based on whether we need to direct cool air to the kitchen or elsewhere. It has an easy to use remote and console panel.

I live in northern part of California, 209 area where it becomes 90-+100 sunmer time. Thank God I purchased this right before the heatwave. Once I get home from work it is about 78 degrees inside my studio 550 sq ft. I turn this bad boy on right away, I jump in the shower after I am done the whole living room is nice and cool. It is a pretty penny when I bought this, to me it is definitely worth it because I hate the heat. I honestly would rate this 9/10 just cause I use a tornado fan in front so the cool air spreads out evenly

In the 3 or 4 months of Summer in the Northeast, you can't do without a good A/C. Most homes have central air which is great, but you usually have that room in the house that doesn't get cool enough or, in my case, the newly enclosed porch that has no central venting. The options are to get an unsightly window unit, a mini-split system, or this portable, free standing GE unit that quickly and easily rolls away when you don't need it. As long as you're not taking it up and down flights of stairs, you should be fine. I like how easy it is to connect the one exhaust tube to a window; with the included bracket and extenders, allows it to be connected either horizontally or vertically from 20" wide using the main piece, 29" with a second piece, 38" with the third piece, and up to 44" fully extended and secured. It comes with a foam strip to ensure the exhaust fits the window without air gaps. It also has predrilled holes presumably for having a more permanent mounting. I find that a 2" wide strip of duct tape works just fine. This being a smart a/c comes with wifi that connects to GE's SmartHQ app. It requires first connecting to the unit's own wifi network (timer button pressed for 3 seconds to enable) then asks which home network, I automatically chose the 2.4ghz since all smart devices require it, took maybe 3 minutes and done. The app allows you to turn the unit on from wherever you are, set the mode, temp, and fan speed. It also comes with a remote with its own screen and in addition to the app's features allows you to set a timer and oscillate the air flow. When turned on, you notice the noise of the fan, even on low setting. Fortunately, when the condenser kicks, there is no notable difference in sound making this comparatively quiet to previous models. The differential of ambient air tested at 70F to conditioned air at 44F shows considerable cooling ability. Being an a/c, it can dehumidify as well to the tune of over 8 gallons per day. Granted the tiny 1 quart built-in reservoir will not handle it which is why GE has added a bypass drain plug to which you can screw in a tube and connect it to a larger tank or floor drain. Otherwise, you can empty a full reservoir into a very shallow pan by opening the lower drain plug. I don't see it filling up too fast since it has an auto-evaporation feature which should keep you from having to empty it that often. I gave it 4 stars because it's a powerful, easy to setup and take down unit with the added convenience of app connectivity allowing it to be turned on before you get home. I took off a star because it's currently too expensive and a tad more noisy than I expected. If you can find it on sale, it's a worthy purchase considering it's 450sft room capacity.

With few fundamental changes to the concept of air conditioning over the last several decades, portable air conditioners are arguably one of the major advancements in the field in quite some time. Perfect for parts of the house where a window air conditioner or extending the HVAC system doesn’t make sense, portable ACs help bring seasonal cooling capabilities to anywhere with a small window opening and a couple square feet of floor space can be spared. General Electric, once among the largest American appliance manufacturers and today a subsidiary of Haier Group, brings connected functionality to their latest 11,000 BTU portable air conditioning offering, promising (but ultimately failing to deliver) smart home integration with this convenient cooling solution. The GE 450 Sq. Ft. 11,000 BTU Smart Portable Air Conditioner delivers great performance but falls short on price and a few quality-of-life features. - Unboxing & Setup This GE portable air conditioner comes fully assembled with little more to do than to position it and install the exhaust vent bracket in your window. The unit sits on casters that makes sliding the unit from room to room easy on hard floors or low-pile carpets. At about 60 pounds it still needs quite a bit of strength to carry it between floors, but its smaller size and molded grab handles make this doable with some effort. I certainly wouldn’t want to carry it up or down the stairs often - if you have storage space on the same floor it’s probably the better idea to leave it there in the off season. The mounting hardware supports both traditional and casement style windows with a minimum opening of 5” x 20”, so it should support most any house. Sadly, the instructions to install the window bracket are too sparse and GE does not include screws to mount the bracket to your window, so setup will require a little pre-planning and perhaps drilling. You will want to screw the bracket into the window as well - the weight of the exhaust hose pulls the bracket out of the window cavity easily. Once installed the flexible hose is about 5 feet fully extended, leaving positioning limited to within a couple feet of the window. Setting up the exhaust vent is the longest part of the process. Once plugged in and powered on it can get right to work cooling or dehumidifying using the included remote, or set up to use GE’s Smart HQ app for Android and iOS. The WiFi chip inside the air conditioner only seems to read older 2.4GHz networks, however - if you’re running a modern 5GHz network you’ll need to set another one up in your router to support. - Cooling Performance & Noise Portable air conditioners work and vent their heat differently from window mounted units. The excess heat is not as easily vented, so the machine will be working against some radiant heat released into the room. Thus, the Department of Energy requires a Seasonally-Adjusted Cooling Capacity (DOE SACC) rating alongside the raw BTU rating - while this GE 450 Sq. Ft. Smart Portable Air Conditioner is rated at 11,000 BTU in absolute, the 7,850 BTU DOE SACC rating indicates this unit performs similarly to an 8,000 BTU window-mounted unit, and thus is best suited for medium-sized rooms. I have this portable AC set up in the top floor of a townhouse, where my central air conditioning struggles to deliver cool air up the three storeys in the summer months even with register boosters. The floor measures about 350 square feet, and the GE 450 Sq. Ft. portable air conditioner does an excellent job cooling the room. While my testing so far has been limited due to an unusually cool spring, I did manage to heat the room to about 75 F and started the aircon in its max cooling mode. After just a couple minutes the room felt noticeably cooler, and the temperature as measured on the opposite side of the room had dropped firmly below 70 in less than 10 minutes. Achieving the same effect with the house’s central air takes almost half an hour, again from the sheer distance of the HVAC vents making the house fan less effective, so this is a welcome result. In addition to the expected cooling and fan-only modes, this portable AC can also function as a dehumidifier, offering up to 45 pints per day of dehumidification. I haven’t been able to test this feature as the weather is not particularly humid recently, but seeing as humidity in the top floor has been an issue in previous summers, I’m excited by the prospect of further reducing electricity use by simply dehumidifying the room in what would be otherwise comfortable temperatures. Compared to other portable air conditioners I’ve seen and used, this GE unit sits somewhere near the average for noise output. The fan is certainly the loudest part of its operation, forcing an incredible amount of air through its fixed top vent, and even with the compressor running the noise is never unbearable. It may be an issue if you’re sitting close by and trying to have a conversation, but the aircon won’t make you reach for the headphones if you’re more than a few feet away. I’ve used other portable air conditioners in this performance class that are quieter, but are also much larger and heavier. - Smart Features & Maintenance GE’s Smart HQ app provides the basis for remote control and home automation. It walks you through setup with some processes that take an oddly long time to synchronize, and it requires you to create a GE Appliances account to use. Once past these hurdles the Smart HQ app allows full control of the air conditioner remotely, including power on/off, mirroring all the same controls you’ll find on the included remote. Basic functionality includes temperature setting and auto-shutoff timers. I was excited to hook the AC into my Google Home setup, but unfortunately neither the Google nor Alexa integrations featured in the Smart Home app apply to GE’s range of air conditioners, portable units like this one included. Pretty disappointed. Only two things need regular maintenance on the portable aircon - the air filter and the condensation tank. The air filter is easily accessible from a latched panel on the rear and should be vacuumed regularly to remove dust, and washed occasionally. The condensation tank will fill every now and then when using the air conditioner mode - once filled, the display will read “FL” and the aircon will only operate in fan mode until the tank is drained. The quart-size tank inside the unit can be drained using the lower plug near the floor. If you use the dehumidifier mode the condensation tank will fill very rapidly (most dedicated dehumidifiers have water buckets measured in gallons of capacity, not a single quart), and as such it’s recommended to use the continuous drain mode by connecting a regular garden hose to the top plug, bypassing the interior tank entirely to instead empty to a low sink or floor drain. - Bottom Line The GE 450 Sq. Ft. Smart Portable Air Conditioner is a great solution for rooms that can’t be as easily served by window air conditioners. Its performance is plenty strong, though its touted smart features are very basic. With the lack of digital assistant integration, cost is absolutely where this GE air conditioner needs improvement and keeps it from earning a top review score. At an MSRP of $599, this 11,000 BTU portable air conditioner is one of the most expensive in its class when comparing at similar cooling capacity - a premium that simply isn’t justified by a remote control app enabled only by an outdated wifi chip and a mediocre app. It simply doesn’t do enough to command the significant price premium.

I've used this portable AC for two summers. No issues other than it's a little loud at times. Cools with no problem and I love that I can easily move it to a different room if needed. I would recommend this AC if you don't want a window AC and like the option to move it easily to anther room.
