Brothers until the End…Sweet Sweet End (Gears of W
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have been a fan of the Gears of War series since the beginning. It actually was one of the reasons I purchased a XBOX 360. At the time I was waiting for Splinter Cell Double Agent to come out and was on the fence between upgrading my computer to play it or getting a gaming system. However, Microsoft and Ubisoft stated that the next game after Double Agent (the game that eventually became Splinter Cell Conviction) would be console exclusive to the XBOX 360. Then I started seeing gameplay for Gears of War and I was sold on the system. While initially the game was supposed to be released in the Spring of 2010, Epic Games, the producers of the series decided to delay the launch to polish the game more. However, over the course of the following months since the announcement was made, the marketing campaign offered the tagline “Brothers till the end…” It was really targeting everyone to talk about how this was the end of the trilogy. Gameplay: If you have not played Gears of War prior to this game, the story may be a little lost to you as well as some of the gameplay mechanics but the game’s pop up tutorials are some of the best and allow for a quick pick up of the gaming mechanics. Each time you pick up a weapon or interact with something for the first time, a tutorial will pop up in the corner to talk about what you are doing and how to do it. However, having played the series before, I really found it an ease to pick up. Also, the game is a traditional third person cover shooter. This means you have the over the shoulder view of your player character and you can find cover and hide behind it. Like its predecessor and most other shooters today, health is regenerated over time. If you don’t take cover and still get shot up or hit, you will die. It does a good job of keeping you moving because cover can be destroyed. Throughout the game the gear you can pick up has changed. New Weapons litter the battlefield including a different lancer and shotgun. The Retro Lancer works like the Lancer Rifle but you with a bayonet instead of a chainsaw and while the standard shotgun (Gnasher) still exists but players get a chance to experience the sawed off version of it. Several new heavy weapons also litter the landscape. A new sniper rifle with a one shot kill called the “One Shot” (pretty self-explanatory) and a two new mini-gun turrets. Overall, the greatest new battlefield experience to grace the game is the addition of the Silverback, a mech like armored weapon system. The weapons are much more balanced than in previous games and they are much more defined, it really allows for an enjoyable experience. A new gameplay feature if the ability to level up while playing solo in the campaign. Multiplayer in previous Gears of War outings allows for you to level up at all times but now you can do it while playing by yourself. Of course you can co-op with up to four friends now as well. Multiplayer has a new mode called Beast mode where players get the chance to act aas the locust attacking human strongholds. It is a very fun mode and I greatly enjoyed playing it. Having not played Horde mode in Gears of War 2, I tried it for the first time in Gears 3 and it is a lot of fun. It’s a great experience and I really enjoy the game mode. Overall, the game feels refined and by far the best outing of the series. I believe that the extra time they took to polish the game really shines. It gives a chance for people to unlock new skins for their weapons and player character. I enjoy this more than rewarding people with new powerful weapons like the Call of Duty or Battlefield series that gives people with more time to play the game as opposed to those playing more casually. Story: One of the most powerful stories I have seen in a video game. It has all the great elements of a fantastic movie but keeps them spread apart. Subtle comments lead to giant changes. While some players who have not played the game series before, may not exactly understand the initial story. However, the game does a great job explaining what is happening and how the people of Sera have got to where they are during this game. The story is well done and matches that of a Hollywood blockbuster. Fans of the series or new players will find the story to be an emotional and powerful story that ends the series well. I don’t want to give away a lot but there are times you sit watching a cinematic and you can’t say anything. You just stare at the screen at what just happened and feel for the characters as they move along in the story. Voice acting is great and honest. The script really worked out well as the lines, while intermingled with curse words, provides humor, sadness, anger and compassion. Throughout the game you feel as if you are part of the action because the story brings you in. My only issue with the story is there are several unanswered questions from the previous games. I really enjoyed the story and had hoped that more of the previous hints and small comments that generated questions would be answered. I hope that in the DLC that is coming out, more and more of the questions from the previous games will be answered. Presentation: The game is beautiful. Traveling through the dunes of the Seran desert or the tropics and beaches of Sera, you find yourself immerse in the scenery. Its gorgeous and others who don’t play games can notice it. Morgan, my Fiancé, watched the game and really enjoyed it. Her reaction was that it was a great action paced game that was beautiful to watch. She would often look up and watch the game as I played. She doesn’t often find the games I play to be enjoyable or fun to watch. Overall: Overall, this is one of the greatest game I have played in a long time. The story continues the mythos that is generated from the first games. This game shows how to close out a group of characters and to effectively finish a trilogy of games. With its beautiful presentation, new gameplay features and improvement on previous games, this is how game companies need to remember their games should be done. My hats off to the Epic games and everyone who worked on Gears of War 3. Thank you for making an amazing game. For anyone who owns a XBOX 360 this game is a definitive purchase as the gameplay and story are some of the best I have ever seen.
