Blu ray is the worst I have ever seen. I have seen many regular dvds that were better than this blu ray. The 4k ultra Hd blu-Ray is stunning. Sharp images.

    Roman Gladiator Epic

Ancient Rome is thriving. After General Maximus leads the Roman legions to victory in their final battle against the Germanic tribes, he longs for nothing more than to return to his wife, son and farm in Spain. But Emperor Marcus Aurelius has other plans. Knowing that Maximus holds the utmost loyalty to him and to Rome—and not trusting his own son and heir apparent, Commodus—the aging emperor asks Maximus to succeed him on the throne. The depraved Commodus gets wind of this and arranges for Maximus to disappear—permanently. Maximus escapes his assassins but winds up as a slave to Proximo, a trainer of gladiators. The general, who becomes a slave forced to fight to entertain the man who tried to have him murdered, plots revenge. Positive Elements: Maximus is a man of honor and is incorruptible. He turns down an opportunity for power and riches because it violates the principles for which he stands. He tells the decadent Commodus, “What we do in life echoes into eternity.” He tells a scheming Lucilla, “I never acquired your comfort for lying.” Three gladiators form a bond of friendship and self-sacrifice to help each other. And, in a back-door way of affirming what is good, the evil Commodus gets his comeuppance in the end.

Finally, they have released a version that captures the movie's amazing visuals as they should be. The 4K HDR format allows for the colors to come through as intended. Vibrant without being artificial. My player doesn't currently support Dolby Vision, but the HDR10 format was fantastic. And my Sony A1E OLED avoided issues with "banding" (or "artificial contouring") that I've had in the past with Blu-Ray and DVD copies on other sets. I'll need to try my standard Blu-Ray copy to see if the banding goes away because of the TV or the format of the movie. The sound was also fantastic. I did not play it on a system capable of handling the overhead sound. But what I got was incredibly engaging, and better balanced with the dialogue than I recall from other copies. I've watched this film many times, but never since the first time I saw it has it been so engaging. My heart was actually beating pretty fast a number of times when viewing this copy tonight! I don't know if it was the improved visuals or the sound that made it so incredibly visceral this time out. Whatever it was, they've clearly finally addressed all the complaints over the years from reviewers saying they took a lazy approach with previous versions. This one seems really cleaned up, as if a lot of time and attention was given. But that's only fitting for such a popular film, and one so meticulously crafted.

Gladiator stands as one of the finest movies of its generation. It richly deserved the many Oscars that it received. Russell Crowe's performance is superb. The writing is crisp and the action sequences are what the story demands. The Dolby Vision and HDR-10 images are not quite up there with the very best 4K UHD releases but they do improve on the already excellent re-issued Blu-ray. Details are clearer and the overall tone is more natural. The Dolby Vision image is a bit brighter than the HDR-10 version but if your setup can only do HDR-10 you won't be disappointed. The sound track (DTS:X Master) is big and bold as it should be. Dialogue over the center channel is very clear. If you're a fan of Gladiator and have a TV capable of showing 4K HDR and/or Dolby Vision movies, this is a must buy.

This is a review for gladiator steelbook edition 20th anniversary. It's hard to believe this movie came out 20 years ago. Yet it's probably one of the best made action movies since then. But that's just my opinion. If you look at the whole story line the story itself is very well done the acting is incredible. How could you not root for Maximus being at his family was executed by a man who had just killed his father. of course meaning person that killed his father was Commodus killing Marcus Aurelius. I know if I was a maximus's place to I would not trust, Des for killing his own father. Then executing Maximus's familythat would have drove me off the deep end just as well wanting revenge just like him.it became what would have been then known as one of the best gladiators of all time the ending is very sad but well-fitting from movie of this caliber.being at this is the 20th anniversary and I put it out on steelbook this is a must have anybody who is a fan of the movie. Ridley Scott is a great director, and Russell Crow as Maximus was meant to be.

Vibrant without being artificial. My player doesn't currently support Dolby Vision, but the HDR10 format was fantastic. Whatever they did to remaster this to match a Blu-ray/ 1080p look is nothing short of incredible. Some of the scenes do show some jitter between the foreground (not in focus) and the main stage (example- at the Colosseum) but those distractions are minor and the rest is very well presented. Having always watched the Extended version (previous DVD standard format), I opted to watch this disc on the Theatrical version (20 minutes shorter) and I found there were scenes not in the extended version or not the same. A great movie that always entertains.

Gladiator has been one of my all time favorite movies, especially since watching in the theater so many years ago. Fast forward now, to the advent of 4K UHD upgrades, this movie has never looked so good. I was continually impressed by the movie quality, as it only enhanced the movie further. It looks like the minor could have been made yesterday. Movie 5/5 Sound 5/5 ( DTS:X) Picture 5/5* *(there was a tiny bit of grain, but it was acceptable for a minor of this caliber).

Gladiator remains an exhilarating example of epic storytelling grounded in a very personal narrative. Touching on themes of revenge and loss and friendship and political corruption, the movie is as captivating to me as it was in May of 2000. Though its Blu-ray release history proved controversial, I'm elated to say Gladiator has never looked or sounded better. This 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray boasts the film's defining home video presentation, thanks to a 4K scan of the original materials and Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range. It's not perfect, but it's one of the best catalog titles the format has ever seen. Plus, you get a roaring DTS:X sound mix that demands to be played as loud as you can manage. If you're a 4K enthusiast with DTS:X capabilities AND a Gladiator fan, RUN-don't-walk to snag this one. Highly Recommended.

In the final days of Marcus Aurelius' reign, the aging emperor angers his son Commodus by making it known that he wants Maximus, a fearsome and respected Roman general, to be his successor. Power-hungry Commodus kills his father and orders the death of Maximus. But the latter flees, only to discover that his wife and child have been murdered by Commodus. Captured, Maximus is forced into slavery, where he is sold to Proximo, a former gladiator who serves as both mentor and slavemaster. Maximus trains as a gladiator in the arena, where his fame grows. He goes to Rome, intent on avenging the murder of his wife and son by killing the new emperor Commodus. Maximus has learned that the one power stronger than that of the emperor is the will of the people, and he knows he can only attain his revenge by becoming the greatest hero in all the empire.

Combined with the recent Braveheart release comes this Gladiator 20th Anniversary 4K steelbook release. This film has been well-reviewed at this point, so I will quickly express my thoughts on the presentation itself and it is fantastic! The interior is interesting with a shot of the Tigris of Gaul scene, and it captures one of the best moments in the film. I am pleasantly surprised the US received such an excellent steelbook. Keep them coming, Best Buy!

There are many 4K UHD discs on the market today...but are they worthy of the hardware you just spent for a 4K or even an 8k setup? This Disc is reference quality and worth every penny to be in your collection. It is on many top ten lists of discs to purchase..and a “must have”-to be in your collection... sure you could stream it...but you will lose clarity...people who understand “lossless audio” and “uncompressed video” will understand. Bottom line- Great disc, then ask yourself...”Are you not Entertained?”...

Ridley Scott & Russell Crowe's best film winner

One of Ridley Scott's top films portraying Roman culture. Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix shine as superstars from their characters, earning Russell Crowe a best actor win and gaining the best film Oscar. Joaquin's ability to show mental and emtional turmoil here hints at his future Oscar win for his portrayal of the Joker. Connie Nielson also shows off her motherly charm, years later becoming an action star herself as Wonder Woman's mom and still looking incredible more than a decade later!

I remember watching Gladiator in the theater back in 2000, in what I believe was the 70MM format. The film blew me away with the sound, acting, and beautiful cinematography. When I bought the DVD, I thought it was reference. When it came to Blu-ray, I thought the transfers were lacking in that they had a red hue and "enhancements" that made everything look worse. I'm happy to say that the 4K version fixes these issues with a new native 4K transfer l, Dolby Vision HDR, and DTS X soundtrack. It looks and sounds better than it ever could, even in a toptier theater back in 2000. If you love the movie, buy it. It also includes the extended edition in true 4K.

Gladiator was made to be an epic crowd pleaser and those who remember seeing it in the theater will remember not only the bloody gladiator death matches but also all the sweeping emotions of Maximus' journey of revenge and ultimately redemption. The 4K version with DTS-X lossless surround literally brings the theatrical experience to your home. So basically with 4K tvs becoming cheaper and the standard way to go along with soundbars that really deliver you need to add this movie to your library to get the most out of your home theater.
