I've been using previous generation Nest thermostats for over 5 years and love the control and data that I get about my home heating and cooling. I was excited to compare the latest generation to the Nest Learning Thermostat. There are a lot of great new features and iterations that make this the best smart thermostat that you can buy. Nest made the biggest change every to their now iconic design, mounting a frisbee on pedestal: I don't love the new look but I do like the large screen and minimal bezel. There is a host of new "farsight" options so you can customize the details you see at a glance as you walk. I do wish it allowed for a little more customization, but picking one of four faces in really nice. I also like that it comes out of the box with a temperature sensor. The gen 2 temperature sensor seems pretty similar in functionality (I couldn't find any difference) to the original, but in a more rounded and overall aesthetically pleasing shape. The update I really like is that I can set the thermostat to regulate temperature based on an average of my sensors and the temp at the thermostat (in any configuration of multiple sensors including or excluding the sensor). One week of use is not nearly enough to really gauge just how much "smarter" it is, especially when it was nice enough to be off all but one day of that week. My initial tour is that there are a lot of great features and functionality: I wish that they had stuck to a more conventional Nest Thermostat look instead of the big departure, but its worth the trade off.

I recently upgraded to the 4th Generation Google Nest Learning Thermostat. Coming from the earlier generation learning thermostat, I was pleasantly surprised with the new look.
The installation was straightforward, just like previous generations. The package includes everything you need, including a remote temperature sensor, and the Nest app walks you through the entire process. I’m no HVAC wizard, but I had it up and running in about 20 minutes. Switching the wires over was a breeze. You won’t be able to use a previous generation base, so plan on removing everything down to the wires. Wires and holes lined up and compatibility wasn’t an issue. The app even checks your system compatibility before you start, which is a nice touch.
The build quality of the new Nest thermostat is unsurprisingly top-notch. It feels solid and premium, with a beautiful glass display that’s both modern and durable. The display is larger than previous generations, but it’s still compact and looks amazing. The materials used are high-quality, and it feels built to last.
Overall, the 4th Generation Google Nest Learning Thermostat is a fantastic upgrade. For me, it’s worth the price, especially considering the advanced features, premium build quality, and sleek design. If you’re looking to make your home smarter and potentially more energy-efficient, this thermostat is a must-have.

With the busy lives that we lead it's nice to have a smart thermostat that can adjust to your schedule. This one not only looks cool but so far seems to function well. If you're an Android user this will integrate well into your Google home ecosystem. One thing about it is that you can control everything from your phone from schedules to geofence so that it cools your house when you want it to or when it senses you are close.
With a geofence enabled it's nice from a cost savings perspective if you're going to be away from home it will adjust the settings to raise the temperature so you're not cooling the home while you are not in it. It also has a motion sensor so it notices when you walk by or when you make adjustments it learns your patterns. Total time for installation and configuration was probably for me about 30 minutes.
Having said that the installation was not as simple or as easy as I anticipated. Out of the box the instructions were very vague and I wish it had come with a bit more information in the quick setup manual. Knowing what I know now I would have done the following instead of the way I did set it up.
- Plug in the thermostat via USB-C to power it on
- Open Google home to begin the setup process by adding the device
- Scan the QR code on the back of the device to enable it and then walk through the configuration via the Google home app
- Then mount it to the wall
I made the mistake of actually installing it and attaching it to the wall before I had written down the six-digit code on the back or taking a picture of the QR code. If you do that first then you can plug it in to power it on and complete the configuration.
After a week's worth of use I do like the aesthetics of the thermostat as well as the ability to make any adjustments via the Google home app. The cost savings aren't know just yet but I know that there are various eco modes that will reduce usage to save money and it will provide feedback via the app.
I also like that it does come with the additional sensor which I have placed in one of the rooms in my home that tends to get the warmest so that it will regulate temperatures based off of the additional sensor.
Does an incredible Job…But an eyesore on the wall.

I had a Nest Gen 3 that I loved, It looked great and worked like a champ. BUT, I love new tech and I saw that the Nest Gen 4 came with a temp sensor which I was already wanting for the hot spots and cold spots in my house. So after a little debate, Nest Gen 4…Here I come.
I got it and was pretty excited. The marketing looks so sleek and cool. I opened it up and the screen in a lot bigger! It kinda of has a toadstool look to it it the small base and the oversized head. Hum…. Got it out and looked over the parts. The first thing that struck me was the huge screen of the Nest, the second was how cheap and ugly the base trim was. It’s a flat off-white almost chalk colored. I had to use the trim plate because the homebuilder out in a cheap dumb AC box and damaged the wall with screw holes that I did not need when I got my Gen 3 a couple years ago. Anyway, I thought maybe it will look better on my wall….No. More on that in a sec.
So I was looking for a “scan me first” QR code or something. It came with a basic 1.2.3 step of install, download the app ect. I was still kinda of lost. It is true, I don’t read instructions very often but how hard can it be to install this. I did the Gen 3 already. Turns out it is not hard especially if you have a previous version and know where all the wires plug in. The PROBLEM is google does not do a great job with the starting point. A simple scan me first on the outside of the box would be awesome. That way you could do it at the store even to see what if anything you might need for the install. I had mine installed when I scanned the QR code on the back of the Nest 4th gen and saw the step by step. I should have done that first, but I got side tracked by the lame attempt at a step 1.2.3. generic step by step. They took what should have been a pretty easy setup and made it confusing by not giving a “dummy” version of “START HERE.” I will take some blame. Maybe It’s just me….But I will tell you I have a lot of complicated tech and I run through all of it just fine. I would have been better at not looking at any of the stuff they said and just did what I did with my Gen 3.
Once I got it all installed (which again was easy once I gave up on their instructions) It synced right up and hit the wifi and BOOM done. It is very smart. I didn’t have to re-enter my wifi password ect. It was just online in seconds. LOVE THAT. Then I stepped back…and just could not believe how ugly it looked on my wall… I mean I kept trying to trick myself with how much I love Google stuff (my whole house is googled up) and that it will grow on me and that it’s just new and different…lies. With the base trim plate, It is ugly. The base is so dull and not flush against the wall and out of place. No fengshui, no flow…just ugly. I stared at the screen…maybe that big old screen can make it look better…no. The problem with the screen is it has an iridescent tint to it. It reflects every bit of light it can and that makes it hard to read. To be fair I have a bright hallway which doesn’t help. I also miss the bright red and bright blue when it heats and cools. The marketing shows this on the Gen 4 but it is barely noticeable compared to the gen 3. I absolutely hated the way it looked on the wall. I was at a crossroads where I almost took it off and put back my gen 3. My partner said to give it time to see how it worked before going nuke.
I went to the app…Guess what…The old beautiful and simple stand-alone NEST app…done. The gen 4 completely integrates into the google Home app. That’s fine and I am well versed in the google home app but like I said I have a million things in the google home app. It gets lost in the cacophony of cameras and lights. I favorited it in the home page but I still have to go to my Google folder on my phone, then to my google home app then I can change the setting or look at stats. It was so much easier and functional to have a stand a lone app for it. I understand why Google wants it all incorporated into home. But as the customer…It’s about WHAT I WANT…not what google wants me to have! Like all tech changes…I will just get used to it. Plus with the convenience of just telling google assistant to turn down the air it’s not a big deal. And to be fair, with the smart learning, now that I think about it…I really never opened the app that much. So maybe Google does know better…
So it was all set up, I can customize the display a little in the home app…you can make the face a clock or show the weather…Kinda of cool. I also like that the display shows the humidity and outside temp.. that’s nice. I still think it’s ugly though.
Now what to do with the sensor? That was the main reason for the upgrade in the first place. Set up was a little tricky. You have to do it through the home app…add a sensor…then scan it. I had to do that three times before it actually worked. A lot of back end stuff has to happen on google home side and it felt buggy but worked. IF you scan the unit first (as I should have done) at the end it will help you set up the sensor, so you don’t have to go through the home app according to the tutorial that I did not watch cause I was unsure where to start.
Got the sensor working and then you have to select the sensor in the home app to send and adjust temp based on the sensor. It takes the average temp and helps even out the hot and cold rooms. You can add up to 6 sensors and prioritize a room for the right temp when you sleep ect. Pretty cool and useful.
So what to do with the ugly plate trim. I pulled it all off and fixed the drywall holes form the original thermos stat box and painted it let it dry and then reinstalled the Gen 4 directly onto the wall with no plate. It looks a lot better. I still think it is ugly and harder to read the face but it doesn’t scream cheap and hideous as loud now. In fact it’s growing on me a little.
I would say if you have a gen 3, I would keep it…If you have a gen 3 you know that google is for sure phasing out the old nest app. It has not worked great for a couple of years now so maybe hang on till the nest gen 5 is out…maybe it will look better? Who knows. If you have no choice and it’s time to buy a new thermostat…NEST is the only game in town. It is truly amazing tech overall. I absolutely love how well it keeps my house cool and keeps me informed about what’s going on with my HVAC zero complaints about what it does…It’s the aesthetics, app integration and install ambiguity that diminished this experience. So how and what to rate it? Initially I was going to give it a 3, but feel like that is unfair because it does it job like a rock star and maybe you think it looks gorgeous….I can’t stomach a 5 though…That ugly ugly base trim plate and the drywall repair to get rid of it…Gonna settle with a 4 which feels a bit high but a 3 is for sure to low.

Intelligent thermostat that saves money

As we all know in this day and age of out-of-control inflation, high gas and grocery prices amongst most other things, stuff isn’t cheap; especially not energy costs. In my opinion, investing in things that have been proven to cut costs and stop bleeding money out every orifice is a no-brainer. Energy is unequivocally one of those necessary things in today’s technology laden world. That’s why, in our 4k square foot, two story house with an ADU and three thermostats, having smart thermostats you can adjust and monitor remotely while encompassing local weather conditions, occupancy, etc. has always been a priority upgrade since we bought our house about a year ago.
We already had Google Nest thermostats on two of our three existing thermostats and were in the market for the last one when the latest 4th generation one was recently released. One of the things that caught my attention with the new model was that it comes with a separate temperature sensor to monitor a separate area within the same heating/cooling zone. We always had one area that was a different temperature because the thermostat is located in our master bedroom therefore the thermostat had no idea the other area was approximately 2-3 hotter or cooler compared to what the reading was. Having the additional and separate temperature sensor allows the Nest to adjust the temperature accordingly to ensure all areas in that zone are covered and not just the area the thermostat is installed.
Regarding the installation, it was fairly simple since we do own a newer home however the new Google Nest tried to cover all options with this model’s wiring schematics and will easily walk you through the installation process through the Google Home application on your smart device. Specifically, mine only needed four wires to connect and I was up and running after one software update and quickly syncing the new thermostat to my account. I selected the room where the thermostat would be installed as well as the room where the separate temperature sensor was being placed. One thing I had to get used to was the screen itself which is aesthetically futuristic looking however is very glossy and concave which is very reflective of light and can be hard to see at times when windows and lights are in the room. Other than that, the large, borderless screen is very responsive and provides most, if not all, features and adjustments directly on the screen versus having to pull your phone out. I also like being able to rotate the dial to adjust the temperature versus a side touch panel, like on their other models, which has its own learning curve.
After installation, the Google Home app walked me through money saving suggestions and tips including learning my routines and syncing my other Google devices to the account so, using my location and phone, it knew when I was home or away. Some other useful features are the System Health Monitor that can sense and alert you of many issues before they become bigger problem, Energy Shift from Nest Renew which can automatically shift energy use to cheaper times and ensuring your system isn’t running while outside temperatures are better that what you have thermostat set to all of which will save you money. One feature I’m surprised wasn’t included on the Nest Thermostat was a built-in microphone for voice controls which I thought would be convenient if I wanted to adjust the temperature while lying in bed without having to get my phone out. However, you can still use other voice-controlled devices, such as speakers and phones, to access the Google Assistant and make those adjustments.
There is much more technology built in to the latest 4th generation Nest learning thermostat compared to its predecessor and other less-costly models however, after using it for several days, I would suggest at least having one of the learning thermostats in your home or office just to take advantage of what the software can do. Ultimately, all of these features have been proven to save you money, paying for itself in a relatively short amount of time, and would definitely recommend it in today’s economic downturn and whatever happens in the future.

Needed to replace an earlier generation Nest thermostat. Since I already have several other Nest/Google devices, this was my first choice. I am very happy with the update. The replacement install took literally less than 10 minutes. Setup was very simple as all I had to do was connect to wireless and it was pretty much done. That being because I was replacing an earlier gen of the same device.
Feature set is really very good. I usually leave it on heat/cool all year round. Took a couple of weeks for the "learning" part to kick in but once it started to get my routine down it does really well. Don't have to adjust it which was the point to begin with. Works well with the Google home app. Sets itself to Eco mode when it senses no one is home.
Looks are fantastic. Great design without being too busy. No complaints. I would recommend this to someone.
Thrilled you’re enjoying your upgrade, jasvanek. Thanks for the five stars!

Google - Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) with Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) - Polished Silver
The Google - Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) rounded 2.7-inch LCD screen is 60% bigger than the previous (3rd) generation's display. The larger screen view changes when you are up close and expands when you are further away, allowing you to see your customized info at a glance. The display has a new Dynamic Farsight feature with a customized home screen to easily view the time, temperature, weather, or outdoor air quality. This new screen, which is larger, allows the Dynamic Farsight feature to pop. Like previous models, you can use the stainless steel edge surrounding the thermostat to adjust and dial in your temperatures. A new 12-terminal backplate greatly expands its compatibility with most HVAC systems. If your house is equipped with a separate ventilation system, it works to help save energy when it senses that outside air changes that can work with your comfort settings and considers air quality.
Installation was straightforward and easy to do. I have been a Nest user since Gen 2, so I am already familiar with the process. They give you a metal plate, a large oval trim plate, screws, and a Sensor. They also include a strip of wire tags. You scan a QR code to give you step-by-step instructions, and the unit is good at testing and giving feedback during the installation process.
As noted, the unit now comes with a (2nd gen) remote sensor. This can be used to create routines to help adjust the temperature to the sensor rather than the one in the thermostat. Additional remote thermostats can be purchased separately, and the unit can be programmed to choose different sensors at different times or to adjust to their average as you customize your thermostat's routine. It would be a nice addition if the remote sensors had occupancy detectors like the main unit. That would give additional flexibility to adjust a room's temperature only if it senses someone there.
You can not use the original Nest app with this revision. You have to switch to the Google Home App. Though there are certain features, like dealing with the entire week at a time on the Nest app, that the Home app doesn’t have, the Home app has a lot more settings and features, though the organization doesn’t seem to be as clear. This of course could be because I am so used to using the Nest app.
One thing I always appreciated about the smart home thermostat is the ability to switch to a more energy-efficient temperature when you are away from home and then switch to your normal setting when you get into the GeoFencing range. Most of the time, I will have it switch over to home mode when I am twenty minutes away just for my own family's comfort. The Google Home app can be shared with other members of the family and will take advantage of everyone's presence or be aware when everyone is away and then act accordingly.
The Gen 4 unit is advertised as having improved AI that helps adjust the thermostat to keep you comfortable by learning patterns and monitoring your system's health and indoor and outdoor conditions. I can see it adjusting things like the fan and trying different temperature settings while it learns, but it does take some time, and I have only been using this for a week. The AI is supposed to be smart enough to analyze how the weather outdoors will affect the temperature inside and adjust accordingly.
Smart Schedule looks at pattern changes and makes frequent micro-adjustments in different situations, such as coming home early instead of your regular schedule. It will give you energy-saving suggestions that can be implemented automatically or you can accept or reject them in the APP.
The Thermostat and the App are Matter-Compatible, allowing you to control them from other smart home apps and devices. They also provide advice about other sensors, such as window sensors, reminding you to close or open them to conserve energy. I could not test or utilize this feature because my home automation is Z-Wave, not Matter units.
One additional feature that I have always appreciated is the System Health Monitor. This tracks the HVAC performance over time. It can sense issues of failure to cool or heat a space in adequate time and send you recommendations or urgent alerts for problems that may require immediate attention.
I like the upgraded thermostat and look forward to the adjustments the AI will make. I also like that I can use this unit with my electrical company to participate in a discount to adjust my usage during a time that would benefit in decreasing the load at peak times during the summer months.

Should you buy this?
YES:
if you want a newer styling, If you want a larger display with futuristic appearance, and no large bezel occupying a lot of the face. If you are willing to pay a premium over prior models, for the addition of an included remote temperature sensor (previously available only as an accessory at additional cost) and the potential of Google AI rolling out improvements over the years for more features and capacities. If you have a robust system, with heating/cooling/ventilation and perhaps newer products such as heat pumps and devices that are triggered by external air quality or humidity.
NO:
If you already own an earlier generation Nest thermostat, and are pleased with its performance. There are no major new functionalities or features with this new generation, which is the first upgrade since 2015.
A thermostat is pretty much a one trick pony, but there are nuances.
If you prefer the classic Nest app. This generation requires the use of Google Home app for remote control of the thermostat. If you have older Nest products, you might be using two apps to control virtually identical products. However, voice control through a Google speaker/hub will control both equally well.
Thinking back over my years of using Nest Learning Thermostats, first with Gen 1 and then upgrading to Gen 3 about 3 years ago, once we set the daily settings for desired temperatures through the days of the week and times we were home versus at work, we really didn't change the settings much at all.
Honestly the only adjustment I would make would be occasionally to turn on the “Eco” mode. You would manually activate Eco mode either at home or via the Nest app from afar. This mode would drop your heat to a pre-chosen minimum temperature. For example, going on vacation, we would turn the heat down to 52 degrees. After spending a week away, upon our return, I would use my mobile phone to cancel Eco, as we landed at the airport. Then upon arriving home, it had warmed up from the energy-saving lower temp that it had been for the time while away.
The Gen 4 Learning Thermostat appears to be more style than substance in its changes. Certainly the new device has a much sleeker, almost futuristic appearance; it seems to float off the wall. The gold tone is quite modern and goes well with the drawer and cabinet pulls in the kitchen where the thermostat is mounted. The display is larger, having lost the 1 cm bezel around the display edge. The packaging was nicely conceived without any plastic; all recyclable.
The Gen 4, like many recent Google hardware products, has incorporated Matter into its hardware. So theoretically it can be voice controlled by not just Google devices, but also Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, Samsung’s Smart Things devices, etc.
Installation was quite easy; it took about 10 minutes. Having a Gen 3, the holes in the wall were already in place. The backplate was a different shape, so some paint touch up of the wall will be needed. The mounting plate screwed to the wall is a smaller size and has 2 additional wires, so you cannot just click the Gen 4 onto a Gen 3 wall plate. But the screw holes were identically spaced, so no new holes needed to be drilled. Quoting the Google web page here, the 2 extra ports on the mounting plate are needed “to work with humidifier, dehumidifier, and ventilation systems - expanding compatibility. If you have a ventilation system, you can use Smart Ventilation, which helps bring in air if temperatures are mild and outdoor air quality is healthy. If outdoor air quality is unhealthy, the system will pause bringing in outdoor air”.
Our home does not have integral humidifier/dehumidifier or a separate ventilation system. We use the ancient method of opening some windows. The basement has a separate dehumidifier, quite necessary in New England basements in the summer to keep the musty mold in check.
The Nest Thermostat is capable of handling a broad array of different heating/cooling systems, which you select through the set up process in the app. Our simple system is winter heat only, via natural gas. No GeoThermal or heat pumps to integrate. Since I am writing this in August, we are months away from actually turning the Nest thermostat on.
For control and management via your cell phone, the Gen 4 does not use the Nest app, and must be activated by the Google Home app. So now, with one Gen 3 and one Gen 4, I have to use separate apps to control the devices individually.
To add the thermostat to the GH app, you use the + sign to add a device. Then you are presented with 3 choices: 1) a Matter-enabled device, 2) a Google Nest device, or 3) a “Works with Google Home” device. I was in a bit of quandary as to whether I should choose choice 1 or 2, as both were true about the thermostat. It seems either choice could work, and I chose NOT to set it up as a Matter device, not just yet.
Adding the thermostat to Apple’s HomeKit app, as a Matter compliant device, was quite easy. This could well have been related to the fact that I am a user of the Starling Hub, which is a wonderful enabler of Nest products for use in an Apple centric home.
Now I can control both thermostats with Siri, using voice via your device of choice: Home Pod, iPhone, AppleWatch, or Macintosh computer.
The Matter enabled choices in the Apple HomeKit app, however, seem somewhat limited: turn the heat or A/C on/off, set a temperature, control the use of the remote temp sensor (see below), and that’s about it. So not a robust skill set, but really all the major fundamentals.
Indoor humidity, ventilation systems, and scheduling are not available via the Matter control on HomeKit; so for fine tuning you need the Google Home app.
Google states that Gemini AI will learn your heating/cooling preferences and make automatic fine tuning of the settings to optimize your comfort, lessen your energy usage and therefore utility costs, and integrate your presence in the home to know when you are home and when the home is vacant. So no more manual setting of the Eco mode; the AI knows when you are not home.
Your presence is determined by motion sensors is various Google/Nest products: smoke alarms, motion detection in Home Hub Max, in home surveillance cameras with motion detectors, etc. Once the system notes that no one is home, Eco mode automatically switches on, rather than it being something the owner needs to activate. Similarly it switches off from Eco when you return (although returning to a cold house).
All the prior thermostats were billed as Learning Thermostat with the sole exception of the introduction of the Google Nest Thermostat (notice the absence of the word Learning).
The learning capacity really served as a functional AI algorithm, and is built into 23 years of Nest Learning Thermostat’s history.
Perhaps there will be new, more robust features as AI unfolds. But the history of the Nest Thermostat has been really that the features that exist when you buy it, are all you should expect for as long as you own it. There is not a previous heritage of firmware updates or system upgrades of installed devices being rolled out to owners.
In checking my installed Gen 3 Nest thermostat, it was last updated May 2022, 2 years 3 months ago. By my recollection that was about when I bought it. So no software updates, firmware changes, or new features added in that time.
I have not had any personal experience with other brands of smart thermostats, so cannot speak to deficiencies or benefits of one brand over another. I would direct such concerns to reviews from third party sources.
With this unit, you can choose between different faces that appear upon close proximity to the device, so called Near Sight: time display, a clock face, current weather outside, or reading of indoor temp and humidity. Again style tweaks, but not a major function improvement.
The other new hardware, included in the box, is the Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen). It is essentially the same as the 1st gen, just redesigned to better match the Gen 4’s appearance. It looks like a smoothed stone found on the beach, and can be hung from the wall or placed onto a shelf or piece of furniture. Its primary job is to feed a remote room's temperature to the thermostat for altering the house's heat depending on which room you tend to be in during that time of the day. Of course, given the zones your heating system has, it cannot control one room separately from an adjacent room, you just get to select which room is calling the shots at which time.
Google/Nest also has an optional program called Nest Renew; to support customers who are concerned about climate change and the role of home heating/cooling in the deteriorating climate. I signed up for that program when it rolled out about a year or two ago.
As stated in the Google web page: “Once you enroll in Nest Renew, your thermostat can automatically make small adjustments that shift energy use to cleaner and less expensive times. These adjustments are small but add up — contributing to a more reliable and efficient energy grid while lowering household energy bills at the same time.” I check in the web page of nestrenew.google.com regularly and it gives me a local feed as to whether I should hold off on running the dishwasher (for example) right now, and instead run it later when the electricity generation is less utilizing fossil fuels.
So in summary, it is a time tested, reliable product. It is not the cheapest smart thermostat, and most of the functions are available in models from other manufacturers. But the styling is striking, and the promise of future updates and features from Gemini AI integration are tantalizing, but cannot be guaranteed to develop.
Giving your home the perfect upgrade, JeffreyP! Thanks for sharing with us.

Google-Nest has released their newest thermostat for 2024 after initially releasing their first smart thermostat back in 2011. Google-Nest really set the bar with their design and the intuitiveness of their app. Since then, many other manufacturers were able to gain popularity. Fast forward to now, it looks like Google has primed the Nest 4th Gen to take back the crown. Testing all the features couldn’t have come at a better time as I just replaced by whole ac system. I wanted to see if it would be worth the upgrade from the 3rd gen Nest thermostat.
Design
First of all, the new Nest 4th gen thermostat is a pleasure to look at. My kids have caught me staring in awe of the elegant design of the device. I’ve owned the 1st and 3rd gen of the Nest learning thermostat, and this is by far my favorite. It’s still pretty early as I have not had the device long enough to test for all the bugs and shortcoming just yet. I’ve had two brand new 3rd gen Nest thermostats fail on me, so I may be best suited to review the newest entry with the years of experience I’ve had with the Nest thermostat.
Hardware and install
I was able to use the existing screws and the existing placement of my 3rd gen Nest Thermostat. I was able to remove the existing and setup within 15 minutes. I love the fact that I was able to connect to Wi-Fi by using my phone instead of manually entering my password like on my 3rd gen Nest. I made sure to take a picture before removing and installing my new thermostat.
Google Home App
Most of hardcore Nest lovers really like the Nest app interface. The Google Home app was not widely accepted due to its interface. Now Google has made some updates in preparation for the 4th gen thermostat. I must have opened the Nest App 40 times trying to control the new thermostat. I’m still getting adjusted with using the Google Home app. Its not bad, but its not the Nest app.
Features
Smart schedule is really cool. Nest learns my patterns and sets my desired temperature based on the usage patterns. The cool feature I really love is that now you are able to let the thermostat suggest schedules without having it perform the action. This is a neat feature since I have to adjust the schedules that the Nest sets sometimes in the past.
Having the Nest temperature sensor included is a huge plus. I have a 2-story home, so having the ability to set the thermostat temperature based on the second level is a major plus. I don’t mind the sensor not having any motion capabilities as I have other smart devices that can detect motion.
Conclusion
The Google Nest thermostat is a device that gets a lot of things right. Seeing the device in person, it looks really good. I was a bit surprised of the feel though. You have to be careful installing since it feels to be mostly made of plastic. I removed the base a few times and had to be extra careful handling the device. The device is made up of mostly recycled material, so I can appreciate Google for being committed to sustainability. The new Nest thermostat is jam-packed with advanced AI features such as smart schedule, adaptive eco and proactive alerts.
These features are designed to reduce energy consumption and save money. If you are current Nest user and have no issues with using the Google Home app, I definitely recommend upgrading. You won’t be disappointed.

In the world of home automation, few devices have trended as effectively as the Google Nest Learning Thermostat, especially when paired with the Nest Temperature Sensor. After using this dynamic duo in my home, I can confidently say it stands out for its thoughtful design, intuitive features, and overall performance.
Installation Made Easy
For those with a bit of handyman skills, installation is a breeze. The package comes equipped with all the necessary hardware and, frankly, a user-friendly guided installation that walks you through each step. For someone who knows little about HVAC systems, the initial setup might feel overwhelming at first, but the clear instructions and visually appealing interface help cushion that learning curve.
Smart Learning Capability
One of the most impressive features of the Nest thermostat is its ability to learn your habits. After just a few days of use, the thermostat begins to adjust the temperature according to your settings at specific times, making it a seamless part of your daily routine. This kind of adaptability is not just a convenience—it’s a true energy saver. Once it got acquainted with my schedule, I noticed a marked decrease in my energy bills, all while maintaining a cozy home environment.
User-Friendly Interface
The interface of the thermostat is incredibly well-designed. The sleek outer ring allows for easy rotation to adjust the temperature on the fly, which is a fantastic touch. Additionally, it displays a wealth of information—including time, weather, and more—which keeps you informed at a glance. Coupling this with the Google Home app accessibility—where you can adjust settings on the go—makes for a comprehensive control system that integrates beautifully with my existing Google Nest devices.
Temperature Sensor:
The Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd Gen) is a fantastic addition that really extends the capabilities of the thermostat. However, it’s essential to install the sensor at an appropriate distance from the thermostat, allowing sufficient communication without interference. This installation aspect does involve a bit of trial and error; I found that experimenting with various placements yielded the best results. Once in place, the sensor complements the thermostat's efforts exceptionally well.
Performance
The performance of the thermostat is nothing short of impressive. It artfully balances temperatures throughout my home, ensuring a comfortable atmosphere without overburdening the AC. There’s a noticeable ease with which it maintains climate control, efficiently managing the temperature without the air conditioning running non-stop. It’s a marvel of engineering that showcases how technology can elevate everyday living.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) alongside the Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd Gen) deserves nothing less than an 11/10. It embodies the perfect mix of art and science, with user-oriented smart technology that enhances comfort and efficiency in the home. Whether you’re a tech aficionado or a casual user, this thermostat sets a new standard in home climate control. Highly recommended!
We call that the ultimate combo, Phil! Happy you're part of the Nest fam.

The new Google Nest Learning Thermostat is a much needed upgrade to the most popular smart thermostat available. Now in its fourth generation, Google has updated the tried and true design with slim bezels and a polished, color matched display available in three tones of gold, silver or obsidian. I opted for gold, as it looked good from the marketing photos and would match well with a variety of finishes in our home.
In the box Google provides all necessary mounting hardware, a 2nd Generation Temperature Sensor, optional cover plate, and the Nest Learning Thermostat. After unboxing, I immediately noticed how reflective the face of the thermostat was. Though the brilliant gold finish looked striking, I was curious if this affected visibility of the display.
Replacing my old Nest thermostat was a breeze, but even so Google has helpful installation animations to assist you. I recommend you take a photo of your thermostat wiring before you disconnect your old one just in case you mis label a wire. In my case I did not have a common wire to provide power, but fortunately it is not required for the 4th Generation Nest Learning Thermostat. After connecting it to WiFi and a brief update, the thermostat was ready to use.
As suspected, the highly reflective face made the display difficult to read under certain lighting and axis. It would have been great if they applied some sort of anti-reflective coating or offered a matte finish instead of the mirror finished display. After a few days I got accustom to it, but the thermostat is a great example of form over function. Though the face is considerably larger than the old Nest, the display does not actually go edge to edge and is only marginally larger. The new Farsight has more customization, allowing four different face options including animated weather conditions. Though I did find it cool that it can provide information beyond just the current and set temperature, I usually need to know the current or set temperature when approaching a thermostat.
I have owned a few Nest thermostats over the years, and I have always appreciated their design, simplicity, and functionality. After Google acquired Nest, Nest products have not maintained their strong support of the Apple ecosystem and unfortunately I have started to avoid Google products as a result. With the latest iteration, Google has added Matter support enabling cross platform integration and finally for Apple users this brings with it HomeKit. Though limited to adjusted basic HVAC modes and setting temperature, it is generally all that is needed and is a welcome addition to HomeKit. Of course this is a learning thermostat, so naturally it learned our habits and set its own schedule after a few days. Just as previous versions, the thermostat can even use multiple temperature sensors placed throughout your home and Google even includes one now.
The Google Nest Learning Thermostat is a good iteration to the original smart thermostat, providing a refreshed design and finally better integration making it easy to recommend over the previous generation. If you don’t currently have a smart thermostat and you like the striking design, the Nest Learning Thermostat is a great choice.

The Nest Learning Thermostat 4th generation is a great smart thermostat that is packed with energy saving features! This is my first Nest thermostat as I heavily use the Apple Home app, and the previous Nest Learning Thermostat did not support integration with Apple Home. Thanks to Matter, this thermostat now natively works in the Apple Home app.
While this thermostat does support the Apple Home app via Matter, there is one caveat to be aware of. My previous thermostat that had native Apple HomeKit support had the ability to set comfort settings through automations in the Apple Home app (Home, Away, Sleep, etc). Nest does not appear to support setting temperature presets/comfort settings through the Matter integration. So, while I can set an automation in Apple Home to adjust the Nest to a specific heating or cooling temperature (or auto heat/cool mode with a temperature range), there is not an option via Matter to set the thermostat to Eco mode or other temperature presets. It is disappointing that temperature presets cannot be set via Matter. With that capability, the thermostat would automatically be set at the right heating or cooling temperature based on whether the thermostat is set to heating or cooling mode. I do not want to use my thermostat in auto heat/cool mode and prefer to set the mode manually depending on the time of year.
While the Matter integration does not support setting temperature presets like Eco mode, you can set up auto home and away in the Google Home app. This can put the thermostat in Eco mode when all household members have left, and it can take the thermostat out of Eco mode when the first person returns home. While I would like to be able to do this in the Apple Home app, it has worked well so far through the Google Home app.
As far as looks go, this thermostat has a very sleek design which looks premium and modern. It is really nice that the thermostat turns like a dial to adjust the temperature up and down. This is very convenient. My previous thermostat had a touch screen which required multiple taps to adjust the temperature. Being able to adjust with the dial is faster and more convenient.
This thermostat is very responsive when making temperature changes, which is great. It also has a lot of features and intelligence when it comes to saving as much energy as possible while still keeping you comfortable. It monitors outdoor temperatures and can make adjustments to cooling and heating to avoid wasting energy and help you save money. When you set a certain temperature, the Google Home app will also tell you how long it thinks it will take to reach the desired temperature. There is also an Activity tab in the Google Home app which is very helpful and shows you the history of temperature changes on the thermostat.
Overall, this is a great smart thermostat with a wide range of features and a great design! And, I am hoping that over time, Google will add more capabilities to the Matter integration to allow for more customization outside of the Google Home app.

The installation was much easier than expected. It worked right off the bat. After I put in a simple schedule, it followed the settings. Now it adjusts to outside temperature and whether we are home. It includes another sensor for another section of the house.

So let me start by saying I’ve been a long time nest user, this was used to replace an old unit that just got tired and worn out. We were ready to buy and saw that this new device was freshly released. It is very convenient that it comes with a remote temperature sensor for that one room that always seems to be a little hotter or colder than the main area. The display is nice to look at as well, there are a couple screen animations to choose from, one being weather that will show if it’s raining, or storming hard outside, so that’s pretty fancy. Overall it functions as you’d expect a fancy thermostat to do so. Overall a well done product.
Hi Bambam123, thanks for being a long-time customer; we don't take that for granted. We're glad you like the product and those new fancy features (we think the weather animations are pretty slick too, if we do say so ourselves). Sounds like you're an old pro with our products, but we're always here to support if you need us. Cheers!
