I really like the path light feature as it lights up my hall at night just enough to see without ruining my night vision, and I know it will do that even if the power is out.
So far I haven't had any false alarms or real alarms either. It is nice that you can test it remotely so that you don't have to stand next to it as is blares.
An unlisted feature of the hard wired model is that it will alert you when the power is out, which is useful when you aren't at home. But it only does this by displaying a badge on the app icon, so you have to open the app
I wish it would interconnect with the other non-Nest detectors in my house, but the packaging clearly indicates it won't.

a lifesaving addition to your Nest home

when my daughter bought her first home, a Nest thermostat was my housewarming gift to her. When the budget Kidde smoke detectors that the remodeler had installed started dying, the Nest Protect was an obvious addition. As the Kidde detectors die, one by one, I have installed 4 Protects in her house. The last failure, a false alarm when she was at the grocery, caused the neighbor who heard the alarm to call the Fire Department. They broke into the house (gently) and found that the alarm was the defective Kidde detector (one year old device, not very inspiring).
The installation is a breeze; what a well thought out and seamless process they have made it. The integration into the Nest app, giving a one screen view of the status of the house, offers peace of mind for her, and as her parents, us as well.

Easily installed in under 10minutes. This is the wired version so you should know a little bit about doing electrical work. It sends you an alert to your smartphone when trouble is detected. It can tell between slow and fast burning fires. It can also detect carbon monoxide. I like the fact it gives you a heads up before it sounds the alarm. Helpful when you mean to burn what your cooking, haha, or bbq'ing. I really like the subtle nightlight it shines when I pass it in the hallway.

Pretty easy to install. I had no trouble getting the Nest on my wifi net.
Does self checks and a test monthly. Good for the max 10 years.
Only negative is the high $99 price, so it will be a while before all of my old units get replaced...

Best Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector

Did my research first and came to the conclusion that this was the best combination smoke & carbon monoxide detector available on the market. A little pricey but you get what you pay for. Ended up putting them in my entire house and have not regrets. For those techy people out there, this is a great smart product to add on to your home.

Got this to replace a traditional smoke detector which kept having false alarms in the middle of the night. No problems so far with Nest. It's great to see the status of all the detectors when away from the house. That's the primary reason for the purchase and it delivers on that. Nice to know this feature is present - pre-warning if levels are detected but not yet enough to alarm. A bit expensive but convenient if you are buying into the Nest ecosystem.
Ended up with a handful of these as all detector brands had to match and no regrets on doing that.

Second one of these

This is the second Nest Protect we've purchased. So far, they're fantastic devices. When you add them to a Nest ecosystem (we now also have the Nest Cam and Nest thermostat), they really offer a ton of useful functionality.
For example, some excess smoke might set off the smoke detector in the living room (maybe we burned something in the oven). It will speak, tell us where the smoke is, that it is, in fact, smoke (rather than gas or something), turn on our Nest Cam to record what is happening in the house, and turn the house fan off so it doesn't spread any smoke/fire.
It seriously ups the safety of our home, and we're planning on buying another one to put on the ceiling near our furnace.
So far, we've had zero problems. Set up was incredibly easy, and the things just work.

These were replacing a "major brand" that had integrated batteries and powerbackup and were about a year old (supposed to last 10) but kept detecting humidity and light smoke while cooking. These detectors, while more expensive, have been flawless after an easy installation. One thing that would have been nice is if Nest included a larger square cover bracket (similar to the one that comes with their thermostats) for covering the area surrounding the hole/previous area. These are square and the usually-round previous detectors provide an area of fade that is shown on the wall or ceiling. Purely a cosmetic minor request. Get these, though, because they are well worth the money for protection and control (via the app).

If you are in the market to start upgrading your home to connected, smart technology Nest is the place to start. Love the ease of installation of their products and how intuitive and user friendly they are. Nest Protect is THE way to go if you are looking to replace those boring, annoying old builder grade smoke detectors. Not only is it a smoke detector, it's a Carbon Monoxide detector as well! You can rest easy knowing these will alert you of either potential danger. We purchased the hard wired version which have been great. The installation was very easy and I'm about as handy as a mannequin. Highly recommend!

This is a really advanced smoke and carbon monoxide detector that is really easy to install and setup. The hardware is designed extremely well and it will work in a power outage, even if you buy the wired version, thanks to the built-in battery. I really enjoy the motion sensor light that lights up my otherwise dark hallway in the middle of the night.
If they added the ability to play music out of these like Google Home Mini and added APIs for better smart home integration, this would be the must have product for every home.
Unfortunately, Google has been neglecting the "Smart Home" aspect of this product and does not provide APIs or Integrations with other leading smart home services to make this device enhance my available smart home sensors. If this device was available in IFTTT then I could trigger smart home actions such as unlocking doors, turning on lights, and sending SMS alerts but since it is NOT, I have to buy additional alarms and sensors from other manufacturers to have a truly "Smart" home. Redundancy is probably best for these types of devices anyways.

We purchased 11 of these for our home. Installation was easy with the exception of the ones on the 20' ceilings; however that had nothing to do with the product simply location. When setting up make sure to choose the appropriate language (English/Spanish) otherwise you have to request it to be changed and it takes at least a day. The lighting indicators are nice as is the motion light at night. Although there is a voice - don't be fooled thinking that you have avoided the chirping - when the alarm does go off it chirps. Depending on the type of chirp (two types) you can determine if it's smoke or CO2. We hard wired ours with the hopes the batteries don't die and thus they remain maintenance free for the 10 yr life span.

I got tired of the chirping and changing those batteries, so change them out for these and it was a great decision. I know, smoke detector. But these are awesome. They talk to each and to you. Before receiving an audible alert you actually receive a voice alert when something's a mist. They give you a verbal warning before the alarm goes off. You can even set the ones in the hallway which I did to be night lights that automatically turn on when you walk down the hall to let your path. There are sensitive, they will detect when there is a really steamy shower. Great purchase.

We are selling our house and discovered we need to have a smoke/carbon monoxide wired alarm within 15 feet of bedrooms (even though we have an all-electric home) so we went to Best Buy and voila! found just what we needed. My husband installed it and it is terrific! The little ring is lit so it is a nice night light and when it senses movement it brightens, then when it doesn't sense danger it turns to green and shortly after you walk away it goes back to a pale white.
The new family will love it as they get used to their new home!

updated my smoke detectors. I had the conventional battery powered ones and thought that since I had the time and their useful life was ending I'd replace them.
They went up on the ceiling super easy and the setup was a complete no brainer. I don't have any other NEST products so I had to set up an account but then I don't check up on them like I do door locks. But the linking of all four and connection to the NEST account was easy.
They regularly check themselves. I hear them doing this. Feel good that this checks both carbon monoxide as well as smoke.

As a nest and google user, this worked perfect for me. The night light feature is awesome for my young kids and the self check system gives me peace of mind knowing my family is protected from fire and Cabron Monoxide. Hook up was very simple and straight forward, and the prompts in the app made it even easier to get online. Overall I'm happy I replaced those old smoke detectors with these.

We now have three google nest smart smoke detectors. One on every floor. Easy to install and set up. Warns you first by talking to you when smoke is detected. Definitely a plus when you have kitchen smoke from cooking. Just press the nest center and it stops. Nest does a self check periodically so you know they are always working. The night light is a real plus! We live in this home part time so the smart connection is wonderful. Highly recommend these detectors.

I replaced all of my old smoke detectors with these WIFI and Bluetooth connected smoke and carbon dioxide detectors. If one senses a problem the others will also tell you there is a problem.
Silencing can be done from your phone so you don't have to find a broomstick to press the silence button.
Very smart devices! A little more work to install if you want to use them wired into the house AC power. But came with batteries and will work without power. It will even tell you on the App if the power is off.

I upgraded my standard first alert smoke detectors to these nest ones a few weeks ago. Though only 3 years since installation, my first alert ones were malfunctioning one by one. I have anxiety & I was tired of wondering when the next one was going to fail. These nest ones were very easy to install, add to the app & connect to each other. I love the night light feature - so I don’t have to turn on lights if it’s dark in my house. Only downside is they don’t have a long lasting 10yr 9v battery, but 3 AA batteries - so there will be the additional expense of replacing those on a regular basis.

Brand response from Nest Support

Hi Missfish01, thanks for letting us know about the issue. It's unfortunate to hear that your Nest Protect devices have been malfunctioning one by one. Both battery and wired Protect require Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA (L91) batteries which will need to be replaced. We do not recommend using rechargeable or alkaline batteries as they will quickly drain and will need to be replaced sooner after installing them.
