Elegant Device
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have to preface this review by stating that I fully expected to be unimpressed by this device. I migrated from Android, specifically Samsung, several years ago to Apple. For me the basis for the move was that Android always seemed somewhat awkward and unintuitive to me. I had an iPad for years so adding an iPhone made my move to the IOS ecosystem complete. At times I have wondered what I've been missing in the Android world. The arrival of my Google Pixel gave me the opportunity to find out. My first impression, nice packaging. Unexpectedly the Pixel is packed in a oversized box considering the size of the contents. I thought this is a cool touch. Upon unwrapping the phone itself I quickly felt comfortable since the phone looks and feels very much like an iPhone. The Pixel is nearly identical in size to the iPhone 6s. The phone has a nice feel. You get a sense of a really nice build quality with the metal and glass back. A nice look really. I quickly notice the fingerprint reader on the back of the device. Not sure what I think of it's location yet. Seems awkward but I may get used to it. I do love how you can wake and unlock the phone with a simple touch on the fingerprint reader. Very nice. I am however definitely not a big fan on the glass surrounding the reader and which covers about a third of the rear of the phone. It's a fingerprint magnet. Maybe not a big deal since the Pixel will inevitably end up in a case. I will say that this glass area does make it easier to sense which end is up when you pick up the phone. Maybe a nice touch after all. I powered the device on and and proceed through setup. I was surprised to find this be really quick and painless. It's just a matter of activating the phone, entering my gmail account, setting up the fingerprint reader, hooking up to wifi, and setting up Google Assistant and I was using the phone in no time. Immediately I was surprised. The display was quite nice. Maybe not as nice as my iPhone display but still nice. Pixel is also very responsive. Faster than I expected. Android suddenly looked different, more elegant, more streamlined. I do some reading and discover Pixel is running a pure version of Nougat 7.1. I like it a lot. I find it more intuitive and less cluttered. I then start experimenting with Google Assistant. Another great surprise. Really more like a revelation. I have used Siri and Cortana often on other devices. Google Assistant immediately seems superior. More natural and more accurate. Unlike the competition I feel like I'm having a conversation with the Assistant and the device actually understands me. I like the Assistant chat interface too. I quickly realize that the Assistant's abilities are nicely integrated with maps, Chrome, etc. I then have to check out the camera and it's 12.3 megapixels. Again I'm pleasantly surprised. The Pixel takes nice photos which I think are on par with or nearly surpass that of the iPhone. The camera functionality is fast too. Much faster than an iPhone. I've snapped many test photos already and quickly discover that the camera is quite good in low light. I'm still eagerly exploring this new Pixel phone from Google but I am truly impressed thus far. In my previous experience with Android phones I always felt like the Android experience was somehow lacking but not with Pixel. Google has surpassed my expectations. I highly recommend Pixel.

Google doesn't disappoint...much...
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Google's Pixel has finally arrived! We've heard all the boasts from the company about how great the camera is and how smooth the new OS is (Android 7.1 Nougat) Well how does it all add up? I've always been an Android fan and some of my favorite phones have also been the most visually challenged. This phone is no different. It doesn't have much "Bling" factor to it, but I love that! It feels solid and is built very well. It feels good in your hand when using it and it is the perfect size for stowing away in my pocket when it isn't. The camera is as good as it has been billed. Naturally it isn't quite as good in low light situations but no camera is. But overall it takes some of the best pics I've seen from a camera. Battery life seems decent but not great and the fact that it runs a pure Google OS with no phone manufacturer's added in "fluff" helps it. The screen is very sharp and beautiful. Games and videos look great on it. Sound is about average for a phone, you can't expect much in that area from any phone. Now the cons...and there are only a couple. Google could have really set the bar but they fell a little short in my opinion. The biggest disappointment being it doesn't support wireless charging. The other two being no microSD card slot to upgrade storage, and it isn't waterproof. These aren't deal breakers, but for Google to skip these is a little disappointing. Overall, it is still one of the best phones out there and I would for sure give it a solid recommendation. I would give it a 4.5 if I could.

You can use it on any network! Not just Verizon!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my very first ownership of a high end phone so my standards were set pretty high when I needed a device to do everything I wanted. I don't have a Verizon account, but according to recent online news articles that had surfaced you can use the Verizon version of the Google Pixel on any carrier you like. So I bought a Tracfone BYOP kit and activated my Nano GSM Sim Card. Within minutes, I was using the Google Pixel on the Tracfone Wireless Network! I then proceeded to finish setup of the phone, connect my Google Account and Voila, I was finished and the whole process took 11 minutes tops. After updating all the apps and getting the phone app I needed to check my service balance, I checked out the phone. It's got a nice sleek design to it. Headphone Jack, fingerprint sensor on the back, camera flash, front facing camera. It's very handsome looking if I say so myself. Inside the phone, it has an NFC Chip so if you want to use Google Pay with your phone you can do that. Unfortunately, you can't expand the memory inside the unit but with 32GB of memory and online streaming services, owning a MP3 collection of your music seems like a thing of the past. Kind of a bummer on that end. Performance wise, this phone is super smooth as butter. I ran a couple of fancy gaming apps on the phone that have graphical demands and it handled each of the games without issues. With the inability to expand storage as said above, you may be pushing it if you are installing very large games that require 1GB or more for the initial installation The phone does charge really fast like the box says...... If you are looking for something that keeps you connected all the time and you're looking to break free from the device that you take a bite out of the fruit, this is a very attractive option. It has great sound, it handles well and it's very responsive in all everyday life situations you would use your phone for.

Best smartphone I've had my hands on - ever.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Okay, I was excited, but also a bit worried about taking the plunge on this phone. I haven't had anything other than an iPhone so far and the change over was a bit of a nervous one. That lasted about 5 minutes after I had it up and running; I am very, very (as the review title suggests) happy with what I got. I'll walk through from the beginning: Packaging was nice, came with a study charging cord and adapters. Printed instructions were essentially zero and I'm old school about having a document, so I was sort of worried at first. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that, even just pecking my way around, set up was significantly easier than my iPhone had been and took much less time, even without a paper reference. The phone feels nice in my hand and (maybe I'm imagining it) but it also feels a lot lighter than my iPhone - maybe it's just the way it lays. I have the Quite Black model and it looked so good and handled so well that I felt bad about putting a case on it. I did put a case on it and a glass protector and it still feels pretty cool. Screen is vivid, clear, and responsive. Nice selection of pre-loaded wallpapers too. Still trying to get the hang of the finger swipe being on the back of the phone, but I think I'm gonna like it. I had some concerns about navigation after significant exposure to getting around on apple products, but had no problems navigating the menus and think that the slide up app folder feature is very nice. The personal assistant has excellent speech recognition and seems to do a good job of matching synonyms to context when'reading' my speech. I like the voice better than Siri or Alexa, but that is personal choice. The battery seems to be holding up, even though I can't put the phone down. I'll have to see what the charging schedule looks like over the next week to be sure, but it doesn't look like a power hog yet. I don't plan on hauling it around any water or walking around in the rain with it, so the concerns about water resistance don't bother me at all. All in all, I really, really like this phone so far and I have to say that the assistance I had in getting it added to our account and in selecting accessories was top-notch.
