Really compact GoPro. I love the light on the front. I would like to have a screen and external battery, but know that those are not coming when you buy it.

Feels artificially limited in its settings in software, but the little light on it works well for my purposes. It's less expensive if you lose one of these than the current Black versions.

The GoPro entry level camera, now brighter!

Let's start with the obvious first - this isn't the top tier of GoPro cameras for those that want to start a career as a professional vlogger or make high end production movies. No, that's the NUMBERED HERO Black line that has features like interchangeable device shoes, replaceable batteries, larger lenses, front screens and is priced considerably higher. This camera is part of the basic / consumer level action camera line that started with the last generation and the basic GoPro HERO. This new "LIT HERO" has a lot of the features that made that first gen entry model a winner - ease of use for new users (built-in batteries that charge fast with USB, a single touch screen and a compact, lighter weight and durable camera body that's fully waterproof when closed) with a video light (diffuser is included and can be used or not) for filming in low light conditions. And that light is BRIGHT - it can be a little harsh, so I've been using the diffuser and the lower settings only - which means you can still get clear shots even at night. The compensation for that light is, of course, a slightly higher price so you'll have to decide for yourself if it's worth the price of entry vs the first generation. Video quality is good, though with a smaller lens and fewer options, it's not quite as good as the top tier camera. You do still get 4K 60 frames per second and your choice of 16:9 or 4:# aspect ratio shots and I've found that with good lighting (including the built-in light in the dark) you get good results. Of course you also get the standard GoPro mounting "fingers" to attach any accessories you might want. The battery is solid if not spectacular, but you can use an external battery for longer sessions, though at the cost of not being waterproof when doing this. The GoPro app is a requirement to use the camera effectively and access some settings / upgrades, but you don't need to buy a subscription if you don't want to, which is nice. At the end of the day, this is a nice upgrade on the entry level GoPro HERO that's solid for beginners / general consumers who want an action cam that's good in all light conditions without the price of the numbered HERO Black flagship line. Is it right for you? Well only you can answer that!

4K video in a small package with a built in light!

Action cameras are flooding the market and many are trying to look and feel and provide similar technology to the device that started it all, GoPro. The best thing about these action cameras is that they pack a serious amount of tech inside a very small package and this device unlike others, has a built in light and a larger lense with absolute 4K video and 12MP photo. Just like other GoPros its waterproof up to 16 feet, is lightweight and has similar touchscreen. This device is also voice controlled and its easy to set up and use with the Quik Gopro app and your video or photo gets auto uploaded to the cloud even while this is charging. The great thing about using these action cameras, it is the most stabilized camera in the industry compared to others and includes 2x slow motion in 4K which makes your action videos even more compelling. The other good thing with this device, its reasonably priced for all the tech it includes which is even better and more of reason to purchase this action camera.

Solid entry level action cam with LEDs

GoPro’s latest camera might sound like a drunk protagonist, but it’s a tight little package that sheds light on situations where other GoPro products wouldn’t capture much. The Lit HERO is a budget friendly action camera that includes a bright LED light on the front. Let’s see what it can do. GoPro is basically the original action camera, and the Lit HERO represents a sub $300 LED lit action cam that can do slow motion, 4:3, 4K60, and 12mp photos in a very small package. The physical size of this device is 2 1/4 inches wide, a little under 2 inches high, and slightly thicker than an inch. It sports a small touch screen to help frame shots, and is really intuitive to use. Out of the box, you get a couple mounts, usb cable, and some stickers. The mounting options are basic, but do offer a sticky mount for a helmet or other curved surface, as well as standard tripod mounting screws and compatibility with a lot of GoPro’s mounting accessories if you have previous investment in this space. The camera is picky about what SD cards it wants to use. It wants V30 cards; and reads the cards metadata to determine if the card is such. If not, it displays a warning, letting you know you may not be able to use the card for the highest settings. The camera truly is small, and built well. GoPro is legendary in it’s durability, and this unit seems no different. The outer frame appears to be an aluminum alloy, with plastic innards that help enable the wireless connectivity. The lens protector easily rotates off, and is replaceable which means if it gets scratched, it’s a fairly easy and cheap fix. The LEDs are protected by a glass cover. The camera also supports 16ft (3m) water proof certification. This means this camera can survive a bit of rain, and even a shallow pool. The footage captured seems congruent with what I’d expect. The sensor likes light, and the LED light helps. In low light conditions, the noise and blurring are quite high. Adding light from the LED helps, but it shines in outdoor situations. I prefer 60Hz, and thus 4:3 being limited to 30hz for 4k is a bit of a problem. Luckily you can do 16:9 4k at 60hz. The microphone is passable for general use, but you’ll want to sync in an external mic if you’re doing vlogging. Battery life seems to be at least an hour, with some additional time depending on the light usage and what resolution you’re recording in. The Quik app is the primary means of interfacing with the camera. This app is available on iPhone and Android, with the desktop clients being unsupported since late 2024. The one advantage of the apps is that they will do a wifi direct connection to the camera and download videos. The camera itself supports hosting on 5Ghz wireless, which means you can get some pretty decent data rates, making downloading large 4k shots less annoying. Even 20s of video can be almost 30mb of data, so WiFi 5Ghz is greatly appreciated. Once the videos are transferred they’re stored in the Quik app, and you can export them to your phone. Watch the advanced settings or you’ll get a scaled down version of the original video. I played with a few of the functions in the app, and it’s suggested edits, while cool - were sometimes hilariously tone deaf. It was interesting to see it mixing and matching footage with what was in my own phone’s video/photo library. I appreciate the creativity, but some of these AI creations are really strange. That said, the edits are sometimes perfectly on point and allow casual users to have a professional take on their video without much work. Overall the Lit HERO is a pretty solid little camera. My use cases will expand when the weather gets better, but I have no doubt that the camera is up to the challenge. With decent battery life, and durable construction with a budget price, the Lit HERO is a solid little offering. Highly recommended.

The Camera for Outdoor Low light situations

GoPro is the name for action cameras, they have a ton of different cameras at different price points and this one slots itself in not quite so expensive as the higher end ones, but adding some of those features especially for outdoor low light situations Packaging: To start, the packaging is the same as all GoPro cameras, it's in a paper wrapped box, gives it a little bit of a premium feel when you open it, includes the camera of course, a charging cable, a light diffuser and the mounting hardware for use with a tripod or gyro Use: To me the use of this camera is superb, as I said it slots itself in kinda ahead of the basic gopros and is more affordable than the top end ones. Many of their top end ones have a separate light which yes while it can be directional still sticks off the camera and takes up additional space. The size is so small and light that it can be used in situations where the other cameras with attached accessories may not fit. Sure it's an action camera but I've used them to look inside walls before (I live in a historic house, sometimes you just have to know what's back there without cutting a huge hole in the wall). The light makes all the difference with that and I wont have to get too creative or worry about it getting snagged on things. As far as action goes, of course it excels, having all of the features that a GoPro should have. It's worth noting that the image stabilization is done in the app rather than with hardware, but as with the lower end cameras, that seems to be more than enough. I've used the different capture modes, although I wonder why 4:3 is even included on things anymore, not just gopros but everything from phones to professional cameras, nothing really has 4:3 screens anymore with everything leaning towards 16:9 or something close to that. But of course that's not a hit against the camera itself. As for the slomo, it's one of my favorite features, to me it can make even the most basic things look cool, add some post processing effects and it's just a fun feature. There's a quick note worth mentioning about the light, while the brightness settings are adjustable, if you're using it for a vlog camera or up close, it can be rather blindingly bright, even with the lowest setting and the diffuser in place. Hopefully there's some software updates for that coming. Overall: It's a fun camera to have, useful in many situations even where the more expensive ones may not be due to it's compact size and integrated light. I can hope that there will be some software adjustments for the light levels coming, but I dont use it for a vlogging camera anyways so the brightness being a tough 'too' bright doesn't really bother me. All in all it's a great camera, especially if you're looking for that sweet spot between the bottom end gopros and the higher end ones.

    Simple to Operate, Yet Powerful

My first impression is of a very light, compact camera that is a small work of art with a screen that is almost as big as the camera. I noticed after a couple set up items like language choice, that the whole initial process is very well automated. You simply install the GoPro Quik app, and it will find your camera and take care of set up and your first firmware update. The singular thing I noticed with connectivity is that there is no fumbling around with phone settings, the engineers at GoPro developed their software to smoothly handle the connection process (I have an Android phone). Tip of my cap to those engineers for great software and for a mighty little wonder. This camera produced superior results in terms of 16:9 Video, 4:3 Video, Slow Motion, or the 12MP Photo mode; all this with a very concise GUI. Note you do need a V30 or higher SD card or you get a message that performance will not be optimized. Actually without at least the V30 SD card, none of the shooting modes will even operate; so the warning message needs to be amended by GoPro. The beautiful touch screen worked perfectly catching every single touch/selection. I found the camera’s diffused LED light to be another great feature. It has three levels of brightness. I wanted to film a wood lathe working in a completely dark garage. I tried all three settings of the LED light and was astounded by the (I’d say) professional results and subtle differences of the resulting videos – great. I did carry my camera while on a bicycle and put it inside my shirt-front pocket (it is small enough to fit the pocket); this idea worked well when not in use. I would recommend you use the included curved adhesive mount to put it on your bike helmet – that worked well for me. When viewed on my cell phone for playback the image is stabilized properly, and I did hit some big bumps that were smoothed out nicely. Another tip of the cap to the engineers for the stabilization circuits. One caution is that the little light diffuser has a bit of a weak seating on the camera and I do fear that in time it will fall off and be lost. I’d say the engineers should come up with a new part that clamps on more tightly. Overall, this is an outstanding value with excellent technology in a simple to use action camera. I highly recommend this fine camera.
