DO NOT BUY FROM BESTBUY! I bought the digital download and could not download it from BestBuy's digital library. Called BB tech support and got the run around. BB's solution was to contact HR Block to download it. Called HR Block and could not get a human. Finally was able to get a human at HR Block by calling several times and hitting zero for every choice. The HR Block person took pity on me and sent me a download link that worked. BESTBUY LOST AN ELITE PLUS Member for LIFE!!! ***UPDATE*** 3 weeks after purchase and still cannot download from BestBuy's digital library.

Lifelong Turbo Tax user makes the switch

As a lifelong Turbo Tax user my wife and I switched over to H&R Block 2019 edition last year. Our use case is perhaps easier than most, as this 2020 version connects to the cloud, and imported our 2019 information. Since little of it has changed it was literally as easy as plugging in #s from our W2’s and viola. State tax behaved the same. If you’re new to the H&R Block family there’s only a few identifying pieces of info needed, name, address, social security number, employment, wages, etc. One BIG advantage to H&R Block over Turbo Tax is the fact that H&R employs licensed tax professionals to help with scenarios out-of-the-ordinary. Since 2020 was most definitely a year out of the ordinary for so many of us. We each utilized the CARES Act by withdrawing from our 401ks to pay the mortgage, etc. They were incredibly helpful and professional in their assistance. This product really takes the sting out of tax preparation, and the dread of April 15th. PROS + easy setup, install and activation + various methods of personal data input + multiple methods to import W-2, 1099 financial data, incl TT + Premium Edition includes the Self-employment schedule C + scenario simulator determines itemized vs std deductions + Perfect product for more complex situations + Premium Edition Fed and State features + HR Block Tax professional consultation + Print, Mail and E-File filing options + Auto deposit refunds electronically CONS -there are so many help screens it’s a lot of reading to take in -some things could be presented a tad bit cleaner CONCLUSION Gone are the days of doing tax returns by hand. This edition differentiates itself from the others by offering users more options for self-employed and gig workers. It’s been two years since using Turbo Tax, but I think my family and I are here with H&R Block to stay.

If i could give it negative stars I would not so much the H&R Block product as I've used it for years but rather the complete lack of assistance Best Buy has given me with actually supplying me with the product I purchased. Never have received a valid link to down load the software but keep referring to H&R block. Suggest you source this locally or go direct to the source. Endless loop of no help here. All I get from the Best Buy digital library link is "Not Found" error message.

I've been an H&R Block software user for the last 5 years, and the 2020 version is much of the same as in past years. Similar to TurboTax (TT) and the rest of the competition, the key is making sure you are selecting the correct version/edition of the software based on your filing needs. The interface is clean and simple, and the questions are generally easy to understand. The other good thing is there's a wealth of online support accessible via hyperlink directly from the questions, so that's always a good thing. The explanations are not the easiest to understand however if you are not familiar with finance, accounting or business terms. The auto-import of 1099 and W2 data worked flawlessly for me, and since I'm a past H&R block user, all my prior year data synced over from last year's file, no problem. The downsides, which are similar to TT, is the state e-filing costs extra and are charged per return, so if you have to file in multiple states, it can get pricey. Also, depending on your state and the types of credits you are claiming, the software (or the state) may not support e-filing of the form, so you're forced to paper file. Also, make sure you choose the version of the software you need carefully; you can upgrade once you start, but the pricing structure is different.

I had to wait to do a review of the software until the IRS accepted my federal tax return. This H&R Block software is so easy to use! It walked me through the entire federal process asked all the necessary questions to help me file my return properly. It imported all of my information from using H&R Block before, making this process so painless. I will continue to use H&R Block for my tax filing needs! The worry free audit support helps me know if any issues arise, H&R Block will help me! Also nice to know you can file a total of 5 federal returns with this software, helping family members to get their tax returns done as well. I can not speak to the state filing feature as I live in a state without income tax.

Tax software has become easier and easier to use as technology has evolved, while still maintaining a similar look and feel. H&R Block, once again delivers a self-help walk through of entering your tax information, pulling your previous tax return from an imported digital file, and guiding you through maximum deductions for the 2020 tax year. Installation is fairly straightforward, activate and install the software, allow it to update (if needed), and then begin filling out the appropriate sections. I can also confirm this software was ready to claim the 2020 Stimulus credit for those that may not have qualified for initial pay out due to your 2019 earnings. Since I own a home, it was vital that I have a tax filing software that allowed me to deduct the appropriate deductions, along with my student loans, and business expenses throughout the year. The H&R Block app also benefits from a fairly robust help center, which launches topics, at your convenience, as you click through the steps; just in case you're not sure what each deduction is. The app even updates your refund or balanced owed as you complete each step. Overall, H&R Block continues to make this easier to use, and does a good job not making this too complicated to use. The self help guided steps are easy to follow, and if you still have questions you can reach out to a tax expert within the app or search their help center. They also offer an in-person consultation for more complex tax filing situations, included with the cost of Premium. The added benefit gives you some peace of mind, and the accuracy review prior to e-filing (which is also easy), make sure that you've captured every deduction possible. The app even asked about some deductions I wasn't even aware of. If you're a home owner, have a few 1099's, are self employed, this is the app I'd recommend! I still have a 1099 to wait on, but I'm happy knowing that I can enter them easily, and file as soon as I'm ready!

we have been using this now for years. never had an issue. at least for me, we have purchased, gotten a code, gone to H&R site downloaded the software from them and then input the code to activate the product. i am pretty basic so from my point, this is great. i dont own a house, we rent. married with 3 kids, and a father in law who lives with us. one of my kids is an adult now. i claim head of household. its pretty straight foward and tells you pretty much what to input and then does everything for you. if you have used them before, when it needs the year priors info it auto does that for you. it has saved us a lot of money. my father in law goes to H&R and has them do his taxes. we did it as well and got the same results. which would have saved him a lot of money cause they charge a lot more going to them directly as well as to get your taxes right then and there. we usually get our refund with a couple weeks after filing. if you dont mind waiting around for a couple weeks to get refund then i suggest doing your own. especially if your simple like myself. if you are not sure, then i suggest to get the software, do your own and go someplace and then compare yourself. if you find that you got less doing your own, 2 things, how much less especially with paying to get it done. so lets say going in you get 1200 back, and doing it on your own you got 1100, but going in you then paid 300, were as doing your own you paid 55$. so you still made more doing your own. and second thing, you can then go back and redo things to try to get what they got. maybe you forgot to write off some things etc. but like i said, for us, we have gotten the same amount doing it for us and my father in law, so we just use the software now. we are simple so we dont own a house, or houses, or a business etc. does not take that long to do as well. and once you do it one year, its easier the next.

Easy and reliable, but federal stronger than state

I’ve been using H&R Block tax software for tax preparation for over 10 years now and have always found the software to be reliable and reasonably easy to use. This version includes rental real estate calculations and these have worked well for me over several years now at the federal level. The annual updates have typically seemed to focus on tax changes rather than upgrades to the program itself, but 2020 does bring some welcome updates to the experience. 1. The interview process has been improved in some key areas, including depreciation and various 1099 sources, and is generally a little easier to follow. 2. There’s also a great new option to scan W2 forms from a link sent to a cell phone from which the software will perform an OCR scan and input the values directly. This is a great time saving option for those whose employers do not provide a compatible download option. In generally, the process is smooth, easy to understand, and does not require extensive tax knowledge given thorough explanations provided for most steps. There are still some areas where the program provides a laundry list of potential credits or adjustments for the user to enter without a lot of context or explanation for each one (or in some cases there are links to click for some but not others). I’ve found the state versions of the program to be less detailed and less well developed in general. While there have been some improvements this year, there are still a few issues: 1. The state program (GA in my case) provides several lengthy lists of items to enter which won’t apply to most taxpayers but are accompanied by very little explanation. 2. At least in the case of GA, it still doesn’t calculate state depreciation despite having access to all the underlying information from the federal return. This is my biggest issue each year. 3. If for some reason you need to override a value on the state return, the software will not allow you to e-file. Overall TaxCut is a solid and reliable program which has served me well. Just be prepared to do a little of your own research, especially on the state side, for less common tax situations.

The H&R Block software is my go-to for taxes every year. I can import my prior year taxes, and it fills out most of my information from that. Then it has easy to use processes for my self employment income, as well as all of our W-2's etc. I have used other tax products in the past but none come close to H&R Block!

Are you seeking a product to prepare your own taxes? H&R Block has been a trusted tax preparation company since 1955. Having used their products since the early 2000s, I decided to test their premium software. It was easy to download the software. The program was easy to navigate as tabs are directing you to each area. This program includes updates from the federal and state government. It walks you through each step so that you can apply different credits that are available to you for your particular filing needs. You can import previous financial records and information. A plus with having this software, is the ability to chat with a representative and the comfort of filing your taxes at home. PROS: The software guides you through the steps. Accuracy Checker Chat feature Updates made to software as needed Ability to file taxes in the comfort of your home. I would recommend HR & Block to not only a friend and my family as well.

So it took a while for my corrected tax docs to arrive this year, but once I logged into the software, it pulled up all my previous year info and I was ready to file quickly. One frustration was that I really don't think just to use of a 1099 should make me have to utilize to a Deluxe package instead of the basic. Nonetheless, the software makes my tax filing easy and simple. It even caught a few mistakes I made, as well as asking me questions and making suggestions that would help me lower my audit likelihood. Finally, the accompanying app follows my return from submittal to deposit in my account and keeps me updated as well. More than likely I will be using this again next year.

For those that have a good idea about their taxes…

For those that have a good idea about their taxes… The H&R Block software has a good reputation, and this package has the additional forms needed for the self-employed, even if you only get ‘some’ income from side jobs or independent work that would require a 1099. It seems for most online and downloadable software, as soon as you are dealing with the need for a 1099, you will want to go with the “Premium” package so you don’t find the need to ‘upgrade’ in the middle of working on your tax return. Those who have rental income to include already know they will need the premium packages from most vendors. The H&R Block “Premium” package seems best suited to those who are comfortable with doing their own taxes, as the software is more straight-forward to use and has less “see if you need this” questions that someone doing taxes for the first time might need to be sure they have covered all the bases. This is not a criticism, as this is the premium package and designed for those that have a business or business income on the side. No need for a lot of side-trips to see what might be needed. With that said there is a good questioning path that helps you be sure you haven’t overlooked anything – but it is a much more streamlined process than the “first timer” tax preparation software. Another way to make this point might be to say that the H&R Block does not try to present a lot of impressive “sizzle” – but gets to the point without trying to put on a show – if that makes sense. It’s tax time, let’s get it done, and get straight to the point. Nothing seems to have been overlooked, as the questioning is thorough, and it does seem to make sure you have covered all the bases without taking a lot of time going through the questioning branches. The Federal section is a good bit more comprehensive than the State (GA in my case), but that seems to be typical with most of the tax-preparation packages I have looked at. Overall, if you have a pretty good idea with preparing your own taxes, especially if you have done it before, the H&R Block “Premium” should cover all the bases and move you through completing this year’s return efficiently. Stay Safe!

I filed my taxes later than usual this year because of revised tax paperwork from various businesses, so I was happy that I had H&R Blocks's premium tax software to utilize to get my taxes filed. I have used them before for taxes, and it always goes very smoothly. The premium software seems to have an updated interview system which helps catch deductions that you may qualify for if the situation applies. It will ask quite a few questions that may not apply if your tax situation is simple but if your tax situation is a little bit more complex, i.e. gifts, inheritance, CARES Act 401k withdrawals, then you will appreciate the level of detail. If you run into issues, there are several ways to get help including chatting or calling tax professionals. There can be a long line, but you can always keep moving forward with filling out the rest and then circling back to your question. You may even have time to research and figure out the answer. Importing my documents was easy as usual. If you so choose, you can even use your phone to take a picture of your documents and it will fill in the data using OCR. I always appreciate that the software allows you to see what your standard deduction would be and compares it to the projected itemized deduction so that you don't spend time on itemization if it won't be worth it for you. State taxes were just as easy as federal taxes, and at the end it is as simple as e-filing and waiting for the direct deposit of the refund. I have heard a lot of dread around filling out taxes this year and dealing with the financial complexities of the last year. Do yourself a favor and get this software. It provides clear instruction, peace of mind, and they stand behind the results. I would recommend this for any level of tax complexity, but especially if you feel your taxes will be a little bit more complex than usual.

Trusty ol' Block Software... Strange behaviors

Let me start by saying that I've trusted H&R Block's software with my Tax Returns since the TaxCut-branded days. This is always my go-to software for ensuring that I don't miss any deduction or calculation opportunities, and as a small business owner AND former rental property owner, this has been a valuable piece of software. With that, lets get into the ONE thing that kept this from being a 5-star review. H&R Blocks software seems to be able to be "tricked" into showing you different refund/owe calculations when you make and correct mistakes. Several times when filing for 2020, I would accidentally enter a 1099 twice, then correct. What's interesting is that my displayed "refund amount" would change from the before duplication amount, to something where more taxes were owed than before once corrected. What this tells me is that there are bugs in the calculation software that seem to present themselves and don't self-correct. I tested this by fixing all of my mistakes in a file, then creating a new file and entering everything correctly the first time, and there was a $140 refund difference. My advice? This is still one of the best filing advice software products out there. Not much has changed for 2020, but as you're working pay attention to the changes happening in your refund based on what you're doing and don't be afraid to start over in certain sections to ensure your data is correctly entered. I think there are some "number stacking" bugs that don't get corrected on incorrect entries, or the way it calculates certain rules is affected when you back out and re-enter certain data. One highlight for 2020 seems to be that state tax software seems to download and install more quickly. I appreciated this considering that I don't always have a lot of time to sit down to my annual tax return process and this just made things generally faster. Thanks Block! See you next year!

Take my review with a grain of salt, I work in finance and have a degree in accounting, so taxes are probably somewhat easier for me to handle in general. That said, my tax return is not easy. I have multiple W-2s, multiple 1099s (including 1099-Div and 1099-Int forms), and a bit of self employment to boot. From the time I started the download of the software to the time I eFiled was barely over an hour. H&R Block has made this truly idiot proof. It walked me through every step of the return, asking follow up questions at key steps to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything (at least once reminding me of something that I had forgotten). I did notice that there is apparently an option to import a W-2 from certain payroll providers and have part of your return automatically done for you. Unfortunately, my employer doesn't use one of the payroll providers that is compatible so I can't speak to how effective that feature is. If your payroll provider is compatible and it works, I can only seeing it being quicker and more idiot proof. There is a joke amongst accountants, "I don't do taxes because my goal is to only file one fraudulent return per year and I'm saving that for myself." The meaning behind the joke is that the tax code is so complicated that there is no way to prepare a return that isn't wrong. H&R Block has come pretty close to simplifying it to the point that you just might actually get it all right.
