Multiplayer returns to Halo-esk, but story suffers

The game's multiplayer returns to its Halo roots; however, the story suffers within the context of a "Middle Game". With how heavy the talk about chasing Master Chief was, I was expecting it to last the whole game, it was 5 mission. The game is trying to capture that Halo 4 story magic, but succumbs to giving us more of a character that I cared less and less about as the story went on. (Buck from HALO 3: ODST is in those missions though, and he's fantastic! Nathan Fillion reprises his role and made story mission more fun with him around.) It must also be said that of the game's 15 mission, 3 are walking around and talking to people (about 20 min if you want to collect all the intel, 3 min speedrun), 9 are with the new character, and 3 are with Master Chief. I understand wanting to introduce a new character, but only 3 missions with Chief is still too short. The game needs to be played on Heroic or higher as normal and easy are just that EASY. Legendary is still as hard as ever. This mostly comes from your squad of three other Spartans that can revive you upon death. Their AI is okay, but leaves something to be desired. The big factor for HALO 5 is its multiplayer. 343 refined HALO 4's multiplayer and it's fantastic. Warzone, the big multiplayer advertisement, is a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena)-esk style where the first to reach 1000 points win, and there appear AI soldiers and bosses that will help get you to that point total. Overall, the game is a good game, but due to the lack of story that actually happens and the false advertisements of an epic chase after the Master Chief that ends after 5 missions ( A third of the game), the game left me wanting. Now begins the wait of 2-3 years for HALO 6.

The online play is fresh for the series with a ton of options for your character. Controls and graphics are solid and easy to learn. The story is ok... When you play as master chief the story is deep and drives the game, sadly you only get to play as him for about 3 out of 15 missions. Locke is the Spartan you play as for most of the game with his only story being to follow or chase the master chief. The only other downside to this game is the complete elimination of any split screen play.

Great campaign + even better multiplayer

Lemme start off buy saying that I'm a recent convert to xbox (and halo). I purchased and played through the Master Chief collection a week before Halo 5. The campaign modes for those games were amazing with a great storyline. The advertising for Halo 5 made one believe that this would be a Master Chief story as well, but it is mostly played through the eyes of Spartan Locke, with only 3 real missions where you play as Chief. This would take a star off, but the campaign was entertaining nonetheless. The ending, however, left a lot to be desired. There basically was no ending, just an introduction for the next halo. You play through 6-7 hours of campaign only to be given a 2 minute cinematic at the end, which didn't really conclude this arc of the story. Now, the real reason for the 4-star review. THERE IS NO SPLITSCREEN Halo is all about playing with friends and running them over with warthogs and tanks, but THERE IS NO SPLITSCREEN. It's strictly a one person per console game. Why Microsoft would do that, is beyond me. Maybe they want people to buy the MC Collection. Campaign can be played with 3 other people, but online only, and each must have their own console and copy of HALO 5. Multiplayer is as awesome as ever. Not as fast as Call of duty, and not as slow as the original halo trilogy, so just the right kind of enjoyable. Maps are well balanced, great looking, and fun. Search up videos of warzone, which is a new addition to the Halo multiplayer. It's a hit or a miss for most people, but I found it enjoyable from time to time. Summary Great campaign, with meh ending NO SPLITSCREEN (try the Master Chief Collection for that) Fun multiplayer with plenty of maps and game modes

Excellent Addition to the Halo Universe

PLOT Master Chief has gone AWOL and Fire Team Osiris is tasked with tracking him down. The campaign is about 8 hours long on Heroic. There is plenty of challenge and good level design. It progresses the story of Master Chief and the Halo Universe. The game features great cut scenes like previous Halo games and this one has stepped up the action with jet packs and acrobatic parkour scenes. GRAPHICS AND AUDIO The graphics are top notch in both the cut scenes and during gameplay. I even liked the subtle details such as the different HUDs for each character. The music is again excellent and exactly what you would expect from a Halo game. GAMEPLAY AND MULTIPLAYER The gameplay is reminiscent of Halo 3, fast paced but still tactical. I enjoyed the new elements such as aiming down the sights, the dash boost, ground pound, and sprinting to name a few. The multiplayer is back to the likes of Halo 3 including slayer, team swat, and swatnums. The new warzone mode is a very nice addition to the game and features different tactical elements than in the smaller multiplayer fights. The REQ system takes a little getting used to and I'm not sure how I feel about it. You can buy REQs with money ($2.99) or in game earned currency. The REQs have permanent items like armor and skins and temporary items like different weapons and vehicles. Think Call of Duty Advanced Warfare for the armor and weapon skins, but they are permanent. This is how you customize your Spartan's appearance. The temporary items remind me of Titanfall's card system, where when you use an item in the match it's gone. OVERALL 9/10 it is has a great and engaging campaign, excellent graphics and music, and a lot of replay value in the multiplayer sections with traditional modes and the new warzone mode. I would have liked to see a little longer campaign and definitely wanted more after I finished it. Other than that it has the same great Halo feel with all the guns you know and love.

The multiplayer in Halo 5 is as good as its ever been. The new Warzone mode which includes AI enemies is a blast to play. The minor tweaks to weapons is a welcome change. The campaign was fun to play with some friends but it wasn't great. 343 has been great with updates and all the future map releases are free. Buyer be warned, if you're looking to play with somebody at home, this is the first Halo that does NOT include split-screen.

This is one of the best Halo games I played since Halo 1 and 2. The controls are great and the added new abilities give it a fresh feel. the weapons have either been upgraded to feel better and the new weapons are a blast to use. Graphics is top notch and the multiplayer is the best so far. The only reason why this is 4 instead of 5 stars is that the campaign mode is short and lacking in real depth. Enjoy!

I wouldn't call myself a Halo "fanboy", even so I own Halo 1-4, Reach, and Master Chief Collection. But I wanted to see what happens next in Master Chief's saga. The campaign is fun to play, and it's interesting always having 3 other teammates with you at all times, a departure from being mostly a solo soldier in the previous installments. But the NPC teammates that are always with you leave a lot to be desired in terms of their AI. They are dumb. For fun, I always ride gunner when getting in a Warthog or Mongoose, and the NPC teammate driver has an exceptionally tough time figuring out what it wants to do: go in one direction and then backtrack, bash into a wall or concrete barrier a few times, or just drive both of you directly in front of the bad guys. But it's overall enjoyable! The multiplayer can be brutal, but they've made a lot of improvements from previous games that make it all feel satisfying to play. With requisition cards, purchased with points earned after matches, they give more variety to people wanting to play around with different guns, perks, and vehicles in Warzone. There's only the moshpit of Arena (that tends to be Slayer) with various objective games and smaller maps, and Warzone which reminds me of Unreal Tournament 3 multiplayer with big maps and going from base to neutral points to enemy base. But again, fun to play all around!

    Reignited my passion for Halo!

I have played Halo since the original xbox version, Halo: Combat Evolved. In fact, I have owned and played every Halo game to date, including the spin-off games such as Halo Wars and ODST. After many years of being a fan, I always find Halo fun. However, Halo 4 was a major let down for me and my interest in the series was finally waning. I pre-ordered Halo 5 expecting to be let down again but ordered it simply due to being a loyal fan. I was extremely happy and surprised to find that I LOVE Halo 5 and it has totally reignited my interest in the series! Online is incredibly fun and addicting. I love the Area multiplayer games the most and find them a lot of fun to play with my friends. The campaign so far is also a ton of fun. The graphics are beautiful and they really have added a lot of new features to gameplay that make it feel different yet not too far off from the "Halo" feel. My biggest and only complaint is that they took away local play. You CANNOT play split screen co-op or multiplayer anymore!! Talk about disappointing. You can only play with your friends through Xbox live. Overall, I LOVE this game! It would be perfect and I would give it 5 stars if it still had split screen capabilities for local play.

Great graphics and awesome story line. I think this was one of the best halo games so far because the graphics are great and the online play is so much fun. Also there are packs to unlock when you level up when playing online which is pretty cool. Only down side is there's no split screen which means no multi-player on the same TV anymore but other than that it's pretty fun.

    Still a Halo Experience

Halo 5 may present some new ideas and characters, but is still a true Halo experience. Graphics: 5/5. The settings are various and unique, offering beautiful display of colors, impressive scale to structures, and gorgeous cgi cutscenes. Gameplay: 4.5/5. Like the Halo games prior to 5, whether it be gunplay or manning a vehicle, controls are very tight. New features such as aim down sights, jet pack burst, and the Spartan slam are welcome editions. Campaign: 4/5. This is perhaps the most divisive aspect of the game. Like in Halo 2, you play through missions with two different protagonist on converging storylines. The divisiveness comes from the disparity of time the new protagonist receives over the Chief. I personally did not mind this, as I enjoyed playing from the perspective of Team Osiris. The story itself was solid, but was a bit on the short side. Multiplayer: 4.5/5. Again, Halo 5 offers a familiar experience to fans in its multiplayer, but offers some great new features. Warzone is a new game mode that is a blend of the big team battle and fire fight modes. Requisitions presents a new twist on multiplayer advancement both in game and out, as players gain access to better weapons and vehicles through requisition packs and may use them based on how well they do in a match. Overall 4.5/5

Not The Experience I Was Hoping For

After playing Halo: Reach and Halo 4 my feelings towards the Halo franchise began to re-kindle. Now not saying this game is not necessarily good, it simply just does not fit the criteria that I would think a Halo title should uphold. The graphics are absolutely gorgeous no doubt, but my biggest flaws are with the game play. For myself it seems like this Halo is transforming into a Destiny based COD game. Now both are exceptionally good titles, but individually not combined. So far the campaign has been interesting and for the most part enjoyable, but not anything to be in shock or awe over. The multiplayer though (Warzone) is a new take on the traditional Halo play style, and really provides a unique twist on the traditional multiplayer you would expect from a Halo game. In my opinion this is a good game to get when it goes on sale, but with a market littered with great titles both single player and multiplayer you could possibly find a better experience elsewhere, or at least one that will capture your attention for an extended period of time.

Halo 5 was worth the wait - graphics, storyline and gameplay. This is the downside to Halo 5, Microsoft remove the local lan connection and split screen game mode and that really sucks. Not good. In order to play campaign co-op you have to have 2 systems, 2 games and 2 Xbox live accounts.

Halo 5 is second game of "forerunner" trilogy being done by 343 industries after "Bungie" left the Halo franchise to Microsoft when they got with the original Halo Trilogy(also throw two side games with Halo 3:ODST and Halo:Reach) Master Chief is back with Blue Team(fellow Spartan IIs from Halo books. Every halo fan must buy and read the halo books) along with New Spartan IVs lead by Locke(Locke was in halo live action series Halo:Nightfall) these two groups of Spartans are after the same thing "save humanity" but both have different ways on achieving that hence why they are fighting against each other. Now The Arbiter is Back(he was main character from Halo 2 and 3 and had appearances in Halo books) along with the many other familiar faces. The single player is great runs a smooth 60FPS but no more two player split screen like in the other halo games. The multi-player online is great and runs smoothly unlike Halo collection last year. This game is a must buy for any die-hard halo fan along with buying halo books.

The online plays better than it ever has before. Graphics are amazing and the controls are tighter too. Also a lot of the different load-outs from 4 have been incorporated into your regular move sets. Running, climbing, ect. Also, the warzone game type is interesting where you can buy, in game currency, vehicles and weapons to use. And you have to be strategic with it as well. So it adds another layer to the game play. I can see myself dump hundreds of hours into the multiplayer because it is just that fun. The story on the other hand is the worst of the series. The campaign is almost completely forgettable. The story never really gets started. And Locke is one of the worst developed characters I have ever played as in Halo. And you play as him through most of the game..At least the Arbiter in 2 had motivation. Still recommend for the great online play though. Even if the story is terrible.

I've played every single Halo game (except for Reach and Halo Wars) ever since Halo: CE came out for Xbox in 2001. Being a fan of the series, I had high hopes for this game, and they were met and then some! The campaign, as many others have expressed, is different than I expected. However, I put the campaign, including gameplay and story, up there with my favorites, Halo: CE and 4. The story completely changes the Halo universe and I look forward to the next game! In regard to the multiplayer, let me begin by explaining that I have never enjoyed multiplayer in Halo or any other game. That being said, I've had a blast playing warzone multiplayer! While it still requires skill, the players are more evenly matched due to the high number of players in a match. I look forward to trying the other game modes soon. All in all, this is a fantastic video game that lived up to the hype.

Multiplayer is a blast. It still feels like Halo, but a little more complex. What halo 4 should have been. That said, the campaign is kind of unsatisfying and takes a while to not go anywhere. The advertising is completely unconnected to the story. The arena spawns are sometimes terrible. Warzone and breakout are far more fun than I ever thought they'd be. The maps are going to be free. Weapons are all balanced. It's fun, with minor gripes that can be patched/remedied on the multiplayer end. On the single player end, you'll want to play it if you're a halo fan but don't expect the greatest story Halo's ever told.

Let me start by saying I am not a past Halo player and actually bought this for my husband. I do however play Call of Duty Advanced Warfare so my opinion is based on that as a comparison. I will say that the graphics are beautfiul and they obviously spent a lot of time in making sure it was perfect. My husband and I play call of duty together, so I had bought this to kind of branch out my horizons. He ranted and raved about Halo in the past. I however must say that I was a little disappointed. I know that loyal Halo customers like my husband will probably love it regardless because they are drawn to the story. I was really disappointed that the game did not have the ability to play 2 player split screen. We currently play 2 player split screen on COD online and its tons of fun plus something we can do together as a couple. My kids like to play COD together as well and they cannot do that with this game either because it does not provide split screen capabilities. I know that the split screen takes a way a little bit of the whole "experience" but some of us enjoy playing together and nowdays with everything being electronic based there is not a whole lot that we do together as a family. Taking away the ability for two people to play together while in the same room just seems to be a ploy for Microsoft to require more than one xbox per household to play and for the makers of Halo to sell more games because it would also require another disc to be purchased. So even though we have an xbox and four controllers only one person can play at a time. Seems like a waste to me. My husband has not even tried to play the game any farther because be was so frustrated that we could not use it in split screen for us and the kids. So our purchase will probably just end up sitting in its case unused and be a waste of money. We will just continue to play COD as a family and hope that when COD black ops III comes out they have not chosen to make the same fatal flaw. My intention is not to discredit the storyline or the game at all as a single player game though. I am sure it is amazing to those who play it by themselves or with friends or family that do not live in the same household. However for us it just fell short. If your intention is to play alone then you will probably love it. I will say that I did play it alone just to try it out and I thought the graphics along with the way it moved was brillant. I hope that with the next installment of the series that take into consideration those of us who play as a family or as a couple.
