    Unbiased opinion

Let me start by saying I am not a past Halo player and actually bought this for my husband. I do however play Call of Duty Advanced Warfare so my opinion is based on that as a comparison. I will say that the graphics are beautfiul and they obviously spent a lot of time in making sure it was perfect. My husband and I play call of duty together, so I had bought this to kind of branch out my horizons. He ranted and raved about Halo in the past. I however must say that I was a little disappointed. I know that loyal Halo customers like my husband will probably love it regardless because they are drawn to the story. I was really disappointed that the game did not have the ability to play 2 player split screen. We currently play 2 player split screen on COD online and its tons of fun plus something we can do together as a couple. My kids like to play COD together as well and they cannot do that with this game either because it does not provide split screen capabilities. I know that the split screen takes a way a little bit of the whole "experience" but some of us enjoy playing together and nowdays with everything being electronic based there is not a whole lot that we do together as a family. Taking away the ability for two people to play together while in the same room just seems to be a ploy for Microsoft to require more than one xbox per household to play and for the makers of Halo to sell more games because it would also require another disc to be purchased. So even though we have an xbox and four controllers only one person can play at a time. Seems like a waste to me. My husband has not even tried to play the game any farther because be was so frustrated that we could not use it in split screen for us and the kids. So our purchase will probably just end up sitting in its case unused and be a waste of money. We will just continue to play COD as a family and hope that when COD black ops III comes out they have not chosen to make the same fatal flaw. My intention is not to discredit the storyline or the game at all as a single player game though. I am sure it is amazing to those who play it by themselves or with friends or family that do not live in the same household. However for us it just fell short. If your intention is to play alone then you will probably love it. I will say that I did play it alone just to try it out and I thought the graphics along with the way it moved was brillant. I hope that with the next installment of the series that take into consideration those of us who play as a family or as a couple.

A good game that needs some tweaks

I've always been a Halo fan, and when Halo 5 came out I had to get it. It plays a lot like how Halo 4 did, but with a more features that keep the game moving smoother during battle. The game looks amazing and the story mode is good so far. My only real problem is with the online play. 343 seems to have always missed the mark on multiplayer compared to Bungie. Multiplayer is fun, but a few of the new game types they introduced aren't as fun as previous game types. They will most likely fix or tweak these in an update to meet people's expectations, but until then you'll have to deal with some really fun game types mixed in with ones that feel they need more work or should be replaced all together.

    A Continuation

First of all, let's get the obvious out of the way - yes, a lot of people are complaining about the campaign. And yes, you do play primarily as Spartan Locke. But, without spoiling things, it weaves a pretty potent tale and gets really good at the end. One thing I will say is that it does suffer a bit from Empire Strikes Back syndrome in that it's obviously the middle part of a larger story, but don't let that deter you. This is a great campaign. In my experience, the squad AI is *mostly* solid (caught them running around aimlessly once or twice), and the multiplayer is the best since Halo 2. I would definitely recommend it to established Halo fans for the multi, but newcomers should at least read up on the lore before tackling the story.

This game is very good - don't get me wrong. The graphics look great and gameplay is smooth. In fact, because it's so smooth (60fps), it doesn't have split screen multiplayer. Kind of a bummer since that is what Halo was built upon. Also, I'm a HUGE Halo fan and the multiplayer on this is fun, but so repetitive. The maps are all the same it seems and if feels like they're all forge type maps. I'm going to stick with the glory of Master Chief Collection for multiplayer i think. They changed a lot on this. The campaign is a good time though and it's a decent lenght - 15 missions, but 3 or 4 of them are basically just gimmes.

Got this for the campaign and storyline as I don't play much multi-player. Graphics are top-notch and the story was okay but the game play was awesome. There are plenty of weapons and vehicles to select and pick up so you don't end up using the same boring gun over and over. Some of the enemy voices are a little childish but they can be amusing after awhile. Overall, a great game but rather short. I didn't time myself but I'm pretty sure it only took only 10-12 hours to finish. Multi-player probably offers a ton of game play but as I mentioned, my current lifestyle doesn't allow me to play much online. Have fun!

After the horrible Master Chief Collection 343 released, I was super skeptical about getting Halo 5. However, after a couple of friends wanted me to join them in the game, I pre-ordered and it turned out to be amazing. 4-Player Co-op on the campaign alone was fun. It's not just the campaign though, it's also the amazing Warzone and Arena multiplayer modes that make this Halo feel like it went back to what made Halo amazing, which in my opinion means they went back to Halo 2. Great gameplay, fun online multiplayer, the lack of split-screen is disappointing, but I understand why it's not there as 343 stated. Either way, great game, totally made me a Halo fan again.

The way the developers hid the jagged lines without relying too heavily on anti-aliasing was clever. The gameplay for the campaign is good, (I haven’t beat it yet) and the story seems fine at the moment. The only complaint that I have is that the door interfaces are something archaic and almost resemble the original Halo. How many times does a character go up to an interface? 20-30 times? Make it realistic and make it look good! This is an Xbox One, not a 360. Anyhow, those of us who grew up playing the original Halo on the original Xbox know that we will most likely love this game no matter what its flaws are. So my short opinion on Halo 5? So far so good. ;)

    An evolving franchise

Halo 5: Guardians is an evolution of the Halo franchise. As for as whether that path is good or bad depends largely on the individual player's own preferences. For players who come into Halo 5 with an open mind and accept what it gives, they will find a largely enjoyable way to spend some free time. For those who go into it with certain expectations of how they want the game to be, they may be a bit disappointed. The campaign is handled Halo 2 style, with missions shifting back and forth in perspective from both Blue Team's and Fireteam Osiris's points of view. The biggest departure from previous entries in the Halo franchise is the addition of constantly-with-you fireteam members. You no longer tackle the missions alone, even on single player. Instead, the Master Chief is accompanied by three other Spartan II's (which is a fantastic touch for those familiar with the Halo universe novels "The Fall of Reach" and "First Strike") while Agent Locke is accompanied by three newer generation Spartan IV's. Multiplayer is divided into two sections: the more competitive Arena and the more casual-oriented Warzone, a first time entrant into the Halo series. Warzone is a large-scale PvPvE which pits two teams of 12 Spartans against each other and also against A.I. controlled Promethean and Covenant combatants, with the winner being the first team to reach 1000 points. A point of controversy has been the introduction of microtransactions, though fortunately they're mostly cosmetic and won't have much of an effect on gameplay itself. For Halo veterans, BTB and Forge are noticeably missing but 343i has indicated that they will both be released with the next update that comes before the end of the year. Gameplay-wise, another big change was the ability to aim down sights for all guns, rather than just a select few as in the previous Halo games. Additionally, activating ADS (called Smart-Link in Halo 5) while your character is airborne will activate your suit's thrusters and keep you aloft for a limited amount of time. Speaking of thrusters, you can now also use your suit thrusters to quickly change direction as well, adding another dimension to movement. The final new trick 343i added was the Ground Pound, which lets you jump into the air then select an area to launch your Spartan at. When you hit that spot, you will do AoE damage to any nearby enemies. It's a nice gimmick, but not something that I see anyone using on any difficulty level higher than Normal. In summary, Halo 5: Guardians adds some new wrinkles to a veteran franchise while paying homage to its roots as well. The game is fun to play as is, and should only get better as 343i and Microsoft continue to evolve it beyond launch.

I love, love, love this game! The single player campaign, though it switches from one character to another, has a nice story behind it and is fast-paced. Multiplayer is probably the best in the series and in my opinion has even surpassed Bunnies previous games. The graphics are amazing and the action is top notch. My only complaint are that you play as Spartan Locke in all but 3 missions, there is no local co-op and the commercials depicting Master Chief as a trader and thus being hunted down by Locke are simple adding because that actually has nothing to do with the game. Besides the minor gripes this is an awesome game that comes highly recommended.

    Exactly what I expected

Halo 5 is exactly what I would expect from a Halo game. I found the campaign, despite complaints of being short, superficial, or misleading, to be very enjoyable, particularly if you have knowledge of the Halo books. Without them, it is certainly possible that some plot points will go over your head. Overall, it took me about 8 hours, which I was perfectly comfortable with. The pacing was great, the story was typical Halo fare, and I found the purchase to be worth it for the campaign alone. The game also features new gameplay changes, such as the ability to aim down sights with any gun, a thruster pack that lets you quickly dodge to the side, the ability to sprint at any time, and the ability to launch a "ground-pound" attack from the air. All of these are incredible changes that really serve the mix the Halo formula up while still keeping things comfortably familiar. The online multiplayer is also a blast. The Arena mode is similar to the multiplayer offerings of previous games, and should be familiar to players. There are small changes to the classic slayer format, like countdowns to weapon spawns, but overall it is a very similar experience. One standout addition is the Breakout mode. This is a mix of SWAT mode and capture-the-flag, where two teams of 4 players, without shields, attempt to eliminate the opposing team or else bring the flag back to their own side. These rounds are quick, intense, and brutal. The other major new addition is the Warzone mode. This is a huge 12v12 competition where you score points by either eliminating enemy players, capturing and holding bases, or killing AI enemies. Matches go for about half an hour or so, which is personally a bit long for my taste. I felt that this mode was really dragged out, and was at the mercy of the new Req system. These are packs of virtual cards which can be bought using either real money (for anywhere from a few dollars for a bronze pack to 25 dollars for the premium Warzone pack) or Req points, which are earned in-game. These packs can contain anything from new cosmetic types of armor or emblems, which are unlocked permanently, to one-used items such as the ability to call in a scorpion tank or rocket launcher. The ability to use these cards still has to be earned in the match, so it is not totally unbalanced, but people who are willing to spend real money still have a clear advantage. It takes an hour or two of playing Arena to buy one gold Req pack, or about 20 minutes to buy a bronze one. In summary, I wouldn't buy Halo 5 if this mode is the only one you are interested in. It is a fun diversion for one or two matches, but each match drags on for too long for it to remain fun. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Halo 5. The campaign was exactly what I expected, the new gameplay changes are fantastic, the Arena mode was also familiar with a few nice twists, and the Warzone mode was slightly disappointing but still mildly entertaining. I highly recommend this game.

Typical of the Halo franchise, this game has solid mechanics, great graphics, fun gameplay, but a very short single/co-op story mode. Also, be aware they ditched split screen co-op. Online is fun and bigger than ever. New REQ packs provide special weapons and vehicles. Online has always really been where the franchise focused its longevity, which is sad for those of us who really enjoy the co-op experience and wish for more. Overall, I'd recommend buying the game on sale. It is a very solid title, but may leave some feeling a little gypped at full price.

In its 14 years, Halo has never felt so good to play. An updated arsenal and great new mobility mechanics give both campaign and multiplayer and modern touch without sacrificing Halo’s classic feel. It fails to introduce its new Spartan characters in a meaningful way, and the story does make some odd logical leaps, but it’s still fast, beautiful, and fun – especially with four-player co-op. Guardians’ multiplayer harkens back to the Halo 2 glory days with tons of balanced maps and fun modes, and the tactical new Warzone mode absolutely steals the show.

Halo 5 is absolutely EPIC. I'm more of a single player campaign person myself, and I really love how 343 was able to bring Halo into the Next-Generation by combining alot of the old "Halo-esque" ways with some new modern twists. It's fantastic! Yeah sure, the commercials are a leading misleading; and you don't get to play as Master Chief as much. But it's still a great story! And I'm sorry, but 60 FPS in Halo just changes everything. It's SO SMOOTH. Warzone Multiplayer is EPIC as well. I don't really go for much multiplayer but Warzone is like a fusion between the best of all worlds! So much fun!

Story is not a strong point, but is still fun inspite of this. Action in the cut scenes looks great. I like that the 4 players in the campaign finally get their own separate identities instead of Master Chief 2, 3, and 4. Controls are improved. Characters will actually grab ledge edges when jumping, and you can perform different smash moves. Breaking through walls never gets old. :-) Multiplayer has a host of new and classic options. If you've been a fan before, there is no reason not get this game. If you are new to the series, where have you been? We're glad to have you join us.

This is a great Halo game considering fans don't expect a game as excellent as any of the entries in the original trilogy. The game is fun and entertaining, multiplayer is fast paced and exciting. Overall I like most of the changes, although I still prefer Halo with no sprint and no armor abilities. Major problem with the game is lack of split screen. Upcoming Battlefront is going to have split screen, so I see no viable excuses. 343 will hopefully get it together for Halo 6. Overall great game, would definitely purchase.

Well so far I've not played campaign yet only cause I'm waiting till I play through master chief collection campaigns first just to refresh my memory on the story BUT THE MULTIPLAYER IS SOLID! I love warzone so much and actually getting into arena a bit some halo purists might have problems with some changes like ads and shoulder charge but let's be honest they are the type that would complain if nothing was changed........ don't let the problems with Master chief collection turn you away from this game because it is as solid of a multiplayer experience as you could ask for

As a devote fan to the Halo series, I felt right at home with the latest installment titled Halo 5: Guardians. The graphics are outstanding! The game runs at a constant 60FPS on the Xbox One and was built from the ground-up for the next gen consoles. The gameplay is fluid and feels new, but maintains the classic Halo formula. The campaign includes a bigger emphasis on co-op play, especially with 4 players. Multiplayer is the big hit with a large variety of maps (including the new warzone gametype) and awesome server connectivity. I could not recommend this game enough.

While the campaign is lackluster, stricken by short cut-scenes and little insight into the new Halo lore, The multiplayer aspect hasn't felt this good since Halo 2, yeah I said it. The story seems to scratch the surface of how a Halo campaign should play out. Halo 5: Guardians does a very good job going through the motions of a Halo campaign, but lacks the spark that the predecessors had with exception to Halo 4. There are awe inspiring moments in which you get to enjoy how far this series has come, but these moments are few and far in between. The graphics are a technical marvel; the models look just as good as the cut-scene sequences in Halo: MCC done by BLUR. The game runs at a smooth 60 frames per second and an constantly shifting resolution. Do not worry, you won't be able to tell the difference. With this shifting resolution, it helps the game maintain it's buttery smooth 60 frames per second. Where the 60 frames per second seem to shine is the gameplay, and this cannot be shown better than in the multiplayer portion. The game plays like a dream. Session connect times are quick and less convoluted like we experienced in Halo: MCC. The introduction of the Warzone gametype really shakes things up, imagine firefight mixed with regular team slayer and domination from the CoD franchise as well as some MOBA aspects in it, crazy I know. Warzone is point based and the team who reaches the score of 1000 first wins, you kill the enemy team players to gain points and kill mini bosses and full fledged bosses to score even more points. The bosses range from basic enemy types to full on MMO raid bosses akin to Destiny. Alternatively you can capture bases to gain points, and if your team has control of all three bases you can directly attack the enemy's core which earns you a tide turning instant win. This is where the MOBA aspects kick in. Though the score is deducted a point because of the lackluster story, the multiplayer is where this game truly shines. It is a must have if you're a Halo fan and I would give it a try if you are into competitive multiplayer games.
