I've watched a lot of "B" rated movies. Some are good, where others fail. This movie was not even close to being interesting.

Overhyped but Worth Watching

I just finished watching "Hatchet" and I have to say that I enjoyed it, maybe more than expected. It certainly has its flaws in the acting, writing and pacing departments but the silly, over-the-top death sequences help to smooth over these bumps. It may be entirely possible that director and writer Adam Green really wanted the acting and writing to be that cheesy - to invoke an 80s slasher vibe that the movie and its fans seem to flaunt. I think there may have been too much effort in that department, though. I never really felt that I was watching an "80s in 00s" slasher or an homage to 80s backwoods slashers. It was nice to see Freddy, Candyman, and Jason although the former two are relegated to bit parts that don't serve them justice. It was also neat for me to notice Josh Leonard of "The Blair Witch Project" fame although I couldn't put my finger on him at first. He also appeared in a decent Outer Limits episode called "Gettysburg" as well! "Hatchet" also tries its hand at comedy and I found myself laughing a few times but quite a few jokes were off the mark. Maybe the movie would have been better with more black humor or even a self-aware sense a la "Behind the Mask" with references to former horror icons. On the other hand, maybe not. Still, I found the movie to be a serviceable, enjoyable and short ride, akin to a light brunch before a real heavy meal. I'm glad that I watched it but I am also glad that I didn't buy it at full price when it was first released.
I think people who enjoy this movie would also enjoy "2001 Maniacs" and probably "Slither". Still, in my mind, films in the same vein like "Behind the Mask" and "Dead Alive/Braindead" are better for their replay value.

I must admit that this movie was so silly that it was funny. The death scenes were very gory and sometimes too long. I must admit that Deon Richmond is a huge scene-stealer and he was hilarious! It was good to see the big horror kings of the 80's and 90's - Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, and Tony Todd have their appearances in the movie. I am sure that this movie is going to be the first in a series of horror flicks that could equal the immense popularity of Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Candyman. I would recommend this movie for big horror fans, but you don't need to cover your eyes with a pillow!

I was looking forward to this movie for years. Like many others, I saw the title and thought it was an adaptation of the book about the kid whose plane crashes and he has to live in the woods. Seconds later, I read that Kane Hodder was in it, and I was even more confused. Then, I find out it was a horror film and had nothing to do with the book. I was mildly interested at that point, but I got really excited when I read the first reviews over a year ago.
I waited, and then the film got a distributor. A while later, the film got an NC-17 rating and then was cut down to an R. Then, I found out it was being released theatrically, but it didn't show anywhere close to where I live. The DVD was then announced to come out just in time for Christmas.
After all this waiting, if the film wasn't great, it would be a huge disappointment. I'm happy to say that this is one of the best horror films of the decade and one of the best films of 2007.
The film doesn't really contain anything new, but it's so entertaining that it doesn't matter. The jokes are funny, and the characters are likable.
The unrated (NC-17-rated) cut does not disappoint. The kills are very bloody. I liked that a few of the kills had two parts to them or went on for a while -- for example, one death involves numerous hacks with a hatchet, whereas most other films would cut away after one hit.
I also appreciated the shots of blood splashing on trees and the shot of blood flying off the hatchet after it was pulled out of a victim. Also, the 360-degree shot before a character's death -- in addition to being necessary to creating the effect without CGI -- is simply cool.
The documentaries contained on the DVD are informative and lengthy. Highly recommended.

Old School Horror back to it's roots

Hello,
I've been watching movies for quite some time, and heard about this on the internet. I rented it first, and then needed to own it. It is an absolute gore/cheese fest- tongue in cheek throw back movie. Some old school horror actors make small appearances as a little treat too.
The story is your stereotypical group of people going where they shouldn't go- and all hell breaks loose when they encounter a new iconic villan in Victor Crowley. Give it a shot if you are in the mood for a funny, cheesey blood bath.

This is a good horror comedy, my wife and I thought it was pretty good! You're really just watching it for the gore and the killing. The plot is just a rip off of Friday the 13th. So, if you're looking for a film with a cheesy plot and lots of pointless killing and gore along with some good laughs, then you'll like this movie. Also, some similar slasher comedies are Just Buried, Otis, and Behind the Mask.

Just saw this one. This movie was made FOR HORROR FANS. This means a horror fan will enjoy the great fx, deaths, laughs and cameos and probably won't care about the things that aren't perfect. I'm pretty picky, and I would say some acting and dialogue was not great, but it might be somewhat intentional. It's made for fans of great horror movies, and those include some bad acting and dialogue. So if you like horror movies, I can't see you being disappointed. Great kills! Quality effects!

Very fun movie made especially for slasher movie fanatics. Harkens back to the old school classics like The Burning and Friday the 13th. VICTOR CROWLEY LIVES.

Hatchet is a great modern take on the classic 80's style horror movie. The kill scenes are inventive and brutal, and a quirky humor develops in the background of the story. This movie is sure to become the next great horror movie or horror movie series (like Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street) if the directors do make more! Definitely worth the buy!!!!

Skip the sequel but definitely check out this fantastic horror slasher from Adam Green. Full of inventive kills and some really funny moments, this was definitely made for genre fans by a genre fan. The Blu-Ray looks fantastic and has a really cool bonus commentary exclusive to the disc.

A lot of people told me to watch this film for a long time, and I finally decided to order it. I know its somewhat of a cult classic movie, but I just couldn't get into it. It seemed like it was trying too hard to be like a classic horror movie and threw some humor into it. I will admit there was some pretty cool kills in it, so I wouldn't say it's a terrible movie, I just wouldn't go straight for it when I'm looking for a horror film to watch.

Buy this if you want a comedy pretending to be a "horror" flick. There are some cool gore scenes, but they are few and far between. There are some classic horror greats in it though. Overall I was disappointed.
