There's good movies, there's bad movies, then there's campy movies, Hawk the Slayer definitely falls under campy... oh so campy. The entire movie is worth it just to watch Jack Palance ham it up as the evil brother Voltan. Voltan kills his and Hawk's father in search of a great power, one that is never mentioned again in the entire movie. Hawk is imbued with a sword that can magically show up in his hand, I'm sensing a disturbance in the Force with weapons "magically" being pulled toward the main character. Along the way, Hawk befreidns a warrior who in turn was in search of Hawk to help when his own village is ransacked and burned. Hawk then seeks to recruit old friends to aid in a quest, the Giant, the Elf, the Dwarf, the hobb... and they set out to take a mystical ring... I mean, save a nun who has been captured by Voltan and return her to their church. Yes, this particular sword and sorcery/fantasy movie has a very heavy catholic presence in it. There are nuns, churches, a priest, and lots and lots of praying to God. This wouldn't bother me so much except that magic and God do not exactly mesh well together, but I digress, you still have to remember just how hokey this movie is. The pacing of the movie is kind of up and down and the plot is just your basic, bland good vs. evil. Most of the characters are fairly 2-dimensional and forgetful, though some of the bantering between the giant and dwarf may get you a few smiles and maybe a laugh. Jack Palance seems to be the only one who was having fun and it really shows, he is just so out of place as in this movie. It would be like casting John Wayne to play Merlin. Fight scenes are hit or miss, using lots of cut scenes and off-camera tricks, you never really see anyone fully fighting and they rely heavily on repeating a scene that lasts only a split second to give you the feeling of an automatic crossbow and an elf that can fire arrows so fast that "you can't even see it". The music is pretty much "blah". It sounds like a mix of traditional instruments, like I'm pretty certain I heard some violins and flutes, but then it turns around and blasts your ears with high screeching synth music that just does not fit this type of movie. The tempo of the music in some scenes doesn't match up either, fast music in a slow scene, loud music when it should be soft, etc. Overall, not a terrible movie, but if you are wanting to watch something with friends that you can all laugh about, this is one to have

"Little men, with pointed ears. I shall trim them for you later!" (Voltan) There are some classic lines in this SWORD and sorcery adventure. Worth every penny.
