Love this TV. Originally had the 65” but exchanged it for the smaller 55” and am much happier. Picture is crystal clear, rivals OLED for sure. Fast and responsive. Deep blacks and good contrast. Sound quality is good, no perfect but clear.

This is a great TV for streaming and gaming. You just need to figure out the best calibration for you. I was also able to remap 3 buttons on the control. And added 6 more streaming services to those buttons. Also if you happen to have an Insignia TV remote, they happen work for this TV as well.

Two weeks before my two year warranty expired, my picture turned BLUE. Everyone became a Smurf. Best Buy Geek Squad said it was a Hisense issue, Hisense said they honor the first year, Total Tech should honor the second year. I’m canceling my Total Tech membership, too. By the time it was all said and done, I paid $800 for a tv that lasted 22 mos and NOBODY would accept responsibility for the warranty. I’ve had three Hisense televisions, but never again.

Bought this for gaming on my Xbox Series X. Configuration was a bit of a pain but got it working pretty good (very bright screen!). Unfortunately, after only 15 months the screen went bad! Hisense didn’t honor the 2 year warranty!! Said the internal screen was damaged and it was my fault!!

Hisense did a great job with the picture and the sound. I made a few adjustments with the motion enhancement setting and now the fast action NBA games has better motion. So I want to tell Hisense keep up the good work and thank you for adding the next gen TV tuner to the u8h.

This tv can get INSANELY BRIGHT. if that is what you need, insane brightness, then this is one of the best on the market. For organic looking picture, look elsewhere. this tv has a subtly unnatural look to it. its hard to describe exactly but it just looks off, no matter how i much change the settings. It also has bad color gradient banding and posterization, especially in game mode. it is insanely bad in game mode and introduces an odd shimmery look. In the first image, look to the left at the bands. its like this all over the place in any darker areas. it looks insanely bad at times. this example is Resident Evil 8 DLC. in the second image you can see the posterization. sorry these pictures are not amazing there is some artifacts introduced by my camera phone taking a picture of the screen. at times i was just looking at the image saying "what is going on"? The lab at the very beginng had insane artifacts from this banding, making it look like the walls were moving. i would not recommend this tv for gaming. it looked OK with Blu-Ray but nothing special. definitely better than a game, though. The brightness of this tv is NUTS. i turned the backlight down to 35 for most of the time i had it. the one that I bought also had horizontal bands and some less visible vertical bands of the dreaded DSE, or Dark Screen Effect. the so-called panel lottery, as they call it. this was the first TV ive owned that had this level of DSE right out of the box. I eventually returned the TV and got the Sony A9S OLED which was a similar price. it is WAY better even though it lacks HDMI 2.1 and is a smaller screen.

Hisense Makes More Sense Than Ever

When Hisense first launched their TV range in the US in the late 2000s, I dismissed the newly available brand as a super-budget, fly-by-night manufacturer that would be gone in just a few short years. Washed out panels, menus befitting an early 1990s CRT, and flimsy construction quality were my initial impressions that stuck for a long time…until I got my first Hisense TV in 2019. Within a decade, Hisense turned completely around and floored me with a bright and vivid panel, a feature set that high-end TVs struggled to match, and a price that undercut the competition. Hisense committed to quality improvement in the long term and it certainly paid off - many of the other brands that popped up in the early LCD TV era have since pulled out of the US market, merged into equally obscure popup brands, or folded entirely. The new U8 TV range is near the top of Hisense’s offerings - just one step below the U9DG - and sits at the upper midrange of TVs at their size class, if not just a step below truly high-end TVs. Building upon the ULED technology powering their sets since the U6 line, the U8 adds mini-LED technology that purports to increase peak brightness and provide local dimming and contrast closer to OLED TV performance, at a much more affordable price. The result is another Hisense TV that stuns at its typical prices, delivering visual clarity and color depth to compete at the high end with features that cinephiles and gamers alike will love. - Unboxing and Setup Hisense recommends having an assistant to complete setup as TVs of this size can be difficult to handle alone. I was able to complete the task on my own as the steps are simple and the U8 weighs no more than an older 55 inch LCD TV, but it would have made the process much quicker. The U8 is packaged very well-protected, encased in styrofoam with a large and thick screen protector at the front, and thus should endure all but the roughest handling by freight and parcel carriers. A set of plastic clips secure the packaging around the TV and release easily to allow the cardboard box to lift up and over the TV (watch for the ceiling). The included feet attach easily to their indents on the bottom of the TV and are keyed to avoid swapping legs inadvertently. Alternatively, VESA mounts on the rear can be used for wall-mounting. With the updated U8H line, Hisense has *finally* addressed the outdated TV operating system by moving from Android TV to the much-improved Google TV. At first power-on, Google TV makes setup a breeze for Google Home users - an onscreen QR code gives Google Home all the information it needs to automatically configure local network settings, apps and preferences, and related data stored on a Google account. Within minutes I was up and running, appreciating just how much snappier and better optimized Google TV is over Android TV. I had no issues with slowdown when installing updates in the background, which was almost unbelievable as the onboard hardware is spec’d more like a budget smartphone than a high-end streaming box. - Connectivity & Control The U8H departs from previous Hisense TV offerings by splitting its HDMI capabilities. Of the four inputs, only two (HDMI 3 + 4) are HDMI 2.1 compatible to accept a 4K 120Hz signal, while the other two are HDMI 2.0a and will only accept 4K 60Hz signals. HDMI 3 supports eARC for controlling a compatible sound system using the TV’s volume control. A TV tuner with coaxial input allows for over-the-air broadcasts without the need for a separate breakout box. Hisense also continues their tradition of supporting a composite input through a 3.5mm combination pole jack, but it appears they no longer include the 3-in-1 cable that was usually packed in with their sets, mandating a separate (quite cheap, but still annoying) purchase to use. I suspect this is an increasingly niche use case in the modern era, however, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the input phased out within a year or two. The rear USB port supplies half an amp of power while the side port provides 1 amp, perfect for powering an antenna amplifier directly from the TV or connecting an external storage device respectively. The TV’s audio output is mirrored through an optical port that supports Dolby Digital (bitstream) and Dolby DTS. For internet and wireless connectivity, an ethernet jack complements the WiFi 6e and Bluetooth 5.0 onboard. WiFi 6 allows for far better streaming quality with minimum latency, and I’m glad that Hisense upgraded the WiFi chip in the U8 series to support. A single power button situated under the TV and just the right of center allows for input switching and power options without the need for the remote. - Picture & Sound Quality 1500 nits peak brightness and 336 dimming zones are incredible metrics to have at this price and size class. Though numbers alone don’t tell the full story, they certainly tell you Hisense means business, and this panel just continually blows me away. This is the part where I’d usually mention how the Hisense TV gets close but doesn’t quite reach the picture quality and performance of flagship sets a generation or two old, but that for the money it punches well above its weight. With the U8H, however, Hisense is now competing with all other manufacturers’ current top offerings in the LED TV space. The MiniLED technology is what seems to be driving this forward as I also have one of last year’s U6G models, which utilizes the same ULED technology as the U8H but predates MiniLED. The end result is a screen that literally lights up the room by comparison, with nearly 3x the peak brightness of the U6 while retaining all of that set’s color clarity while adding a 120Hz panel and more than quintupling the local dimming zones on tap. The image presets out of the box do a great job balancing power draw against motion smoothness and ease-of-use, but I found HDR Standard was best for video content and Game/HDR Game best for, well, gaming (and computer monitor usage - more at the end of this section). In these modes, color reproduction is pretty much spot-on, and Standard (along with most modes) allows for a wider range of post-processing enhancements to be configured, such as motion smoothing and contrast enhancement. Game removes most effects and presents the signal as quickly and unmodified as possible, resulting in the most accurate picture to my eyes. As is befitting of a high-end set, there’s no color banding or bleed present anywhere as far as I can tell. Hisense has continually improved their local dimming capabilities and algorithm, and on the U8 line it seems they’ve perfected it. I went hunting as best I could for the characteristic “glow” or halo effect you often get with lower quality dimming but needed to push some extreme scenarios for it to be noticeable. Black levels are similarly excellent, with unlit zones getting so dark I couldn’t tell the TV was on when I filled the screen with a perfectly black image and any light source in the room (even a dim one) turned on. They’re not at OLED levels, but without sitting down to really look for it you could be fooled. With a 120Hz panel, you’d expect that both input lag and motion blur are significantly improved over 60Hz offerings, and no surprise the same applies here, at least on the 55U8H. Gaming with this TV is a dream when using a high refresh capable console (or a PC in my case). It may be placebo but it does feel like the U8H is a little quicker on the controls than the U6G I’m comparing against, and in motion it looks much clearer as fast-moving objects blur far less than before. Sadly, 4K HDR @ 120Hz is beyond the capabilities of any of my machines, but I do like having what’s essentially a “future-proof” set of inputs to push the screen into overdrive when those devices land in my home. The U8H’s biggest surprise is not just the inclusion of built-in speakers - a feature that’s usually an afterthought to begin with - but an included subwoofer on the rear of the TV attempts to address the tinny, weak sound quality that modern TV sets often provide without an external sound system. I wasn’t expecting much here, but I came away floored at just how crisp and clear the built-in speakers are. The bass is actually audible if not particularly deep or boomy, and the treble is fairly well controlled. At one-third volume the speakers fill the room well, but once you’re above two-thirds you’re running into distortion. I would argue the 55U8H makes a good case for skipping out on entry-level soundbars, which is not something I expected to write about any TV. Though not DisplayHDR certified (as this is generally reserved for monitors while TVs are largely manufacturer-reported), I would put this screen on par with my HDR600-certified PC monitor. Performance is a little worse in terms of ghosting and overshoot, but unless I’m going for competitive gaming specifically, I would be perfectly content using the U8 as a PC monitor. Be advised, though, that the subpixel layout on the screen is B-G-R while most PCs expect R-G-B, which can lead to some issues with font smoothing. - Bottom Line I have very little I dislike about this TV. The Hisense 55U8H is a phenomenal TV no matter how you cut it, and worthy of consideration not just against its similarly priced competition, but against the segment leaders’ flagships as I just don’t think there’s much of a compromise being made. Unless you absolutely must have OLED technology in your TV, this set gets shockingly close for shockingly less. With the U8H line, Hisense has now proven themselves to be a compelling and competitive brand in higher-end segments where, just a couple years ago, they were still the “budget” offering. No more - they’ve earned their spot on the TV wall at your local Best Buy. Highly recommended!

This TV seemed like it was going to be the best fit for my needs. I should've returned it the moment it got loaded in the vehicle because the box was a bit rough, but I work for another retailer in the Electronics Department, so I know how some of these items come in. Took it home opened it and noticed that the bags the feet were in are open. I was kind annoyed because I thought I got sold a returned TV. Everything else was fine even the plastic on the screen wasn't touched. Well, I get it set up and powered on the tv and it was stuck in Chinese. That's another point where I should've returned it, but I used Google Translate and got the tv set back to English. After all that the tv was fine and working just fine, but just a few days after I was out of the return window the tv started having color banding issues and I could see lines in the background that were the separation of the local dimming zones. Turns out that the 55" of this line is bad in general after looking up how to fix any of these issues. I did setting tweaks, factory resets, and made sure the firmware was up to date. So, now I'm dealing with Hisense to try and get a replacement or my money back.

Worst Tv issues EVERRR! Sound consistently but randomly cut out and needed to be unplugged to reset and get it working again. Not to mention some sort of flashing pixelation issue across the whole bottom Of the screen during certain dark/black/color scenes! Hisense customer service was little to no help saying update and if it doesnt work it needed to be reapired.. Luckily I noticed all of this within the 15 day return policy and did not get stuck dealing with this. Its really a shame bc with some color adjustment it can blow your face off and the built in subwoofer was a really nice touch! Guess it wasnt meant to be!
