Odd combination of tones with drama, horror, action, and comedy, but overall very satisfying.

If you can deal with the dubbing of English,this is a really well made monster movie. I enjoyed it.

The Movie: The Host is a fantastic South Korean film which is easy to go into with the wrong expectations. It looks like a horror-monster film, with a creature terrorizing a small city and the people must rise to stop it. Well, that is in the film, but it's much more than that. It focuses on a family and their troubles with each other and the outside world, and in this case the outside world includes a creature born from toxic chemicals poured down the drains at an American army base (don't let that worry you, the movie is not preachy or anti-American). Despite the premise, the film has many comedic moments which translate much better than the humor I've seen in other Asian films and I don't think will be off putting to anyone. The Disc: The blu-ray comes with a fantastic sounding Korean audio track, and it is truly top quality. Both DTS-HD MA and PCM tracks are included. The subtitles are fine and completely readable and understandable. And English dub is present as well, but I recommend skipping it because too much of the film's enjoyment rests in the performances. Even though this is an early blu-ray release, the picture quality holds up very well and is one of the better looking imports I've seen, about on par with other releases by this company like I Saw The Devil. The extras are plentiful enough for anyone wanting to dig deeper into the film, including a great commentary, however there are a few things left off that were on the 2-disc DVD edition. Their exclusion is disappointing. Overall, it's easy to recommend this release, as long as you don't mind subtitles and are open to something a little different.

that line on the cover sets expectations way to high. its a solid movie but if you put a jaws comparison in the viewers head before he watches it, it better be a masterpiece.

If you enjoy horror movies - you have to see The Host!! This is cheesy horror at it's best!! Seriously, the special effects are AMAZING; the plot is superb for a horror movie; acting is passable, the little girl steals the movie. This is a Korean made movie, so the whole thing is dubbed in English, mostly with hilarious results, but that really adds to the movie's charm and surprisingly doesn't detract from the scariness. I first rented this movie as a joke, but my whole family loved it, and I was thrilled to find it on Blu-ray.

See where the director of Parasite (can't get his name in this review because it triggers Best Buy's censors) started with this off-kilter but incredibly entertaining monster/horror film. For long time fans of his, the current attention being paid to Parasite comes as no surprise.

Definitely not the type of movie we are used to watch, but it is its uniqueness, and it's tone what makes it so enjoyable. The quality of the CGI used in the movie, specially the monster is not great, but oddly enough it adds up with the entire tone of the movie

Not just a good film but one of the best monster films ever made. The visual effects are great paired with an action-packed plut that never lets up until it's end. Definitely check this one out!
