Customers praise the 15.6" Laptop for its great value, user-friendly interface, and powerful Quad Core processor that even makes gaming enjoyable. While some users find Windows 8.1 to be unfamiliar and the battery life to be average, overall, customers are pleased with this laptop.

This laptop performs fairly well. Occasionally needs to be rebooted after many browser tabs have been opened because of slow responsiveness.

This is a fairly good, basic laptop for general use. I was tired of watching my wife and kids fight over the "family" laptop so I thought I'd give this a try and it's pretty good; understanding it's a low-end laptop.
A couple of things you should know that are not on the specs page: this laptop includes a DVD+/-RW drive #mine seems to get a little bit of friction stick if sitting on a flat table - I have to lift the right side a little to get the tray to pop out#. That 4GB of RAM is in just one SODIMM; there's a cover on the bottom with access to both SODIMM slots and one is empty. So you don't have to throw away 2GB of RAM to upgrade. Both of these are great for a low-end laptop! Replacing the hard drive with an SSD is a nice idea but that is pretty major surgery on this model.
Personally I didn't stick with Windows for very long. It was slow, but modern Windows just is. Made my recovery DVDs #6 required# and got Linux on there. Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon 64-bit installed fairly easily. You have to go into the BIOS and disable Secure boot and enable legacy and CD-ROM boot to get the Mint install done. The only thing missing from the install was native video drivers, which needed to be downloaded and installed from AMD. Mint is much, much lighter and faster than Windows - and more secure to boot. 6 months #IIRC# of McAfee LiveSafe is pre-installed on the laptop. McAfee does not have a stellar reputation for either speed or for accuracy but this last version seems to be improved over years past. You'll probably get 6 months of something for free as well with the laptop purchase; I picked Kaspersky but again - not running Windows. HP did not seem to go overboard on junk bundle-ware; just the usual few.
The keyboard and touchpad are decent. If sticking with Windows #even for the short time I had it, I...# I'd install Classic Shell and disable edge swiping for the touchpad. I'm not crazy about the island keys but that seems to be all that's done nowadays. Wish they'd added an LED num lock indicator like they do for the caps lock. I also wish the power LED on the top lit up but there's one on the side and the nice touch of a HDD activity LED - too often missing on low-end laptops. The screen resolution is typical of cheap laptops but clear and easily readable; honestly for those of us on the wrong side of 40 ultra-resolution screens seem a bit of overkill. I wish it wasn't a glossy screen #it's not a touch screen# but again, that's the way they seem to make them all any more. Don't expect to do any high-end gaming but you should already know that at this price point. Wireless is also 2.4GHz only and no Bluetooth; also to be expected at this price. Although the wireless card is under the same cover as the RAM and easily accessible, apparently HP likes to blacklist all but a short list of HP-branded wireless cards so upgrading may prove logistically difficult.
Build quality seems decent, other than the DVD sticking issue on mine #maybe not common, and I really don't consider it a big deal#. Not much flex or creak to the chassis and it feels solid. The plastic feels a little cheap to the skin but at least it's fairly resistant to fingerprints. It's no ultrabook but It's pretty impressively thin and light considering the 15.6" screen and price, too. That lightness extends to the battery, which weighs in at a mere 6 oz. And that's the main reason why I'll deduct a star - because the battery seems to be good for only 2 hours typical, maybe 3 at best under light use. The included brick is only 45W and is also light and easy to carry around though.

I was hesitating to buy another laptop after I had my first one for so long, but the salesman reassured me by going above and beyond to find this charm for me. Great product I'm always for HP products!

I've had this laptop over a month now and have not had any problems. It is very thin and light. So far it hasn't even heated up like my old laptop. Very quiet. I use it mainly for browsing the net. I'm not a fan of windows 8, but I'm learning to live with it. That would be my only complaint about this computer.

Bought as a backup to use when my AMD-A10 was down. This AMD-A8 is only fair for gaming but is acceptable for the internet. The display is slightly disappointing. I like that they have moved the power input to the other side but surprised to learn that there was no VGA output. Used a HDMI to DVI adaptor. Overall, very good value for the price I paid as a backup/second computer.
