Replacing the ram stick with 2 Vengeance 8g sticks helped but the video card is too weak to even try a game other than roblox... the red backlight on keyboard is the best part unfortunately

I bought this new laptop mostly because my old laptop was ~6 years old and slowly running out of steam. I needed something that would be light weight for commuting to school, but heavy duty enough to play games that required a bit more power than the average laptop. I've had this laptop for a few months now and it has been running very smoothly. The 128 GBs of SSD really makes my day since load times for games have never been shorter in my life.
My only complaints would be not being able to adjust the hotkeys like my previous laptop (why is F1 a help button? How many people fly enough to need a hotkey for airplane mode?), and that the fans are extremely loud when playing games. The small up/down arrow keys can make that part awkward to use, and the touchpad is a little too far to the left (or too large?), since my right hand often accidentally swipes on it while typing.

I did my research before purchasing this computer, out of all of the options I felt this one had the best balance.
After using the computer for a while-
Pros: Hard drive is lightning fat, less than 10 seconds to boot up. Decent battery for doing most things.
Cons: heats up pretty good, but not bad in the front. Fan is a bit noisy. Even with its stats, had issues with games.
I would still recommend it because of the value and I only use it for casual gaming. Has newest i7 processor so an upgrade is not required for a little while.

Honestly , this is one powerful machine . I am new to PC gaming , but I can see how powerful this machine is ! It's super fast and runs most games I throw at it on high settings I.e Skyrim and overwatch run smooth like butter . Battery life is great when using for normal use such as hw or videos, but most definitely keep plugged to outlet for gaming . Everything about this lap top amazes ! Highly recommend this to anyone looking for an affordable and powerful rig . Very happy with my purchase

For the money this laptop is fantastic for gaming. No gimmicks here- the inclusion of the 960M is what makes it a powerhouse. For fast, high quality 1080p games it has been wonderful. Even recording in 1080p surprised me.
Build quality is solid and the backlit keyboard is a nice touch that you see in more expensive laptops. I was surprised to see the i7 and GPU push decent FPS in Battlefield 4, Fallout 4, and a big CPU hog in a 1mil+ unit Factorio map.
If I had to list a negative it would be a very minor one: the material used on the exterior is very much like a chalkboard. Gets scuffs easily but they clean up just as fast.
Disk speed is decent for the drive, Windows boots almost as fast as my high end desktops. The TN panel is bright and the colors have nominal bleed. Very slight LED bleed but who are we kidding, the laptop is the best bang for your wallet if you're primarily gaming. Haven't used it unplugged to play games but the battery seems to hold up during travel when I use it to manage my DSLR on the go. HP has its hits and misses and this one is a hit.

I recently had my custom built Toshiba get run over by a car ( long story don't ask). I was in the need for a powerful laptop.
I do a lot of audio video editing and did a ton of research on the best laptop to use. This Hp Omen would have been great out of the box but I had 16 GB of ballistic ram and a Samsung 850 Pro from my old machine. With the ability to add the second drive I have been able to run Pro tools, Power Director, Photo shop and Light room at the same time with no issues. The only thing I can say is that I wish the keyboard backlight was adjustable rather than just on and off.

I got this laptop a year ago now and let me start by saying, the boot time, out of this world! From a cold start its takes less than 15 seconds for me to be surfing the web! Thats with me putting in my password! This laptop is blazing fast and handles everything from video editing, surfing the web, to photoshop like a champ! HP is killing the game with the Omen line! Super happy with the purchase!

I purchased this laptop because I wanted something that I could game on for a reasonable price. The specs on this are great for the price and I have had no issues with performance. Games run fast, but I haven't tried any brand new AAA games since I use my PS4 for most new games.
The build quality is decent, it's relatively light and slim for the kind of hardware inside it. The trackpad is definitely the worst part of this laptop and very noticeably bad if you're used to MacBooks like me. It takes a lot of force to click, so I usually just tap-to-click and that works fine. It gets the job done and you get used to it after a while.
The screen is also pretty lackluster. It is 1080p and has a matte screen but it doesn't get very bright. The colors are pretty dull. I've read that the refresh rate is pretty slow for a gaming PC but I haven't noticed if that's the case. If you're someone who wants to use v-sync then take note.
The keyboard is nice and I like the colors but if the backlight is turned off it's very difficult to read the keys since the text is dark red on top of black. There's also no brightness settings for the backlight, just on or off. If you don't like red this laptop is not for you.
Overall I'm happy with my purchase because it does what I want for under $1000.

This gaming laptop, while not the strongest, does exactly what I need it to. Play games at medium or better settings without taking a hit to performance, and general school use purposes. Only complaint is that the logo on the top seems to be peeling after only a month of careful usage, and it can run a bit loud and hot at times. All in all, a great purchase!

Well-rounded Laptop for a College Student

This laptop has been amazing for me. The computer is great since I can both game a bit and get through my college classes with great speeds. I added an 8 GB stick of RAM in addition to the 8 GB it already came with. For an i7 and gtx 960 laptop, the computer has quite a really good battery life. Doing school work, I can get about a minimum of 5 hours. Gaming, the computer reaches about 2-3 hours, which I'd strongly recommend playing with the charger plugged in to get the most out of the machine. Obviously you have to adjust the power settings to get the most ideal power plan to last the longest but at that point it is just preference.
Overall, very enjoyable machine to have !

I am not going to spend this review complaining about the 2016 HP Omen's build quality or form like some others have. A gaming laptop at such a great price point had to be designed to be affordable in some areas and thus the plastic feel of the thing and a couple of its other quirks don't bother me. Alas, I am very sad about this laptop as there is one major quirk that is more than bothering me.
To cut to the chase before I go on about some of the more subjective issues I had with the laptop, the fan system does not appear to be reliable. The Best Buy geeks are bewildered by what could be the matter, but I have owned it less than a month in a clean environment and the fans are now whirling up with sever crunching and rubbing sounds during cold starts and gaming in my 70 degree-average temperature room. Websites I have visited have suggested that the tolerances could be off or there could be issues with dust, but none of that adds up when considering I have only had the laptop for one month. I am an average gamer (1-2 hours a day 3 to 5 days out of the week) and only use it for internet browsing and Microsoft Office applications otherwise.
It could just be that mine is a lemon, but if it weren't for the holiday return promise at Best Buy, I would be stuck with a thousand dollar laptop with fans failing after a month of use relying on sketchy warranties to cover it. Fans should be a lot more reliable than this considering this laptop line from HP is aimed at gamers. I had it suggested to me that I should exchange it for another one, but I am not going to.
On the subject of fans, this laptop's fans are loud and they are on way more than what would be necessary in a better designed laptop. When I say this I understand thermodynamics and the need for forced convection to enable the internal components to cool down and stay at safe temperatures, but these fans are seemingly always on, and it is aggravating. I am not a picky guy, I have owned laptops ranging in price from $300.00 to $1799.99 and I have almost always been content with the device for the duration of my ownership until my next upgrade. But this Omen intermittently runs the fans like it is trying to repel a swarm of homicidal wasps away from a group of frightened children when I am doing little more than some Word processing or internet browsing. I have owned other gaming laptops that are even smaller and they manage to keep the fans from interrupting your everyday tasks while still keeping your system cool. Some brands like Razer and MSI even have software that allows you to select fan settings to keep it quieter when the situation calls for it. I found no such settings for this laptop, but if there are settings available please comment as to how this is done for the sake of other potential and current HP Omen owners. I am no computer sleuth, but the excessive amount of time the fans have spent at max speed under normal use seems like it would be a contributing factor in their recent failure in my unit.
Aside from the fans, I found this to be a nice device for the price. I do my research before I buy new electronics and everything I read about this laptop made it seem like it would be just right for my purposes. There are a lot more people who have had great success with this laptop than there are who have not, so the decision to buy it is all your own. My concluding recommendation for this decision though is when you get this laptop pay VERY close attention to its quirks, sounds, personal feel to you, etc. Best Buy has a great return policy if you are within the time period allotted by your membership level and I urge you to follow your instincts and listen to your gut if you are feeling like this isn't the one. Also, know what the warranty covers and be prepared with your device's information, purchase info, etc. in the event that you should have to submit a claim. I hope this review helps, I don't like the useless complaining that a lot of reviews are composed of and I am genuinely trying to be helpful. Leave a comment if you have any questions or concerns and I will be happy to reply when I have time. Good luck finding the laptop for you!

I'd given up on pc's for a while, I'd been given a mac and was worried that I'd have issues going back to it. I have to say, this is an AMAZING laptop. It's obviously much better suited for gaming, it works fast, pleasant design, lots of storage, graphics are stunning. The cons are really only it's a little big so it won't fit in a standard laptop compartment in a backpack or so, and it's mousepad really sucks. But you can just use a wireless mouse for everyday stuff if it bugs you or a controller for games.

If you want one of the best value gaming laptops in the $1000 range, this is certainly one of them.
Pro: Will handle most video games such as GTA 5 PC on med-high settings with the right options, and achieve 60fps to 80fps, and 100fps in some areas. on 1080p
Con: Fan can get a little noisy. Recommended to install additional ram to provide memory breathing room for gaming to minimize stutters in- game. Not perfect but it will more than get you by if you want to save money.

We bought this computer for my son, who needed an affordable device that could handle all his advanced school needs for years to come but could also handle online gaming and advanced graphics. This computer has not disappointed us yet. Set-up was smooth, and the speed is great. Graphics are unbelievable.

This is my first gaming laptop and it does what I need it to do, playing games. Design is sleek and not too heavy, yet solid enough that I trust won't break as easily. Only real downside is the graphics card, can't upgrade that to my knowledge and I have a few games that I had to tone down in order for it to play at optimal speeds. Overall though I am pleased with this laptop.

I bought this computer for a gaming rig over a deployment to Afghanistan. The hardware works mostly as expected, running slightly older games at high settings. The downsides are the fan misaligned and required repair, the screen hits the keyboard bezel and scratches easily and the system gets exceptionally hot with moderate work loads.
