Refurb? Not even bench tested!

In general, I have good luck with refurbs, but I have ordered and returned 2 of these things. The first one, there was picture for a fraction of a second, then the screen went blank. Thinking it was a fluke, I returned it and ordered a replacement. Same thing. EXCEPT...this one had a bluray disk still in it from the previous owner!!! That tells me that Best Buy/Insignia didn't refurbish this thing...they didn't even look at it before plunking it into a new box and shipping it out to me! So, to whomever is missing a Robin Hood disk, THANKS! It is now my consolation prize.
If you are willing to keep ordering different ones until you find a working one, it may be worth it for the price, but otherwise buyer beware.

Audio quit working after 3 days.

Initially everything went fine. Bought it with anticipation of buying HDTV in the next couple of weeks, and price was right (deal of day at $59.99). Set-up was easy and connected to wireless and Netflix without trouble. On an old TV, it is very hard to read the on screen instructions and wording. After three days, the audio quit, just giving white noise. Checked all connections, which were OK. I unplugged the unit, and replugged in back in. It then worked again fine, but when I turned it off and back on, again no audio. It goes back to store the first of the week. My married daughter also purchased one on the "deal of the day", and it is running fine, so I got the lemon. I tried to go cheap, and lost. First time I've had a refurbished product break right away.

For the price - decent Blu-Ray with features

I bought two of these on the Best Buy Deal of the Day. One works great and the other I seem to have an issue with Pandora (music is choppy), but I have not spent much time troubleshooting. I highly recommend NOT upgrading the firmware when you setup the unit. I did this on one and it completely messed up everything. Had to go the Insignia Support page, download the previous firmware to a USB drive and plug into unit to re-install previous firmware.
As far as the remote, who cares, it is a remote and it works.
If you want a nice Blu-Ray for a Home Theater, spend a few extra bucks and go with a brand name. My other unit is a LG BD570 which has been flawless since I have owned it.
For the money and features (built-in WiFi and applications) this is a good entry level Blu-Ray player. Good luck finding another brand name model for this price. Hope this helps.

A basic BD player but not very good even then

My experience with refurbished items has been very good. I purchase PC's for my office and have purchased several refurbished ones that we are very pleased with. The Insignia brand is good for a "house brand" and I figured BB would know how to refurbish since in-store service is highly touted. Unfortunately, this unit met none of my expectations. When playing BD about two-thirds of the way through the movie the unit would just stop and would not allow me to search for the chapter to restart. It would only replay from the beginning. Imagine how frustrating that is after watching for 2 hours and missing the ending! After many failed attempts to connect by wifi, including going into my router for special settings, I hard-wired the unit and downloaded the firmware update. This finally helped with the BD function but did nothing for the wireless capability. I watch Netflix and listen to Pandora now that it's hardwired but still hold my breath when watching disks. This unit has given me more than $100 worth of frustration; I wish I had spent the $150 for a new name-brand model so I could be writing a more positive review.

Acceptable player for my needs.

After owning for nine months, this player is acceptable for playing old DVD movies and the 5 blu-ray movies I own. I primarily use it to access Netflix, Cinema Now, and Pandora programming which cam with it and it works well. Like most complaints, the setup was challenging. The player immediately recognized my router but did not synchronize when I put in my WPA encryption code. As I note above I had to perform a hard reset of my router and that worked. The Insigna Help desk to me this player only works with WEP encryption but I have not found that to be the case. The firmware updates I have made downloaded with no problems. Did not have to reset my router again.
This is my first and only blu-ray player so I can't compare it to other brands. Since I have Apple TV I will not be buying another blu-ray or media player again. Only reason I would not recommend to a friend is because I would suggest buying Apple TV or the likes. Just a note, I am somewhat Tech savvy and like figuring out problems so If you are not a patient person this may not be the player for you.

Didn't quite make it a year

For the price, not too bad for a year's worth of service I guess. After about 6 month the panel stopped working and all commands had to go through the remote. After 11 months, Blu-Ray discs would not work at all. The 12-month Insignia warranty does not apply on refurbs. Replaced it with a well-reviewed Sony this time

OK as a secondary player

Bought the refurb to serve as a back-up player in the man cave for when I was watching sports or son playing XBox on the main TV so could watch Netflix on the secondary TV. The wireless couldn't connect to the router, perhaps because of the basement location, and even the wired connection struggled using a Netgear box. I finally moved it upstairs closer to the router and moved a Panasonic player to the cave, which connected easily using the Netgear box.Upstairs the wireless connects, although the bulit-in dongle flashes somewhat annoyingly in back while in operation. Another annoying distraction is the streaming of the site across the player display while in operation. Picture-wise, streaming content and discs are fine. A cheap back-up, but spend a little more for a prime time player.

Just don't buy it!!!

I read the reviews and thought I would take a chance that I would get one that, well, worked! Nope, wrong! I had it one day... ONE DAY! The password for the wifi is laborious to enter, and then, on its own whim, would just disconnect itself and forget the password. I entered it 7 times. yes, I up graded the internal firmware. Nothing worked. I then put in my second movie, and that was it. Now it won't turn on and I cant get the borrowed disc out of the drawer, as it won't open. There is no reset button. Just avoid the time wasted and heartache of having to waste your time and energy on this P.O.S. If I can help one person avoid this product, I will sleep better.

We bought this for my son's room because his DVD player finally died after about 7 years. I figured I didn't need to spend a lot of money on one for him because he is just a kid. I was wrong. This thing is horrible. If I was only using it for Netfilx it would be awesome but it will not play most DVD's and will freeze when playing Blu-ray discs and the only way to unfreeze it is by turning the player off. I would check this discs to see if they were dirty or scratched and they were not, then I would put them in another player in the house and they would work fine. It has been over the 30 days and now I am stuck with the thing and frustrated. I called best buy to have them send a pick up and they said I had to take it to the store and I just didn't have the time for that due to severe family illnesses, if I had the time to go into a store I would not have bought it online.

Stopped working after firmware upgrade

Picked this cheap player up and was amazed at how well it worked. Blu-Rays were very sharp and the DVD upscaling worked great. I was very happy with it.
Then, after slow load times on one Blu-Ray I decided to try plugging in the internet and updating the firmware to the newest version. The player turned itself off during the install and will not turn on again. Insignia's customer support is worthless and judging by the discussion board on their site, they do not address problems with their products. So now after only owning it less than 2 months, I have to toss it and go with a more expensive Sony or Samsung, which I will buy from Costco or someplace with a return policy. Lesson learned...buy cheap, pay the price.

Ordered this on-line and free shipped to my home. Very fast services. Very easy to set it up, connected to Home internet through the built-in Wi-Fi. Registered Netflix only a few clicks. Also updated the system software without any issues like other review said. It is very worth it with this price.

We have had this Blu_ray player for almost two years now and I HATE IT!!! It constantly says Network Connection Unavailable so you have to go to settings and reclick on EVERYTHING 2x to 5x until it finally works. THEN you can only use Netflix, Cinema Now, or Pandora -.- This thing is now sitting in our bedroom. I am much happier with our PS3.
Whatever you do DON'T BUY THIS THING!!!
Or anything else Insignia for that matter...

By far the worst electronic purchase!

I had purchased this blu ray player just after purchasing my Insignia television. I was happy with the T.V.. But this blu ray player...just terrible. At first, I thought that the blu ray movies I was purchasing were all defective until I came to the realization that it was actually the player. Takes up to 15 mintues to load a movie, stops playing during the movies to the point where I have to start playing from the beginning, pauses and freezes up during a movie...etc., etc. BOTTOME LINE: DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

I am not a technology snob but this is honestly the worst DVD player ever. I purchased it as one of the daily deals and initially was excited that I could easily stream Netflix to my tv. While the connection was.l.o.w, it did work. I'd say it took between 1 to 2 minutes after choosing a show and before playing on my tv. Then, I started getting this 'invalid format' messages where I couldn't get any screen to show--not the dvd menu or even the player setup screen. I brought it into the store and Geek Squad was able to get a screen and didn't see the invalid format. So I bring it home and it works again. Then, I get the message again so I unplug and then plug back it--it worked. Now, the uplug/replug method no longer works and this is being returned, which I find to be a hassle! I would absolutely NOT recommend this product for anyone!

I have two of these for two different rooms I watch movies in. I like the sleek look and buttonless feature.
I would ONLY buy this product if you also purchase the Black Tie protection plan. I did have one of my players recently stop responding to touch as well as the remote. I took it back and got credit, several months after purchase, no questions asked.
The reason why I am giving it a high rating still, because I believe MOST electronics WILL have problems in a short amount of time.
Before I bought two of these, I had an LG (I replaced twice in 30 days) and also a Sony (I returned it after 3 hours).
So far, this one has lasted the longest! It looks super nice, but the remote is ghetto. I also paid $300 for another player, and that remote was ghetto as well, so it doesn't really matter.
In fact, I am TERRIFIED to buy electronics anywhere other than Best Buy for the protection plans. I bought a huge LG plasma and the panel went out after 2 years (got it replaced, no questions asked) and I also a Sony Bravia 3D LED tv, and it went out after 4 months! If I didn't have the protection plan, I would have ate all the money I spent PLUS been without a tv.
I felt like I have had an unfair string of bad luck, but this is how it is folks. They make them, to break them. Take advantage while good protection plans last,

This thing is garbage. constantly losing audio for no reason. picture aspect ratio is oddly out of sync with source. it's just complete garbage. yes, it was inexpensive at only $100 when I bought it, but it's been nothing but a nightmare. slow to get to ANYTHING playable, whether it's a DVD, Blu-Ray, or CinemaNow(don't even get me started with this junk on demand service). it's just a waste of money. spend the extra $50 and get something decent.

I bought this same product new for my living room b/c of the value for the wi-fi and it works great and we have had it a year so I thought I would give the refurb a chance for our bedroom. I figured it was worth the risk for the price and in my experience Best Buy has always been good about returning a product that does not work. The first one did not have any audio unless played through HDMI but our bedroom TV does not have it and the component picture would not work. Best Buy mailed us another one and this one worked for a couple of days and then the audio went on this unit also.

I noticed the subpar ratings for this unit, and felt compelled to express my experience with this player. I currently have two of this Insignia model blu-ray players. The first player was purchased over a year ago. I bought the player for a secondary movie room. This unit was quickly moved into the living room. First, the wireless connection was a breeze. I use netflix heavily, and wifi connection and picture quality are essential. I have a Samsung blu-ray player that I paid $200 for, and is around two years old. This Insignia model is better in every way. The picture quality is excellent. The wifi connection is a breeze, and streaming quality is on par with both my PS3 and Sony 3D wifi built-in player. I loved the Insignia so much, that I bought a refurbished model for my girlfriend over 6 months . She loves it, and it works great. I have decided to throw away my lackluster Samsung for this refurbished Insignia. This unit performs better than one you can purchase for 3x the price. Don't be scared by the refurbished tag. This is still a quality product.
