Interesting musical version of some fairy tales

The movie takes several fairy tales (e.g., Cinderella, Jack & the Bean Stalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel), relates them through a central plot line, and embellishes them through acting, dialogue and musical scores. The acting is good, much of the dialogue is clever and witty, and the musical scores range from OK to very good.

I thought that it was a pretty good movie. I heard a lot of complaining from friends that there was a lot of singing and they didn't expect there to be. I'm not sure they seen the same previews that I did. lol. I loved all the singing personally. All three of my kids who's ages range from 3 - 8 liked it and ask to watch it quite often.

Rob Marshall's film adaptation of the Sondheim/Lapine stage classic is a good introduction of the material. A game cast brings a nice energy to the fairy tales we know and love. The score is wonderful, as it helps make the proceedings a little less grim. While the film version is fun, check out the full version of the musical on stage.

This movie is awesome. The cast is phenomenal, especially Meryl Streep. The big bad wolf's part is very much the part of a pedophile, and Johnny Depp's performance will leave you feeling icky. The first half of this movie is very funny and light-hearted, but after what seems like a happy ending, the movie does a 180 and gets kind of depressing. Still, the music is awesome, the sets and costumes are great, and the performances are really great. I only wish Disney would put out movies with a blu-ray and dvd combo with the ultraviolet version.

Into the Woods is a great musical, and this is about the best adaptation a fan could hope for. Great music, great actors, and it captures the feel of the live production. I would highly recommend anyone who likes this movie to seek out the Broadway production. The visuals are a little dated, but the heart is there! Enjoy!!!

Meryl Streep is wonderful as always in the role of the witch. She may not have the range of Bernadette Peters who originated the role on Broadway but she more than compensates with her acting. I was amazed at how well the entire cast did in the singing department. My one regret is Christine Baranski didn't have a bigger role with her own musical number. The look filming worked well with the story and while I regret the removal of the Act I and II closing numbers and the Act II opening, I still found the movie fun.

I'm a big fan of re-working classic fairy tales - books (Looking Glass War), TV (Once Upon a Time), Movies (Snow White and the Huntsman, Maleficent), etc. - and I enjoyed this as well even though I'm not usually a big fan of musicals. [Ella Enchanted was a great one.] My daughters would give it 5 stars.

If you're familiar with the Sondheim musical, you would probably expect Disney to to PG (or G) it down, but that's not the case here. It's pretty faithful to Sondheim's un-Disney-like storytelling. The songs are great and the actors seem like they're really having fun.

The usual Disney Opening. At a small village at the edge of the forest of the wood the characters sang vice speaking. This is a fairy tale like no other – its’ a Musical. – what an interesting combination to please your listening and viewing desires. In the end – all that is seen wrong was not the past and right came again, and all lived happily ever after except their lives were to take an unexpected turn. Finally their wishes came true…

I enjoyed the treatment of the well known tales from our childhood storytime, with the slight bending of the compass from pointing ALWAYS towards the "happily ever after" endings, and allowing us to see those 'Knights in Shining Armor" as sometimes very flawed and very human. Plus the music was great.

This was a wonderful movie. I wasn't sure what to expect because I'm not a fan of Sondheim's music itself, but this was great. The storyline and the songs were easy to follow and the costumes and makeup were wonderful. I got the version with the digital copy so I'm able to watch it on my iPad or at home on my TV. I was surprised to see that this was in the children's sections as I thought it was a little dark for kids, but you have to judge by your own child. I thought it was wonderful.

I enjoyed the film adaptation in Gary Marshall's expert hands. I know James Lapine wrote the screenplay, but it's still unfortunate to alter the story's ending, plus edit or eliminate songs from the stage score. All the performances were stellar, with kudos to the Witch and Red Riding Hood.

I am a Musical Lover. This though the story was memorable, I had seen it many years ago from a Broadway production. I never thought the songs really had that catch a really good musical needs. Over all better then Musicals at least I rate it in my top 50 or so favorite music movies.

Although I didn't think it was without its flaws, I enjoyed this interpretation of the play. Many movie goers didn't realize this was a musical going into it so reviews have been a bit harsh in my opinion. If you are a fan of musicals and the Grimm fairy tales then check this one out.

Red riding hood, jack and the beanstalk, rapunzell, and Cinderella are featured in this musical starring the likes of Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep. Interesting combination of the fairy tales. Musicals aren't exactly my bag of tea, but if you want a change of pace, give it a view.

My husband is not a musical fan, so I was the only one to see the movie in the theater. However, my husband and kids (teens) all really enjoyed the movie when we watched the Blu-Ray. The scene with the princes' song "Misery" was of course perfect comic relief. This is not the sanitized version of fairy tales - people die, are unfaithful, and suffer abuse - so perhaps not for the toddler set but the reminder to be careful what you wish for is a good one.

The actors in this film make it what it is, and the singing and music is extremely well done. A Sondheim purist may question some of the structure and content choices for the script, but anyone out there just looking for a great movie musical should be happy with this version.

It's fairy tales with a dark twist. The first half is funny, which makes the blow of the second half less difficult. Still, everything ends well. Good messages about although life is not a fairy tale, things can get better and "no one is alone". Toned down from the original musical so that it is family-friendly, but the overall message remains intact. Excellent performances by Meryl Streep (as usual), Chris Pine, Christine Baranski, and Emily Blunt.

Wife told me we were going to watch a modern reinterpretation of Classic fairy tales . Well. Be prepared. This " modern interpretation" has tons of singing. If they spoke their lines in stead of singing them, the movie would be half as long.
the wife loved it. I fell asleep.

Although I think some of the cuts from the second act undermine much of the potency of the original, getting your wish does not always equal a happy ever after, enough of the upended tropes and wonderful music remain to call this a worthy film adaptation of the stage classic.
