Customers consistently note the Roomba i8+'s excellent cleaning performance and ease of use, praising its intuitive app and effective mapping features. The self-emptying function is a highlight for many, although some find the noise level during this process to be high. Positive feedback also focuses on the robot's navigation capabilities and good battery life.

Sensor Suite Is A Game Changer for Vacuums

INITIAL IMPRESSIONS
Roombas have always been the standard with which other vacuums have been compared to, whether it be from their performance or because they were more or less the first major player in the market. I have sampled other Roomba vacs, namely the 694, as well as entry-level models from iRobot’s primary competitor and those devices have always left me wanting.
Their aimless meandering is frustrating as they have no real set cleaning paths, often covering some areas more than once, while other parts of the floor go untouched. I’ve watched these lesser models hit the same exact spot on my baseboard a half a dozen times before finally getting a clue to move on in another direction. I had given up hope on the robot vacuums as nothing more than a fad. This i8+ is my first robot vacuum with intelligent mapping. iRobot claims the device can map areas of your house or apartment and remember those settings for future cleanings. I’ve used other vacs before, so queue my eye roll.
USE
Downloading the iRobot Home app onto my Galaxy smartphone was trouble-free. Sadly, I could not find anywhere that iRobot put a simple QR code to link to the necessary app in the Google Play store or the Apple Store. Come on iRobot, step up your game. After installing the app, adding the i8+ to my existing account was simple and painless. Pressing the 2 buttons on the top of the robot entered it into pairing mode and it synced nearly instantly to my Galaxy. Good work.
The iRobot Home app includes a handy mapping feature. This feature turns off the suction of the Roomba and lets it traverse your house learning its way around. iRobot claims the i8 can map your house in as little as 2 trips, but may take up to 3 – 5 cycles to get a full and complete picture of your home and its furnishings. After about a half hour of constantly babysitting the Roomba, keeping it from crossing rugs and thresholds, the device returned to its docking station. Opening the app verified that during this half hour it found about 80% of the areas in my family room, kitchen, and breakfast nook. Not bad. Hopefully, another mapping schedule will fill in the holes.
iRobot includes a standalone device that keeps the robot from entering areas that you don’t want it to. It is a great feature. Using the slide switch, you can set it to either transmit an invisible beam to stop the Roomba from say crossing through a threshold or have it set up to transmit a barrier, approximately 2ft in diameter that the Roomba can sense and stay away from a general area, say like your pet’s water and food bowls.
Speaking of maps of your house, the Roomba can be programmed with multiple maps and the areas on the maps can be named for use with Smart Assistants. I have a map set up for my kitchen, family room, mud room, and front entry. Naming these areas in the iRobot app allows me to coordinate the iRobot app with Alexa and then have the device clean an entire area, or just parts of the house. Neat!
The i8 is my first self-emptying robot vacuum. While I had never given this feature a second thought, I now wouldn’t want a vacuum without it. The dust / dirt bins on all the robot vacuums are small. Actually, very small. It doesn’t take any time for them to fill up with pet hair. The i8 knows when its bin gets full and will go back to its docking station to empty. The docking station quietly removes the contents from the i8 into a self-contained bag and the i8 is back off to work. A handy light on the front of the docking station lets the owner know when the bag is full and needs emptied. As a bonus, iRobot includes several additional bags with the Roomba.
NEGATIVES
I wish iRobot would include another 1 or 2 of the sensors in the package. I was able to make due with one of the “Do Not Enter” sensors, but I had to keep a close eye on the device during its initial mapping run. I was constantly moving the sensor to other thresholds as the robot moved from one area to the next during its initial exploration run. Another sensor or two would have been a huge help.
The Roomba does not like switching from surface to surface. Vacuums from Roomba’s competition negotiate these transitions much easier. The i8+ struggles as it goes from my hardwood floors to rugs. About 25% of the time, it climbs up the rug with no fuss, the other times it struggles and turns itself around. When it does manage to get up on a rug, it doesn’t appear like the brushes and cleaners have too much power. It takes almost no effort to stop the side brush from swirling and cleaning. This is something not exhibited in other competitors’ models.
Lastly, there is almost no documentation with the Roomba. I know iRobot is trying to be Eco friendly by having the manuals online instead of printed. The minimalist approach is frustrating. There were a few things I needed to reference during the initial assembly and set-up that frustrated me by having to look it up on a phone or laptop. On top of that, there is no QR code or anything else to link to the manuals, app, etc.
CONCLUSIONS
The i8+’s intelligent sensors and mapping software are game changers in the world of robotic vacuums. The Roomba’s sensors are quite impressive. The vacuum can identify hazards in its cleaning path and can sense itself approaching a wall or toe kick of a cabinet, etc. This is my first vacuum that was able to maneuver itself around a toy instead of just running into it and getting tangled up in its brushes. Furthermore, this is also the first time I’ve had a robot vacuum that can sense things in its path and slow down before touching them. My other vacs slam into chairs and baseboards without hesitation. Not the i8+. Its sensors can “see” objects and help itself work around them. It slows down before touching up against a baseboard. It “sees” around chair legs. Unlike my other robot vacuums, my Roomba i8 doesn’t get trapped under the breakfast table for 15 minutes trying to find a way out. The i8+ methodically senses the environment and can free itself in just a matter of seconds.
The i8 has changed my impressions of robot vacuums. I can see why they have become so popular. Now that I have the Roomba “trained” on where to go around the house, I no longer come home to a hide and go seek session of trying to find the robot vacuum that has become lodged under some random, obscure piece of furniture in the house. I can set a schedule and let it do its business while at work and come home to a freshly vacuumed house free of pet hair and kid crumbs with the Roomba back at its docking station.
If you have kids and/or pets, consider a robot vacuum for the house. They are very helpful. I would never have said this before the i8. If you are in the market for a robot vacuum, do yourself a favor and get one that has the intelligent mapping and sensor suite like the i8 offers. Even though it costs more than its entry-level twins, the added feature set of the i8+ is worth EVERY penny.

iRobot Roomba i8 vac surprisingly good

What’s in the box:
iRobot Roomba i8 robotic vacuum
Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal tower (with dust bag installed)
Virtual Barrier with batteries
2 extra filters
3 extra dust bags
Set up was simple. (But some simple instructions or at least a quick start card with a QR code for downloading the app would have been welcome.) I plugged in the tower and placed the vacuum in position for an initial charge. While it was charging I did a web search and found some basic instructions and downloaded the app to my phone. Once the vacuum is charged, fire up the app, follow the prompts and soon the robot vac is ready to map out your living space.
I set mine up to map twice. Once it produces a map, the app allows you to correct / customize it. By customizing the map, you have the ability to “spot clean” only specific areas on the map if / when you choose. While mapping, it also senses different flooring types, identifies “dirty” areas and throw rugs. On the third run, the i8 vacuumed my main floor living space.
My main floor is mostly finished hardwood and tile. The vac is doing a good job of keeping the floors clean, even under the furniture where an upright vac can’t reach. It also keeps runners and most of the throw rugs clean. Edge cleaning is also very good. Only very small spots in square corners where a round robot just can’t reach are left. A few minutes occasionally with a dustmop or dustcloth takes care of these areas.
Things to watch out for include throw-rugs with fringe. On the first run the vac wound some of the fringe around the edge cleaner. I had to cut a bit of the fringe off to disentangle it. We now fold the fringe on that run under when the vac is scheduled to run. Also, it cannot handle cords on the floor at all. Either use the included virtual wall to shield off areas with lots of cords or pick them up before the vac runs.
The replaceable filter is located on the dust bin inside the robot vacuum. The filter is accessed by removing the dustbin. The instructions I found for removing the dustbin said the release button is on the “back” of the robot. I found it right next to the dustbin. Since this model automatically empties the dustbin, the only reason to open this area is to occasionally check the filter and replace it when needed. Replacing the dustbag in the tower is just a matter of placing it in the slot and fluffing it a bit to conform to the space.
In summary, this is our first robot vac and I am impressed with how well the iRobot Roomba i8+ cleans and how simple it is to operate. I like the way this vacuum uses a pattern to vacuum, rather than just wandering around. A charge lasts about 90 minutes which is enough to vacuum the main floor of my house. I also like that it will spot clean specific areas.

Best purchase ever! It is a highly impressive Wi-Fi connected self-emptying robot vacuum. Its sleek Medium Silver design complements modern interiors. The self-emptying feature reduces maintenance, while Wi-Fi connectivity allows convenient control via a smartphone app. The vacuum's mapping and navigation technology ensure thorough cleaning, adapting to different surfaces. While the initial cost might be higher, the convenience and efficiency it offers make the iRobot Roomba i8+ a worthwhile investment for keeping your home clean with minimal effort. Thankful!

I love this! This is my second Roomba, and she’s even better than the last. I say ‘she’ because they’ve both been named Alice, after the housekeeper on The Brady Bunch…yeah, showing my age a bit.
As a single guy working two jobs, she’s great at keeping up with cleaning after my 2 dogs and cat. Once she learned the layout, it was Game On. She doesn’t get stuck on rugs and things like that anywhere near as much as my last one, so the job is completed way more often. I also love not having to empty her after every run.
HIGHLY recommend getting one ASAP!

Best Help around the house

Ive own several Roomba's, and yes they do have bugs here and there but at the end of the day this product its hands down the best help around the house.
I own 2 dogs and 2 cats. Vacuuming is an everyday thing as you can imagine. Pet hair all over the house, all the time. Vacuuming is a chore and it sucks and frustrating given that you vacuum in the morning before work and when you come back there is more new pet hair to be found. Roomba has made this job way easier and it truly helps me keep the house clean at all times.
It may not get every single crevice around the house, but overall it cleans up very well. Yes you will have to bring your old vacuum out to tidy up corners and places it cannot get too, but this is not an everyday job now.
My experience is strictly in non carpet material such as tile, wood, and vinyl. I do have it go on rug areas, which it does well but I don't do that often because I rather hit the rugs with my real vacuum.
Roomba will learn your home and you can label the rooms of the house so you can tell it to go to specific areas. You can program it to run at whatever time you want. If you have a hard time waking upo in the morning, program it to the time you want to wake up, that way the sound of it running, it will serve as an alarm. And that is not a complain of the the device, at the end of the day it is still a vacuum so it's going to be loud.
The self emptying feature is also great. Being able to be so hand off is what makes this devoid attractive. Unboxed, Program and forget it.
There is minor maintenance that you should do periodically such as checking the brushes for stuck hairs etc, changing the brushes, changing the filter, cleaning the wills from debris that get stuck over time. The app does a good job reminding you when things need maintenance which is very easy.
Overall, if you have pets and need a little extra help on keeping your house hair free, this device will change your life!

I've always wanted to own a Roomba and I was in luck to come across this one. It gets hard to keep up with the house and the least you want to do is clean ,vacuum and let alone dump out the trash every time . I have a toddler and she loves to leave all kinds of stuff on the floor. The Installation of the Roomba i8+ was very easy, just download the app and you are pretty much good to go. The first thing it did was Map out my home. This Roomba, I'm keeping in in the Living room which also covers my dinning and kitchen area. It did a great job at recording every inch of it. After it Maps out your cleaning area you can customize it to just clean a certain place or the whole entire area. This helps out a lot by only focusing in a specific place you want cleaned. Any part of your home can be customize at your liking and be set at specific times. Like any other vacuum remember to pick up cables or large items in which will get stuck. So far I haven't had an issue with things getting stuck. It also comes with a wall barrier, I had no idea what it was or what exactly it did but boy let me tell you its something you never knew you needed. So convenient to have in case you forget to update the cleaning cycle on the app. It also has the ability to go around certain items on the floor that might cause trouble. Very clever little thing. The Automatic Disposal is where it gets interesting, the suction power is STRONG. Feels like an airplane is about to take off. You can hear how well it sucks everything out and I can assure you, your Roomba is clean and ready to go for another cleaning. The Roomba comes with 4 disposible bags. Now this is why I'm giving it a 4 star. At the price point this Roomba is which is an 800 plus vacuum you definitely don't want to spend more money buying BAGS!! I mean come on, I wish it was a washable bin at least. For the type of cleaning that is done at my house is not much but if you have dogs or more of a heavy flow around the house then you will use up all the bags quick and let me tell you the bags aren't that big either. Overall is a great vacuum with powerful suction. Great for moms that need extra help keeping the floors clean.

The easiest way to keep your home clean!

Living in an apartment with hardwood floors that collect lots of dust, dirt and feathers from a feather-pillow couch, it's very easy to recommend the Roomba i8+ for anyone who wants to keep their home cleaner with little to no added thought or effort! This model of Roomba comes with the Roomba robot itself, a charging stand that also serves as a place the roomba can deposit dirt between runs, as well as a single light barrier "beacon" to keep the robot out of rooms and areas you don't want it to traverse that it uses it's light sensor to honor (and two spare replacement dirt storage bags to be used in the stand). The Robot is extremely intelligent and efficient, being programmed to not only make a digital map of your house/apartment while cleaning to better determine how to clean your home, but it tracks where it has covered and what type of surface it is going over to tailor to all of your home's cleaning needs. Not to mention, it also cleans very effectively, no matter the surface, the main reason the Roomba is so great! You may find it won't clean as deeply as a traditional vacuum would because of its size, but it being small enough to fit under surfaces and it having the ability and ease to run more frequently will lead to a similar clean overall! You'll find the Roomba works best when in a clear room with few obstructions on the floor, but if there are obstructions, it has a bumper on the front that it uses to map the room and avoid obstacles safely. It also keeps track of its battery life, and when it's close to depleting, it will actually find the charging base, deposit the dirt into the stand (the stand vacuums it out of the robot automatically), and can continue on with cleaning, all without manual intervention! I found though that sometimes loose objects and light carpets can get caught in the robot and require manual intervention to get un-stuck, so it is important to keep the floors it cleans clear to preserve the longevity of the robot and help it do its job. You can truly take the "no manual intervention" to the next level by using the iRobot app (very easy to pair the robot to) and scheduling the robot to clean at a specified time/schedule which is extremely convenient, and helps keep your home clean with little to no added thought, even when you're away! The app is also very nice and shows cleaning history/status, product health, allows you to empty the Roomba or start cleaning with a push of a button and more! Definitely would recommend getting this Roomba to help effortlessly keep your home clean!

This roommate vaccum is an excellent addition to my home. Vacuuming has become an easy task without all the man work needed. This roomba was actually quite easy to install out of the box with instructions included to make things easy. All you have to do is plug in the home base in an area that wifi can be located in your home so you will be able to fully use your roomba correctly. After setting it up in a safe location where the roomba can go to its homebase just make sure you have no cords in the way so it doesn't mess up the roomba. You must download the roomba app for your roomba to fully work but after doing the few steps to link your roomba up to the wifi and charging ypur roomba fully you will be able to control your roomba. The roomba is actually quite simple to control in the app by setting up its time limit for it's cleaning. Over time using your roomba will remember your room and it will make cleaning your home easier. When it is down cleaning after its time limit it will head back to its homebase and it will clean the dirt from the vaccuum with its self cleaner suction that it is located on the homebase. Each roomba comes with filters for easy clean up. The roomba app will help you if there is any issues with your vaccum and will help locate technical issues. Easy to use vaccuum which is simple to navigate. Easy with no mess which I absolutely love!

I love this purchase. This robot is amazing. It took about an hour and a half to map my house and then start cleaning. I did a lot of research before purchasing this model, and I am definitely glad that I spent the money for it. Having a dog and having to sweep up dog hair every day or finding it all over my clothes, and my socks was annoying. After the first time I ran the robot, I am mediately was able to tell how clean my floors were. This has reduced my weekly floor cleaning about 90%. Definitely worth getting the self empty. I would recommend this to anybody with dogs specifically. The application was easy to navigate and Install, and create my preferences. My entire house is swept before I get home.

Amazing! I owned the original Roomba back in September 2002 and now this one. Oh how far they have come! The ability to have a map and tell it what room or area you want vacuumed is a game changer. It will vacuum for 72 min and then charge for 85 min. Because it needs to charge half way though cleaning my house it it takes 3.5 hours but I'm at work so I don't even notice how long it takes.
For years after we got our first Roomba we said we needed it to have a dock it could empty into finally they have done this and it works really well.

I love it. I have terrible seasonal allergies plus I have two dogs who love to roll around in the grass and bring the outside inside. I run the Roomba through the entire house once every week while I’m getting ready in the morning and then about 3-4 times a week in select locations like the kitchen, living room, and family room… Considering I can do this from the touch of a phone and can do OTHER chores while something is vacuuming for me… I recommend! I know what my parents are getting for Christmas lol!

Amazing! I do plenty of research before I purchased one of these. I am glad I decided to spend a little more to get this vacuum. It is definitely worth every penny! My living room was constantly covered in dog hair every day and no matter how much I vacuumed I could not keep up with it. That immediately changed once I got my robot! It does a fantastic job with keeping my floors hair free! It was very easy to set up and it took no time at all to map out the floor. Very impressed with this product!

Both my wife and I really enjoy having this keep our floors clean. We are fortunate not to have the issues discussed in other reviews and are very happy with its performance so far. We mostly have bare floors and low carpets. We don’t have the issues of a thick rug or shag carpets. It was easy to use out of the bag x, easy to keep, the rollers and the brush clean. We probably run the full house program 4 out of 7 days with no disappointments. I do recommend this product for up keep cleaning.

This device is great! it learned my apartment very quickly and went to work. The scheduling feature is great and it is wonderful that I do not have to empty the container every time. The one thing I will say is that the bag doesn't last long if you have rugs/carpets. But, this is still a worthwhile investment.

iRobot Roomba i8+ works well. I just wish I had gotten the J8+, which is what I thought I had purchased. The discounted price on this one was excellent though. From what I read the S and J versions link to the Braava Jet M6 Mop to clean together, which would have been nice...but not really that necessary. For my upstairs I purchased the Shark AI 2 in 1. Both systems are good, but I do think the Roomba has better navigation. The Shark has gotten stuck a couple of times, whereas the Roomba has jumped across extension cords with no problem and has not gotten stuck once. I have it scheduled to vacuum (and mop with the M6 Jet) three days a week and that keeps my floors very clean. I am happy with the purchase and will get one for my mom when they go on sale again.
