Absolutely love my Roomba. Great product, cleans well and easy to set up. Love the app allows me to map out my house and set boundaries. It's crazy how well this vacuum can identify areas throughout my home where it may need to clean more. I did buy the separate self-emptying dock, which is wonderful for not having to empty the bin as often. I have cats, so the bin does fill up quickly with cat hair.

    Nice upgrade from 690

Initial setup was easy. I already have the iRobot app, so it was simply a matter of opening the app. The app could already detect the J7, so all I had to do was start the setup & tell it which wifi network to use. Then it had a quick overview of some of the J7’s features. Charging base has built-in storage for the power cord, which is a nice improvement over my older Roomba. After you let it get through 3-5 cleaning cycles, it should have a ‘map’ of your home built. The app will notify you when the map has been built, and you can then go in and define the different rooms of your home. This feature is really cool, because you can then tell the Roomba to just clean certain rooms at certain times. iRobot has also vastly improved the Roomba’s ability to avoid getting stuck. My old Roomba 690 would often have issues with cords and small throw rugs. So far, my J7 has handled them all, and I haven’t had a single notification that it had gotten itself stuck. The J7 also uses a camera to aid in object detection, and can take snapshots of the objects that it detects. At the end of a cleaning cycle, it will have you review the objects that it was uncertain about. After you review & mark each object accordingly, you can have it go ‘tidy up’ those areas. To test this, I dropped a charging cord in the middle of the floor. In the pic, it’s kind of hard to tell exactly what the J7 detected, but it’s enough to tell you where to go looking for the object. It’s also worth noting that you have to opt IN to this feature, so iRobot is trying to respect your privacy to a certain extent. My biggest complaint so far is that it frequently tells you that the bin is full; sometimes even right after you empty the bin. There are a couple of sensors that you should quickly wipe off every time you empty the bin. I guess those sensors get a little dust on them & it thinks the bin is full. To be fair, the instruction manual (which you have to download) does tell you to clean the sensors, but I’m a little surprised at how often it needs to be done. We didn’t get the model with the ‘Clean Base’, which automatically empties the J7’s bin, so I wonder if it would also have trouble with the sensors needing to be cleaned frequently. As for performance, it does a decent job. It obviously doesn’t have the power to replace a full sized vacuum for deeper carpet cleaning, but the convenience of scheduling it to automatically clean every few days more than makes up for it. We have a mix of surfaces (laminate, tile & carpet) and it handles them all with ease, including transitioning from one surface to another. Overall, we’re pretty happy with it. Definitely an improvement over the older 690 series.

Easy to manage with the app

This is my second robot vacuum, and while they've definitely come a long way, there are still some shortcomings to this type of vacuum. But this new iRobot is definitely a step in the right direction. To make the most of this iRobot you really need to use their app with it, otherwise there's cheaper options. With the app, not only can you control the iRobot, even away from home, you can also help it learn your home and basically micro-manage it. The mapping feature really is the highlight though. It takes a few days for the iRobot to learn the layout of your home, but once it does, it's a game changer. In the beginning though it's kind of fun watching it move around, hit things, and stop for a while to think about what to do next (or really just waiting for the algorithms to run and tell it what to do). It's almost like watching a puppy slowly learn about its surroundings. Once it's learned enough to get a basic layout of your home the app lets you fine-tune it. At this point you go in and adjust room dividers and names. Once that's done you can start 'micro-managing' the iRobot. Just need a specific room cleaned? Or have an area that needs attention more often? It's easy to just go in the app and tell it to clean whichever area and it goes and does it. And when it starts annoying you just tell it to go back home and it goes straight there. It's kind of crazy how smart it is in this respect. My previous robot vacuum would take a long time while bouncing around the walls in the general direction of where home is. This iRobot though, it knows exactly which way to go and where to turn to get there right away. It doesn't stop learning either. There were a couple rooms at first that were a mess and had way too many obstacles to even try to let the iRobot go in them. So for the first few days those doors remained closed. Then one of the rooms got cleared enough to let the iRobot do its thing, but it wasn't on the map. Not a big deal though, because if you tell the iRobot to just vacuum everywhere, it'll go to new areas when there's no longer any obstacles, and it did. After the job was done the app even notified me that it found a new room. After just a week you can clearly see how the iRobot starts getting more efficient and aware of the layout. It's not without it's shortcomings though. In the course of learning, it'll detect new obstacles. The camera it uses will actually take a snapshot of it when it does and ask you about it to help it learn. This is pretty neat, but sometimes leaves you shaking your head. One of the "obstacles" it sent me a picture of was literally a small tuft of dog fur. This "obstacle" was something it should be cleaning up, not avoiding! It also explains why during the first few days there were several tufts of fur still on the floor making me question whether the iRobot even vacuumed the area. Speaking of dog fur, I have 2 big dogs, and they're shedders, so keeping up with the vacuuming can be a chore. While a benefit of the iRobot is that it makes it easier to keep up on it, if you don't, the bin fills up extremely fast. My house isn't even that big and the main area it vacuums daily is only 500 square feet. Yet if I go more than 24 hours between cleanings, the bin fills up before it can even finish the small area. So if you have dogs that shed, it might be worth it to step up to the + model that comes with the self-emptying base. Another shortcoming, and this one is really more common among most robot vacuums, is that it can't always get every where. Tight corners, a maze of table and chair legs, narrow passage behind a couch, under a recliner, etc. will just start gathering more and more dirt over time. And in the case with dogs, more and more fur. So even with a robot vacuum I find myself having to get the old stick vacuum out and manually clean anyway. Additionally, the iRobot isn't exactly quiet. Not a big deal if you're not home while it's working, but I work from home, so that's not always possible. Which means sometimes it's just easier to take 10 minutes to vacuum my 500 square feet the old fashioned way than hearing the iRobot going for an hour (which is about the average time it takes for a basic clean). Overall it's a good vacuum that's pretty "smart", but isn't exactly a good fit for all situations, especially given the price. For someone like me with a small house and 2 big dogs that shed, it would be very tough to justify it, but in a bigger house with no pets it could be a big timesaver.

I'm sure I'm not alone, but I don't like to vaccum. It just so happens that we have a dog we adore -- not to mention we babysit (or is it dogsit?) our daughter's dog, so vaccuming frequently is not optional. A few years ago we tried a Shark IQ Robot vaccum which left a lot to be desired. We also tried an iRobot model which ended up being a similar disappointment. Both did a respectable job picking up pet hair, but to put it simply, they were stupid which left us quite frustrating. Neither seemed to "map" our house with any effectiveness, and both spent much of their time going over the same areas over and over, and often ran out of battery power before making it back to the base station to recharge. Charging cords hanging down caused the cords to get sucked up at times -- even causing them to completely stop with a bit too much frequency. So far, the iRobot Roomba j7 is different. iRobot Roomba j7 is much smarter and more efficient than either of our previous models. it’s equipped with a camera to help it to better avoid obstacles. The j7 has a front facing camera that helps avoid obstacles and avoid them -- like pesky wires on the floor. When it came across a charging cable in its path, it paused for a moment as if to check it out, then went around it to continue cleaning. Seeing is believing! While it's not perfect (at the moment to recognize cords, cables, headphones, and pet waste) other obstacles such as shoes and socks, will eventually be added through a software update to improve its obstacle avoidance. You can also review the cleaning history to check whatever obstacles it might have come across so you can "train" the j7 to do better. Id does a solid job cleaning our hardwood floors, but area rugs seem to be a bit problematic. It picks up the surface stuff like pet hair just fine, but doesn't seem to really get into the fabric for that "deep" clean. It does do a good job of maintenance between hardy cleanings using a powerful vaccum. Overall we found the j7 to be a smarter, more efficient, robot vacuum than our previoius models and it offers good cleaning performance which is made better by its smarter avoidance of clutter that often trips up other robot vaccums. I kind of wish we would've gotten the self-emptying model though. While there are some things that will still confuse it (one of my grandkids' crayons), for the most part you'll have to worry less about having to keep an eye on it to make sure it's doing what it is supposed to do. I And it supposedly avoids pet messes! Thank goodness I haven't had to test that, though.

Love it! It does an amazing job vacuuming up the dog hair, parakeet feathers, and all the crumbs that accumulate on my kitchen floor. A wonderful job mapping out the floor space in the house, 1st and 2nd Floor. Works well on linoleum, carpet, hardwood, and tile. Takes photos of what prohibited it from vacuuming an area so I can move it next time. I can tap the app on my phone and have it vacumm all spaces or sections of the house. Schedule daily vacumming. Has made my life so much easier and I appreciate the help!

It's nice to have a robot vacuum that has the ability to detect obstacles with a real camera. This is a good idea for the long run. One reason I dislike this particular robot vacuum is that it has run a few times and it still has a ways to go to learn about my so called "obstacles". You have the option to review in the app which is pretty neat. Smart robot vacuums are getting smarter but you also want performance. Per the app, to cover 540sq ft it took 2 hours and 4 minutes to complete. 1hr and 17 minutes was cleaning and 47 minutes was to charge. My other robot vacuum can cover 722sq ft in a total run time of 1 hour and 14 minutes. Cleaning is relatively easy although if you do have a dog the pet hair will clog it real quick. It's not the biggest trash collection size but again, it's probably a good fit for smaller homes. Do your research for your sized home and performance. Once you get it to learn your home and map everything I believe you can just set it and forget it.

I love, love, love it. I did a lot of reading before I purchased this roomba. I got much more than I expect. I love how it mapped out my home. I am able to use the app and clean any or all floors in my house. It clean nicely. It is easy to clean the trash out of it. It lets me know when the 'bag' is full. It avoids obstacles such as tables. I even went around some grocery bags I had sitting on the floor. Setup was easy. I really didn't;t have to read the manual.

Title: My Mini Maid: Roomba Does the Dirty Work

Who knew a little disc could save my sanity? Enter my Roomba, the unsung hero of my home. It might not fetch my slippers, but it sure sweeps up everything else—crumbs, pet hair, you name it. Roomba goes about its business with a diligence that’s frankly inspiring. Under the sofa, around the kitchen table, it leaves no nook or cranny unexplored. Watching it navigate around chair legs is like seeing a tiny, determined ballet dancer who’s obsessed with dust. The scheduling feature? A godsend. I set it up once, and now it tidies up while I’m out. Coming home to a clean floor without lifting a finger feels like cheating… but I’m not complaining! Battery life is stellar. It cleans my entire apartment on a single charge, then humbly docks itself—I imagine it’s charging up for more heroic deeds. In summary, my Roomba isn’t just a vacuum; it’s a part of the family now. Less time cleaning means more time for everything else. Roomba, you had me at ‘Start Cleaning.’

OMG! I have never had a Roomba before but this is life-changing! In just a few days of regular use (while I have a cup of coffee and read the paper), my house has never looked so clean! It took about three days of regular use for the unit to "map" my house. I have a one-story ranch so there wasn't much to learn! Today, I was able to "label" the rooms so now I can use either the app or my google mini to tell it where to clean. How awesome! Supposedly I can run it from anywhere. I don't have to be home. I will try that when I get to work tomorrow. It cleans under things with ease- Something my vacuum cleaner can't reach to do. It seems like this will get smarter the more I use it. Something I wish I could say for myself!

Overall more impressed with this one than the Shark I had previously. This one has an easier to control and more intuitive app. The battery lasts for my entire 1st floor which is around 1k sq/ft. My only knock is it's a little loud but I'm stretching to find a con.

The Roomba J7 cleans extremely well on our floors (hardwood and laminate with area rugs). My wife is impressed on how well it cleans under beds, couches, etc where it has clearance. Some touch up in corners or items it can't get under is required. The mapping feature allows you to set areas not to clean, set area's to clean on a different schedule, and define area's within an area to clean more frequently. It will take a few passes to fully activate all the mapping functions. If the battery gets low it heads for the charger and when charged goes back to where it stopped cleaning. It's a vacuum so makes some noise but schedule it when you are away from home and enjoy.

I turn my Roomba on frequently to get up dust and allergens so I don't have to vacuum manually as much. The Roomba doesn't always get everything, especially some corners. It does save a ton of time over manually vacuuming. You do need to be careful that you don't accidentally hit it while charging and it doesn't charge properly. I also wish that the bin, even pulled apart, would get everything completely out. I do like that it can easily go underneath some furniture and get dirt that I normally wouldn't take the time to get with every vacuuming.

Love it! Cleans well and I like the features of the app. It definitely avoids obstacles, but it is not full proof. We had it suck up some cords a few times. Every now and then it would get stuck and was not able to find it's way back to dock. Overall, I would buy again and would recommend it. It does a great job vacuuming. The one big reason we bought it was that it avoided pet messes. Just a warning, if you pet is sick, it doesn't recognize the mess. This killed ours unfortunately!
