j5create USB Type-C adapter

A Good Buy

Posted .Generally, adapters emit some heat as a normal part of its operation, especially if the USB-C pass-through charging and/or all ports on the hub are utilized. It can get hot because of that.

Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got this multi-adapter as an adjunct to my MS Surface Go, essentially as a low-price Surface Dock. It provides a number of useful ports so it can serve as a complete laptop desk center supporting monitors, printers, external disks, and ethernet. It is small enough to throw in your go bag, but don't forget the required cabling. But, as noted in other reviews, it runs very hot. Essentially, the whole case functions as a heat sink. (You can touch it, but you wouldn't want to hold it.) In various test scenarios, there were problems with completing tasks or requiring long times to complete tasks. I didn't run benchmarks, but I believe the heat was throttling down the device. Further, the heat was there even when the device was idle. The adapter will run on tablet power alone. I didn't run time tests, but I think it would deplete the tablet battery quickly. The adapter does allow for an external power source. All-in-all, I think the concept is a good one, but the implementation isn't there yet. Not recommended.

I'm sorry to hear about the troubles you're having with throttling. If you would contact us at our customer service department, we'd be more than happy to troubleshoot this issue with you and get you back up and running at full speed.
In regards to the heat, we do expect that the JCD383 will get warm or even moderately hot but this is well within normal ranges. This product has been stress tested and we have determined that the average maximum operational temperature for the adapter is ~106 °F / 41 °C, while the adapter is under full-load or being used continuously for periods >~ 1hr.
Please remember that ambient temperatures can also affect the temperature of your device and that of the computer it's hooked into. It's recommended that you use your tablet where the ambient temperatures are between 50° and 95° F (10° and 35° C).
In testing, we have found that the average temperature for computers using the adapter is ~100 °F / 37.78 °C to ~140 °F / 60.00 °C, while the computer is under full-load or being used continuously for periods >~ 1hr.
However, if you are noticing that the your adapter is exceeding the average temperature of 135 °F/57 °C, for periods > 30 minutes, you might have a defective product and it may need to be replaced. We haven't had a device exceed anything higher than 112°F/44 °C, for periods <10 minutes.
Perfect marriage of price and performance

We've had to replace a few down through the years due to the USB connection getting worn out, but the price means there's also no reason to even consider using something else.
