    Good, Basic Webcam Situation

In a market flooded with webcams that boast all kinds of features, the JLab Epic Cam is a good, basic webcam situation. Since I work from home mostly, I nearly spend all day on video calls, so I have 3 main criteria that I use to assess a video solution: 1 - It must be have good video with greater than, or equal to 1080p video resolution. 2 - It must require minimum-to-no bloatware to work. 3 - It must be lightweight and easy move around for travel. The JLab Epic cam worked for my second 2 items pretty much out of the box. The camera itself is plug-n-play and was instantly detected by my Mac and Windows laptops across multiple apps like Zoom or Quicktime. From a physical connectivity stance, the camera has a connected cable that's built into the camera and ends in a standard USB-A connector. This was nice because my at home and travel docks have several USB-A 3.0 ports. Like most webcams, the Epic also has built-in microphones. It's been my experience that no built-in webcam microphone sounds as good and clean as a dedicated microphone, but it's plenty good enough for most video calls over Zoom, Slack, or Google Chat. While the camera advertises itself as a 2K camera, I honetly couldn't really tell a difference with this compared to another 1080p webcam that I compared it against. If I had to guess, the framerate of the camera looks like it's set at 30 FPS, so don't expect buttery movements. If you're looking for a good, on the go, basic webcam solution, then this is a solid option. If you're looking for something that's more geared towards streaming or content creation, there are better options on the market.

    JLAB EpicCam tests my memory

Upon connecting the new camera, I was disappointed. The image was grainy and my skin tone was too pink/red to be lifelike. As I examined the picture of myself, I kept referring back to my old webcam, a Logitech Pro 9000 which I remembered as having a fairly sharp image and normal skin tone right out of the box. Ahh, the tricks of memory… The JLab EpicCam was easy to connect and setup on my computer, as it is plug and play. I attached the webcam to my monitor, but then decided to place it on the shelf above the monitor, and both locations were stable. There isn’t an install disc and that’s a blessing and a curse; not having to deal with bloatware, but losing flexibility in altering the settings of the image. My computer is in a bedroom/office that is low light and that introduced problems right away. The image was giving skin tones a reddish/pinkish cast and the picture was grainy. Other objects in frame were dark with little contrast but seemed to have the proper hue and saturation. I used the button on top to increase the exposure and that decreased the pink cast, but anything beyond the first level increase in exposure was too much and the view became washed out. Raising the exposure one level did bring out the indistinct objects in the background so that they weren’t lost in darkness. I was used to my Pro 9000, so I knew I could adjust the settings for that webcam in the software they provided. And I assumed that their Right Light 2 software that came with the Logitech webcam was helping to automatically improve the brightness of the shot. I then used the Windows Camera App Brightness setting (about the only setting you get. No white balance, contrast, gain, and color intensity) on the EpicCam, and by setting the brightness at 124 and the exposure at +1, I got a reasonable picture. It still seemed a little grainy and my face still seemed a tad too pink, but my arms were normal color. I Skyped my son and we shared screens so I could see what he could see, and the Skype video quality of my image was better than I was seeing from my camera image in the Windows camera app, so I was a bit confused. Skype gives you the ability to adjust the settings I mentioned above as well as the brightness and exposure. Some of these settings I had adjusted in the past. Adjusting these settings for this webcam through the Skype app fixed all the picture quality issues I was experiencing. I did not test either Zoom or Teams picture settings to see if other platforms allowed these improvements. As far as the audio quality, my son stated that it was crystal clear on his end, though we didn’t test the stereo image. I decided to take some video of myself in my office and compared it to a video I had made months earlier in the same room with the Pro 9000. The results showed that my memory was way off. The sharpness and detail were so much better with the JLab EpicCam. The graininess I was seeing was also in the Pro 9000’s picture, as well as video noise and jaggies around objects that were absent in the video from the EpicCam. And the pink cast to my face was on the Pro 9000’s video as well. When you turn on the Pro 9000, you get to test it on an image that is only 4 ½” X 3 ½”, so it hard to see the detail. But when I compared both videos as they filled my 2k monitor’s 27-inch screen, it was no contest. Now it was easy to see the 720p of the Pro 9000 was way more degraded than the 1080p or 2k image of the EpicCam. My Pro 9000 is over a decade old and when using direct comparisons, it was easy to detect the advantages of this new camera vs. the older technology. My son had made the same positive comments about the image quality on our video call, but at the time I was still unsure of his assessment. It turns out he was right. This is a great camera. Finally, I added a couple of lamps with daylight temperature bulbs to my office and the graininess all but disappeared. And my pink face became normal hue once again. Now I know that altering my room’s lighting is an additional step in order to get a properly exposed image, so that is why I decided to take away one star. I was hoping it would have better low light performance. By doing side-by-side comparisons I now know that the JLab EpicCam is a vast improvement over my Logitech Pro 9000’s image quality, and it is a welcome addition to my office set-up. Pros: 1) Easy initial setup-plug and play. 2) Mounts easily including a heavy/substantial threaded tripod mount. 3) Looks very nice and allows the choice of two faceplates (white or charcoal gray) attached magnetically. And a braided cable. 4) The camera can rotate on its stand at least 180 degrees, though the downward tilt is limited. 5) Impressive specs. 5MP camera, 2k video, and up to 60fps 6) picture settings are available in Skype, if that is what you use. 7) Four-step Exposure and Zoom available on touch buttons on top of webcam. 9) Two omnidirectional microphones. Cons: 1) Have to use Windows camera app settings and Windows has no versatility with this webcam in settings. No white level/saturation or other settings in windows default camera settings. 2) Low Light and/or Warm White lamps lend a pinkish skin tone to the image produced. 3) Low light environment also caused graininess in the image. 4) No built-in privacy shutter. 5) A bit pricey. I think this is a quite good webcam and I would recommend this purchase. It shows that you can fool yourself when comparing your new experience to the memory of a prior experience. You have to do the right comparisons, and when you do, you come to the right conclusions. The JLab EpicCam gives a detailed and precise image, and the video is smooth and clear. I do wish it could handle low light situations better, but it still performs very well in most situations. I know I will be using it for many years to come.

This camera is an excellent addition to my work from home setup. It is a massive improvement over the camera included in most laptops. The 2K resolution provides crisp and detailed image resolution that is an immediately noticeable improvement over lower resolution cameras. I have found myself, like many others, working from home more often than not. The camera built into my laptop is ok in a pinch, but for serious video conferencing needs a separate camera is a must. Not only is this 5 megapixel camera high quality, but the 2 microphone array captures sound at the best possible level. An important consideration is that a fast, stable internet connection is a requirement to transmit 2K video. The camera field of view is a comfortable 90 degrees. The camera functions are adjustable in several different ways using Windows settings. The universal clip makes attachment to a monitor or laptop screen as easy as can be. Included in the box is the camera, a braised USB-A cord, and 2 detachable faceplates (black, gray). I highly recommend the JLab Epic Webcam. It will easily meet most personal or professional video conferencing needs.

A Good Webcam Upgrade with Helpful Features

The JLab Epic USB Webcam provides a definite upgrade from most built-in computer cameras. As would be expected, it was very easy to setup and use. Just plug-and-play. As a rule, webcams are a simple and basic accessory. The main differentiation between products tends to be issues of video resolution and megapixels. As built-in laptop cameras have improved, it has become necessary for third-party webcams to up their features as well in order to justify purchasing them. So what does the JLab Epic USB Webcam offer? * Video Resolution: 2560 x 1440 provides a solid HD resolution - a step up from 1080. * Megapixels: With 5 megapixels, there is enough ‘substance’ for high-quality video when doing video-conferencing and other forms of video communications. You can pay more for webcams offering a greater number of megapixels (and higher resolution) - which would be desirable if you were using the camera for video production and studio-quality podcasting. Otherwise, the specs offered by the JLab Epic are plenty for normal webcam uses. * On-Camera Zoom and Exposure Controls: This is one of the big pluses with this product. By just touching one button on top of the camera you can choose between 4 different zoom ranges. The same goes for changing the image exposure (think brightness) between 4 different levels. This is a very useful and helpful feature for making the inevitable adjustments that come while on video-calls. It minimizes the interruption caused when trying to make those adjustments via computer software. * Dark or Light Front Panel: A nice addition is being able to change the ‘look’ of the camera to be either black or off-white weave. The only thing missing on the JLab Epic is a lens cover. There is a clear indicator light that shows through the weave cover. Many webcams offer a manual lens cover for assurance. But, ultimately, this is a personal choice. There’s always the black-tape hack! Thanks to the special features the JLab Epic offers, especially the easy touch-controls, I recommend this product.

This JLab webcam worked immediately out of the box with no effort at all. I unfolded the built-in clip on the camera and positioned it on top of my monitor. Adjusting it to the proper angle was simple to do and with minimal effort. I am using it on my secondary monitor connected to a MacBook Pro which only has USB-C connectivity so you will need to have an adapter to plug it into a USB-A port. Not any major requirement these days and easy to solve for. As a side note, the cord is very good quality as it is nylon braided making it more durable. I spent the day on conference calls and occasionally asked others how I sounded and looked. After the sarcastic remarks were done, the feedback was positive. I was coming across very clearly with minimal noises from the background. I was told that the picture was very clear and focused and, the automatic light control made it easier to see me if my background was a bit dark. It is an HD camera at 1080P and 30 FPS allowing for high-def video if you want to use it for recording. On the top of the camera, there are controls that you can use to zoom as well as for changing the exposure. There are two microphones built in and on each side of the lens. Included are two faceplates so you can decide if you like black or grey best. Overall, this is a great webcam and for the price, will not break the bank. You will be very happy with the performance and you are not giving up anything by choosing this one over some of its competitors.

Simply put, this is a great camera. The build quality is obvious, the features are things not usually found in this price range, and the images are exceptional. Out of the box this is a really easy camera to master. The universal clip attaches to your laptop or monitor in a pretty standard fashion, and with plug and play compatible with Windows, Mac, and Chromebook, connection is as simple as you would expect. The faceplate is fabric rather than molded plastic, with a magnetic attachment that allows you to decide if you want a white or grey faceplate. Image quality is excellent, with 2K / 1080p resolution and 30 frames per second providing outstanding clarity, particularly in this price range. The camera can be adjusted easily using the buttons on top, and with 15 different exposure settings for lighting conditions and a four-way zoom control on top, you can readily find whatever adjustments you need. Simple to use with lots of flexibility and great video quality, this really is a great camera.

This camera is a nice addition to my work setup. Typically I use my built-in webcam on my laptop but since I use multiple screens, it was nice to have another option. It was super easy to setup. All I had to do was plug it into a USB port and it did the rest. The video quality was awesome. It was very clear and adjusted well to the lights in my office. I like how compact it is as well so that I can take it with me when I'm away from the office. Sound quality was good too. There was also another fabric faceplate in the box so that I could change it from a light grey to a dark charcoal color. That was not an important feature to me, but it might be to someone else. The faceplates are magnetic so you just pull one off and place another on. It snaps together. The only problem I had was that the stand does not adjust as well as I needed it to. I have a thin monitor so it could just be that I will only be able to adjust it to a certain position for that monitor. It did work better sitting on the laptop. Not a big deal but just in case anyone was curious about it.

I took the webcam to work because I keep my laptop closed most days and work off three monitors. I thought it would be great to run a webcam instead of opening my laptop for meetings. Making those changes all the time throws off what I am doing on my current monitor layout. My eyes are also struggling to see my laptop display anymore so I need to stick to the monitors. I like what I see in the preview window for the apps like teams or zoom. I see myself clearly and have had no issues with the camera view. No one has complained of not being able to hear me or not hear me clearly or issues seeing me. Just today, I joined a meeting but had no camera. I did my troubleshooting after the meeting and no attempt to connect showed the camera, even removing the USB plug from the dock and plugging it into the laptop directly. Then I rebooted and felt like I was in an episode of the IT Crowd. Hello IT, did you turn it off and on again? It worked again after that with no issue. I do like the dedicated exposure and zoom buttons. Those are a nice feature especially if you're wanting to minimize how much background is showing. I mean, who doesn't use the zoom or teams backgrounds anymore, am I right? I also prefer the darker fabric cover because the lighter one, though nice looking, would show any dust or dirt quickly. I think for the price This is a very nice webcam for those that have desktops or need to keep their laptop closed. I would definitely recommend this webcam to anyone looking.

Out of box - Quality material used to make this webcam. Easy installation to my laptop and adjustment to my monitors. The cable is long enough to allow you to hide cable behind monitor and reach laptop or desktop. Whatever configuration you have the cable is long. What’s great is how it connects to the monitor, it is very portable and not permanently attached. It’s easy to transport to office and home. I have been using this at my office because I dock my work laptop and this allows me to have video meetings so I don’t have to have my laptop open while it’s docked at my desk. I like how adjustable the camera is with height. It also has a magnetic faceplate to match whatever look you are going for. The charcoal gray face or black face. The indicator lights are very clear so you know if you are connected or not. Video quality is great, sometimes it can be a too bright in our office or dark but it allows adjustments via MS Teams settings and JLab settings. People at work were impressed with the video quality. It would be nice if it was wireless because sometimes I forget to disconnect if I needed to undock my laptop and the cord and webcam would get pulled off the monitor. Other than that I really like how easy this webcam was to use, the video quality and construction. I highly recommend if you are looking for a webcam.

I got the JLab-Epic Webcam intending to add it to my new smart TV. The TV literature stated that it could do video calls with a webcam. What the literature didn't state, without digging deep online, was that there were only a couple of compatible cams. This one wasn't compatible. I decided to connect the webcam to my laptop. This camera is far superior to the camera built into my laptop. This camera can record up to 2k resolution. There are 2 buttons on top. One button controls camera zoom, allowing you to better frame the image you wish to present. The second button scrolls through 4 exposure settings, allowing you to adjust the image for lighting conditions. My desk is against a wall without decent lighting for my face. The preset exposure settings helped me get a much better exposure; the advanced settings helped me get an image that looked like I had ideal lighting. My built-in camera usually made me appear as a silhouette when seated at my desk. In addition to the adjustable clip, the camera mount tilts and swivels. There are 2 omni directional microphones. The camera comes with 2 faceplates in grey and white. While I'm not using this for my original intended purpose, I love it, as it's a huge improvement over my laptops built in camera, I wish I had had this during the covid/stay at home era.

To start with, unboxing this webcam was difficult. There are 2 "sealant" strips, on the bottom, that have to be removed in order to access the camera. While these strips are perforated for ease of removal, having them on the bottom, and having to go through 2 of them, seemed a bit unintuitive and excessive. Once inside, getting the camera out was somewhat straightforward. The box must unfold to get to the coiled cable stored behind actual camera. In doing so, the gray camera face falls out, as it's hidden behind the quick-start instructions, which themselves are helpfully folded in a random manner. I did like the fact that the cable came with a hook-and-latch strap for cable management, and that I didn't have to find something on my own. Setup is literally plug and play. I found an open USB port, plugged it in, and it was immediately recognized and usable. I was able to select it from my WebEx list of options right away. This was probably the best monitor-top "feel" I've come across, too. When I unfolded the base and latched to the monitor, it immediately felt solid, not as if any movement would cause it to fall, which is something I've found is common to almost all webcams. The camera boasts the ability to zoom in, as well as adjust a brightness/saturation filter. However, using either of those features results in a very noticeable lag as it resets to the new settings. Depending on how it's set up, and how you're accessing the buttons, located on the top of the camera, using those features also results in blocking the camera with your hand, so it becomes difficult to view the changes as they're (slowly) happening. The feature change also only goes in 1 direction, with 4 options for each. Zoom is zoom, while the saturation filter goes from a lot of color bleeding across the subject to almost fully whited out. It also has the ability to swivel side to side and up and down, which I found helpful. When I set it up initially, it was exposing a lot more of my background than I cared to share. A few quick adjustments, and I was good to go. Finally, the picture isn't all that great. I tested with a faded red shirt, and in each meeting, I was constantly asked if I was sunburned. for being 2K/1080 HD resolution, it definitely wasn't that. The picture was extremely pixelated. Overall, it feels like it's a lot of novel features, but poor execution. If you're in need of an easy-to-set-up webcam, you could do worse. But, you can also do a LOT better.
