Level-5's LBX is an interesting game - it combines the addictive collection-driven gameplay and charming cartoon presentation of games like Pokemon, with engaging action combat. Instead of catching and training adorable monsters, LBX battlers build brightly colored model robots that do battle in diorama arenas. It's a cutesy premise that belies a world of depth. Nearly every aspect of LBX robots are customizeable. Body parts and weapons are only the beginning. Both characters and individual robot parts increase in strength with each level. Motors and batteries can be swapped out to optimize your bot for different combat scenarios. The game yields itself to hours-upon-hours of addictive fine-tuning. It's a perfect package for robot fans who want some of the best parts of an Armored Core or Gundam title on the go on their 3DS. And everything is wrapped up with the high level of presentation that you'd expect from the same people behind games like Ni No Kuni, Professor Layton, and Dragon Quest VIII. I can't recommend this game enough.

    Scratches the Custom Robo itch

With Nitendo seemingly determined to never do anything with the Custom Robo series ever again, I began looking anywhere for that customizable robot battling RPG fix outside of the grindy, hardcore space of games like Armored Core (which I also enjoy for their own merits). Because of this, LBX caught my eye, but the mixed reviews and knowing it was created as a tie in with an anime geared at younger audiences made me wary. In the end, however, the positive notes in reviews and player experiences spoke enough of my language to push me over the edge, and I find myself very glad that they did. The customization is deep, and trying new combinations of parts is as satisfying as it ever was in the game's biggest obvious comparison, Custom Robo. Unfortunately, this customization is tucked Tightly into some clunky menus. There's just a little too much entering and exiting menu tiers to get yourself ready for any given, even quick, battle... and there's a enough loading between each tier to be jarring. The combat is where the game differed most from the aforementioned other inches-tall robot series. The battles take place in far-flung spaces with players starting out of sight from one another, making how you approach an encounter just as important as the encounter itself, as battles can end quickly if you leave yourself open at the wrong time. This distinction feels the most impactful in the game's 3-on-3 battles, where individual engagements can take place across miniaturized sprawling fields or cities before closing in to put pressure on remaining foes. It feels good, like how you might imagine it would feel for two small, elite teams of mech pilots facing off against eachother to feel... just tiny. Overall, while many elements of the game smack loudly of Custom Robo, I would compare the combat's feel much more closely to SEGA'S Virtual-On arcade series, albeit without the intentionally cumbersome controls. On the topic of controls, however, some of the clunkiness mentioned earlier makes its way into combat here. The most notable offender is a large stun period after landing from a jump. In most situations, this feels right, as it keeps combat ground-focused and makes attempting to take the high ground in an encounter a risky but potentially rewarding proposition. Some maps, however, require a large amount of aerial manuevering to enter the action focal points of the map, which can make jumping needlessly feel like a nuisance. It can also lead to situations in the game's lightning fast one-life one-on-one battles where an enemy can irrevocably take the upper hand simply because of the vulnerability of your jump up onto the plateau where the action is taking place. It's hard to say whether this is a sin of controls or map design, but either way the two elements do get out of sync which can lead to some frustration. The story runs your typical "young kids get thrown into world-changing events and must rise to the occasion as heroes" lines, but it's got some satisfyingly emotional moments and enough of that younger anime cheese that I continue to find compelling into my adult years that, if you're anything like me, you'll still enjoy quite a bit despite the obvious tropes. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that the anime tie in cultivated almost entirely in cutscenes having a lovely anime presentation. All in all, while the game exhibits some mechanical clunkiness, and the lack of online multiplayer stings quite a bit, LBX was majorly enjoyable, and it's got enough going for it for me to give it a hearty recommendation, especially if you've been jonesing for a mech battler with the simultaneous accessibility and depth of the painfully absent Custom Robo series.
