I was looking for an entry to mid level gaming laptop that could also handle productivity. I spent about 3 months doing research, especially in regards to the intel -vs- AMD chips and associated hardware. You can get caught up in the numbers, but you really need to see this thing perform to appreciate it. It's a great little gaming computer for most games, and I would definitely recommend it. If you're looking for a dedicated gaming platform with all of the bells a whistles, look elsewhere, but if you want a solid performer than can handle a decent load, then this is a good option.

So let me begin by saying after the additions I have made this machine is definitely a 5-star machine. I can't honestly rate this machine a 5-star out of the box for a couple small corners that were cut. Although I can say by purchasing this machine for $699 at the time, it is closer to 4.5 stars. One thing that could have been a super cheap inclusion for them is an SSD drive instead of the 5400rpm 1TB drive. While it is an incredible amount of space an SSD greatly changes the performance. I have since added not only a 500GB SSD drive, but also a 256GB SSD using the internal M.2 adapter for all of my Steam games (major plus here). The only other minor gripe is if it really comes with the 8GB memory or rather it comes with the max of 16GB. I happen to be pleasantly surprised that mine actually shipped with 16GB of memory. There are some small present day omissions that can be viewed as a minor negative when comparing to other gaming class laptops like USB-C connector. However, with the important thing being a capable gaming laptop...this is a superb machine at a terrific price. It is a very fast processor, a great GPU, and looks great as well. There are some adjustments that should be made to power management, to get the best from your CPU, and some graphics settings to ensure you are running off the discrete graphics card and not the integrated R7 graphics processor. There are great forum entries with these adjustments. If you consider yourself a savvy PC user, this machine is awesome with a little work from yourself. If you are looking for absolute best out of the box...pay the premium and look elsewhere. Anyway....solid build, stylish, great performer...and $699 or lower is about right for this machine...considering you will likely be investing in an SSD and possibly the 8GB of memory if yours doesn't come with 16GB. I felt compelled to write this review because I feel the 2-star reviews were not indicative of the machine I purchased.

Had it for about a month, pretty great, runs games and programs well, although it's battery life isn't all that impressive it makes up for it. Only major issue i have is that the sound has some strange static-like noise when running most games and playing high pitched music .

Well I received my laptop three days ago. So far it boots up at an okay speed, programs take some time to open, but I can deal with that.. My issue is ever since I turned this laptop on for the first time my CPU and DISK have been maxed at 100% for no reason. I'm completely unable to play any games on it. Another thing on day two i had the screen crash on me and reboot the computer saying "display error".. Over all for the price I wouldn't recommend it..to many problems.

Very good laptop. current engineering student and fulfills almost all of my needs. it is very quick and easy to use, however the battery life is terrible. i'll get 1.5 to 2 hours of battery life before I need to plug it in. programs are quick to load and the screen resolutions for my programs are outstanding. the only complaint I have is the battery life.

Thank you for choosing Lenovo. We built this system for users like yourself, that needed maximum power. Battery life is the trade off for maximizing power. You might want to take a look at your power settings in the Control Panel under Power settings. You can customize your power usage to maximize battery life. lenovo

Less than expected with such specs

This computer is amazingly slow for the price, specs and design purpose. You will have plenty of time to get coffee after starting this computer and getting your first programs running. Here are some things that I have noted so far. Let's say you do something like left click on an item pinned to the task bar. The initial click is slow to respond. Almost as through the computer forgot what it was supposed to do. Likewise when starting a program or app for the first time. Not your normal lag as a program is cued; no you can dang near brew a pot of coffee lag. Additionally, the USB, HDMI, Card reader don't seem to be ready to use for quite some time after startup. BIOS? I don't know, this is a new machine, should I really have to get that deep?

I bought this laptop about 3 months ago, and admittedly, I expected more out of it. It did not run games how it should. However, after a ton of research and troubleshooting, I found a way to make this laptop perform as it should. You can read up on how I did this here. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Y700-15ACZ-Throttle-Full-Fix/m-p/3299543#M142205 The laptop runs great now, and I recommend it, but only if you're willing to take the steps to troubleshoot it right out of the box. If you can afford a better gaming machine, by all means, go for it, but for somebody on a budget that wants a fantastic machine, this is the way to go if you don't mind some tinkering.

    Useless GPU

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this computer expecting it to run recent games, only to find out that the R9 M385X dedicated GPU is absolutely useless. It doesn't work at all. There is no way to enable crossfire or the GPU itself as the processors APU overrides it completely. Also the GPU cant even crossfire with the APU because the APU is an R7 and can only be crossfired with another R7 GPU which this laptop does not have. I've tried installing drivers and everything and it just doesn't function. I've used several monitoring programs to see if the GPU is heating up or running or anything of that nature and to my surprise it doesn't work. I just don't understand why they would put a good GPU in a laptop only for it to be rendered absolutely useless.

Thank you for choosing the Lenovo Y700 laptop. The AMD FX-8800P APU is properly matched and compatible with the AMD R9-M385X GPU configured within this system (see the AMD link below):
      http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-R9-M385X.154229.0.html
You are correct, this system is not set up for Crossfire, but the APU will run graphics through the R9-M385X GPU. We recommend you check with the game software publisher and confirm their minimum/recommended requirements to run their game at the settings you require, then compare those requirements to this system's capabilities. lenovo
