    Movie must see

Of all of the movie adaptations done of this book since the 30's, this version dedicates itself to the underlying theme of the book. It is more than a story of a prisoner being chased by law enforcement, and much more than a love story. It is the story of a man who because of his spiritual conversion, struggles to determine what is right and wrong. And another man because of his conviction to uphold the law can't allow mercy. It is a story of Grace vs Law. This movie caught the heart of that struggle. Make sure you listen to the words of the songs they really will tell the story.

Best Musical in quite a long time.

When I first heard that Catwoman, Maximus, and Wolverine were making a movie together, I get very jacked up. Add in Borat, and Belleatrix Lestrange and I got even more excited...and then I heard it was a musical. Not just any musical, but Les Miserables. This movie blew me away. I know Hugh Jackman is a very accomplished broadway actor who's done multiple musicals, and that Russell Crowe is no slouch either being an accomplished vocalist. But Anne Hathaway's singing was flat out awesome. Same with Sasha Baron Cohen. The acting in this movie is top notch. Anne Hathaway gave the performance of a lifetime. It was jaw dropping amazing, and heartbreaking at the same time. Hugh Jackman proved he's not just an action star. His performance as Jean Valjean was great. And Russell Crowe gave the best performance he's given since A Beautiful Mind. The scenery in this movie, is absolutely gorgeous. Those who are big cinemetography buffs will love this movie. I'm not a huge fan of musicals, but this is one of the best musicals, and one of the best movies of any genre that I've seen in a long time.

MOVIE: - Powerful performances; loved all of the actors, especially Jackman and Hathaway. - Moving story that made me cry like a baby. - Songs will get stuck in your head. Can't even decide which song is my favorite, they're all bloody good. - A few flaws like distracting steadycam and poor pacing in some parts. VIDEO/AUDIO: - The video isn't impeccable, but it's pretty good. - Watched while listening with my Sony PS3 Pulse Headset's simulated 7.1 feature; sounded good enough for me! EXTRAS: - This steelbook is so nicely made! Prefer the design to the original release's cover - Commentary with Tom Hooper's a little boring because of his monotone voice. - "A Revolutionary Approach" feature is nice with all the behind-the-scenes stuff and interviews; gets uncomfortable though near the end of the "Singing Live" segment. This revolutionary musical about revolution and the human condition is now a perennial favorite regardless of its flaws and I will never forget how the scary-good performances and the transcendental songs made me cry like a baby in the movie theater.

    Moving, sweeping film, good musical

Les Miserables is a good musical. Memorable songs, emotional storyline and great acting by all of the cast (even Russell Crowe, there is nothing wrong with his character or the way he sings). You will be singing Master of the House in your sleep as well as the end song and Anne Hathaway's beautiful I Dreamed A Dream solo. Hugh Jackman shows he can do something beyond Broadway and Wolverine and the score is just brilliant. If there are any complaints about this film, I feel that the shots and cinematoraphy are kind of short sighted. The shots don't seem epic and seem confined as if they are just on stage. When you are actually on stage doing a musical, this is a given, but when you are transforming a stage play into a cinematic feature, you need to go bigger. Just a little underwhelming but not overtly distracting. For any person that love musicals, this is a must watch. The Blu-Ray extras are pretty top notch. You get interviews from the cast, the history of Les Miserables, production design documentary, the works. This is what special features on films are made for. Only thing missing was maybe a stage to script comparison. Overall, this is a must buy. And if you are a fan of steelbooks, don't let this one get away.

Wonderful rendition of a classic musical

This movie version of Les Mis is great because you can see a lot of detail from the story that doesn't stand out as much in the stage version-- everything from the horror Anne Hathaway's Fantine goes through when she sells her hair and teeth to the students' meetings that led up to the French revolution. Amanda Seyfried was a wonderful adult Cosette. She has a remarkable singing voice and I am so happy that she was cast. Hugh Jackman was also a very good actor and singer but I thought that some transitions he made between singing and speaking were a bit weird. Also he doesn't have as great a singing range as he used to, so they transposed some of the songs he sang to fit his range which didn't flow as well as the original. Russell Crowe's singing was a pleasant surprise. Overall a great story and great directing. Definitely worth seeing.

    epic movie, great soundtrack

I have seen the play on broadway and found it very true to its roots. The movie "filled in the blanks" for areas of the play I had found confusing. I thought some of the choices they made in acting roles were inappropriate. (Russel Crow, Sacha and Helena) and think lesser known actors/singers with theatre experience would have done a much better job. The actress who played Epionine (Samantha Barks) was from the theatre production and I thought she was fabulous and more authentic. Felt she didn't get the level of support and publicity that more well known actors (Hugh and Anne and Amanda) received. Thought it was very nostalgic and a nice touch to have the original Jean Valjean (Colm Wilkinson) play the role of the bishop!

One of the best from 2012!

Les Miserables is an overwhelming experience, much like the book and stage musical it adapts. In case you didn't know, the story begins when Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is released from prison after 20 years of hard labor that he was sentenced to after stealing a loaf of bread. He breaks his parole and begins a journey to redeem himself for his crimes, all while Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe) seeks to recapture him. The acting is absolutely fantastic from the whole ensemble cast. The singing is a bit spotty at times(more so from Crowe), but there are still many memorable songs. Highly recommended.

Fans of musicals and classics rejoice

This is a musical-lover's delight. If you're a casual or huge fan of musicals you are in for a treat. Well, it is a sad story (it's right there in the name after all)... a timeless classic sad story, that in many ways holds true today at its core... but except for the sadness, the performances are strong and it is a loved classic tragedy. People who aren't fans of musicals just will not get it, unfortunately, and they will miss out. For some movies the steelbook exclusive to Best Buy might be the reason you buy it, but for this it truly is a bonus on top of the quality of the story itself.

    Beautiful, moving film

After seeing the play performed in London, I was skeptical a movie version could pull off the impact I'd felt when I left the theater. Boy, was I ever glad to be proven wrong. Since the actors sang their parts as they were filmed (not lip-synced to a pre-recorded soundtrack) I was treated to an experience that felt very similar to attending a live performance. Even better than the stage production, the film allowed us to move across a broader landscape. I will caution those unfamiliar to the story - it is a sad tale. You will be moved to tears on more than one occasion.

One movie that unites the Family with enthusiasm

Visual and musical candy for a decent Home Theater system. Young and Old alike really enjoyed seeing some stars "out of character" but singing quite well all their own parts. I have a newly inspired opinion about musicals and our Family now looks at the ensemble cast in a different light - they were willing to sing live (no lip-syncing) to make this a unique film. Bravo to the cast for the added dedication of singing Live!

I've seen the Broadway production of Les Mis several times, and this movie does a great job at translating the story into a feature film. The entire cast is great, particularly Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, although Hathaway's character doesn't get a whole lot of screen time. If you like musicals, this one's a no-brainer. I bought the Best Buy steelbook version of this movie. If you're a fan of collectible packaging, and are lucky enough to be able to track one of these down, it's a gorgeous steelbook and worth buying.

First of all, I hate musicals. I have a hard time following them and I can't stand them. When I heard this was a musical, I was reluctant to watch it but decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. This is by far the only musical I've ever enjoyed. The story was intriguing and allowed me to easily watch it because I was enjoying it. I feel like if you follow the plot/story, you will enjoy the movie.

This is the closest you can get to the perfect production of Les Mis. Faithful to the musical, expertly cast, brilliantly sang, it was pure pleasure to watch for a fan. I can't say enough good about the movie. Seriously good for a night in.

    Just as Good as Broadway

I have seen the play 4 times on Broadway in New York. I was really sceptical about the success of the movie version, especially when the stars casted had previous roles from X-Men, Princess Diaries and The Gladiator. After reading many reviews, I saw the movie in a theater and was so surprised at the quality. I loved the cast, the cinematography, costumes, but especially the realism of the real-time singing (no dubbing after the shoot). ON par, if not better than Broadway!!!!!

Anne Hathaway's performance is stunning. Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter provide great comic relief. Hugh Jackman has proven he is a great performer. The music is fantastic. The only negatives: Russell Crowe cannot sing. He is miscast here. I also found Amanda Seyfried to be somewhat annoying. Her singing voice is a bit shrill. Young Cosette did a very good job, though. Also, a standout performance from Samantha Barks. I would highly recommend this movie.

Les Miserables is the greatest musical film ever! Hugh Jackman is so good and Anne Hathaway blew me away. Being a big Michael Ball fan I was not sure how I would like Eddie Redmayne as Marius but was pleasently surprised. The cast selection was really good with the exception Sasha and Helena. The emotions the actors poured into there roles were so good it pulled me in. Casting Colm Wilkinson as the bishop was genuis, paying tribute to the first Jean!

Les Miz has been a favorite of ours for years. Having seen the stage show several times, as well as, the anniversary concerts on DVD, we knew what to expect. Still the moving performances by the cast (except RC) and the up close and personal way this was filmed (not to mention the live singing done) really presented a side of this show that we had not experienced before. Truly a timeless classic!

First, I have always liked Russell Crowe as an actor. In this movie, his voice is not up that of Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway. And, Javert from the musical had a very powerful voice. This was my first time experiencing Les Miserables, so at times I got a little lost, but loved the musical. Audio and video are great. Really enjoyed Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thinardier and Samantha Barks as Eponine was a great performance, lovely voice.

Overall great film and very entertaining with mostly good vocal performances from the actors. I was surprised that R.Crowe did so little emoting and just seemed to sing one note. I kept thinking back to Geoffrey Rush's version of Javert and how much more driven and conflicted he was. I was most disappointed in the Crowe and I hate to say that because I am a huge fan, but I expect more from him as I expect he should expect more from himself.
