I have no shortage of smart lights at home, from a few different manufacturers. The biggest issue with growing your smart home devices is the cost of initial investment, which is high regardless of the solution you chase. Replacing all of your home’s light bulbs in one fell swoop is costly, but doing it over time you risk some value-based brands no longer being available. LIFX has bulbs also, but this review is actually about an in-wall switch—one that replaces a standard wired switch that you may already have installed at home. If you’re installing this under an existing multi-gang plate, know that it will only fit under a gang cut out for a rocker switch (not a standard toggle light switch). Another thing to mention here is that these switches require connection to a neutral wire, which for most newer homes shouldn’t be an issue. An older home without neutral wiring available will need a more involved installation and, likely, a licensed electrician. Once installed, the switch operates *for the most part* like any other switch, with some exceptions. No special configuration is required, as this switch (even without connection to the LIFX app) is just a touch-sensitive version of what you are used to. The switch has two buttons—the bottom button toggles the light on and off, and the top button can be programmed to control other LIFX (or LIFX compatible) devices. I did have a LIFX bulb in a lamp in the same room as the rest of the lights being controlled by the switch, so I was able to assign that lamp to the top button. The app is fine, although not tremendous in any particular area. Structurally it’s the same as many other smart light apps, with basic controls, scenes, effects, routines, etc. The app isn’t particularly intuitive, but it gets the job done. The switch retails for around $50, which is right around the same amount as you would find from competing manufacturers. The big downside I see with LIFX is the non-agnosticism when it comes to working with other manufacturers products, since the non-circuit button can only target items within the LIFX app. Still, if you have other LIFX bulbs (which seem to be a bit cheaper than some other leading brand smart bulbs), the LIFX smart switch may make a lot of sense in your home.

Great little smart switch if you have LIFX bulbs

I have a variety of different smart switches in my home that I've accumulated over the years. They all work pretty much the same way with just their stability being the differentiating factor. As long as I can get them to show up in HomeKit, I'm happy enough with it. This switch CAN act just like those other switches but can also do a bit more if you'd like. Setup is pretty simple if you know how to install a light switch and are comfortable working with electricity. After it's installed just follow the instructions in the app and you should get up and running pretty quick. I've heard of people having some issues with the setup process but I didn't notice anything. After everything is set up you can use the app to program each button for what you want it to do. The switch has a single physical relay inside that controls the switch you replaced. This will act just like a normal switch and turn on the overhead lights or outlet that's wired directly to that switch. But you can program the other button to control another LIFX bulb somewhere else (probably in that room). So if you have a lamp on the other side of the room with a LIFX bulb in it that normally doesn't have a physical switch to control it, now you can use the main relay switch to turn on the main lights and then the second button to turn on that lamp as well. Obviously that's just one simple example but mixing this switch with other LIFX products make it really neat and gives it a lot of potential. If you don't also have other LIFX bulbs, I wouldn't recommend this but I think it's definitely worth it if you're either invested in the LIFX ecosystem already or if you plan on picking up some LIFX bulbs as well.

Making an older house into a smart home is no easy task on a budget. Buying wifi bulbs and switches helps with some of the automation. The LIFX smart switch looks very simple a clean without the touchscreen and extra buttons, just two touch sensor buttons with haptic feedback and that's it. Out of the box, it comes with what you need to install it and directions for the 4 wire connection. Sadly, it doesn't tell you anything about features or even what types of switches it's compatible with. I had quite a hard time finding switch locations with a 4 wire setup and a lot of running up and down from the basement to turn off/on breakers. After attempting to wire it in 4 locations and switching wires around, I couldn't get it to reset to the blinking green light for pairing, just blinked red. I decided to call support and got a call the next day from an associate. He helped me go through the setup then told me the switch is not compatible with a 3-way switch. So I tried installing on a single pole switch that only has 3 wires and was told to splice a wire from the bundled white wires not currently used for the neutral. Fortunately that worked and I was able to connect the switch. I think the fact that it's a single pole switch should be front and center on the box, not somewhere in small print on the back. Once connected and set up, the switch works like any other switch except for the fact that you can control the lights with your phone. If you happen to have a LIFX bulb connected with the switch, the app lets you change color profiles, brightness, color temp, and even set up schedules for on/off times and nightlight modes which are great; but only if you have their bulbs. The switch only turns lights on/off, no dimming or color change is possible. Although this is a modern looking switch with simple backlit controls with haptic feedback, it's also simple functioning too. The only benefit I can see from installing a switch like this is the ability to turn on/off 2 or more LIFX products in one place. Given my difficulty installing and it's limited function, I might not recommend it unless you have a newer house and are planning on buying a suite of LIFX products to enable full functionality.

Modern Lights for the Modern Home

The LIFX Smart Switch and A19 Clean bulb combo is a wifi LED bulb and an in-wall single switch replacement. Yes, there are two buttons, but this still only electrically controls a single load. However, you're able to configure things so that more than just the single connected electrical device is switched when a button is pressed. Aside from being a wifi bulb, this one has a unique feature where the bulb can output HEV light to destroy bacteria. Installation is pretty straightforward, though may be a bit more involved for the light switch depending on your comfort with that level of home repair. For the bulb, pick an appropriate place and screw it in. I chose the middle light of the three above the sink. This would give it good coverage of the sink and counters to either side. The light switch then replaced the switch which controls all three lights. For anyone who has started down the smart home journey with bulbs, it is likely you've inevitably run into the issue where a bulb is inaccessable because the switch has been turned off. I wanted to maintain the normal functionality where the wall switch near the sink turn on and off all the lights, but I wanted to ensure the Clean bulb could always be turned on either remotely or via a scheduled action. This light switch was white, and matched up with the white plate covers already in the house. It definitely looks a lot more modern than the other light switches, and I'm starting to think about using the switch approach for controlling dumb bulbs, rather than trying to get everyone to stop using the light switches so the smart bulbs can be app or voice controlled. Next step was to install the LIFX app and pair the switch and bulb. The process is pretty simple, disconnect your phone from the internet, pair to the light or switch, then configure them to connect to your home wifi. Then assign the location, group, and give it a name. Like is normal in many smart home hub apps, you can create scenes, scheduled events, control the light colors and on/off state, etc. For the bulb, I mainly used the app to set the color so that it matched the two other non smart bulbs to each side. Then I set a schedule where it would switch to cleaning for a couple hours starting at 2:01 AM, switch back to my normal "color" at 4AM. For the switch, the top button acts as a normal ON/OFF. But not quite because it actually activates a scene when turning on that sets the Clean bulb to my desired color. The bottom button also has some scene behavior, but it instead is a manual way to turn on and off the HEV clean function. Aside from that, the switch schedule turns on the power at 2:00 AM (so I'm guaranteed that the bulb will have power to respond to it's scheduled actions) and turn off at 4:01AM. What would be cool would be more smarts such that if you assigned a smart bulb to a switch, it knew that it would need to power the bulb first, then perform the bulb action without needing to schedule this separately. Though, this is also the argument for going completely with both smart bulbs and switches. Then the switches instead of cutting electricity to the bulb, just send it the command to turn off. While I can't objectively comment on the performance of the clean feature, the bulb otherwise was easy to control and had a good range of color and brightness. I was really impressed by the switch. Pleasing design, the buttons have a nice glow that makes it easy to find in the dark but aren't bright enough to be an unintentional night light.

    LIFX Smart Switch

So I received my LIFX Smart Switch about a week ago and have been testing it out on my light switch in my condo. I've slowly been making the move over the last couple of years to making my home more "smart like," and this switch came along at the right time. Inside the box is the LIFX Smart Switch and faceplate with the Ground (green), Neutral (white), Load (red) and Line (black) wires coming out the back, 2 screws, and 4 wire connectors. Initially the installation seemed a bit daunting as I've never installed or attempted to install anything electrical before. So I made sure to take my time. After shutting off the power at my breaker box I began the installation process by removing the old light switch from my living room and carefully looking at the wires to see what goes where. Taking a picture of your setup before and after may help. It did for me. I connected the wires and secured the LIFX Smart Switch into place. At this point my only hope was that I could at least use the switch to turn my lights on and off. If that happens then I'm good. I powered the breaker box back up and installed the app. This is where I started to have issues is with the LIFX app and connecting the switch. After having installed this and getting an error read, I wasn't sure if I had installed the switch correctly since the user manual is not detailed at all. After a couple more resets it finally connected. For someone that has never installed anything electrical before, It seemed a bit much (for me at least) between the whole installation process and trying to get it connected through the app which seems a bit wonky at times. My only con would be for description of this light to be a little more detailed as to the type of switch it is and the installation paper to be updated. Recommended for those that are a little more skilled in electrical installation but a good light nonetheless.

I got the Lifx switch for my garage, getting pretty tired of turning on the light, getting in my car, backing out and getting ready to leave only to see my garage light on and having to get out to turn it off. Summary: Lifx switch is easy to use, easy to install, no frills but also no issues or subscriptions associated with bigger name brands. I would recommend this item for someone that is looking for an easy way to control existing lights. Installation and Setup Out of the box, the light switch has 4 wires that need to be connected to your wiring. Make sure you turn off your power at the electrical panel. Manual was easy to understand, especially if you've installed a regular switch before. For any of you that aren't comfortable installing it yourself, make sure to get a professional to do it. Wires are only Ground, Line, Neutral and Load. Setup was also easy and straight forward, once you power back on the electrical panel, you're going to hold both the buttons for 10 secs until the led indicator flashes green, from there use the LIfx app and easy to read instructions. CONs: No Thorough manual of what buttons are for, the bottom button controls the load to the lights but not sure what the top button is for. On the app you can use either button to turn on and off the lights.

Day by day we add more devices to our house that makes our lives better and simple and I think that this smart Switch is pretty nice and interesting device that can be part of our home tech because it can be use with Alexa or Google, it has its own app too which is great. Installation requires simple tools or depending on how your switch are set at home, but I believe for most houses one screw driver and a plier may be enough, just follow the installation guide, just in case remember turn off the power of the actual switch before staring the installation. Once I installed the smart switch I had to download the app to set up the device, if your using iPhone you can use the home app to use it. With the app you have multiple ways to customize your lights, if you're using Lifx light bulb the experience is even better, the app some times crashes and it needs to be close and open, I don't know if it's just me but I feel that the app need a few improvements, if you're patience and follow the steps this switch can save you time and give you features that can make your days better, I can recommend this product.

LIFX smart switch is an easy to use and install smart switch that can control two regular lights or LIFX smart lights. The switch features 2 buttons with haptic touch and backlit design. The included instructions was easy to follow and uses standard sizing plate which makes swapping with existing switches a breeze. This smart switch is also compatible with IFTTT, Alexa, Cortana, Google home. What makes this switch unique is that this switch puts the lights in standby mode instead of turning off the power completely. Another unique feature is that you can setup one button to manually control the light while configuring the second button to control other LIFX smart lights in your home without physically connecting to the switch. You need to use the LIFX app to customize different themes. Overall, this is a a great versatile switch that can control smart as well as "dumb" devices.

Setup: Unboxing and connnecting the switch was easy. I did have trouble with the configuration. It would not find my wireless network. Every other smart device I have works. I ended up having to create a seperate 2.4ghz SSID to allow this to be discovered. Once that was done it went smooth. User experience: I thought this would allow my regular switch to become smart so I could turn it off from another room. This is appealing since the kids leave lights on all the time. I did realize that only one button works for the on/off. It has a little pulse to give you the feeling that you pressed something. The other button would be nice for their smart bults to add mood lighting to the room. I still have yet to get that. My son still keeps pressing the buttons like the old physical switch so I wish there was a way to make that work like the old one until you add to the system. Other final thoughts: I like the concept but like a lot of smart lighting there is not a full portfolio to outfit your home without substituting brands or living without. For example I have a lot of 2-3 light switches and there is not one made by this company. Also the bulbs are needed to make the experience whole. Finally the value I am not sure about since you have to pay quite a bit to gain some different scene options and be able to control the lights from anywhere in the house. I think this tech is still in development.

Good smart switch. Can control 1 physical circuit with any bulb and other circuits with LIFX smart bulbs. Useful app gives many options. Not really for security but could scare away potential intruders with a sudden burst of light. If you're not comfortable working with basic electrical tasks such as replacing switches or outlets you need to find someone who is. I'm not sure hiring an electrician would be worth the added expense to just install this switch but if you need other work done or are installing several switches then it shouldn't be a big deal. Be sure to cut power to the switch at the breaker before installing. I recommend using a basic voltmeter to verify it's off to prevent shock. If you don't know what I'm talking about then you probably shouldn't be trying to install it. Pretty simple to install and looks good with lit switches. Just a touch will do or control it with the app. Some have reported they had to add it to their network manually by selecting other in the app so be prepared for that. Documentation is somewhat lacking so you may have to experiment a bit to get it working properly. You apparently need a neutral wire to use it but not a problem for most modern houses. You need to install it where there is good reception of your wifi (obviously) or smart functions may not work. Smart vs green. Many of us realize that smart devices often require a "standby" mode to function as smart which usually means they consume some power even when not being used. It may be a small amount but multiple devices do add up. You may not notice it on your monthly bill but just something to think about.

Ive installed a few kasa and wemo switched previously, so I have some experience with installation, so as usual, before installation make sure you shut off power at the source. Go ahead and connect the appropriate wires to the ones in the wall once you remove the old switch. Once wired up and back in the wall, go ahead and restore power at the main breaker. With power on follow the steps in the app to complete setup. I did not have any issues with setup like some others. How this differs from the kasa and wemo switches i have is that they only controlled one device, where this with 2 buttons has the ability for 2 devices. As long as those locations are using smart bulbs, you will be set. I really enjoy the look of this switch. Very sleek. The haptic buttons are a nice touch as well. Recommended.

Installation was easy but please be aware that I have some experience installing smart switches all over my house and every time it becomes easier and easier. So, if you are going to install it yourself, take some time to learn how to wire it safely. What I liked the most about this switch is that it has two very useful buttons. One is just to turn any lights on and off. The second, along with the first, can trigger different themes as customized on the app if you also have LIFX smart lights. What I quickly found out was that I can use the second button to turn on a LIFX light not connected to the same switch. That worked great for me because I can turn on the “dumb” kitchen lights that are directly connected to the switch, and the smart LIFX lights in the living room. All from the same switch. It reminded me of the Philips Hue switch although the LIFX Smart Switch is directly wired and can also control non-smart lights while the former is portable and uses battery but can only control Philips smart lights. You can control the switch with Alexa or schedule it with IFTTT, for instance, but you can also turn it on and off the old fashioned way when no digital assistant is available or desirable. And the backlight is subtle and, should I say, beautiful. This smart switch easily beat all the other ones I have owned, with maybe the exception of the Hue one I mentioned before BUT it solves a problem the latter doesn’t, which is to make any light smart. And not only lights, but anything that can be turned on and off from a switch, such as ceiling fans, for example. I do recommend it and from my experience thus far, it deserves five stars.

I had hoped that I would be able to connect my other smart lights to this switch as a simple off/on, but that’s either not possible or I’m missing how to do it on the app. It works fine for my overhead light that is hardwired into the house, but I was looking for more of a philips hue control style that allowed me to say “hey google, set the mood to whatever” and have it activate my other smart lights and LED strips. Maybe it will be supported in the future, but as far as I can figure out it only works for LIFX branded bulbs.

Installation for the Lifx Smart Switch was pretty simple, but the switch had 4 wires (red, green, black, and white) so I had to be able to identify "load" and "line". A simple online search helped out and I began the rest of the process. The app was easy enough to download so things were moving along smoothly at that point. Unfortunately, this was where things took a turn for the worse. After pressing the two buttons, the light flashed green indicating it was ready to pair. I tried for several hours to connect the switch to my wireless network, and although it would find the network, it would promptly disconnect so I would have to start the process over. This cycle repeated several times so I contacted Lifx via email. They responded quickly, assigned me a ticket number, and 3 hours later, offered a suggested fix. Unfortunately, after several more attempts and no success, I gave up. I read a few online reviews and saw that this is, unfortunately, a common problem (although some people have had success). I removed the switch and put my old "dumb" switch back in the wall. I was excited to try the product but just can't make it work

The LIFX smart switch appears to be a device that should turn any ordinary light switch into a smart switch. I was excited about setting this up and using all of the features the product has to offer. Unfortunately, I was not able to get the switch setup through the app. During the setup process it asked that I switch to my device’s WiFi settings and locate the smart switch under Other Networks. It also said it could take up to 15 minutes to find the network. I tried for over an hour and was never able to get passed that point in the setup process. The instructions for wiring the switch could use some improvement. The illustration and directions for the wiring setup was really small. I had to take a photo with my cellphone camera and enlarge the directions. I really wanted to set this up in my home, but due to not being able to complete the setup process was a bummer for me.

I got this switch thinking it would replace my dumb dimmer in the dining room. It does not. It is only a switch. On or off. Alexa can turn it on or off. The most frustrating thing was getting the app to work. I had to factory reset the switch twice for the app to detect it. Out of the box upon installation, it errored red. It never did discover my network, I just manually entered it. Wiring is very straight forward and it’s a nice clean look, but that’s all the positive I have to say. Now I have to remove the switch and replace my old dimmer. I may install this LIFX switch in a room like the attic or garage that just has a single pole overhead light that it would be nice to voice activate.
