Tried updating firmware, as recommended, but issue is the same. The fact that there are no indicator lights on the machine doesn't help in troubleshooting. Reinstalled older router (Linksys AC1900) and issue went away.

As what you've described, it seems that a firmware update didn't fix the connectivity issue which seems to be very uncommon.
