I bought this router to replace a relatively new tri-band wifi router damaged by lightning. It's relatively compact and easy to set up. The nice surprise was that this router has better range and a good, solid signal. I have been extremely satisfied!

Replaced the crummy router that my cable company gave me with this one. Range and speed are both improved. We "cut the cord" and use our internet for all TV viewing, and his router seems up to the task with good high def video and no studdering.

First EA8500 I purchased on 02/05/16, set up was fine at first. I have 1 device connected wireless, and my roommate has a phone. When his kids came over to play games my network was severely crippled and could only get 10-15 mbps where alone on 5ghz I can get 60-85mbps. The 5 ghz network constantly drops, and the router is only listed as an N when viewed from connections available. Responses from Linksys Customer Support...... oh its defective replace it (after approx 4 hours of the basic tier 1 reboot, change channel, change width, reflash firmware..... Hesitant as I was to return for a replacement as I feared a new one would do the same, went ahead yesterday and got a replacement EA8500. Guess what.... yup same thing. Called yesterday for another 4 hours, where we again flashed firmware, checked channel width, channel, (Mind you I told all reps that I had the optimum channel already elected for fastest speeds), anything they did just slowed it down. I got the response oh well that is all the router can handle..... Ok so this top of the line very expensive AC router can only handle 1 device, and anything more can only output 15mbs...... I told her she was ridiculous. During which I asked her to transfer me to a higher tier tech support (4 times total I asked). After the 4 hours she told me to call back in 2 hours and I would get a tech 4. I could not call back, because I have a life too. So during work today, Comcast came to check my speeds, and we decided to move my VOIP by Vonage after the router to get more speed (it was before). Guess what, this $250 piece of junk can’t do that either. The signal was blocked in the router even after setting up port forwarding and disabling the firewalls. That rep told me I should get a different router.... WOW Linksys/Belkin, nice customer service you have. Your employees read from a script that would only handle basic issues. Where is your support for people that actually do have major problems? I am really ticked as I write this, and real tempted to return for a Netgear or ASUS. This router performs at the same as my previous Wireless N router (E4200 v2) Why did I replace it you ask, because I wanted faster speeds upstairs and a Best Buy rep said I have this one and its awesome handles all my devices and has MU-MIMO and beam forming....... yea only after you by a special adapter for Mu-MIMO or for beam forming will that work. Those adapters do not yet exist in the public market yet. The best buy rep also told me I would be able to throttle each individual device..... wrong again, only on a tri-band router I have heard you can do that (but that may not be 100% accurate). The GUI was the same one for my old router (mind you was about $200 cheaper and 2-3 years old). So in summary, I would stay clear of Linksys/Belkin (unless they go back to being made by Cisco), do not ever call Customer Support for Linksys, unless you are bored and need to kill time, and third, do not listen to Best Buy reps, do your own research, ask people who actually have the model you are interested in. (btw, this was the short version).

We have a 3000 square foot house. Had issues with coverage and was slaving an additional router for my basement. I had 12 devices on my network with the wired slave handling three. The main router could not handle the load. Installed this router and night and day difference. Two rokus simultaneously, camera security system, and various other devices. No issuess, great product.

Upgraded to this router after about 5 years from older Linksys model. Coverage was and still is great however this new router provides a drastic uptick in speed. Instantly noticeable in rooms further away and different floor than router.

I bought this router to correct an issue where my network computers were routinely reporting Public network and denying access despite numerous restarts and amendments to the systems. It had spread to ethernet devices so I had finally had enough. I found many complaints about the issue on line but no one seemed to have a solution. I suspected that the Netgear N router which was my primary router on an extended system was the culprit and searched for a firmware update without success. At whit's end I went to the local Best Buy to see if they had ever heard of such an issue being caused by the router itself. The tech recommended this AC router and said I would have the added advantage of a much extended range which could potentially eliminate the range extender. So I bought the replacement and installed it without the extender. I was about to return it immediately because I still had the public network issue but after creating a new network with a different password I was able to eliminate that issue. So far, in the 4 weeks I have had it on the system, I have had to reset the modem and router only 1 time. That alone makes it worth while, especially with only one router to reset. But not so fast on the one router solution as a deal closer especially if your N router is doing the job for you, or if two N's as I had are working without issues. It may be that there is a slight improvement in range (only marginally so)-- not that I had no range issues within my area of need with the dual N's-- over the Wireless N but it seems that there are many more shadows in the system, which are likely caused by having the signal coming from only one location rather than two widely spaced routers. Think in terms of multiple overhead lights' effect on shadowing. In conclusion I would say that if you are experiencing the public network problem then maybe this is your answer, although whether it needs to be an AC over an N at twice the cost all depends on your expectations. I will say that it's better to have fewer shadow areas in my case because distance coverage was more than adequate under the previous setup.I believe that it will depend on just how far away from the base you need to be. I have had to reinstall the extender to my system in order to have wifi access to many of the areas of our house and property that we require wifi access simply because of the shadows.. So I still have a dual router system and perhaps having the original Netgear N repaired (it's still warranted) will serve me as well. After all, too much range isn't necessarily a blessing for any number of reasons, not the least of which is bandwidth crowding by more over lapping signals and greater exposure to potential hackers..

      Hi, SteveP,

Having an AC router is a good choice especially if you have plans of purchasing devices running on the same standard to take advantage of its full potential. If you are referring to the shadows as the dead spots, adjusting the wireless channel and repositioning the antennas could help reduce them.
