Stuck rebooting
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this router today to replace an aging Netgear router that was struggling to keep up with the numerous wireless devices that were connected to it, such is the way of modern life now. Right out of the box I was having issues with it, namely that it would drop wifi while I was trying to get the setup going on my Microsoft Surface. I switched to wired to get a more stable connection, but only got so far as to it wanting the router's password for the login. Apparently, this password is supposed to be one that you make while setting up the router, but the thing is, I didn't even get to the point where it would let me set up the router to input the password. To top it all off, the default password didn't work either. This made me wonder if the unit I bought was even new, or if it was a refurb or a return that had been set up by the previous owner. I didn't get to mess around with it anymore after that as it randomly rebooted on me and got stuck in a boot loop that I could not get it out of, even the factory reset on the back did absolutely nothing. I should have done more research on this particular router as I found that this is apparently quite the issue, thread after thread of this error, even going back more than a year. Linksys' solutions were little more than having you play phone tag for a few hours before having you RMA it for what could possibly be another lemon, it might last a week, it might last a month. It's obvious this is a hardware issue with how they jump to RMA them, but that these are still circulating around a year after the fact that they knew that something was wrong with them is appalling. I'm definitely going to be returning this unit to get my money back, over three hundred dollars for what amounts to a paperweight. Seeing as how playing the RMA game nets you a two-hour phone call with a clueless technician that can only read a script, all while having to do inane things to the router that would never fix a hardware issue. I took a chance with a Linksys after having stuck to Netgear for such a long time, but it looks like that was my mistake. I will never, ever, even slightly entertain the idea to buy another product by Linksys. Especially with them to be still selling this after it came to light that there were hardware issues.
