When my Netgear router stopped working, I needed an equivalent or better one. I found that in this Linksys router. Best of all, its not netgear.

The EA9500 is Linksys’ flagship router for 2016. It supports the latest wireless technologies and standards most notably MU-MIMO (more on that in a minute). It has a tri-band radio (2 x 5Ghz @2166Mbps + 1 x 2.4 Ghz @ 1000Mbps), eight gigabit ethernet ports, and two USB ports (one being USB 3.0). This router is an absolute beast, both physically and in its performance. It is larger than the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 that it is replacing, which I already thought was a fairly large router. I have been using it now for several days and have had no hiccups in performance of any kind on my wired or wireless devices and with these specs I didn’t anticipate that I would. No problems streaming HD video to multiple devices even while simultaneously streaming a 1080p game over Geforce Now which is incredibly bandwidth intensive. MU-MIMO is one of the most exciting new features of this router. Look it up if you’ve never heard of it but basically it allows devices to have their own communication stream to the router thus providing huge benefits in wireless efficiency. Unfortunately, it’s a feature that I won’t be able to fully benefit from until I get at least a couple of MU-MIMO capable devices, for which there aren’t many on the market today. You can bet though that in a few years all mid and high end devices will support this so you are really doing yourself a favor by future-proofing your wireless setup now. Probably the best thing about this router besides the performance and future ready features is the setup and configuration. The setup wizard is one of the simplest I have used. It helps you every step of the way from getting connected to the net to setting up your network SSIDs and security. It really is just plug and play—but plug and play done the right way. In the past so many routers have provided something that just got you connected, without bothering to help you secure your network which is why so many people would have unsecured wireless networks which is a really bad thing. You can also setup the router from a mobile app provided by Linksys. One of my favorite features is I can set up a new device using WPS right from the app which is really convenient. My biggest disappointment with this router is the lack of security for the guest network. It provides an insecure network that prompts you for a password when you connect, but even this is cleartext. I don't really use the guest network that often so for now I’m just disabling it and will reconsider it if Linksys enables security through a firmware update. I did not test the external storage, media prioritization, or USB functions as I don't use them. Overall this is an excellent router that won't become obsolete any time soon.

      Hi, Titan5178,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and we're glad to hear that you found this router an absolute beast on its performance. We're just curious on your observation pertaining to the router's Guest Network, and we'll share it with our Engineering Team for reconsideration. As you know, the Guest network is a feature of Linksys Wi-Fi Routers and Smart Wi-Fi Routers that provides a separate wireless network for Internet Access only. This will appear unsecured in the list of available wireless networks and you can automatically connect to it. However, when you open a web browser, you will be required to enter the Guest password before you can access the Internet.

This is by far the best router I've ever owned. The adjustable antennas really make a difference. Had trouble getting a 5g signal on the patio but not now.

Bought this to have wireless out on the dock-which works great 100' out in the yard-from router. We also use for multiple devices running at same time.

I picked up this router because my ASUS AC87R router was starting to give me trouble, especially with streaming video. The router is fast, has good range, an abundance of ports, and very importantly, it is stable. I haven't had to reboot once because of performance issues. Why only four stars? The features are pretty basic for this price point. I am kind of missing ASUS's security features such as network based virus / malware protection and VPN capabilities. This router has neither. I am hoping to see an expanded feature set in future firmware releases, or with some third party firmware such as DDWRT. No complaints at all with the features that are present, was just hoping for more.
