Game play reminds me of Dark Souls. It is not quite the same though. It isn't as challenging as Dark Souls series at all. Not a lot of customization available.

If you're looking for a Dark Souls experience, this is not it. Dark Souls 1&2 were great and LotF tries its best but ultimately comes up missing.

If you are not a seasoned veteran of Dark Souls II, do not bother with this game. Your character will be wiped out by the First Warden as soon as you fight with him because the controls of the game are very difficult.
Getting wiped out over and over again on the first level is no fun at all.

Gears of War meets Diablo

I played this game before and after the large update. The update fixed many of the basic issues with the game, like the hugely annoying screen tearing, over-all game smoothness and combat issues. The game was almost unplayable before the update.
I picked this up on release-day mainly because people were saying it looked like Diablo and I have enjoyed playing Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition - PlayStation 4. I have played Demon's Souls as well, and thought it was great, however contained a very frustrating save-game setup as well as being largely difficult. Still a good game though. Lords of the Fallen seems to be a perfect blend of action-RPG and solid combat. It is fast paced and tosses you right into the action. The weapon menu system is almost an exact copy from Diablo, seems like they borrowed things from other top games.
Lords of the Fallen is highly combat oriented and while it's not a simple button-mash game, it also isn't too entirely complex. There is an enemy lock button which locks your eyes on that enemy, you simply need to rotate the enemy avoiding his direct hits and strike whenever you can. If done correctly you can easily defeat most enemies quickly.
What they did right:
+ Solid graphics, gritty with beautiful environments. Smooth running, besides when loading/saving.
+ Great save/checkpoint feature, making it quite winning as compared to Demon's Souls style.
+ The game is fun, and I never want to stop playing. It keeps you going with it's fast-paced action and enveloping world.
+ Takes up a surprisingly small amount of space on the HD. About 9gig (after the update, 5gig before).
+ Gives you the option to save, or to build up your xp points. Neat feature, but may cause frustration.
+ Has an old-school feel, with bosses and all.
What could use some work...
- Very uneven difficulty. Some enemies are extremely easy to defeat, others it takes 10 tries causing a lot of unnecessary frustration.
- At times the over-all game control seems sluggish and the combat accuracy seems off. Some of this could be caused by too much gear, slowing you down.
- The story is a little jumpy at times and really not too deep and meaningful. Due to this, you care little for the characters and what their objective is. The game focuses more on fun exploration and combat.
- Voice-acting is cheesy and quick.
I hear the game is about 17-hours long, and I plan on replaying it to achieve the Platinum trophy. It is a fun, great looking game and over-all quite enjoyable to play. There is a huge amount of frustration, depending on how you play and when you save.
Recommended, but be cautions to save if you feel you may get too frustrated and punch a wall. This is not a big hit game like Diablo, but it is fun to pass the time until something better comes out.

With gameplay and difficulty very similar to Dark Souls, I loved this game.
This game to me seemed more polished than Dark Souls and with a better story. If you enjoy a challenge this one's for you.

Challenging and Rewarding

Lords of the Fallen is like Demon's Souls but set in a universe more akin to Diablo. It has the challenging gameplay you expect, but it also has some of the most beautiful and detailed graphics I've seen.
I do have to dock a star since it's a little buggy, though. If they patch the issues, I can see this one being worth 5 stars.

Great gameplay but buggy.

At the time of release, including the day 1 5GB patch, the PS4 version is a buggy mess. Random crashes. Voice acting stops working frequently. The worst of all... The 3rd boss from the end of the game died but the follow up cinematic didn't launch. Now when I load my save, the boss just lays there and the story progression is blocked. Since the game uses autosave there's no way to reload a previous save. My 16 hour save is wasted. I ended up having to watch the last of the game on YouTube because I was unable to finish the game.
It's a real shame because if you ignore the massive number of bugs, the gameplay is fantastic. The world is very well designed, and I found myself wanting to explore every corner of the map. If you're a fan of Dark Souls then you'll enjoy this game.
My recommendation is to wait a few months before picking this up. Give them a chance to iron out the bugs and hopefully produce a more stable product. Until then, skip this.

For what it is its a great game. Good intro style game for people nervous about the difficult Souls series. It does have a few hiccups with combat and AI but if you die it's becsuse you've earned it. A nice feeling of accomplishment for beating bosses without the unforgiving difficulty of Dark Souls.

Not as good as the Dark Souls series of games, but not a bad clone.
