Rabbids and Mario never entered my mind as a game, let alone a fun game, yet here it is made. I entered the game with middle of the road expectations and am happy to say they were met and more. I'd give this game a 4.5 out of 5, honestly. Since this isn't a half star system I'll give it the extra half in favor rather than against, since the developers put alot of heart and soul into it and it shows. It's a fantastic game but not perfect. The graphics for the switch are great, the gamplay solid (xcom-lite I'd describe it) and the story while simple, filled with chuckle worthy moments and nods to Nintendo fans. The music composed by Grant Kirkhope at times reaching moments that will surprise and probably make you smile. One chapter boss probably now known quite well being a highlight. While there are far more positives then negatives it should be noted that I experienced three instances in my total experience with the game getting 100% at 30+ hours, the game hiccuping and quitting out of the blue. Lucky for me I save often so this never impeded the experience for me beyond an annoying glitch, though I felt it important to at least mention. In an otherwise fantastic game, this was it's more glaring negative, though not at all game breaking or detrimental. If your curious and like action strategy games, I'd recommend and give this a go!

The mix of classic Mario characters with the goofy Rabbids creates a fun and quirky atmosphere. Combat is tactical but accessible, making it great for both newcomers and seasoned players. The colorful visuals and catchy soundtrack add to the game's overall appeal. It’s a unique and enjoyable experience that’s definitely worth picking up for Switch owners.

In all my years, I'd never think I would see Mario and Ubisoft's Rabbids clashing together, even with some of the spinoffs I've seen Nintendo do over the years (like Hyrule Warriors, blending Dynasty Warriors and The Legend of Zelda). In this game, players take control of Mario and two other characters as they try to restore the balance of the Mushroom Kingdom after an invention in progress goes terribly wrong. The two characters that follow Mario can be swapped out, and you can have one character from Mario's side of the family and one Rabbid, each with their own unique stances but are otherwise combined into categories of four, making the total amount of playable characters eight. The gameplay revolves around turns and moving pieces into strategic points to complete the objectives the game sets, such as taking out all the enemies (who are raving rabbids, by the way!), to getting to the end of the map while avoiding the onslaught of enemies that will get in your way. The difficulty can range from simple to occasionally frustrating. I found that some of the earlier maps were harder than the last world (there are four in total, by the way), and sometimes the randomness of strategy games can really wreck a good plan, such as status ailments that can affect your team's performance. I enjoyed the game, but eventually found it tedious towards the end. I still enjoyed it, and my younger brothers were able to do the same. I put about 25 or so hours into finishing the game, and I highly recommend a game like this if you want to play a game on the fly. It's light on story, but there are plenty of challenges to do, as well as a coop mode (sadly only for additional challenges).

A Strange Mix That Somehow Works

Like many people, I thought that the idea of a Mario and Rabbids crossover game would be bad. Then they revealed it would be an Xcom-esque tactical game and things changed pretty quickly. What was more or less considered a joke ended up turning into the best Switch exclusive so far in my opinion. I'm going to start with the elephant in the room. The rabbids are here in full force. The minions of gaming can be annoying at times. But I felt they were handled well here. Having a comedic straight man in Mario and Beep-O helps a lot, and the humor isn't quite as 'LOLRANDOM' as I was worried about outside of the beginning. Beyond that the story is pretty simple overall. Save mushroom kingdom from a thing. There are some great parts (a certain boss comes to mind), a solid amount of fun humor, and general a relaxed and fun atmosphere. I want to give special note to the music. I absolutely adored it. It was done by Grant Kirkhope. So if you, like me, grew up on Banjo Kazooie, expect a nice hit in the nostalgia there. The music help keeps the worlds alive and fun. The gameplay itself really is 'baby's first Xcom.' And honestly, I think that's great. It's a very much simplified version of Xcom where there are only three chances to hit (0, 50, 100), which makes a lot less feel bad moments of missing off an 80% hit. The gameplay does have depth as well though. The simpler style makes it feel a bit more puzzle like than a typical strategy game. Which, in my opinion, is a good thing. It's much less dependent on RNG and you're given a good amount of customization for your characters in terms of skills and weapons. For the amount of content, I had original felt it was kind of light. It took me about 30 hours to finish the game at 100% with nothing below perfect and a lot of backtracking and exploring. Realistically you could likely finish the story in 10-15 hours if you wanted. But you'd be missing out on a good amount of content. Beyond the story, there are 10 challenges per world and some more beyond that. They can be fairly tough. Some of them I had to revisit later in the game when I had better weapons, and the final challenges offered a good amount of challenge. Overall, it's a fun strategy game of a genre we haven't had quite yet from Nintendo. Big props to Ubisoft for this one. They knocked this game out of the park.

Greatest surprise of the year so far. Amazing game! Extremely addicting experience from the start to the end. Gameplay mechanics are easy to learn, intuitive and the menus are very straightforward. It's the perfect introduction to people who never played turn-based strategy games before or even to some players who are not big fans of the genre (like me). However, this doesn't mean it's not challenging. Some battles and boss encounters can require quite clever solutions and some tries, but it's never unfair or too hard. Also, it's fun to explore the 4 worlds searching for hidden chests and other collectibles.

    Mario XCOM

Probably the most common comparison made for this game. In case you are not familiar with XCOM or its gameplay style, essentially it's a turn based strategy game. Usually two teams, either controlled by two players, or in story mode - one player controlled team versus AI controlled team. The player can control his/her team selecting one character at a time, pointing where to move in the map (viewed from a high camera angle), choosing to then attack an enemy, or use character specific abilities - heal, increase defense, increase attack, or some other character unique power. Typically, the flow of the game is slow due to the individual team control and strategic approach, which makes this genre not as popular as shooter or action games. For those of us who enjoy thinking about our next move (like in chess), or risk possibilities of waiting a turn instead of moving ahead so a charged ability (usually charged by turns instead of real time) can be used for greater effect later, it is quite an addicting fun experience. In this layout, Ubisoft and Nintendo created a great xcom style adventure, making the most unlikely mix of Mario and Rabbids (the pre-minion minions like rabbits). Without spoiling the story (yes story in a Mario game), Rabbids get in the Mushroom Kingdom, naturally make a mess in fabric of Mario's reality, and things keep getting interesting and crazy from there. Story progresses in a linear open world style. Players can revisit the worlds and replay chapters for better scores. In between actual battle segments, the player can explore parts of the open world, solve basic puzzles to unlock collectible art or points currency for upgrades. Aside from strategic components, characters use megaman like arm-cannons to attack enemies. Family friendly animated violence. They can be acquired with in-game currency. Characters for the team can be chosen and upgraded, each with their unique abilities, such as Luigi being a sniper, Rabbid Peach a healer, and Rabbid Luigi a tech character. The roaster inspires strategy and experimentation that extends the replay value. Visuals are cartoon style like most Mario games, but in HD, and unique artistic approach from Ubisoft's team. Soundtrack is fantastic with epic and goofy orchestrated soundtrack that perfectly fits either exploration or battles. The game is a great addition to anyone with a nintendo switch who likes strategy games. It is fun and family friendly, offering versus and cooperative mode with options that allow for playing with kids, all the way to technically challenging settings for experienced players. Minor negatives for this near perfect game are that teams can only have 3 characters max, and that occasionally enemies are able to shoot your team from angles that are not physically possible (shot is clearly seen going through a wall). Though that happened only twice and didn't distract much from overall fun experience.

This may very well be the second best game of Switch after Zelda, and is the best exclusive Switch game thus far. The game is funny, containing all of the humor that has come to be associated with the Rabbids. The gameplay is fun yet challenging. The ability to play levels at a lower difficulty is s great feature. Experienced players will enjoy the challenge while newer players can still make progress. The strategy required to win each battle us varied and a constant source of fun. Perfect for pick up and play sessions as well as all night marathons.

When Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was first announced, I had my doubts. First, I've never really been into the Rabbids. Also, it just seem like an odd pairing. However I decided to give this game a try because I love my Nintendo Switch and I wanted more things to play on the go. What I found was a fun and yet challenging strategy game that kept me coming back for more in order to get perfects on each battle. Sure good sign of a strategy game. I recommend for anyone looking for a change of pace and or is interested in trying a strategy game for the first time. Veterans of games like this will find plenty to enjoy as well!

This game is what if Mario & Rabbid franchisee had a baby with XCOM. This is a turn based strategy game like XCOM. Each team moves their players alternatively and attacks opponents. The variety of skills are well thought, worlds are varied. The atmosphere is pleasant and never looks dull. However openness is missing. Extra optional puzzles are good. The campaign story is funny but nothing exceptional. Gameplay is solid if you are playing with higher difficulty levels. A must play for strategy lovers.

It’s a great game, when you first start playing it, you can’t help but think yourself, “I can’t believe I wasted my money on this”. Give it about 15 minutes and you’ll be hooked. Very engaging puzzles, and gameplay requires deep strategy often requiring you to think 10 to 15 moves ahead to become proficient. But the game itself does a great job of easing you into it from beginning to end. Not nearly as complex as something like World of Warcraft, but just the right amount of customization ability.

I'm a big fan of strategy tactics-style games and this bizarre combo is a fantastic addition to the Switch's library and gives it some much-needed diversity. The powers are great and the Rabbids are hilarious. If you're in the mood for a different flavor of Mario, this is it! I would say it's a bit complicated for those under 10 or so, especially past the mid-way point where you really have to think ahead to avoid slaughter.

    Goofy, Simple XCOM

Mario + Rabbids allows players to experience gameplay similar to the XCOM series without having to deal with the base building and menu juggling that happens outside of the tactical maps. Weapon Upgrades are straight forward and your ability progression doesn't require a great deal of thought. So what the game ends up boiling down to is picking your units and using them effectively on the map. Will you bring Luigi, a sniper into a map with close quarters scenarios? How will you deal with the area of effect of Rabbid Mario's shotgun? These along with the different abilities each fighter carries adds just enough depth to keep you on your toes as your enemies spread out and do their best to exploit your bad plays. Mario + Rabbids is a very fair game throughout but once you start getting into a groove it is quick to remind you when you are too confident. Ignoring the cover system and/or the effects and abilities of various enemies on the map will often lead you to losing at least one character. I lost count of the times I forgot that activating skills that cause you to shoot an enemy when it moves can have dire consequences when a melee berserker type unit comes into view (they get free movement whenever they take damage). It's a fun game that can satisfy the tactical itch without having to get bogged down worrying about what is going to happen 3-4 maps down the line. Sometimes you want that extra strategic depth, but after rolling through so many strategy games it was refreshing to just let myself enjoy the moment to moment actions.

This game seems like the perfect jumping on point for someone to the turn-based strategy genre of games. It's simple and removes a lot of the random chance that could make or break other games in this style. Only downsides are the sudden increases in difficulty, and the fact that the whole game can be ideally played with just the few opening characters, leaving many characters felling like a tacked on addition.

To begin with this game maybe a hit or miss depending on who's playing it. This game is surprisingly fun and easy to get into, yes it is simpler version of other strategy games. If you have played xcom before then you will be pretty familiar with how this game runs, but in a much simpler pace. The game is not trying to become something that it's not, it's not as serious as xcom when it comes to mechanics, upgrades and stuff. It's still a fun game to get into, explore the world and its colors. Check it out if you have a switch and if you like this kinds of game or you could wait for a sale if you don't feel like spending $60.00 on a game like this. It's good to know that the switch is getting 3rd party support in some ways, we also have to support the developers who spend money on a system with limited catalogs as of right now.
