    Above its size

About the size of an alarm clock (5" x 5" x 7" tall), this speaker is unrepentantly designed in the very retro classic style of Marshall concert speakers, although the case is entirely plastic. Sound: Pleasantly, this sounds very good for its size. It's good enough to fill a small room and it does not distort at max volume. On top of the speaker, it has volume, bass and treble controls. If using the 'Marshall Voice' app, it has a five-band eq with presets (Rock, spoken, pop, flat, and of course, custom). Changing bass, treble or volume on the speaker simultaneously reflects on the app. Other physical controls: On the back of the speaker, there is a very discreet Bluetooth pairing button. The front has the after mentioned vol, bass and treble, and also a small play/pause at the left and a mic attention (turns on Alexa without the wake word) / privacy. At the front bottom of the speaker, on the copper-painted bar, there are four LEDs that change sequence and colors based on activity (Alexa colors, changing audio controls, etc.). Normally there are no lights on the speaker, except for Alexa notices or if the mic is off. The power cable is a 110v to C7 plug on the speaker, removable. It does not have an external adapter. Also it does not have a battery. It requires to be plugged in. Note that it also works with 240v, if traveling. Audio sources: - Note that it does not have an Aux In nor a headphones output. This speaker is really meant to be used either with Alexa voice or from a phone - Airplay 2: Works really well from Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, macOS, AppleTV) and other airplay devices. For example from the iPhone, I can start playing on the phone, and then send the audio to this speaker and simultaneously to other Airplay2 speakers in the house, or AppleTVs. It works well with other brands also, and without delay. Volume can be controlled individually for each speaker and the whole group. - Spotify Connect: From the Spotify app on a phone, at the bottom left, select this speaker and Spotify can stream directly to the speaker, using the app as a remote, but the app or phone are no longer needed while it continues playing. It does not require a subscription. - Amazon Music: Besides Alexa, the Amazon music app on a phone can play directly to the speaker. - Bluetooth: The speaker supports Bluetooth 5.0, which provides better range and it's better on the phone's battery, but it could only connect using the SBC Bluetooth codec. It didn't support aptX on an Android 10 phone. It sounds fine regardless and volume can be controlled from the phone's volume controls, from the speaker or the Marshall Voice app. Initial setup: Initial setup requires the Marshall Voice app from either Apple or Google app stores. The pairing process from an iPhone was flawless: It first detected the speaker via Bluetooth, found the WiFi network and asked for the Wi-Fi password. It did not require messing around with WiFi settings on the phone like other devices I used. Then it found a firmware upgrade for the speakers that took a couple minutes. Worked just fine. Alexa setup is optional. It's simple and it also requires one to have the Alexa app on the phone to finish the process. Note that this speaker supports both 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz Wi-Fi, which It's great and not usual. Amazon Alexa: This is an 'Alexa enabled' devices. Just like any other non-amazon Alexa devices I use, there are some things it cannot do. For example, communications like calling someone through Alexa des not work. Also Apple Music through Alexa does not work either. The Apple Music skill is very restricted, and I have similar issues with other Alexa speakers. These are really Alexa limitations, but keep it in mind. Pairing this speaker with other Alexa devices in music groups is supported, although it did not work in my case. The speaker shows as available to add in Alexa groups but ultimately fails for me. It might be a temporary issue. Plus: - Great, powerful sound, with deep but not overpowering bass. Clear Mids and Highs. It's really a step above most speakers of this size. - Well executed Alexa integration. - Airplay2 worked flawlessly in a household with a mesh Wi-Fi and multiple speakers and Apple devices. - Spotify Connect works out of the box. - Integrated power, Class-D amplifier. - Phone app is simple and intuitive, and not required besides setup. It shows the name of the song that’s playing (Even for Bluetooth, if the phone provides it), source service and cover-art (if available). Cons: - Does not support Chromecast Audio. A separate version of this speaker replaces Amazon/Alexa for Google Assistant/Chromecast. - Bluetooth does not support aptX codecs for Android. Other considerations: - I find the styling too forced. It's all plastic while evoking the classic Marshall styling. The long bar controls on the top are a bit much, and the copper bar at the bottom of the grille is really painted plastic. - That said, it's very well constructed, with solid rubber feet (Which is good because it puts out a lot of sound). The enclosure does not produce vibration sounds. It's thick and solid. Who makes this: - Marshall branded products are produced by a Swedish company, Zounds Industries, that also produces Urbanears headphones.

We wanted a better Alexa enabled speaker, as we already have a bunch of Echo Dots around the house but never splurged on a higher end model. I’m a little familiar with Marshall Equipment as I have their Major III headset and really like them, so when I saw they had the new Uxbridge smart speaker coming out we figured on giving it a try. Unboxing and first looks: The speaker arrived in protected in a nice display box along with a power cord and quick start guide. It’s actually smaller than I thought it would be but it’s surprisingly heavy and built very sturdy. It looks like all the other Marshall speakers I’ve seen on display at the stores, and has the familiar cloth speaker grille with the Marshall logo on it, and looks really nice, sort of like the old school amps they make. The top has three strips for controlling volume, bass and treble, they look like Frets on a guitar. There are also two buttons, one on each side that control “Play/Pause” and “Mute”. On the back there’s the power connector and a Bluetooth pairing button, “it’s almost hidden”. There’s no power brick, the amp is built into the enclosure and you don’t have to worry about that laying around on the floor or try to find a place to hide it. Using: When I set up the speaker I installed the “Marshall Voice” app and followed the instruction on setting it up within the app. Since the speaker does have built in WiFi you have to connect to its built in WiFi first through your phone and then set up access for it to connect to your network. After that was completed I immediately received a message stating that there was an updated firmware available and it needed to be installed before proceeding. The update was simple, and completed quickly without a hitch. Within the app you can control a built in equalizer and there’s a good selection of pre-set configurations if you don’t feel like messing around with the controls yourself. “Remember there are also controls on top of the device to adjust Bass/Treble so you don’t absolutely have to have the app to adjust those settings, just the app gives you finer control over those. Now after using the Alexa app on my phone to connect to our Amazon / Alexa account we were off to give it a try. We had a delivery earlier in the day and I hadn’t erased the notification from the Spots and noticed that there are four very small LEDs on the front that flash in correspondence with the Alexa alerts, “they light up for volume levels also”. We started sampling some music through Amazon and were very impressed by the sound quality of this little speaker. It actually got plenty loud and had great bass to it. My wife was very impressed with how well this sounded over the Dots, the sound was better than some of my other Bluetooth portable speakers by a good bit. I have hearing problems and some speakers just don’t sound good or put out clean enough sound for me to be able to hear them very well. This Uxbridge speaker blew them all away for sound quality. I can hear everything from across the room “which none of the others have been able to do so far”, “they sound good, but I have to be pretty close”, but this one was just amazing. Impressions: We’ve been using this for a few days now and we are still enjoying just how well this sounds and music just sounds great. It’s loud enough to fill our fairly large living/dining area and it just doesn’t take up much space at all. We’ve had no problem connecting it to her Note 10, My S20, and our Galaxy Tab S. It even connected to an old Asus tablet I have “using that to stream some music from my NAS”. She likes using Spotify and hasn’t had any issues with it either. We are definitely listening to more music through this over our Dots. I have found a couple things though, one, there are no audio in/out ports, it would be nice to have them so you can connect a device directly to it and not have to rely solely on a wireless connection. Next, I paired this up with our TV through Bluetooth. I have other portable speakers / headphones I do this with also so I can have a speaker close to me due to my hearing problems. While I had no problem getting this to connect there’s a terrible where the audio does not match up well at all with video on the screen, “it’s like watching those old martial arts movies that have been voiced over”. I have multiple Bluetooth transmitters for the TV and although they all connect without a problem I cannot get the audio to sync with the video. I’m hoping a firmware update in the future will help this issue. Otherwise for listening to music or using Alexa this device works great and for audio alone it’s outstanding for its size. If you are looking for a great sounding device, and mainly play audio through Amazon, Spotify, or through your phone/tablet, I think you’ll be pleased with this one. If you want to use it as an auxiliary speaker for your TV then you may have to wait till they get the synching problem resolved. I’ll keep messing around with it and see if I can get it to work as this speaker sounds so good I really want this to work also.

Hello, thank you for your review and great feedback. In response to your two points: the Uxbridge is a true Wireless speaker and doesn't offer any wired connections such as the 3.5mm aux input; this model is designed for high quality audio and to account for any streaming interruptions, there is a buffering delay built-in across all inputs which results in the lag between audio and video outputs. This means that the Uxbridge speakers are more suitable to audio playback rather than Home Theatre systems. If you have any further questions, please reach out to support@marshallheadphones.com.

Powerful, crisp, and clear sound little fella

    Posted .

-- Summary -- First time ever owning a Marshall speaker, I have only seen or noticed them at small concerts, parties, but in their bigger versions. The Marshall UXBridge is a small yet powerful device with a very crisp and clear sound, even at maximum volume. - Favorable: very small, extremely powerful for its size with an outstanding crisp and clear, surrounding-like sound (even at max volume). - Not-favorable: It is power-wired, so you need to have access to a nearby AC power outlet. I’d guess a rechargeable battery one wouldn’t be such powerful nor small and much heavier, so it is a compromise. In addition, it feels like its design was intended for it to not be portable. -- Basic Setup -- First, locate a place (bookcase, desk, etc.) near an outlet or bring an extension cord, or bring an extension cord to where the speaker will be placed. Next proceed to unpack it, connect the power cable, and plug it in. Before even trying Alexa or the smart phone app. I decided to go with Bluetooth from my phone and laptop. Connecting to different devices just requires pressing the “Bluetooth button” on the rear side of the speaker and voila. Sound quality was amazing. -- Wireless configuration and connectivity -- Unfortunately, the only way to configure the device for network Wi-fi connectivity is through the Marshal Voice App, which is only available for iPhone and Android. iPhone’s Marshall voice app rating is less than 2 (albeit a small number of reviews), fortunately it worked fine with no issues configuring the speaker. Bluetooth sound is good enough, but after configuring the network access, I tried Spotify Connect, what an experience, sound is just amazing. I am more than happy with this device. Even one speaker would be enough for a big room party. The next step was enabling Alexa. To configure Alexa, of course you need to have an Amazon account, and you need to register the device (which are things I don’t like, but those are the constraints on having these devices, they don’t come standalone). My family was impressed by how well the Speaker picked our voices, but we were a little scared though, even in our broken English, it was able to recognize our commands. I am thinking about removing Alexa altogether, and just keep the Bluetooth and Spotify Connect. -- Sound -- I usually prefer stereo sound, I like the fact that different instruments can be heard coming from different areas; however, this device made me forget about that requirement, and although not portrayed as such, the sound feels like surrounding. I am gladly surprised that at maximum volume, the sound is crisp and clear. In other similar size speakers or even the bigger ones, you can clearly notice a background or vibrating noise coming out of the speaker, when stressed. I am finishing writing this review while playing Vivaldi on this speaker, what a pleasure it feels. -- Other notes -- - There is no Aux input, so no wired sound connection. I understand why, it is a smart speaker that is supposed to be connected wirelessly to some other intelligent device or service. - (not tested) Apple Airplay 2: Although we have iPhone devices, we did not even think about setting Airplay 2. - (not tested) Multi speakers: one of the attributes advertised is how well it would work combined with other UXBridge speakers. I haven’t tested this, I’d image one specific scenario to have such configuration would be in an office environment, where the same music/announcements are played on all speakers. For home use, I am not sure how well this configuration would be, well except if it is configured for some full-blast party.

    Classic looks and sound

    Posted .

The Marshall Uxbridge is nice for someone who is looking for a WiFi enabled speaker that supports Airplay 2 and Alexa with a classic guitar amp vibe. With its traditional Marshall tweed grill and topped with gold control frets, the Uxbridge is classic yet unique compared to other WiFi enabled speakers. The Uxbridge lacks the leather wrapped exterior and control knobs of its pricier siblings but brings an affordable option to their line. The front features lights that provide feedback on volume, bass, and treble adjustments as well as an indication of Alexa activity. This particular model supports Alexa, Spotify Connect, and Airplay 2, in addition to Bluetooth 4.2, providing a nice assortment of modern connectivity. Alexa responded well as long as the volume wasn’t too high and Airplay 2 worked great out of the box. Though I was disappointed to see the shared light array in front light red when the microphone is muted (there is also a light on top that illuminates red), I can see where it may be beneficial for someone using it on a bookshelf where the top may not be as visible. An option to modify the behavior in the app would be nice. Though the sound is fair for its size, the mid range drops off when listening off-axis while bass is nonexistent. At this price point, you are paying a little more for looks then you are performance unfortunately. Where it lacks in fidelity, it makes up for in distortion free volume. For such a small speaker, the Uxbridge is unapologetically loud. If you are looking to crank it to 11 or just want a nice looking speaker, the Uxbridge delivers.

Perfect Speaker for my home office!

    Posted .

The Marshall Uxbridge Smart Speaker is a great addition to my home-office (and the timing couldn't be better since I'm in it a LOT these days primarily working from home). It is the perfect size for a bookshelf and looks pretty cool sitting on one (see picture). It's a smart speaker with the nifty, classic 'Marshall' amp design known around the world. Careful when unpacking it, as it is slightly heavier than you would expect it to be. Upon unpacking set-up is easy enough. You (of course) download the app, sign into it, sign into wi-fi and follow a few easy steps and you're connected. It's that easy to get it going, but you can get quite a bit more complicated than that if you wish. Having Alexa built in is great. We're already an Alexa home, so one more speaker (particularly one that fits so well in my office) is fine with me. Once you're in the app with set-up, you can connect Alexa to your existing account. If you have all of your Alexa devices on the same network that enables some cool stuff--all speaker play is one of the most fun. If you want to hear music in every room so long as you have an Alexa in the other rooms on the same network you will. You can use them as an intercom system, a voice or video call system or lots of other cool, Alexa enabled apps. My personal favorite these days is to have Alexa play my favorite news and entertainment podcasts while I'm working. Or play the days news (it usually starts with local news and works it's way out to the world) or weather, or even games like 20 questions or guess the song. It's a neat addition to the office, a helpful 'smart speaker' and music played through it sounds terrific as well (though it could use just a little more base--due mostly to the size of the speaker than anything else). You can stream music from your Amazon account, or any bluetooth enabled device thanks to the bluetooth settings. All and all a very cool, convenient and nice looking addition to my home office!

    Great in-home speaker

    Posted .

I will say I was looking forward to getting this speaker to review. It was smaller than I expected (5 x 6.1 x 4.8-in), but still has that cool vintage look. Mine is the Alexa enabled smart speaker. I hear the Google assistant version will also be offered. Voice response works very well when asking Alexa to do something. Sound quality – Vocals are crystal clear, low end is better at low to med volume. This speaker must be plugged into a wall outlet, No Battery, so please keep that in mind when considering your purchase. This is a great speaker for a small to medium size room where you would like to enjoy music and all the controls that Alex offers. The VOICE app I found to be a bit finicky. I had to go through set up twice. Hopefully an update can fix that. When connected to Bluetooth or Wi-Fi you can control the music, volume and sound quality with your standard player interface. The app offers a 5 step EQ (Bass, Low, Mid, Upper, Treble). The rocker buttons on the top of the speaker work very well. You can click multiple times for a quick change or hold the button down for more gradual change. The 4 lights at the front bottom of the speaker chow the gradual change of the button. Each light has about 4 light levels until the next light is lit. Nice touch. No on/off button, but you can turn off the voice mic. Overall, I am really enjoying this little speaker in my office. Looks cool and built like a tank. Another quality built speaker from Marshall.

Love the product, Not the App

    Posted .

I already use the Marshall Acton II at my office and love the sound, design and build quality. I just moved into a new apartment and decided the not so gracefully named "Uxbridge" would be a nice addition. I was right. It has a nice small footprint so it goes just about anywhere. The sound is perhaps even better than the Acton II (I didn't side-by-side) and pumps out enough volume to get me in trouble with the neighbors already. The long strips on the top of the Marshall are the Volume, Bass and Treble rockers. A nice touch for reaching blindly in the dark. The small buttons on each side are for Play/Pause and On/Off of the Alexa Microphone. Alexa works as expected. Now the one downside? The odd Marshall Voice App. It frustrated me when I obtained the Acton II and it hasn't gotten better. I thought I would never get connected...and then I just went to my phone's Bluetooth setting. Works now. If you can,try to ignore the app and enjoy the speaker!

Great compact speaker! Small, but super powerful.

Overall Thoughts I am already obsessed with my Uxbridge Voice speaker. Overall, I think this is a great speaker and would recommend to anyone looking to upgrade the sound in their home. This is also a great secondary speaker for people looking to take advantage of multi-room sound. Impressive for it's size The Uxbridge's small compact design makes fits perfectly in my kitchen. I already own the Acton II with Alexa support and was super excited to add Uxbridge to my collection. I included a picture so you can compare the size. Sound Quality The sound quality meets the high quality standard that I expect from Marshall speakers. I was really surprised at how loud this little speaker can get! It's powerful enough to fill my entire studio apartment with sound. Voice Integration I also love that it has Alexa voice integration so I can easily use voice commands to play music and get updates about the weather, etc. It also picks up my voice really well.

Great little speak with a big sound and Alexa!

    Posted .

Was excited to give this little guy a go. Being a metal head in my youth, I have always loved the look of Marshall amps and equipment so to have a bluetooth Marshall device with that same classic styling was very nostalgic for me. Upon receiving, I opened the box. The device was very well packed in tastefully designed packaging. The speaker basically only comes with a power cord and instructions. Setup was a breeze with the Marshall app which I had dowloaded from the app store. Just connect to the speaker via bluetooth and input your wifi password and you are basically set to go! This speaker has no battery which means it is not portable. The speaker is small enough to be portable, and I am surprised it doesn't have a battery. Once set up, I took it for a test drive using Apple Airplay on my phone. The quality of the sound on this little speaker is surprising! As a self professed metal head, it may not get as loud as I'd like, but the quality of the sound is undeniable. It really sounds great. Aesthetically, as I mentioned it has the classic Marshall style that brings back many memories, but I have to confess to being a little disappointed in the plastic construction. I admit that I don't know why, but it just doesn't lend towards the quality that is obviously inside of that plastic case. That being said, it's not enough of a reason to take a star away as the device functions flawlessly and the quality is in the sound. I would absolutely buy again.

    Small size, big sound

    Posted .

This is a solid unit that definitely feels premium. And the sound quality emanating from this speaker validates that first impression. Be sure to do any suggested firmware update first (I did), and then download their free Voice app (available for both Android and Apple). Once that's done, connect the speaker to your devices via bluetooth and wifi (do both for maximum utility). Finally, connect to your Amazon Alexa account for greatest flexibility. Alexa is very responsive on this unit, and can switch between wifi and bluetooth at your command. You can stream music from your phone or other device or have Alexa select music to meet your wishes. Use your imagination. I had Alexa wake me at my desired time with music that I chose. While I only have one unit, this speaker can communicate with multiple units in other rooms of your home for whole-house music. This little unit packs a big sound. You won't be disappointed.

If you are looking for a louder speaker, we recommend selecting one of the larger models. The Tufton is the loudest portable speaker available.

    Solidly built, great sound

This is a solid, easy-to-use, great-sounding speaker with one little missing feature that kept me from giving it five stars. It doesn't come with an aux in port so you can't plug in wired audio from a TV, projector, or some device like that. If that's not an issue for you then I think you'll love this speaker. Ninety-nine percent of the time I just want to play audio via bluetooth, but I do have a projector in my living room for watching movies or sports (back when we still had sports). When watching video there is just enough lag time in the bluetooth audio that it's annoyingly out of sync. That just seems to be a feature of bluetooth because at least three different speakers I've tried have the problem. So, it would have been nice to use this speaker, which I'd planned to put in the living room anyway, cabled to the audio output from my projector. Putting that issue aside, though, this is a great speaker. It's not too big, but solidly built. It uses a regular AC cord into the wall without a bulky DC converter. It has that awesome retro-looking Marshall design that looks great almost anywhere. And most importantly, it sounds fantastic. I found the default settings to be perfectly fine, but it's nice you can adjust the equilizer settings if you need to. I found the setup to be pretty easy with the Android app. I did get an error on the first attempt, but the second time it worked fine. It got a firmware update, rebooted, then was ready for business. It was very easy to add to my Amazon account. So with that, most of the time I won't even use bluetooth to stream music because now I can just ask Alexa to play whatever song or podcast I want. (I do subscribe to Prime Music, so if you don't have that it might not play everything you want.) I found Alexa to be fairly responsive to commands even while playing music. Some of the other non-Amazon devices I've tested don't always have the best microphone arrays so that can be a problem. This speaker may not be quite as good at hearing commands through noise as the Echo devices, but it has worked well enough so far. Another thing to keep in mind is that it's a directional speaker, just like you'd expect from a standard speaker. Some other speakers like the Echo, etc. are round and you can put them in the middle of a room and spread sound equally. This one definitely sounds best from the front, but was still okay from directly behind when I tested it on a counter between our living and dining areas.

Hello there, thank you for your detailed review and great feedback. It is true that the Uxbridge speakers are true wireless units and don't have the 3.5mm aux inputs, but we have noted that you missed it and will share this feedback with the Product Team.

    Smart Speaker with Style

    Posted .

Marshall continues to do it right with their line of speakers. If there is one reason to buy this one over the ton of other speakers out there, it’s the style. The iconic Marshall style looks great sitting on a shelf. The fabric speaker cover and brass buttons scream quality. I absolutely love the build quality on this and like the departure from the modern styled cylinder used by many other companies. The setup of this speaker is incredibly easy. If you’ve set up any other Alexa enabled speaker, you will be right at home here. Download the Marshall app and the step by step instructions get you going. The speaker features all of the typical Alexa music services as well as Bluetooth to play anything you want on your phone. Being. Able to play music via WiFi without being connected to your phone is a serious game changer if you’ve never used it. Alexa has come a long way but, I still think some of the smart features lag behind its competitors. Some of the quirks and phrase memorization makes Alexa feel way less nature than other smart assistants. The sound quality on this speaker is amazing! As with any Marshall speaker the sound is incredible. The bass is booming for a speaker this size and the mids and highs are crystal clear. The adjustable treble and bass make this speaker fine tunable for any room or space. This speaker also features multi room audio so you can play music all throughout your house. Overall this is a great smart speaker if you are looking to add one to your home or start a multi room setup. You can’t go wrong here.
