Good portable FM/AM player with minor gripes

It’s been a while since I’ve used a portable FM/AM radio. Some of the memories I can recall was only a handful of stations would come in clear with the rest suffering from static or hissing noise on the background. Let me start off by saying this if I had this unit back then I would have had a much better experience with portable FM/AM radios. Sound Quality and Signal: Whatever Memorex did it’s doing a heck of a job to pull in radio stations left and right. The majority of the stations come in clear and loud with good stereo separation. It can get loud my max so far has been 10 out of 15 for volume. There still some small few in-between stations that it has troubles with but they’re the same ones I have problems with my on the car radio. Features: In total you get 40 presets split in half between FM and AM stations. You also get a digital clock and alarm. The included headphones are fine and get the job done but I quickly swap them out for a pair that I owned already. As for sound customization, you can only turn on and off the bass boost. I didn’t like how the bass ended up taking over the sound so I prefer to keep it off. Since it’s sweatproof it makes an excellent device to use for your workouts. It is pretty much bare-bones but it’s fine for the price point and does a good job where it matters the most. Cons: My biggest complaint is the display clarity. It’s hard to make what’s on it with the black background. I would of prefer the other way around black numbers with a clear background. The glossy display also doesn’t help either. For the size, I would of like of seen a built-in speaker even if you had to use the headphones as antennae. A much smaller footprint I would of prefer since you don’t get a built-in speaker. Overall if you’re just wanting a simple working portable FM/AM radio station device you can’t go wrong with this one. Sounds very good and loud. It does an amazing job of locking in on stations.

I have been using this armband radio for listening to some of my favorite radio stations while I am working in the yard or around the house. I got tired of listening to streaming music channels and wanted to hear some of my local sports radio and news/weather channels while working. I was very impressed with the reception this radio gets since I am on the very edge of reception from the nearest city. The radio itself isn’t too bulky and is really light. Whether you wear it on your arm or on your belt clip, you won’t notice it after a while. Even though the name of this device is an “Armband Radio” it does include a belt clip as well, which I prefer since I am doing work outside. My arms need full mobility. The radio itself isn’t too bulky and is really light. Whether you wear it on your arm or on your belt clip, you won’t notice it after a while. The buttons are easy to find and I like that they put the volume buttons are on top when clipped to my belt. The tuning buttons are large and easy to find without looking as well I appreciate the design of the headphones in that they don’t tangle easily. They sound pretty good as well. That said, the base boost isn’t all that great. It certainly deepens the sound, but also makes everything sound muffled. I found myself not using it and settling for the tinnier sound for clarity. Another bonus feature it that these are IPX4 rated which means it is resistant to splashes from all sides. This particularly useful when poolside or at the beach. Overall, this is a pretty decent portable radio and feels pretty nostalgic when wearing it. I recommend this if you just want AM/FM radio on the go.

Loses radio reception and volume range too loud

I think the concept of the armband radio is good, but our experience with it really points out some major negatives to us. The radio will tune in a radio station just fine, but once one starts to move around, such as doing yard work, then the static starts as the radio station goes in and out. Obviously, this is quite annoying when you're trying to listen to something. The other drawback to two of our family members is that even the lowest volume setting was too loud for us. I even tried a different set of earbuds with the same result. One member of our family who has some hearing loss felt the volume was just fine. Turning the bass boost on and off had no real affect on the issue of the volume range not offering a low enough setting. The sound quality of the included earbuds is just fine and the armband feature is comfortable to wear. Considering that the regular price is very reasonable I think you have to consider that it provides a certain level of features for this value. The LCD screen does the job, but at times I wished it was easier to read. The radio offers a plentiful amount of preset stations to use, but I found it cumbersome to have to arrow through all the presets, even the unused ones, to get back to the first preset station. If you are someone who goes to the races or sporting events and wants an armband radio to listen in a fairly static position then this Memorex radio is a great value to make this happen. For exercise or tasks with lots of movement I just don't think this is the best choice out there.

Not bad for price but could use fine tuning

The Memorex armband radio is a good basic radio for outdoor use. I have an older radio from another brand that I was looking to upgrade from. The memorex is slightly larger which is fine and fits fine on the arm. My thoughts on the radio are as follows: - The reception of the radio could be better. It seems to pick up stations fine outside but once I went into the house or building it drops stereo on FM stations and gets a background fuzz on AM stations. Not horrible but not great. - The buttons are good and bad in different ways. They click audibly which gets annoying if you hit them a lot. But you can also tell very easily that you have pressed them and I doubt they will be pressed accidentally outside of a bag. - The radio has 20 presets per band but they are all accessed through 1 button which means if you're on 5 and want to go to 4 you're pushing the button 19 times. - The seek feature works pretty well and picked up all the stations I expected it to. - The screen is not nearly as bright as it shows in the pictures. It can be hard to see in different light. - The armband is comfortable enough and stays pretty well while active. - The lock button is easy to engage. - The earphones that come with the unit are not bad but not great but for the price more than I expected honestly. In summary I believe this radio could work fine for most and for the price is a nice option to have. I would recommend this for the right situation but there are little things you should know going in so you're not disappointed.

Leave the expensive phone at home…

This is a great way to leave the expensive phone at home and get out for some fresh air and a little walk around the block without risking your “everything to me” phone and to be honest getting away from the ping and rings and digital distractions for a while. Very simple to find your favorite stations for the pre-sets, and enjoy your 80’s rock or NPR broadcasts. It’s a little bit of an adjustment to go “retro” and hear the commercials and cheesy DJs if you are used to a pure podcast or Sirius “pay to listen” radio channels, but it’s FREE to listen and if the worst happens and you lose this device when out and about or leave it at the playground, you aren’t out the cost of your irreplaceable phone and what the heck stuff happens. Quality of the music is about what you would expect from a radio receiver – AM is AM and will crackle from time to time depending on your station – but absolutely you can tell when a storm is approaching when the lighting CRACKS the signal. FM stations are good with stereo signal and earbuds, and the Memorex will pick up just as well as any other FM radio I have around the house or in the car. The “Bass Boost” is alright and maybe helps out when exercising or doing something in a noisy environment – but for more quiet listening is to me a bit excessive. Others may want the extra thump and it’s there if you want to use it all the time. Battery life is great, and haven’t really had to worry about running out of juice for a couple of weeks so far. You can leave it running and use as an alarm clock if the need arises, so battery life will vary if you leave it on all the time, of course. Would have been nice to have a rechargeable battery built in, but AAA rechargables are not too expensive and if you want to go eco-friendly that is an option. The armband is a little thick and may feel like it is getting in the way if you are doing vigorous exercise like pumping iron, but still better to me than risking an expensive phone that could be damaged or “walk away” when out in the world. Overall this is an inexpensive way to have some music with you and most likely a familiar way to go for the more mature generations as we were around when “The Walkman” and it’s descendants arrived on the market and I bet if you think about it you probably have one of those old “portables” in a box in a closet somewhere from the good old days.

This is a no frills, almost old school armband radio. It's perfect for using on walks or jogging. It is very lightweight. You hardly notice you are wearing it. It fits securely and doesn't feel like it will fall off. Controls are easy to reach and to remember where they are for quick adjustments on the go. Reception is surprising strong. The headphones are certainly not the greatest. The sound is far from top notch. But, they sound good enough for when I'm just out walking the dog. I will say that they are surprisingly comfortable for an inexpensive set of headphones. All in all this is a nice little radio for simple outdoor activities.

Other than a few batteries (AAA) which are included and being within a few hundred miles of civilization, you won’t find yourself needing much else to get your favorite radio or local news with ease on the go with this device. No Wifi signal or premium recurring subscriptions required. Due to it being an extraordinarily simple radio to use, it would certainly be best suited for older generations – you know, the ones still using flip phones – and refer to “wifi” as the internet. I would expect most will find it most practical to use at the beach, or maybe a pool – somewhere where you’d may want to leave that $1000 cell phone behind. The size is somewhat bulky in all honesty for what the device is; but it can be secured well to your arm with the included adjustable strap. Also includes a handy digital clock to keep track of time/walks/etc. The included earbuds are surprisingly comfortable actually; with a convenient soft tab which holds them in place. I was less impressed by the actual audio quality of the headphones; but I was able to plug a higher quality set in with ease and the sound was great. I let my wife try, and she didn’t mind them in the least. I did notice that while tuned in to a local station in pretty close proximity (15 miles in a beachy area) that while walking, you’d get some static, or dropping out. Stuff we are not used to anymore with streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, etc – but times have changed. Not too bad, but worth mentioning and the FM receiver may not be very powerful. Overall, it’s a simple product, likely marketed at simpletons, and it does the job. A nice value for the price point.
