This is definitely the best metal gear solid since the first one. Graphicly the game is amazing and the game play mechanics are smooth and fluent. As with any metal gear solid be ready for some strange story lines and LONG cutscenes. If you are the type of person that doesn't like to skip cutscenes, then prepare yourself for a solid hour before you really get to play the game. It is worth the wait though, so be patient. MGS5 is one of the better games out at this time and really shows off what your next gen console is capable of. What are you doing still reading reviews?! Go buy it already!

I have only ever played MGS Guns of the Patriots and this one, but I am whole heartedly enjoying this game. I do not feel that you need prior knowledge of MGS to play this game. The side ops can seem like busy work, and building your base requires some grinding, but the action in the main story is keeping me engaged. The ability to customize a lot of stuff is fun, and there and countless hours of fun to be had. I'm sure I am over 50-60 hours in and have completed about two thirds of the story. Of course you can blaze through the story in less time, but where the fun in that?

Only 3% completion and already know this will be a classic. Great controls, visuals, and story. Hopefully this will be a fitting end to the mgs saga.

I absolutely love this game! This is easily the best one of the series. I think my favorite part is that it is a huge sandbox and you are able to go and do what you want, when you want. Very open world. The earlier MGS's were so constricting and would not let your roam. IGN gave it a 10 out of 10 and I would have to agree. Whole-heartedly! Lots of cool, new features keeps it fresh. It is more geared towards stealth and espionage… but they also allow you to run in guns a blazing, if that's what you prefer too! All in all, a very very solid game!

Game of the Year so far

In a year of really great games like Witcher 3 and Batman: Arkham Knight, this one has been my favorite so far. I left the "so far" in there because at the time of this review Fallout 4 hasn't come out yet. The thing I love most about this game is it's approach to the open world game. Most open world games have a really rigid mission structure where you have are shown exactly where to stand, hit this button/lever, go other there and open the door, talk to the guy, kill the other guy, mission over. Don't get me wrong, there are elements of that in this game too. 95% of the time though the mission objective looks like this: Find prisoner, Rescue prisoner. That's it. You aren't told exactly where the prisoner is but you do have a general idea where they are. You get to choose your load out. You get to choose your approach: loud or silent. (Read: hailstorm of bullets or no one knew you were there.) You get to choose how you'll get to the mission objective: by horse or on foot. I guess what I'm trying to say is, this game lets you play it how you want to play it. It (eventually) provides you with all the tools you need to succeed. The really fun and interesting thing about this game is that the enemy will adapt to you. Example, score too many head shots and expect the enemy to start wearing helmets. The enemy will start wearing body armor and gas masks too. At the beginning of the game the AI can be a bit intimidating. I'd encourage anyone to experiment with your weapons and tools. You might be surprised at all the different things you can do. Try completing missions or side ops only using the empty magazine. I'm about 40 hours into the game and am still enjoying myself. If you were intimidated because most Metal Gear games are confusing with tons of weird stuff going on nonstop, you can put those fears aside. The first hour of the game is pure Kojima weirdness, but after that, the weird stuff takes a backseat for a compelling espionage action game.
My only complaint with the game is it's save feature. Whenever you quit you can never quite tell where you'll be (progress wise) when you start back up. This is most annoying when you finally get to Mother Base.
Other than that, the game is extremely fun and an awesome closer on Kojima's Metal Gear series.

A very deep, and detailed Metal Gear game. This will put your sneaking skills to the test. This game is not going to be for everyone, especially those that like action heavy games. If you are a fan of Metal Gear, steal games, open world games, or games that will put your tactical thinking to the test, don't hesitate to get this game. I have been playing for hours and I am barely scratching the surface of everything that is there. The graphics, the sound, the controls, and immersive environment is all top notch.

This game is much more of what a metal gear should be. Where the enemy doesn't just "know" where you are because something happened. They have to search for you and find you. Also, this game has A LOT of components to keep you busy... including missions, capture things/people, research stuff, etc. Plus most missions are required to be replayed at least once to get a good score and complete all objectives.

Very well done. Gameplay, story, characters, graphics. Everything about this game is better than I anticipated. I've played every metal gear game since the old 8-bit games. They've all been fun and enjoyable with an increasing emphasis on stealth. This one is exceptional. I love the ability to sneak through everything or completely destroy everything. By far the best, most versatile entry in the franchise so far. Any action game fan should pick this up without a second thought. You won't be disappointed!

To put it simply, Metal Gear Solid V does some incredible things with it's gameplay. The AI is some of the best in gaming, the guns feel responsive and fun, and both the stealth and action mechanics provide ludicrous amounts of entertainment. There is so much replay value in this game without even factoring in online FOBs (which suffer from server issues, unfortunately) and the upcoming Metal Gear Online.
However, for long time Metal Gear fans, this game may be a bit disappointing. There are some unfinished storylines and cut content from this game. The plot is mostly familiar, and at times it feels cheapened by bad writing or questionable progressions. There is still some enjoyment to be had in its storylines, but the main focus, where the game truly excels, is the gameplay.
Outside of the most important factors of the game (gameplay and story) the game continues to excel.
MGSV offers some of the best graphics with one of the most beautiful gaming environments seen today. Afghanistan truly feels alive. The detail of the surrounding mountains, the dunes, the damaged, ruined structures. It all feels alive. A later play area is shown the same attention, and while it is entirely different in climate and look, the same love was shown to it.
Sound is handled well in every category. The voice acting is top notch for almost every character, with the exception of a few poorly delivered lines, some of which can be blamed on bad writing. The sound of gun fire, vehicles, and general atmosphere is among the best in the industry. It isn't quite on par with the echo or gunfire effects of Battlefield, but it remains quite good, and with a superb soundtrack to back it all up, it truly is a pleasure to listen to.
Gameplay - 10/10
Story - 7/10
Replay Value - 10/10
Graphics - 10/10
Sound - 9.5/10
Overall - 9.5/10
I recommend this game to *anybody*. Metal Gear fan or not. Rewarding stealth and action gameplay is enough to warrant this game as a must purchase.

This game is AMAZING. That's all I can say. I've been playing this game since Playstation 1 and this thing has me hooked. If you looking for a great game with good action and good storytelling than this is it for you. Also the open world you have now and numerous missions you can just run around and get to are great. And if you in the mood for some target practice after you mission is done feel free to roam and hunt some wolves or sheep.
Go now, buy it, stop reading and play it.

If you're a hardcore MGS fan, or someone who's just getting into the MGS scene, this game will surely knock your socks off.
The graphics are incredible and the gameplay is fluid & entertaining. The gameplay isn't restrictive and the narrative is engaging. All the accents of a MGS game along with the added benefit of true open-world exploration. You build the story, you make the decisions rather than being channeled through a set plot/narrative.
Overall, HIGHLY recommend!

A great sendoff to the MGS series. Although gameplay is completely different, it still has the familiar Hideo Kojima tropes like hiding in cardboard boxes. This game feels HUGE. Completely open world, plenty of enemy bases to infiltrate and you can even call in a helicopter to fly back to your base in the middle of the ocean. This game is not only for MGS fans but all gamers alike. One of the best games I've played this year and probably will be playing into next year.

MGSV The Phantom Pain is the latest in the franchise and is the first in free roaming style of gameplay. If you have never played a metal gear game then the story will be a little overwhelming but the cassettes you find in game fill you in decently well. Even if you don't know the story, the amount of missions in game are expansive and will keep anyone occupied for awhile. Due to the graphic content and mature story, I would highly recommend it for any mature gamer.

As Kojima's last Metal Gear Solid project he will ever work on let me just say this man did & went above & beyond expectations. Where do I start: the cornicopia of visual feasts for the senses, the voice acting, the story? While not as story driven as MGS4 (my personal favorite) it has been a joy to play & DD the wolf dog is worth the price of the game itself! Konami will be poorer for him leaving, (whatever his reasons I guarantee they are the ones at fault.)

Being a long time MGS fan, this was a no brainer. I love the easy access sandbox style mission list, as well the open range field of play, such huge areas!! Very deep weapon/item development feature, and the story line is good, almost convoluted at times, but it reveals a lot about the past and "future" in the world of Snake.
Havent spent a ton of time in the online arena, but I liked what I did experience up to a paltry level 10 hah. 2 thumbs up Hideo!!

In one of the side missions (side-op), the goal is to eliminate the enemy General. The only person who has information on his location is his trusted Soviet Captain. Naturally, I was supposed to tail the Capitan to find out the general’s hiding place. However, during the mission, I accidentally killed the Capitan when I was actually aiming for his body guards (/facepalm). In any other game, that would be “game over”. Time to restart at the check point. Not in this game!
Since my only lead is gone, I decided to search the military outposts one by one to try to identify the General. After thoroughly searching 2 outposts with no luck. I got a radio call saying radar detected several Jeeps mobilizing in one of the nearby outpost and they were heading to the extraction point. I thought this must be the General trying to make his escape! So I got on my trusted horse (yes, you get to ride a gorgeous horse in this game), checked the map for short cut, figured I could intercept the Jeeps near the extraction point and start riding furiously.
As I got closer to the extraction point. The Jeep was reaching escaping velocity and about to disappear from the playable map. I galloped down the cliff, rolled off my horse, pulled out the rifle, aimed at that general’s head and pulled the trigger as the Jeep was about to cross the boundary of the map. Not surprisingly, I missed my mark. However, by sheer luck, the bullet found its way into the driver’s head. The Jeep span and stopped just at the edge of the map with the confused and panicked General yelling in his seat. I then proceed to swap out my sniper rifle and shot him between the eyes.
Turned around, got on the horse and rode into the sunset.
Mission accomplished

The Phantom Pain is the fifth Metal Gear Solid game and the real sequel to what was essentially the prologue, Ground Zeroes. If you have played Ground Zeroes, the gameplay is very similar though enhanced thanks to a larger environment (two large sandbox maps), Mother base meta game, and more variety of weapons and tools to use.
There's a lot to like about the game.
*The game's graphics are great though the character models aren't quite as good as other games. Nevertheless, the sacrifice there means you'll at least get 60 fps most of the time. There's also some nice attention to details like the characters actually pulling the trigger of the guns when they fire them.
*Gameplay is done really well with intuitive controls; the best part about the gameplay is the number ways you can approach missions and side ops. Managing your staff and mother base resources can be rather fun especially as you try to recruit new staff members to develop more equipment.
*Length, there are 157 side ops and 50 main missions. If you only do the story missions and nothing else, most likely you'll finish it in 30 hours.
So what's wrong with the game?
*Although there are fifty or so story missions, a lot of the latter missions are repeats of earlier missions just on a higher difficulty.
*Venom Snake(Kefier Sutherland) also barely talks in the game, which will feel odd when characters seem to be talking to him, but he doesn't respond.
*A lot of the side ops can become repetitive because of a lack of mission variety.
*Boss fights are few and not conceptualized as well as past games.
*Story isn't very good especially once you reach chapter 2 where everything feels rushed.
