Definitely one of the more difficult Metroid games, but the rock-solid gameplay, the inventive bosses, a forgiving retry system when you die, and actual heart-pounding chase sequences all add up to a wonderful experience. Samus near the midgame is as agile as she is in Smash. This game reminds me of that joy playing Metroid Fusion on the GBA. The story gets insane at the end and I love it. Normal difficulty I beat in about 7 hours with about 50 deaths. Second run through was 4 hours and 2 deaths. It is purely skill based, 10/10, worth every penny.

A great return to the series but not without flaws imho. Samus is noticeably faster to manuever, which is a bit of a double edged sword to me. She has no slow walking movement and only basically has one speed, which is running. When trying to get somewhere this is great. When trying to be precise, like when fighting, it can be to your detriment though. The EMMI gimmick is honestly more annoying than scary. The game tries to encourage playing a certain way, but its actually better to ignore their advice. Using stealth more often than not is unreliable, and the best strat is to let the EMMI get behind you, then simply footrace it to the exit. Also the game misleads you into thinking to try timing the counter right when you see the light in the EMMI's eye. It's actually too hard to do that on reaction, and a better idea is to press the button right before you think it will appear. Bosses can be difficult but usually 2-3 tries and you'll get the pattern down. It's just they do so much damage its tough to learn it on the fly 1st try. The music is also some of the weaker tracks I've heard in the series. Out of all the areas, I only remember the jungle as the best. And even that one was so so. Still, I couldn't put it down while playing it. It was great to get into a 2d Metroid since Fusion. I just couldn't help but compare it to the stronger entries in the series.

Doesn’t overstay it’s welcome, an excellent adventure. Was able to 100% in around 12 hours and finished feeling complete. The twists and turns the story takes are great, in addition to the quick clip that upgrades are doled out. You always leave feeling like you accomplished something. Great polished environments and crisp animations make this easily the better of the 2D metroids, even harking back to Fusion. Worthy successor and worth full price.

One of the tightest controlling games ever played

I am not a typical fan of this series, the first Metroid I ever played was Prime back on the gamecube so I wasnt jumping to buy this when it came out. I recently bought an 8bitdo controller for my switch and saw this on sale so I decided it would be a good title to test out this controller on. I can say with all honesty that this game has some of the tightest controlls of any game I've played going all the way to the NES for me. The developers nailed it, Samus controls and reacts instantaneously which is crucial for these types of games. The different button combos make it so that tight controls are a must and when you pull off a maneuver, it feels very satisfying. My only complaints so far are that yhr graphics dont look great ok a 55inch 4k TV, all the rough edges show through. Also (like any Metroid Vania) it can be easy to become stuck. Whats more frustrating is that there will be no obvious sign for progressing. On one occasion I became stuck only to find out I needed to blast an innocuous wall to move forward. Overall though, a very near perfect game

Imagine the older games from NES and SNES but with the controls perfected and higher frame rate. If your not a fan of Metroid or Castlevania style games you won't like this, obviously. However, if you grew up playing them this will bring you right back. A word of caution, dont go back to playing the originals on the switch retro consoles after playing this. They feel terrible lol. This game is worth every penny for the switch.

I enjoyed every second of this game and completed it to 100%. That's not something I typically do. The difficulty is just right - the game makes it easy to keep learning and improving, without punishing you by sending you back to the beginning of the stage. Figuring out how to solve puzzles with abilities was a unique challenge in itself and one that felt fun, not tedious or annoying. This was a great combination of old school challenge and gorgeous 60fps modern visuals.

Bought this game when it first came out several years ago. Never got a chance to play it. I am starting to get into this game and it is AWESOME. Nintendo does it again. If you enjoy Metroid… get it.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's better than Super Metroid which is one of my all time favorite games, but it's the second best sqotch game ive ever played for sure after BOTW. The boss fights are challenging and intuitive, normal difficulty is enough for a challenge and atmosphere is classic. Won't regret buying this

This game shines as an example of what Nintendo does best - they don't pack the best graphics or AAA type of production value, but this is a great looking, great playing game that just clicks. Really shows off well on an OLED, and this will offer a very fun play through for gamers new to the Metroid franchise.

I was expecting good things from Metroid Dread. I didn't really know what to expect from this game though, since Nintendo haven't exactly treated Metroid with respect and integrity in recent years. (Looking at you Federation Force...) However, I am delighted to say that this game absolutely exceeds ALL expectations. I've not beaten the game yet, but I'm willing to say this may be the single most perfect Metroid game Nintendo has ever given us. This game, unlike so many others in the last few years, gets a 10/10 from me, and this is high praise, as I am a very harsh critic. The reason I'm able to give M:D such a high score is because it doesn't hold back in the slightest. If it's going to punch you, it's going to give you everything it has. Bosses are beautifully crafted and not one single boss has been too easy or lame. Every single one has challenged me, killed me, and forced me to think outside the box to beat them. Each death adds to your skill in ways most other games don't even touch on, even Samus Returns.

    A Modern Classic

Following up on the remake of the second Metroid, “Samus Returns,” Spanish studio MercurySteam and Nintendo return to evolve Mercury Steam’s take on classic side scrolling Metroid further. Samus is faster than she’s ever been, and with a load of new techniques and abilities to help her through one of her toughest and most dangerous missions yet as she tries to discover the mystery behind the reappearance of the X Parasite, a threat to all which she believed to have been wiped from the galaxy. Carried forward from Samus Returns is the new parrying system, which allows Samus to respond to enemy attacks with a melee smash that sets them up for a one hit kill, making battles with common enemies more gripping than ever. And new puzzles will let players test their wits for rewarding experiences, including plenty of Shinespark puzzles that will test both your logic skills and platforming timing.
